Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 4 – Monday

Slaven Bilic relieves the pressure as he turns to a three-man defence, big Andy Carroll and an emphasis on crosses against a stubborn Huddersfield Town. A fortunate deflection sets them on their way, as the popular Chicharito fails to stem a tide of Fantasy sales.

Chicharito blanks in Carroll return

Owned by an army of 1.4 million Fantasy Premier League managers (27.7%), Chicharito was also burdened with the responsibility of 164,000 captaincy picks.

With Carroll returning to make a first start since April, he was very much playing off the big striker, with the Geordie the focal point of the Hammers attack down the middle.

But Chicharito had his opportunity – a first half effort which clipped the crossbar, one of only two touches in the box he enjoyed all evening.

More worryingly, it was the Mexican rather than the battle-weary Carroll who made way first, hooked on 63 minutes.

Shifted by 164,000 heading in Gameweek 4 and another 50,000 before he even kicked a ball last night, Chicharito’s sales now look likely to pick up pace.

His role could change to living off the knockdowns and scraps if the Hammers look to an aerial threat as a priority.

With Andre Ayew replacing him to score and assist, plus the return of Marko Arnautovic and Manuel Lanzini perhaps forcing a change of shape, there could even be mounting concerns on Chicharito’s minutes while Carroll remains available.

Doubts over his prospects come as a blow, given the current dearth of viable forward options around the 7.0 price tag.

Cresswell dominates set plays

While Michail Antonio was the most effective and eye-catching attacker on show at the London Stadium, Fantasy managers should also note the role played by Aaron Cresswell throughout.

Deployed as a wing-back in Slaven Bilic’s 3-4-2-1, Cresswell hogged set-pieces right and left and ended the match with 19 crosses – more than any other player in Gameweek 4.

Of course, this might not continue.

Arnautovic has now served out his ban and will surely be a factor on dead balls in the Gameweek 5 trip to West Brom.

Lanzini will be another protagonist at set-plays, although his return date remains uncertain as he continues to recover from a knee injury.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Advice on team?

    Lloris
    Luis / Walker / Vertonghen
    Pogba / Wijnaldum / Xhaka / Matic
    Jesus / Lukaku / Firmino

Subs: Boruc / Rangel / Carroll / Yoshida

1.3m left in bank. Was hoping to get Kane in with minimal transfers...

Eh, you don't need Kane with those strikers imo. Besides, Kane shouldn't be your main concern, as your midfield is quite poor. I would try downgrading your defenders or a forward to upgrade your mids.

I like most of it. There's a few things I don't like. You have no keepers which doesn't seem wise. You are missing a defender, again not a great tactic. You have Clark who has strong competition for starts. Rest looks very good.

Not a fan as I think arsenals Def has better options than Luiz. Mounie is a old bandwagon Hernandez or firmino. Richarislon looks ok but a little more gets Ramsey or moting and even Brady have better stats. Buts just in my opinion good luck with the WC mate

That 5 ITB is a great Kane fund, can almost do a straight swap for Gabbiadini. But looks like you need a -8 and a Salah/Eriksen/Pogba downgrade to get both Kane and Davies in.

On a wildcard and defense is currently:

    Kolasinac / Davies / Cedric / Naughton / 4.0

Now, because it's a wildcard, would it be better to either downgrade Cedric to a 4.5 defender and have three 4.5 defenders who rotate based on fixtures?

    using this article https://mathematicallysafe.wordpress.com/2017/06/17/fantasy-premier-league-fpl-201718-strategy-three-way-budget-defender-rotation/

teams such as Palace/Leicester/Watford or Palace/Leicester/Swansea all have pretty much perfect rotation till gameweek 33. I just feel that with a wildcard in play, I have to look towards the long term, and only having 4 starting defenders may lead to troubles down the line.

I could also downgrade Kolasinac to Bertrand and then have 5.0/4.5/4.5 rotation with Daniels from Bournemouth or Dann from Crystal Palace, though then I would end up leaving a possible goal-threat defender on the bench some weeks...

Cedric & Naughton offer at least 1 good fixture till gameweek 14 when they play ManC and Chelsea away respectively, and then I'll have to consider transfers out for them

Basically is it worth having all defenders playing and rotating them for the long term, or keeping a 4.0 defender for the short term

    1. Pierce34
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 7 months ago

You get more points by spending the extra money on the midfield or attack than by getting 5 rotating defenders. You'd often end up benching clean sheets or the odd defender goal or assist anyway, these are harder to predict than they look on the surface.

    2. Tansey
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 7 months ago

Rotation is important but I can guarantee that by GW33 you will not still have the same defence, you could have a completely different one. A bit too long-term IMO, maybe that's just cause I can't stick to plans

    3. Snevitz

I'd much rather have the £4.5 players who actually play, gives you more options each week.

      1. Pierce34
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

I'm not saying have a whole bench of non-playing players, but one 4.0 (ideally one with good chances of playing of course) goes a long way.

Benching headaches often result in benched points too.

He's very tempting if Bilic continues the same formation. But Arnautovic and Lanzini are due back soon, which might change that. They'd also take some set pieces away from Cresswell. One to monitor once all players are back.

Is it me or is the sub 8.5m striker and sub 8.3m midfielder a complete waste land?

Sure Richarlison, Jesé, Brady, choupo, Abraham, etc may come good but it's pretty slim pickings and they are all punts.

I'm really struggling with a structure that fits it, currently going with 5 x 8.5m+ premium attackers + just one waste land punt and 2x 4.5 benched mids in a 4-3-3.

Anyone come up with a better way of dealing with it?

    Afternoon,

I resisted the urge to use my wildcard last week and save my transfer with the aim of getting my squad 'sorted' this week with 2FT's. How I am going to do that is a mystery to me!?!?

    Begovic - Ryan
    Stones - Cedric - Mee - Naughton - Dawson
    KDB - Pogba - Willian - J.W.Prowse - Carroll
    Kane - Lukaku - Hernandez
    0.3 ITB

    I'm thinking of shipping 2 of -
    Willian
    J.W.Prowse
    Stones
    KDB
    Hernandez

    Would appreciate your input!

    Take -4 or WC?

    Foster | Elliot
    Cedric | Naughton | Mee | Danilo | Long
    Alli | Mkhi | Mane | Pogba | Carroll
    Lukaku | Firminio | Gabbi

    Danilo > Davies
    Mane > KDB

Need to take Gabbi out at some point. Will struggle to get Kane in unless WC.
