Scout Notes – Pre Season

Huddersfield Town new boys Steve Mounie and Tom Ince score for the Terriers to boost their CVs for the role of budget options in our Fantasy squads.

Here’s the latest pre-season notes.

Bury 1 Huddersfield Town 3

Club record signing Steve Mounie opened his account for Huddersfield Town as the Premier League new boys came from behind to win their second pre-season encounter.

The Benin international, signed from French side Montpellier, was handed a tap-in by Chris Lowe’s fine cross before goals from fellow new signing Tom Ince and last season’s top scorer Elias Kachunga sealed the deal for the Terriers.

Ince’s strike was his second consecutive goal in pre-season as the midfielder, priced at 6.0 and owned by 2.5% of Fantasy Premier League managers, enjoyed another rise in stock.

Midfielder Kachunga – scorer of 12 goals in the Championship campaign – remains on the radar after his converted spot-kick.

His 6.0 price tag in midfield could prove tempting in light of Huddersfield’s kind opening run (pal, NEW, SOT, wham, LEI, bur). However, he is unlikely to take penalty duties from Australian Aaron Mooy, who missed out on Sunday with his pre-season break extended following participation in the Confederations Cup.

Terriers coach David Wagner employed his standard 4-2-3-1 formation, but the absence of no fewer than nine first-team regulars rather diluted the relevance of the encounter.

Tommy Smith (foot), Jon Gorenc Stankovic (ACL) and Michael Hefele (Achilles) were joined on the sidelines by goalkeeper Joel Coleman (knock), Joe Lolley (groin) and Nahki Wells (ankle).

Mark Hudson, who was on a coaching course, and new signing Mathias Jorgensen, who was attending his sister’s wedding, were also unavailable.

Collin Quaner recovered from a knock to make a second-half appearance and set up Ince’s goal, while left-back Scott Malone drew the foul that led to Kachunga’s penalty conversion.

Huddersfield Town XI to 60 minutes: Lossl; Lowe, Schindler, Cranie, Scannell; Billing, D Williams; Bunn, Palmer, van La Parra; Mounie.

Huddersfield Town XI after 60 minutes: Schofield; Malone, Schindler (Edmonds-Green 75), Cranie (Kane 75), J Williams; Whitehead, Payne (Hogg 75); Ince, Kachunga, Quaner; Depoitre.
Sub Not Used: O’Brien.

A reminder that all the friendly results and key Scout Notes are being captured here, in our Pre-Season Guide.

My only real debate on my team is which Citeh asset to go with. For me it has to be a big gun and I'll find money for this .Just which one
KDB nailed and should tick up the points, but I owned at points last year and he can go periods without troubling the FPL scorers and I don't think I'd captain
    Aguero is aguero
Or the new kid Jesus ...pens ?

Wrong question! Say you're deciding between KDB and Mane, and you think Mane will get more points. Do you pick KDB because you have no other City assests?

Luckily for you, you probably think KDB will score more anyway, so this example is bad, but you get the idea. People think it's crazy or maverick to fail to cover specific teams, when it's only really a coincidence that the players they picked aren't from that team, because another combination was marginally better.

Whilst the general point is true, a comparison between mods and forwards is more than valid ie. A straight up Jesus v KDB (as you can replace either with a 4.5)

This is affecting my entire squad.

I really don't want to leave out Lukaku with those tasty United fixtures and I certainly don't want to go without Kane.

On that basis it needs to be KDB and probably Sané.

    RMT out of 10

    Foster / Myhill
    Lindelof / Bertrand / Cedric / Yedlin / Long
    Alli / Eriksen / Ramsey / Zaha / RLC
    Aguero / Lukaku / Gayle

Not sure about Long and Yedlin.

Ramsey isn't a lock in the team and Spurs mid double up is troubling.

            Long could be any 4.0.
What 4.5 def would you rather have?
Ramsey seems nailed atm, if that changes then I'll likely move to Willian.
Spurs double up troubling? Plenty going with a mid + Kane, see no reason that a midfield double is less appealing.

    General thoughts on the below?

    Foster
    Lindelof, Tripper, Cedric,
    Eriksen, KDB, Willian, JWP
    Lukaku, Kane, Deeney

    Myhill, Mee, Rosenior, RLC

    1) Eriksen vs other £9.5s (Ali, Salah, Mane etc.)?
    2) JWP vs Mooy?

Good team. I really like your structure in principle, though I would consider starting with Defoe or Benteke instead of Deeney, and waiting and seeing with the 6.5s (don't trust any of them yet). Perhaps downgrade Linde or Trippier etc.

      1) Eriksen is a great pick
      2) JWP. Fraser is another

I have Benteke instead of 6.5 FWD but still not convinced. That means two 4.0 DEFs and RLC as 4th MID. My plan is to WC early so I will have a chance to sort my team out. Austin nailed would be very helpful in this case.

          Fwiw I've gone:

          Foster Myhill
          Lindelöf Cedric Tomkins Mee Francis
          Alli Coutinho Zaha JWP Carroll
          Kane Lukaku Defoe

No 4.0 defenders, and a 5.5 4th mid. The hope is one of the 5.5s will start well, and I'll jump on whoever that is 😆

KDB in midfield is essential for me. Trippier at 5.5 is great value. I know I should sacrifice one but can't decide at the moment. Hopefully closer to GW1 deadline I will find solution.

Been noticing a lot of RLC in sides last few days, so I've spoken to a few Palace fans about him and the consensus seems to be Milli-Cab as the midfielders and Puncheon in the no.10 role from the off.

I'm a bit worried about RLC consequently, especially seeing a few are looking at playing him (I've considered it too) in a Capoue-esque 4.5er role.

If he doesn't play, he will see a lot of sales (bearing in mind how volatile the market can be in the early days), which will only snowball and could lead to an early price drop threatening... puts you in a bad place GW1, with maybe having to sell your 4.5 to protect TV!

More I think about it the less enthused I am - def one to keep an eye on preseason but maybe don't trust that he'll start in the way that Capoue was almost certain to!

          Zaha Benteke Townsend
          Mili RLC/Puncheon Cabaye

IMO, for 4.5 RLC looks a good option.

I'd take that with a pinch of salt. Those are all popular players with the fans and a new loanee from a big club they've probably barely seen won't register as a threat in their eyes.

It's of course very possible he won't play, but pre-season should give us a very clear indication seeing as it's a new team for the manager

Yeah hope so, LMB! I am just a bit worried about the volatility of the market after GW1 - if RLC doesn't play and a lot think we would have, he might see a lot of sales which could force early FTs burned / maybe even hits to protect TV. So just wondering do I want to take that risk with him!

McArthur, Romeu, Yacob, Loftus-Cheek, Carrick, Carroll or Barry?

Do they? From an attacking standpoint, think back to their performances last season in "tougher games". Has that been forgotten already?

In my eyes, they'll be the quickest, fittest team out of the blocks and probably start the season all guns blazing.

The Mane factor is much less of an issue as Salah is that direct pacey attacker they need in his absence

We're in a minority but it seems more popular than in previous years. My argument is that under 7m there is no real value in midfield and under 8m nothing in attack. Therefore, defenders priced up to 6.5 offer better value than cheaper forwards and midfielders.

Add to that the potential of wing-backs this year and 5 in defence looks viable.

Don't forget, a 6.5 defender is the equivalent of a 7.0 mid as the base price is 4.0 and 4.5 respectively

I think I may start with at least 4 at the back for the first time in gw1. My own view is there is so much value in defence especially with more attacking fullbacks in recent season plus more bias in their bonus point potential. I also see view cheap strikers and mids. I will change back to three when someone like gayle, Abraham or knockeart comes on the scene

I cant seem to find value in midfield and defenders seem less at risk of rotation.

Might be a silly question but when a player takes a corner if he crosses and a player heads a chance over is that counted in stats a a chance created or successful corner or both?

I believe that it is both a successful corner, and a chance, or even big chance, created. 🙂

If United sign a DM then Pogba will be more influential and also Ramsey in the 3-4-3 formation is great option as he can push forward instead of have to hold back

Ramsey looked good at the end of last season in a 3 a the back formation. Good price if he can score like he did a few years ago.

Not sure on pogba, good price and could potentially be played in a more advanced role and has a year in the league under hid belt.

Currently have Ramsey but Lukaku is another United attack for me right now

Why dose know one seem to fancy mata at 7m?

Before his injury last season he scored or assisted in 8 out of 12 starts. And started the Europa league final.

Compared to other 7m mids Willian, Lanzini, Ramsey, and Zaha he was second best for chances created per minute, and best for minutes per shots on target.

Also has good fixtures, so for that price I'm tempted

    Foster (Elliot)

Had a look at Rudiger when he was signed - one to watch but not sure about the certainty of starts, we just don't know if he's going to be there as a Zouma/Terry-esque backup to be rotated in/our when fixtures are pressed or whether he's the new starter. Watch closely in pre season.
Big nb. - does not threaten going forward.

I had Rangel as my throwaway 4.0 but saw this Cranie guy started for Hud. I want Francis cuz of fix's but not sure how nailed. Jesus could be a bargain if Aguero moves. Good Luck

        Actually, I'd advocate the 8.5gk thing! Y

ou save 0.5, have the backup keeper there in case the #1 is injured, plus keepers have the lowest ceiling of all players, so I want to minimise spend as much as possible.

We also saw with those owning Foster/Heaton last season that a lot of the time the decisions were wrong, as the away keeper (normally Heaton) would outscore the home one (Foster) given the save points on offer (especially if the home GK lost the clean sheet); at 4.5 quality, you can be confident but not too confident that the home keeper will keep a cleanie, so I feel like the rotation idea is a bit of a red herring.

Bertie and Tadic in at the moment, but I'm really not sure quite yet. Prefer Bertie to Ced (Ced flatters to deceive; points per game for Bertie higher last year); Tadic in as I think he's the bargain on paper plus I think he gives you the best value at 6.5 v punts at 6.0

Siggy's move: keen to have views on how this affects Swansea options!
My view is 1) Swansea are definitely offs-on for relegation; 2) Llorente will get poor service but will definitely be the main man upfront and may take spot kick duties (overall negative); 3) Carroll may step up on assists and set pieces, even play more upfront (?) - overall that could be positive for Carroll and make him an intriguing option at 4.5
