The Watchlist Updated – Goalkeepers

With the time to take stock over the international break, we’ve updated our Watchlist rankings to aid those mulling over their Wildcard options ahead of Gameweek 8.

The Watchlist can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

These rankings give an indication of our current thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

Swansea City custodian Lukasz Fabianski is our favoured keeper over the mid-term.

Paul Clement’s men play four times at home in the next six, as Huddersfield, Leicester City, Brighton and Bournemouth make their way to the Liberty Stadium. With a visit to Burnley also looming, only a Gameweek 10 trip looks seriously problematic, with save points likely to be on offer against Fabianski’s former club.

The Pole ticks a number of boxes for those shopping for a new keeper.

At least four FPL points clear of any defensive team-mate, his price of 4.5 offers the joint-cheapest route into the Swans’ rearguard.

He also leads the way for total saves (30) over the first seven Gameweeks and has returned seven save points already, more than any other stopper.

Yet there are alternatives in defence in the sub-5.0 bracket among the Swans ranks. Kyle Naughton’s raids down the right have already delivered an assist, while Federico Fernandez is the bonus point leader, with five to his name already.

Newcastle’s Rob Elliot remains the cheapest starting keeper in FPL and arguably remains the current low-cost “fire-and-forget” option to rival Fabianski.

After seven Gameweeks, the Magpies have only conceded more than one goal on one occasion – against Spurs in the season opener after going down to 10 men.

Having blunted Liverpool’s attack in Gameweek 7, Rafa Benitez’s men can look to the upcoming schedule with a greater degree of confidence, with five very decent match-ups (sot CRY bur BOU WAT) over the next six.

Elliot’s value remains exceptional as a route into a defence that has conceded just six times and claimed two clean sheets.

In addition, while defender Chancel Mbemba has previously offered a 4.0 alternative in Benitez’s rearguard, he was omitted from the squad against Liverpool. The DR Congo international would seem unlikely to oust Javier Manquillo at Southampton in Gameweek 8 following long-haul flights over the international break.

The only caveat with Elliot is perhaps a lack of saves and therefore the opportunity to return additional points, including bonus. He has earned just one save point in his last three outings, with his Magpies’ defence restricting opponents’ efforts on goal.

Joe Hart’s budget-friendly price tag is also key to his lofty position in our current listing.

Still valued at just 4.5, he offers the least expensive route into a West Ham defence that has chalked up three clean sheets in the last four Gameweeks.

Clashes against Burnley, Brighton, Crystal Palace and Watford over the next five offer Slaven Bilic’s side the opportunity to maintain that recent upturn in defensive form.

Yet, like Elliot, Hart has been struggling for save points – he’s supplied just one of the first seven matches.

If you have funds to spend, though, Aaron Cresswell represents a more appealing option at 5.0 – he’s ranked top among defenders for crosses and successful crosses and is placed second only to Spurs’ Ben Davies for chances created.

Just two points off the top of the keeper standings, Southampton’s Fraser Forster still has the schedule to build momentum before the fixtures turn in Gameweek 12.

Compelling home encounters with Newcastle, West Brom and Burnley in the next four, allied with a trip to Brighton, suggests he can add to his three clean sheets.

Having racked up seven save points in as many fixtures, Forster’s appeal is also strengthened by the uncertainty surrounding the likely starters in central defence at Southampton.

Along with Cedric Soares, he’s the cheapest of the definite starters under Mauricio Pellegrino, but has so far chalked up 15 points more than the Portuguese right-back.

Stoke City’s Jack Butland is likely to climb in our estimations once his daunting trip to Man City has passed.

The Potters have mustered just a single clean sheet and shipped 11 goals thus far, but that’s partly down to an evil opening schedule. After the Etihad visit has passed, they will have played six of last season’s top eight in the first eight matches.

From Gameweek 9, though, Mark Hughes side have six strong fixtures (BOU wat LEI bha cry SWA) in the subsequent seven to improve that record.

At a cost of 5.0, Butland’s prospects may be dented if Kevin Wimmer or Geoff Cameron – both at 4.4 – can claim a regular spot at the back over that run.

Much could depend on the return of Ryan Shawcross. Stoke conceded just two goals in the first three Gameweeks, but have since shipped nine in the subsequent four with their skipper sidelined with another back injury.

With Burnley skipper Tom Heaton nursing a dislocated shoulder, Nick Pope looks set to benefit from the Clarets’ kind upcoming schedule.

Since replacing the stricken Heaton in Gameweek 4, Pope has registered four save points and three bonus points in four appearances, with Sean Dyche’s defence conceding just twice during that spell.

Pope hosts West Ham, Newcastle and Swansea and travels to Southampton in the next five, fixtures that suggest he will continue offering value at 4.5. Burnley also work very efficiently with Swansea as a rotation pairing up to Gameweek 20, providing a convincing combination for those favouring Fabianski.

Impressively, Pope has saved 94.4% of shots faced this season (17/18), a higher percentage than any keeper, with Heaton back on 66.6%.

Yet the likes of Stephen Ward and Ben Mee offer greater attacking upside at 4.6 and 4.5 in the Burnley defence, while the similarly-priced James Tarkowski is the number one player for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) so far.

Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel (5.0) also has some kind fixtures and faces just two of last season’s top six in the next 11 Gameweeks.

Like Pope, though, there are more attractive options in his back four, with the 5.1-priced Harry Maguire already providing a goal and two assists this season.

Yet Schmeichel has matched Maguire for points (33) so far, having produced six bonus and six save points.

Manchester City’s Ederson (5.5) clearly has the form to warrant attention, with just two goals against in the opening seven Gameweeks.

Back-to-back home matches with Stoke and Burnley, allied with trips to West Brom and Leicester in the next five, affords him the platform to record further defensive returns.

Team-mate Nicolas Otamendi (5.7) is a more appealing option at minimal extra outlay. The Argentine has already found the net, while only two defenders have managed more efforts in the box than his six.

However, while Otamendi has so far been immune to Pep Guardiola’s rotation, this will always be a threat hanging over the Man City defence. Otamendi also sits on three bookings – pick up another yellow card, and he will surely be more vulnerable should Guardiola’ attempt to manage a potential suspension.

Ederson, along with Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois (5.5), arguably has the strongest fixtures of any premium-priced keeper, right up to the first Wildcard curfew after Gameweek 21.

Courtois’ stock, while strong heading into a lengthy favourable schedule, is dented by the appeal of attacking options in the Chelsea defence – namely Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Elsewhere, Brighton’s Mat Ryan (4.5) is braced for four solid home fixtures (EVE SOT STK CPL) in the next seven, with trips to West Ham and Swansea also on his agenda.

Those Amex Stadium matches could be key, given that the Seagulls chalked up 12 shut-outs and conceded just 14 goals in 23 home fixtures last season.

After losing 2-0 against City in their first home match, Chris Hughton’s men have conceded just once in the subsequent two, with Ryan earning a save point in two of his three home appearances.

However, his appeal hampered by the identically-priced Shane Duffy, who usurps Lewis Dunk as our preferred Brighton defender. Duffy is joint-top defenders for shots in the box (seven) and ranks second for CBI.

So I've just done the BBC team selector for England going into the 2018 world cup. This is the best team I can come up with that gives balance to the team.

    I've gone with a 4-2-3-1 tactic.

    Butland
    Walker Cahill Jones Rose
    Dier Henderson
    Sterling Alli Welbeck
    Kane

Of course we'd have to wait on Rose but the obvious replacement would be Bertrand for me. The weak link in the team is probably Henderson but I can't seem to find a two way player that is as good. Delph doesn't get enough minutes with City for me, Carrick is too slow, Ox is not good enough defensively there, Drinkwater doesn't get games, JWP isn't as commanding in that position either. Sadly Henderson is the only player that can play there.

If I go 3-5-2 with wingbacks, the team struggles in the central positions as England simply doesn't not have the creativity or the transition play to counter swiftly.

In my opinion, England's best chance of getting far in the competition would be to pack the midfield and force boring possession games. This will mean alot of keep ball and lateral passes. England just doesn't have players like Iniesta or Neymar that can unlock defences with ease.

Strengths: England have decent width, not amazing but good enough
Weaknesses: England's central areas are lacking. I cannot find a good partner for Dier.

What would you change from this team? Would you change formations?

I don't think Rashford is good enough. He's playing with no real responsibility at the moment. Noone expects him to bang goals in all the time which is why he gets away with only scoring 5 goals a season for united. I personally think it's a mistake putting a player like this in a world cup team. I'd only reserve the right to do this for players like Messi or iniesta at that age, but Rashford is not in the same league at all.

How do we go from Gerrard/Lampard/Scholes/Hargreaves to this sorry lot in midfield? I like Henderson but this does not look good.

It has to be Henderson OR Dier plus one other, preferably a creative mid.

Sounds bonkers but we need Shelvey or Wilshere to have really good seasons.

England just lacks creative midfielders. Wilshere will not be the answer. Shelvey is not at the level we need in my opinion. I do agree we lack creative midfielders which is why I'm saying we need to play to our strengths and just pack the midfield. We won't beat teams with ease but we can if we play defensive and counter. In our friendlies, we need to play teams that keep the majority of the ball so we can practice countering well.

I'm not sure Kane works in a counter attacking team. We can't rely on Rashford and Sterling for productivity... they're too young.

I think we'd be amazed at the impact of dropping Henderson in terms of attacking build-up play. It's the same for Liverpool; he's fantastic at winning the ball back, but he's too hyper in possession and just isn't composed or cute.

Kane can adapt to the counter attacking play i feel. I agree we can't rely on Rashford since he's only played 12 games for England and had a handful of appearances at Youth level for England. I think this is Sterling's breakout year and so this is the year where he can truly make his position his own in the England team.

I agree with the Henderson assessment. The type of player is what we need but we just need someone better than Henderson. Unfortunately there's no one else

Yep, seems like it.. there's a real dearth of creative but disciplined centre mids for England. In the friendlies, I'd still include Shelvey and Wilshere and see if they take their chance.

Henderson would still be first pick in tough games where we need his legs and will play on the counter.

We just have too many of those attack minded midfield centers where we really need a dembele, Kroos, Schweinstiger type player.

Wouldn't Alli be ineffectual in a deeper role? Do you really trust him to come back and defend? You're risking the balance of the team for the pace of Rashford. I'd much prefer Rashford come off the bench and run against tired players.

I think Alli has it in his bag and he would be a better partner to Dier they would have a better chemistry and Alli would bring a bit of creativity to the middle of the park imo.

Thing is central midfield is a different game than attacking midfield center. You bear more responsibility in that position especially when you're a two way player. Alli hasn't practiced it enough and he's not going to from now until the end of the season. I personally don't think Alli has the attributes to play such a role as I don't trust his defensive attributes. I think he's great going forward as he like to run beyond the striker on many occassions however I don't see Gareth or Pochettino trusting the keys of the midfield to a 21 year old that doesn't play in that position regularly.

Rooney tried it and failed and Rooney is alot more suited to the role in my opinion. Again it was the defensive capabilities that failed for him. Lack of tracking his marker the other way cost United goals when he played there.

Well Dier will still be there to do most of the dirty work at the end of the day.

Alli is 21 now and has learned a lot and is blossoming into a fine footballer, the boy has more in his bag than running in behind he can also find a pass or two when he wants to.

I think if he got the chance to play a deeper role he would do very well he would be well able for the physical battle in midfield.

I dont think Lallana will answer England's problems and Alli and Rashford could be the key.

Give youth a chance and you will be rewarded.

I think Alli is a very average midfielder at best. He plays better on the half turn and finding space in the box.

He has been good in the last two seasons so for that I think he deserves his place. If he is out of form in the run up to the World cup, then I'd have no problem switching him out for any other players that we can play in that position. He's not integral to the way England play in my opinion.

      Rashford surely better than Wellbs

Cahill is not the best in a back 4, would rather have Keane or Maguire, Stones

Lalla should be in there somewhere and

why is everyone complaining about Henderson all the time, people obviously don´t see a lot of football because Henderson is a pretty decent and by far one of England best CM, Dier and him i would say. People look at his running style and seems to forget that football is about lot more than just fancy tricks. Extremely good defensive wise, 1 vs 1, he does have good allround qualities on the ball, and positioning wise he is very good. His reading of the game is excellent. Yes, he lacks pace, yes he does

Taken off early in 5 of his 7 games, started as sub in 1, only played 90 mins once, think that's more meaningful statistic for him as a fantasy option, more so than the fact that he's not scored away from home yet.

Wenger doesn't seem as fully invested in him as he should, poor pick right now when you consider the alternatives.

              stop with this Henderson mocking

he is not a Pirlo or Eriksen but that is not his role and he is actually quite good at what he does, and what one could expect from a DCM? England problems are far beyond the lack of a Pirlo in CM... For one thing, it is further forward the lacks of creativity is not to be found, as much as i like Lallana as a player, there should be a more creative midfielder in there. Alli is not creative, Rashford is just pacy, Sterling is more of runner. Barkley at his best, but he is so poor in defense you´d rather have someone else. Problem is not that it lacks good english players, but there´s not much variety there to choose from. That creates team with players that are too like (for instance, Dier and Henderson)

            -Kolasinac - Davies - Alonso - Mee-

            ------Coutinho - Silva - Surman-----

            --------Kane (c) - Lukaku - Vardy-----

            Subs: Elliot - Carroll, Loftus-Cheek - Rangel

So I was dead set on doing Mkhi to Sterling this week and all of a sudden I've realised I can do Lukaku and Eriksen > Jesus and Hazard.

            Is that a bad idea?

Losing Eriksen before Bournemouth is risky. You could just do Lukaku > Jesus and switch Eriksen out next week? But obviously you'd be missing the Crystal Palace fixture.

I would do it,next 5 for Man.utd and Spurs are tough.
Plus maybe both on pens, not sure if Jesus is.

shite transfers, who would even consider doing that, not even for free. eriksen and kaku could easily outscore Jesus and hazard

Decent idea, only if you have Kane. Don't like getting Hazard if he isn't firing but it might payoff since he is facing Palace

I expect the majority might say it's a bad idea, but I like it. It's definitely playing the fixtures, and also Jesus and Hazard are perhaps more likely to explode and have some massive hauls.

I'm transferring in Hazard this week and, unless anything strange happens, I'd like to keep him until at least GW27. The fixtures are just too good not to have him as a captaincy option to complement Kane. People say wait for him to score first, but he's been eased back in for ages now. I think points are just around the corner, and I'm going with my gut.

Not got balls that big but keeping him instead of transferring to a City mid. Cost me 11 points last week but I'm a sucker for punishment when it comes to a differential.

Was considering it alright. Think him and Baka should start. Be intrigued to see what formation they set up in now.

Probably not very. He took a pain killing injection before the Palace game. 2 weeks rest would be nice ahead of the Liverpool game.
