The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 1 – Friday

It’s almost like turn-based Fantasy Football.

Alexandre Lacazette’s 17.8% ownership will be more than happy with the night’s work from the Frenchman.

His goal and spritely performance was enough to provide comfort and early re-assurance for those who snubbed one or more of Romelu Lukaku, Harry Kane or Gabriel Jesus.

Lacazette scored one, he perhaps could and should have got more. He certainly did enough to indicate that he can justify the 10.5 Fantasy Premier League fee.

His non-owners must acknowledge that Lacazette showed promise, but they will also know that there are more turns to play out.

Jesus will go on Saturday, backed by a 13.6% ownership, with 30.7% of those handing him the captaincy for a trip to Brighton.

Then it will be Kane and Lukaku on Sunday, with the 49% owned Manchester United striker backed by over a million armbands.

Meanwhile, up on Tyneside, Kane will be part of 37.9% of squads and with 55% of his owners trusting him as their skipper.

Those captaincy percentages are telling.

For while Lacazette’s promising performance might already cause some to consider the saving from Lukaku or Kane, it’s significant that the pair are both backed by more than half of their Gameweek 1 owners with the armband.

Lacazette earned the faith of just 29.1% of his managers, with the majority doubtless turning to one of the two big-hitters.

And therein lies the difference.

The Arsenal striker was impressive, but there is plenty of ground to make up before we consider him at the same level as Kane and Lukaku as a captain.

For starters, we will want to assess the impact Olivier Giroud’s dramatic winner.

Once again he sprung from the Arsenal bench to send Arsene Wenger a message. Once again, as we saw with Alexis Sanchez last season, we will wonder if Giroud will eventually gain starts as the central striker, pushing Lacezette into a support role.

To an extent, we have the same worry with Jesus. Sergio Aguero’s presence could eventually shift the Brazilian to a flank or behind the lone striker at times.

How that will impact either striker is unknown. What we do know is that this is not a concern with Lukaku or Kane.

So while Lacazette convinced and demonstrated that he will have a say in our seasons, early talk of Arsenal’s new signing being elevated to their level seems premature.

He has the pair on their toes, and they will need to take their turn to shine.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Well, good luck with that. Looking at them they have players in the first team who used to be regular bench fodder for them.

Reckon their Supermarket Sweep of selling their best players will bite them any season soon. Shame.

Sold no-one of any importance and broke transfer record in signing Lemina. He wont feature in the starting XI just yet and obviously VVD is out. Boufal is finding his feet in his second season and players like Stephens are getting better. So I disagree.

And two of us have kane no kaku

It's that fear that meant I had to have both. Much better all round team without Kaku if he does not kick off he will get shipped pretty soon for midfield upgrade

That's why I went all 3,Jesus Kane, Kaku.

        Defence is fine

Midfield is a bit week however I thinks it's an easy move to downgrade the one with least promise after gw2 or 3 and use the 4/5 maybe 6 m to upgrade a mid and defender for a -4.

Saved me the headache of picking 2 of the 3 also

I had to have those 3 and went 523 to get it!!
Well Kola has worked out so far.
Only Salah and Zaha in mid right now - that can't last for long. Kaku downgrade seems most likely right now but if Jesus gets restricted minutes he might go.

Too early to say which one but yes, Lukaku would have been the one I left out of I was pushed to decide. The ownership got me though. I captained Kane but having him is a worry off my chest.

Salah, Fraser, Ritchie, Carroll and Zaha in midfield. Fraser will probably make way for Alli/DeBryune or whoever looks most promising

As an Arsenal fan a few thoughts:

    1. Our defence was missing Mertesacker, Mustafi and Koscielny, it will get better.
    2. Xhaka cost us dearly with some of Leicester's goals. He is great in opposition half but a burden in defence (or lack thereof)
    3. Kolasinic could be best PL signing of the season.
    4. Lacazette has that killer instinct, will score plenty.
    5. Giroud: what a header! Super sub if ever i've seen one...

From a FPL point of view, though, I think it's safe to stay clear and monitor for now. Attack looking very promising, but atm anything can happen with that team.

      Arsenal should:

      1) Sell Sanchez out of the PL
      2) Sell Ox
      3) Buy Lemar
      4) Buy a big, strong, mobile defensive midfielder

      Cech
      Mustafi Koscielny Monreal
      Bellerin ????? Xhaka Kolasinac
      Ozil Lemar
      Lacazette

Last night showed that nobody can predict who will score/assist and to go with your gut, don't follow the masses...

    Xhaka = two assists
    Giroud = goal
    Elneny = assist
    Vardy = 2 goals

And 99% on here would have called you crazy to select any of these players.

Danny Welbeck's doing an amazing job as the invisible man!

7.5m striker...looks like he'll be starting most games, scored last night and looked good.

Yet I can't recall seeing him in a single article, RMT or even anyone whispering his name.

Is NO-ONE interested in him as 3rd striker!?

      1. Sims

Loool 7.5 too much for someone taking an important arsenal spot

I disagree, assuming Sanchez is going to return, it'll be front 3 of Laca, Sanchez, Ozil. Welbeck is a million miles from disrupting those three. Giroud, Iwobi, Walcott all also competing.

Obviously you can't predict, its not about predicting. It's trying to make sense of statistics so you change the game to becoming a game of probability.

Its about being right more times than you are wrong.

Besides, opening game of the season, I wasn't expecting a clean sheet and neither defence is outstanding so..

On which site can we view potential price rises?

    1. Pep says

fplstatistics is the best one. I wouldn't worry bout it for the first few weeks because they will be adjusting their systems to suit whatever changes the FPL towers have made regards price changes.

Could take a few weeks to get it right. Last season during the doubles, they changed the thresholds and it took a while for these sites to catch on to what they had done.

So again, I wouldn't be transferring someone in in a hurry 1st GW of the season cause he 'might' be rising tonight. Take it easy. You wildcarded yesterday. Have faith in your picks. Save a transfer and have 2 next week. Take a hit then if you must but at least you get 3 moves for a hit, almost a mini wildcard

No worries. Remember these are not 100% accurate as they don't know exactly how fpl work the price changes.

They work it out pretty well as the season unfolds but until the 1st price changes happen, it's arguable that they don't yet have a clue how the price changes are going to work this season.

Save the transfer unless you have injuries. Things can't be that bad just now..

Who would you rather own long term/ for a draft league?

    A) Ramsey and Mounie

    B) Siggy and Abraham

B, because Siggy. Had him last year in my draft and was pure gold, even though loss of pens/some set-pieces assuming he moves to Everton will affect his output.

Bit of a dullard question - is there an fpl app I can download for a windows phone? The website works horribly on it unfortunately.

On the plus side it will probably force me to upgrade. Thanks.

If I remember correctly, player prices were going up and down at an alarming rate early last season.

This year there are a couple of 100K more teams from the get go. So, more active players and in imo more choices this year.

We're probably in for some real quick and annoying price changes, right?

    1. diesel001
      • 7 Years

Yes. It is why at the start of the season I think taking hits to protect value is fine.

Did that last year and was looking at a more conservative approach this season. It's going to be tempting, though...

I'm with you on this. I think hitting a GW1 bandwagon and dropping someone falling in price, if possible, is a better strategy than saving a FT for GW2.

All I'm saying is I've done this in the past few years and my highest overall rank of the season has come in the first three weeks each of the last three seasons.

Until alot of the knee jerky casuals give up, the price rises will be rapid yes. Just have to accept this as part of the game. I really hope we don't see too many discussions on this this season as last week there was enough to last the decade.

Its also arguable that some people will have learned that knee jerking isn't the way to play and may be a little more patient with their transfers having learned from last season.

But then again, my mate has set up with triple Everton and wouldn't be surprised to see him take a hit this week. He plays every year and just takes hits at will and is rubbish at FPL

I took a lot of hits last year and still ended up top 5K but in retrospect I know I would have been better off by if I had planned my transfers more carefully. I'm not all against building TV early on, though. Could be one of those things that you just have to do to be in contention later on... As you say, a part of the game.

Yesterday was a disaster. Need to decide already whether to wildcard to the team I wanted to start with or take a couple of hits over the next few weeks to progressively get there.
I'm leaning towards the hits as there will probably be players in form who will be better than the ones I'll wildcard to right?

I don't link my team as rivals are using this place too.

        Team is Ederson (Cech)

        Bellerin Toby Baines Bailly Rudiger

        Mata Willian Yaya Wijnaldum (Nolito)

        Benteke (Defoe Batshuayi)

Ha, the autopick went 5-4-1? How fashionable! I agree with others here that it's quite decent, really. I would swap out the non-playing mids ( Nolito, Yaya and probably Mata) before GW2 with hits and then sit back for a while. Blowing your WC before everyone else is not going to help.

Im happy with Lazettete performance. Arsenal team will get better over next few GW's if no major injuries interfere.. They played with a makeshift defence. Kos and Mustafi can sort that out.. Holding was very shaky yesterday... Lacazette will get goals im sure..
