The Technical Area – Spurs’ Wembley Woes

Another Gameweek, another Harry Kane blank.

As covered in Sunday’s Knee Jerk, it wasn’t supposed to be like this, so in this week’s Technical Area we’ll be digging through the rubble of another disappointing weekend at Wembley and dissecting exactly what seems to be ailing Spurs – and in particular their talismanic forward.

Messing around with the idea of a WC for the next international break..

Whats the basics we would like to cover:
~ Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs..
~ Then see what is happening with City team sheets and ARS form..
~ Grab and bargain cheapies that look good..

If it was now id be considering the below..
    Pickford - Elliot
    Alonso - Jones/ Lindelof - Trippier - Naughton - Mbemba
    Salah - Pogba - Mooy - Jese - Carroll
    Kane - Firmino - Morata

Looks nice! Do you think Morata better asset than Hazard then? I.e. Morata plus cheap mid better than Hazard plus cheap striker

I like it but Trippier isn't nailed on with Aurier coming in and maybe downgrade Pickford to Foster for a spare 0.5?

EVE fixtures will be better, SWA could be nice for 4.5 wing back, Stoke fixtures are good then, and Morata should be the main che asset (will monitor Haz)

I transferred him out as I'm on a WC, he will probably drop in price before the deadline. The next time he plays for Spurs it won't be August anymore so he will probably score a hat-trick though.

Save FT or not? 0.5m in the bank

    Foster
    Stephens - Yoshida - Hegazi
    Mane - Alli - Mkhitaryan - Phillips
    Aguero - Kane - Chicharito

    Elliot - Carroll - Long - Rosenior

Thinking Aguero ➡ Morata/Laca could be an option but then City-Liverpool could very well be high scoring with Aguero getting decent points. I'll have 1 more week of data as well.

    Thoughts?

Apologies in advance for the long post.
I've been pondering the bench boost recently, and it's optimal usage. Of course we have only had two seasons with the new chips, so this is all conjecture at this point, as there is no data to support my hypothesis, but isn't it possible that a good way to use it would be in tandem with the first wildcard?

    My reasons that led me to think this were;
    1. Last year, many bench boosted in GW37, thinking to take advantage of the two extra "baseline" points that their players would get on the bench meaning that even in case of total disaster, a bench fully comprising of DGWKers would still get 16 points.
However, most users of the BB in this GWK either lost out on optimal starting 11 value in order to field a decent bench (keeping in mind that many had saved their wc up to this point so had decent flexibility in this regard) or benched players like Anichebe who you would not really expect to perform well, resulting in many complaints that drowned out this forum for a long time. This means that the BB and the DGW can compromise each other, in the sense that points gained from the bench might be at the cost of more value in the starting 11.
    2. Generally last year, the Triple Captain chip paid off hugely for those who saved it for the DGW, as many TC'ed Sanchez or Kane to great effect. The Triple Captain was also well used the year before in the DGW'S. This means that using BB in a DGW is effectively limiting your options to capitalise on that one massive haul in the most spectacular way possible. If you use it previously, there is no longer a headache as to when the best time to use both is.
    3. Using the second wildcard to help with the BB is a popular tactic, but could end up with managers soldiering through tough times when they would have used the wildcard ordinarily to restructure the team and field a more desirable 11 for the coming weeks, instead taking low scores in the comfort that they would have an absolutely bumper DGW BB.
    4. The first wildcard, however, is generally used reasonably early on anyway as managers press the button in a drunken rage or wish to take advantage of upcoming trends so using it in tandem with the BB would not mean waiting overly longer or less than they normally would; instead of waiting till the DGW to wildcard, each manager could identify when they would ideally want to WC and plan their BB accordingly.

There would be two ways to use the BB in tandem with the first wildcard; Before its use, and after its use.

BB before the activation of the wildcard:
This would be optimal in my point of view, as a manager could structure their team and bench prior to the season's beginning (an option no longer available to us, unfortunately) with an eye to BB in a particular week, taking advantage of great fixtures and shortly afterward Wildcarding the unused value (and potential selection headache) into their starting 11.
BB after activation of the wildcard:
In this scenario, a manager would construct a bench using form and fixtures as a guide, selecting a bench to perform well on a given week shortly after the wc, and then slowly moving the value back into the squad over the next few weeks. I feel like this option would not be suitable for the transfer averse, as potentially you'd be using three or four transfers saving money to convert your BB'ed bench back to fodder.

I was going to do a pros and cons list but decided that would be too much and I'm tired of this anyway 😛 . Any thoughts and opinions on this would appreciated, would be nice to hear some other views on the Bench Boost and its usage.

And no, I'm not going to TL;DR 😀

      Urgh not this again.

Benchboost is best in a DGW. More players, more mins, more chance of points. It's just that simple.

You've overthought this and ended up with a mad convoluted scheme.

      1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

Fair enough, but it's such a lottery that your players will do well anyway, surely using your second wildcard when you need it and not saving for a DGW is a valid advantage of this idea?

        1. noquarternt
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 7 months ago

You're buying more tickets in the lottery with a DGW bench boost.

Your plan gives you 15 players.

A bench boost in a dgw could give you 25->30 players.

That's double the potential 2pts for 90 mins. Double the chance for clean sheets, double the time to get a goal, double potential bonus points etc.

          It's just obvious.

Did this the two last years. Sooooo much rotation that it doesn't work out like you have said. I had 4 players on my bench all with 2 fixtures each and were regulars. Just played 5 games between them all and they couldn't muster 10 points between them

Your first point hits the nail on the head namely this part "However, most users of the BB in this GWK either lost out on optimal starting 11 value in order to field a decent bench". Imo it is much more valuable to maintain the strongest 11 with he best heavy hitters than sacridice them to gain a more well rounded 11. Also the TC gains you the most points trust me on this. Prioritise putting the TC on the best player with the best dgw fixtures.

That was the main thought behind it really, the others came after I thought about it more. The BB is also probably more of a lottery than the TC; it is easier to predict one premiym players good performance than try to predict 4 budget player's good performances and planning for it from before.

So what are our thoughts on Bench boost for this year? The last two years I've waited until the big double game week to use it but to be honest it didn't work out at all either time. So much rotation at that time of the season!
I'm thinking of using it this week with a bench of Elliot (swa), Dann (bur) Mee (CPL) and T.Carroll (NEW).

    What are you guys planning?

If Rafa gets a new gk then that's likely to be the end of a playing reserve keeper for me too. Hate rotating keepers. Plus every chance that i'll have a 4.0 5th def too when i wildcard

Tbh it's not a bad wildcard team. They all have potential except maybe T Carrol.

I'm thinking of using it in a single GW this season too but I just know that if I do that then it will be a massive success in the doubles this time around.

Had just enough to do Gabbiadini to Firmino on a free, which leaves me this team:

    de Gea / Elliot
    Davies / Yoshida / Dawson / Rosenior / Long
De Bruyne / Pogba / Willian / Atsu / Carroll
    Kane / Lukaku / Firmino

    0FT / £0.0 ITB

Should be okay for next GW, shouldn't it?

International break and injuries could derail. Not sure about Willian too

Should be okay if you get away with no injuries over the break. Would think of getting rid of debruyne next

what are the chances of these 4 defenders getting dropped:

    A - Yoshida
    B - P.Jones
    C - Mbemba
    D - Hegazi

    1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…
      • 7 Years

Jones probably won't be dropped unless there is injury. Mbemba is very probable, and sooner rather than later. Hegazi is possible, and so is Yoshida

Thinking about wildcarding during the break ... thoughts on Tammy Abraham - is he nailed? To the bench when Llorente comes back?

One of the guys I play football with wants to bring his young lad to play this week because he "can't get a babysitter"
It's a weekly 7-a-side game, I'd describe it as a "competitive friendly" - there's no league or refs or anything like that, and the teams are different every week depending on who's "in" and who's "out" - however, for most of us it's the only football we play - so we take it pretty seriously once the game has started.
The youngest of our group is 25, this kid is no older than 11.

Am I being a killjoy if I say no? Surely its dangerous for a CHILD to play with fully grown men?
It's happened before without warning and I found it really difficult to constantly adapt throughout the game, one minute standing-off and going easy on a kid, then having to go in to a full-blooded challenge with the guy he's just passed the ball to, seconds later. On and off, all game.

Not at all being a killjoy imo. Basic safety. Maybe if he was 15/16ish, but an 11 year old? What happens if one of you just runs into the kid?

        EXACTLY!
When I said "it's happened before unannounced", that was actually last week! Nobody knew this kid was playing until he lined up with the team before the game, when he arrived I just assumed he was there to watch.

Ouch. If the precedent is with the same kid it'll be tough to say no, I see where you're coming from. I guess you have to take a stand now.

The kid can only play if you get to join in with some 11 year olds and humiliate them.

Is it worth using a WC with this team?
    Foster, Elliott,
    Bertrand, Bailly, Danilo, Mee, Hunemeier
    Eriksen, Pogba, Ramsey, Ritchie, Carroll
    Lukaku, Firmino, Jesus

1FT, 0.3 ITB. Concerns are Danilo and Jesus primarily, though I want rid of Ramsey too and want Mane/Salah..

    Thoughts?

I had a funny dream last night that I met Mark, Jonty and Andy for a beer and that they all lived in the same apartment block.

Mark gave me some cracking FPL secrets and Andy gave me sound advise on the best Taxi's in the area 😀
