Scout Report – Tiemoue Bakayoko

Chelsea continued their summer spending spree on Saturday afternoon with the acquisition of midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco.

The 22-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge for a reported fee of £40m and, having penned a five-year contract, becomes Antonio Conte’s third capture of the transfer window following the signing of versatile defender Antonio Rudiger and back-up keeper Willy Caballero.

After months of speculation linking him with a move to the Blues, Bakayoko explained what he’ll bring to his new side as he looks to strike up a partnership with N’Golo Kante in the centre of the park:

“I think I am an intelligent player who offers physicality and can also dribble and get by people…N’Golo Kante was the best player in the Premier League last season in the middle of the pitch and that is not easy. To play alongside him would be something very good for me and it can help me progress. I’ve played a match with him for the French national team so we know each other very well and I hope we can do beautiful things together this year. “

The History

Rejected by France’s famed Clairefontaine academy as a youngster, Bakayoko joined up with Rennes at the age of 13 after spending eight months on the sidelines with a broken leg.

Beginning his career with the club’s reserves in 2012/13, the midfielder was then handed his senior debut the following season. Despite bagging just one goal in 24 Ligue 1 outings, his combative displays caught the eye of Monaco, who splashed the cash in August 2014.

The first two years in his new surrounds were a bitter disappointment, though. Subbed off just over half an hour into his debut, Bakayoko was then hampered by a thigh problem and played 31 league matches, over that period, scoring once.

The appointment of Claude Makelele to the club’s coaching staff helped address Bakayoko’s alleged attitude problems and turned his career around.

Nailing down a regular role last season, he scored two goals and an assist in 32 league outings as Monaco powered their way to the French title and a place in the Champions League semi-finals.

After turning out a total of 27 times at every youth level from Under 16 to Under 21, Bakayoko was handed his one and only senior appearance for France back in March this year.

The Prospects

Having scored four times in his career to date, it’s fair to say that Bakayoko hasn’t been earmarked for his contribution in the final third.

Standing six foot one, the Frenchman offers Conte a physically imposing and dynamic presence in the centre of the park to sit alongside N’Golo Kante or Cesc Fabregas, as Nemanja Matic edges closer to the exit door.

Delving into the defensive numbers from his final year in Ligue 1, Bakayoko averaged an interception every 39.6 minutes – almost on a par with Kante (38.3 minutes) and far superior to Matic (53.9) and the defensively-suspect Fabregas (82.9) in 2016/17.

It’s a similar story when it comes to minutes per successful tackle, with Bakayoko (31.7) far closer to Kante (24.9) than Matic (52.9) or Fabregas (44.8).

In the air, in particular, the new arrival is a definite upgrade on Conte’s current crop – he won 64 of 97 attempted headers in 2016/17. Put into perspective, Kante won just 31.7% and Fabregas 39.1%, with Matic (59.4%) also lagging behind.

Bakayoko also boasts an ability to drive forward from deep and take the match to opponents. His 57 successful dribbles last term was bettered only by Eden Hazard among the Chelsea contingent and some way ahead of Kante (36), Matic (29) and Fabregas (12).

Yet totals of 28 shots (one every 79.2 minutes) and 14 key passes (one every 158.5 minutes) for a Monaco side that scored 107 times last term highlight a lack of attacking potential. As a result, he’s likely to come in around £5.0 in Fantasy Premier League – the same as Kante and Matic.

Essentially, then, the numbers indicate that, while Bakayoko is unlikely to turn many heads in FPL, his arrival – just like Kante last year – should boost the Blues’ defensive prospects.

Although Chelsea ultimately chalked up 16 clean sheets in 2016/17, only three of those arrived in the final 16 Gameweeks with their resilience diminishing as the season unfolded.

With Bakayoko on board, this could mean that the likes of Marcos Alonso, Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta could all remain viable Fantasy targets, in spite of their lofty price tags.

However, it’s uncertain just how much Champions League duties will affect Conte’s teamsheets, with the Blues’ rarely affected by rotation last term as a result of their lack of European matches.

Having undergone minor knee surgery at the end of last season, though, Bakayoko could be out of action until September, according to reports.

Furthermore, clashes against Spurs and Everton in the first three Gameweeks may prove an early-season deterrent for those eyeing up Chelsea’s defensive regulars, allowing us to scour elsewhere for budget value picks until a clearer picture emerges of Conte’s intentions and Bakayoko’s impact.

Forster to Foster & Ake to Cedric then upgrade Cranie to a 4.5, Holgate's got tough fixtures, too.

Holgate was just going to stay on the bench, any nailed 4 million defenders yet?

Ramsey has been in and out of my team like a yo yo, looks like he could be a great 7 million option

      I currently have:
      1 Arsenal (Ozil)
      1 Chelsea (Willian)
      2 Liverpool (Coutinho, Milner)
      1 Man City (Aguero)
      2 Man United (Lukaku, Lindelof)
      1 Tottenham (Trippier)

Don't think I'll have the balls to go into GW1 without a Spurs attacker but that's how it is at the moment

Worse ideas but their ownership is high. Your banking on the Wembley affect being a big thing, for goals it hasn't been too much of an issue for them BUT it's better to have goals in a winning team.

Arsenal & Liverpool. Lacazette is tempting but got a feeling him and Giroud might share some points. Liverpool look like a rotation nightmare atm with CL qualifiers coming up but Coutinho IMO is always a great shout.

Probably start with something similar to this.

    Foster - Myhill

    Walker - Cedric - Trippier - Dawson - Naughton

    Zaha - Pedro - Ritchie - Carroll - Alli

    Lukaku - Jesus - DeFoe

Tempted to drop Defoe for Ayew and get Sane in for Ritchie but depends on city and preseason.

      Like the Betrtand pick.

I'd have to give it a solid 7 or a low 8. Your bench is weak, I'd look at Pedro or Zaha to a cheaper option then upgrading Lascelles/Myhill.

Depends on how you like your team balance really.

      1. willl
        • 8 Years

Foster / Myhill will just be left until I wildcard most likely, guaranteed that one of them will play.
Think I would like as little money on the bench as possible without leaving myself short, and RLC and Lascelles should be enough cover for injuries/random benchings until I wildcard which will most likely be before GW10.

Currently considering a front 7 as follows:

    Lallana | Willian | Mata | Ramsey
    Kane | Lukaku | Jesus

    Defence will be 2 x 5m and 1 x 5.5m plus a few also-rans

What do we think of the midfield 4? Willian and Ramsey seem well backed in here but I'm thinking that Lallana and Mata could fly with their fixtures. I guess the problem will be whether they are all nailed on!

    Thoughts?

Anyone up to having an in depth analysis about Harry Kane? One of the most popular choices at the moment, but:
    1. Tends to start the season slowly
    2. Spurs changed stadium now. It will likely affect both the team, and player.

I am not so sure it'd be safe to start with him.

You could make similar arguments about any of the premium attackers. I'm getting him in early and leaving him there for the season, even if he blanks for a couple games. Lesson learnt from last season.

If his name was Thierry Henry you wouldn't even consider not having him.

      1. He started the season slowly because of injuries and international tournaments - neither of which apply this time around
      2. Spurs don't have a problem scoring goals at Wembley, they have a problem not conceding goals.

If he gets a brace at Newcastle which is very possible he'll be 12.8 by GW2 then another goal against Chelsea in GW2 because he loves scoring in NLDs and he'll be 13m by GW3 facing Burnley at home.

Tbh I'd rather have him from the start!

Huddersfield are the first team ever promoted to the PL with a negative goal difference. Something to think about.

solid, not sure on Gayle but can see why you picked him. Would swap Yedlin with Francis/Mee/Suttner and Simpson with another 4.5 too

Not sure if Simpson will be ahead of Chilwell - if not you'll be stuck with Yedlin every week.

Honestly think you're overpaying for Sane & Zaha, not sure they're worth the value. Might be worth early season going for Willian over one of them? Sane in particular as we don't know what their attack will look like.

Otherwise a good team overall with good balance, I have my opinions on Cout/Alli/Lacazette hence why I haven't chose them but really comes down to you can't have them all...

I'd also opt for Willian instead of Zaha.

I'd keep Sane though - City are the title favourites and will score alot of goals. I expect that Sane will start most games - Downgrading him for an emerging 8 (Pogba for example) leaves a certain flexibility too.

Pre-season will give more clues no doubt.

Good points on Sane regarding the downgrading. I think my team lacks an option around 9.0m in midfield (Only got KDB) so I'm left vulnerable IF I need that emerging 8m or even a Liverpool mid.

Really am concerned about minutes for Sane, though.

I went for Zaha because of ownership and he is a good player, with decent fixtures (not the best)

Sane is Pep's favorite so I think he'll be in the attack somewhere... I could go for Willian/Pedro/Ramsey as a back up

Fair arguments, I have Benteke in for the first three fixtures as a punt (Might not end up in my team come GW1), the first 3 including Liverpool for Tekkers are good.

Thing with Sane though is that he's actually not that prolific in FPL? For that price? The options are scarce. If you like Sane keep him in anyways!

I understand the concern - I've switched between KDB and Sane in various drafts, and Jesus. I think City will be fantastic this season so I want coverage, but accommodating Lukaku and Kane makes it hard. I'm on an attack of Sane, Willian, Coutinho, Alli, Jesus and Lukaku at present.

It's hard to know how City will line up. I'm expecting Sterling to be peripheral and something like
            Sane Aguero/Jesus Jesus/Bernardo
            KDB Silva/Bernardo
            Fernandinho/Gundogan

Obviously Sane is at risk because of Sterling and potentially Jesus on the left (Although I doubt that will happen much). KDB will start more no doubt, but maybe it won't be that many more. If there is only 30 points between KDB and Sane by the end of the season, then i think that 1.5 was maybe better spent elsewhere.

I'm struggling though - I wish there was a little bit more at that 8-8.5 range.

It's worth pointing out, of course, that Bernardo could well be the one that emerges. I wouldn't be surprised if interest in him increases over pre-season. He can occupy both a deeper position and play on the right, and perhaps his versatility will improve his number of starts.

Agreed, city coverage is important for me too. KDB looks most nailed and I've got him early on literally for that reason alone, once it's clear I'll be looking at other options even if he's doing ok.

I think your extra point here on Bernando really sums it up, we don't know what their lineup will be so for FPL they're tough to pick.

Why are you anti Laca Alli and Coutinho?

        1. greghammer95
          • 14 Years
          6 years, 9 months ago

I'm not anti them, more I've chosen other options as I prefer them BUT they're not terrible picks by any means...

          Laca ---
I want Kane & Lukaku, for me they're going to be red hot, having Laca as the third striker leaves me limited in terms of what I can do in midfield not just for GW1 but if say KDB or Haz emerge as an option. Also we don't know how he'll settle, IF Sanchez leaves I would reconsider but imagine the points will be largely shared.

Coutinho - New position at Liverpool? Mane, Firm, Salah are going to be the front 3? I think he's a nice price and had him in my initial draft BUT not sure on what kind of pitch time he will get, assured starter but he stung me a couple of times last season coming off on 59 minutes, having said that he's great to own.

Alli - Great price but Kane edges it for me, he will haul and haul again, Alli has his moments too but Kane even on a bad day gets points, so for me Kane is the Spurs player to go for. I don't mind throwing my eggs in one basket BUT with Wembley I really don't think Spurs will be AS great as they have been, therefore I'm waiting it out and going for coverage before gambling all in on Spurs. IF I chose to go without Kane, Alli would be an option for me no doubt.

The annoying thing about Alli is that I do not think he can be avoided at that price, especially if Spurs continue with wing backs. He scored 18 goals last season and 7? assists - he benefits from extra goal points and clean sheets. He ended up as the second highest points scorer on the game..but is priced at only 9.5. He is also young and improving.

That is causing me an issue with Kane, as I don't want to avoid Alli, but going for both with a new stadium seems a risk. It's alot of the budget.

Atm, I'm planning to avoid Kane till Lukaku's fixtures change - He cannot be avoided all season, but at 12.5 perhaps his characteristic slow starts, and the change from WHL, softens his appeal.

My problem with Alli is that he had 3/4 sensational gameweeks mid-season where he scored 3 braces in row.

Remove them and he's on 12 goals which isn't as great, still good. He's tough not to pick for sure BUT as I said above I don't want to overload on Spurs, on that basis it might be worth going for Alli (Or even Eriksen) for that Spurs cover and 3.0m in the bank.

I'm considering avoiding Kane now but he can be so so prolific, also on pens.

What do you all think of this team? Not certain about Salah but I have a very good gut feeling about of him

    Foster (Begovic)
    Kolasinac, Trippier, Cedric (Tomkins, Yedlin)
    Alli, Salah, Pedro, Stanislas (Carroll)
    Kaku, Jesus, Austin

Good except Tomkins. Every man and his dog seems to have drafted him, but de Boer is allegedly after three Dutch defenders and if only one comes in it should be at Tommo's expense.
