The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 1 – Friday

It’s almost like turn-based Fantasy Football.

Alexandre Lacazette’s 17.8% ownership will be more than happy with the night’s work from the Frenchman.

His goal and spritely performance was enough to provide comfort and early re-assurance for those who snubbed one or more of Romelu Lukaku, Harry Kane or Gabriel Jesus.

Lacazette scored one, he perhaps could and should have got more. He certainly did enough to indicate that he can justify the 10.5 Fantasy Premier League fee.

His non-owners must acknowledge that Lacazette showed promise, but they will also know that there are more turns to play out.

Jesus will go on Saturday, backed by a 13.6% ownership, with 30.7% of those handing him the captaincy for a trip to Brighton.

Then it will be Kane and Lukaku on Sunday, with the 49% owned Manchester United striker backed by over a million armbands.

Meanwhile, up on Tyneside, Kane will be part of 37.9% of squads and with 55% of his owners trusting him as their skipper.

Those captaincy percentages are telling.

For while Lacazette’s promising performance might already cause some to consider the saving from Lukaku or Kane, it’s significant that the pair are both backed by more than half of their Gameweek 1 owners with the armband.

Lacazette earned the faith of just 29.1% of his managers, with the majority doubtless turning to one of the two big-hitters.

And therein lies the difference.

The Arsenal striker was impressive, but there is plenty of ground to make up before we consider him at the same level as Kane and Lukaku as a captain.

For starters, we will want to assess the impact Olivier Giroud’s dramatic winner.

Once again he sprung from the Arsenal bench to send Arsene Wenger a message. Once again, as we saw with Alexis Sanchez last season, we will wonder if Giroud will eventually gain starts as the central striker, pushing Lacezette into a support role.

To an extent, we have the same worry with Jesus. Sergio Aguero’s presence could eventually shift the Brazilian to a flank or behind the lone striker at times.

How that will impact either striker is unknown. What we do know is that this is not a concern with Lukaku or Kane.

So while Lacazette convinced and demonstrated that he will have a say in our seasons, early talk of Arsenal’s new signing being elevated to their level seems premature.

He has the pair on their toes, and they will need to take their turn to shine.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The other wtf-statistic: it doesn't look like he/she spent a penny more than £80m for the entire team? So, ok... some might think it's fun to 'king for a day', but why not at least attempt at a competitive squad for the remaining 9 players?...lol
**and then as I was writing this, I realized they're one of those 'team-value nutz' ...entire team is priced so low, they can only go up in value! Those lot don't care about the actual point system; and he's the #1 in the game! Lol!...at least for a few hrs..

you should see the leaderboards for the sky game , most of the top 100 just have Arsenal and Leicester players packed into their team , most of them will no doubt use their quota of 5 weekly subs for tomorrow too in the scramble to finish top for the week , its pretty sad

not really. There are always such teams packed with players from one matchday to be momentarily on top.

Kind of an off-topic question. Do any of you worry that FPL adversely affects how you enjoy the game (and the matches)? Each year I put together a squad (at least partially because it gives me something to do), and each year I immediately regret it once the season starts and I can't just simply sit down and watch a match without thinking about the fantasy implications of everything happening. Unfortunately, by that point I've put in so much time trying to build that GW1 squad that I feel like I've got to stick with it.

I don't know. Just wondered if I was the only one. And you think that I'd just learn and stop playing. But, well, I guess I'm just a bit slow...

Agree with this point but also can't deny when your rival team's player is in your FPL team it can be an uncomfortable trade off. I might give it a break next season. Supporting Utd I mean, love this shit.

Yes but it is too late to do anything about it now Pandora's box has been opened.

There is only 1 way out by becoming fpl champion and retiring.

I like watching the games from an FPL point of view, not only when my players are involved but scouting other players too. I'm just having fun doing that and it adds some pretty intense moments in a lot of games, that's cool. I'm a United fan and when it comes down to their games I forget all about FPL so I guess I'm not too crazy about the game, just know your limits. But I'm sure addicted and can't see myself spending a season without playing it, would feel so empty haha.

As a United fan, it's been a welcome distraction over the past few seasons as we've floundered in the league. However, if we started to challenge for the title again and it got to the business end of the season, I'm not sure how I'd feel wanting my Captain Kane, Jesus or Hazard to bag a hat-trick. Or God-forbid a Captain Mane or Firmino 😉

I think it makes me enjoy football as a sport a lot more as I know a lot more about the smaller teams and how individual players are performing.

The only downside is cheering on my Man U / Everton players while being a Liverpool supporter.

I definitely wouldn't watch any games outside of Liverpool and maybe the occasional big game if it wasn't for FPL.

    DDG
Stephens / Yoshida / Trent Arnold

    Jesus / Kun / Lukaku

      Welcome!

I would be worried about doubling up on Kun & Jesus. It might work out in some instances, but probably not overall. And given the fact that you've got KDB as well, you're really ManC top-heavy.

In the long run, you're probably going to run into problems at the back as well. TAA is kind of just filling in. Rangel probably won't start a lot. All this means you're stuck with two from Southampton and Mee (which isn't great).

That said, just a few things to shift around (and you should have the money if you sell Jesus or Kun) in order to spruce it up a bit.

It generally frowned upon, but I like that you've gone full bore for teams you believe in. If you think City will score 5 most weeks and Saints will keep clean sheets most week, your strategy has merit. Your midfield, however, is a bit weak for a 3-4-3 in that RLC and Mkhi are not certain of their place.

      1. Monster Munch
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

Exactly Diva! That's the idea, tho RLC is the weak link -
happy to chance it as he's 4.5m - but will have to watch closely. The risk is starting with him as a core mid rather than on bench. Also nice opening fixture so figured let's dice roll the Zaha-RLC double up. 😉

Second off-topic question of the night. Does anyone enjoy the build-up to GW1 more than the rest of the season? For me, there is something really pleasurable about tinkering with a squad and living in a realm of possibility. You get to scheme and research and guess and hope, but then the season kicks off and...I don't know. It's just the grind of the season. I just know that as excited as I am for the season to start, it's sad to see the end of the squad selection/guessing/hoping that comes with it.

Nah, not for me. What I do enjoy is analysing the data and trying to make sense of all the numbers. In GW1 I have very few numbers to work with and I feel like I am 'guessing' a lot of the time. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I like the idea of solving problems with my team each week and I like watching matches, analysing the important information provided to come up with a decision that will help my team in the long run. In GW1, I feel like there is too much luck involved.

No i actually find the build up to a new season over hyped and quite drawn out.

I enjoy the weekly opera of fpl and really like the game around Christmas and double game weeks when the games are coming tick and fast and we are tested to our limits.

My favorite time in any gw is just before the deadline when all us managers are filled with blind optimism about our squads and dreams of glory before the cold reality of the gw sets in.

Thx a lot Gobstopper, makes sense. City do have resonantly decent early fixtures and Kun seems so unfairly off the radar - nobody talking about him at all yet he has looked ok in preseason. If he starts and is fit in that team he will always be in the mix. Sure Jesus will take some of his points, but they can also both start together (their limited stats when playing together are very good). I also feel Pep now after 1 season learning the Prem ropes and with the new signings is all about Barca style rapid attacks from almost anywhere and hopefully some goal feasts to go with that - plus plenty of assists for KDB and Jesus with their style of play. Southampton with nice fixtures for a while wanted double up, toyed with 3 (adding Bertrand), but that would mean dropping DDG.

Also as I'm in a league with over 100 people wanted some non-template with potential to be explosive early then reduce some City/Southampton concentration risk a bit later.

2 or even 3 defenders from the same team makes sense (I've got Forster, Stephens and Bertie) because they're not too expensive.

Kaku and Rashford could be viable since the latter is only 7.5m but two premium forwards would have to emulate Studge/Suarez and that ain't gonna happen again!

But I do also have Mkhi/Kaku and KdB/Jesus. I don't believe in 'coverage' and as you can see like doubling up where I have faith in a team and its fixtures.

You could be on to something there. If ManC goes total Barcelona on the PL, it would be like arguing that you shouldn't have Messi, Neymar, and Suarez in your lineup at the same time (if you could pull it off, money-wise). Interesting perspective...

There's no good average to have. High ownership players performing well can hurt your rank if you don't have them, lower ownership players performing well can help your rank if you have them.

I tried really hard to maintain a 5-2-3 with a power 3 up top and only 2 decent mids, but just couldn't get the balance right. In the end I've plumped for a 5-3-2/4-4-2.

In short, after endless experimenting, no I couldn't justify going top-heavy.

It doesn't matter where your points come from as long as you get them. It is just as legitimate to have three big ofrwards and one big mid as 2 big forwards and 2 big mids. It is just pushing money around

    6. lugs
      • 6 Years
      6 years, 7 months ago

its all a matter of perspective , i have 3 big hitters up front this year , but i also think i have a decent enough midfield , others might disagree but that doesn't matter cos i can see the potential in it , King was a cheap midfielder last year for example , but look how that turned out

    7. Freddo
      • 6 Years
      6 years, 7 months ago

Playing a 3 man midfield of Alli, Fabregas and RLC/Carroll until one 6.5m and under seems worth it as right now they are all punty.

Two out there isn't bad and worth it for Kane, Lukaku and Jesus.

In reality it's no different to reversing things and having three maxed out mids, one premium striker, a medium striker and a cheap one to hop on and off with.

      Open your mind.

If you've watched Xhaka lately you wouldn't be surprised, he's started to dictate games and is more offensive with his passing then he gets credit for.

Takes set pieces and is become a key midfielder, only downside is his bookings but he seems to be more controlled now.

Not every player has to be template to be pickabke, watching the games is a good start.
