Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Monday

Joe Allen’s injury is a turning point for Wales and an untimely blow for Stoke City. Elsewhere, a former Fantasy favourite comes to the fore to help Iceland make World Cup history, while Burnley assets continue their fine October form.

Here are the notes from a tense night of decisive World Cup qualifying action.

Allen joins international casualties…

Stoke City’s task of taming Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City attack may well have suffered a major blow following Joe Allen’s withdrawal for Wales last night.

Allen was an integral figure for the Welshmen against the Republic of Ireland prior to his departure – a turning point in the encounter which eventually saw the Irish prevail by a single goal.

Allen was withdrawn on 37 minutes following a head injury and will now be an early doubt for Stoke’s Gameweek 8 encounter.

Owned by just 2.3%, his relevance as a Fantasy asset is minimal. Nonetheless, his potential absence will surely be felt by Mark Hughes’ men, making their task of nulifiying City’s attacking threat all the more difficult.

A good break for Gylfi…

Helping your country to its first ever World Cup finals will have gone quite a large way towards persuading Gylfi Sigurdsson that this season might actually turn his way.

The challenge now is to bring his international form back with him to Merseyside.

The midfielder has endured a woeful start to his career with Everton, scoring a spectacular goal against Hajduk Split in the Europa League and…that’s it.

His goal and assist in a historic 2-0 win over Kosovo last night reminded us all of his talent and built on the signs of a personal revival hinted at in his most recent domestic outing.

Everton lost 1-0 at home to Burnley in Gameweek 7, but there was an improvement in both the team and Sigurdsson – the Icelander led the way with seven chances created and also had three shots on goal.

The Toffees still haven’t been revived following a cruel opening schedule, in which they played both Manchester sides, Spurs and Chelsea over four brutal Gameweeks.

But aside from a Gameweek 9 visit by Arsenal, the fixtures now fall favourably until the Merseyside derby on December 10.

Sigurdsson’s struggles, however, have reduced him to the role of a 3.2%-owned disappointment who has lost close to half of his managers, and 0.3 of value, since the season kick-off.

…and Burnley assets as well

Sigurdsson set up Iceland’s clinching goal last night, scored by Burnley’s Johann Berg Gudmondsson – his second strike of the international break.

The Clarets midfielder remains a fringe Fantasy option, though his Burnley team-mates also maintained positive form.

Jeff Hendrick set up the Republic of Ireland’s winner, from West Brom’s James McClean, that broke Welsh hearts in Cardiff, while team-mate Stephen Ward earned back-to-back clean sheets and an assist over the two matches for Martin O’Neill’s side.

Ward, with 8.1% ownership, is the most popular Burnley player in FPL, and only Spurs’ Ben Davies has enjoyed more transfers-in among defenders than his 106,000+ ahead of Gameweek 8.

Sean Dyche’s side enjoy favourable fixtures through to Gameweek 18, with a trip to Man City and a visit from Arsenal the only two sticking points. Beaten just once all season, confidence in his squad remains high ahead of West Ham’s Gameweek 8 visit.

Elsewhere…

The showdown in Cardiff featured a number of other Premier League players.

For the hosts were Wayne Hennessey, Ashley Williams, Spurs defender Davies and Aaron Ramsey, who all played the full match, while Hal Robson-Kanu was given 71 minutes before being replaced by Sam Vokes, and Liverpool starlet Ben Woodburn was brought on after 65 minutes for Leicester City’s Andy King.

Shane Duffy and Ciaran Clark joined the aforementioned Burnley trio and McClean in playing 90 minutes for the Republic of Ireland, while Bournemouth’s Harry Arter was subbed off after 77 minutes.

A Marko Arnautovic corner set up Austria’s winner in Moldova.

The West Ham midfielder enjoyed a fine international break, also scoring in his country’s 3-2 win over Serbia last week.

Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic provided an assist as the Serbians beat Georgia 1-0 to win Group D ahead of the Irish.

He played 77 minutes before being replaced by Crystal Palace’s Luka Milivojevic. Man United midfielder Nemanja Matic lasted the full 90 and Southampton’s Dusan Tadic played until the 89-minute mark.

Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren overcame back and Achilles problems to turn out for 90 minutes for Croatia in their 2-0 win over Ukraine.

The centre-back is reportedly forced to take painkillers to get through matches and was omitted from Croatia’s previous qualifier against Finland.

He now looks well placed to form his regular central defensive partnership with Joel Matip against Manchester United on Saturday. Jurgen Klopp’s other alternative – Ragnar Klavan – is due in action tonight for Estonia against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Matteo Darmian could well be facing Liverpool in the United backline. He started Italy’s 1-0 win in Albania before being replaced by Chelsea’s Davide Zappacosta after 61 minutes. That could be significant given that Darmian is likely to be in Jose Mourinho’s plans for Saturday’s early kick-off at Anfield.

Regular right-back Antonio Valencia started against Crystal Palace last time out having been billed as a fitness doubt by Mourinho. The Ecuadorian may well be considered a risk by the United manager given that he is returning via a long-haul flight following his clash with Argentina in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini’s international break consisted of an 89th-minute substitute appearance last night.

The Italians finished as runners-up in Group G to Spain, who rang the changes in a 1-0 win in Israel.

Nacho Monreal, César Azpilicueta and Pedro were given their first starts of the October break, with the latter replaced after 76 minutes.

Man United keeper David de Gea was on the bench, while Man City playmaker David Silva missed the match through suspension, surely making his starting role against Stoke City all the more likely.

Finally, Brighton striker Tomer Hemed, currently serving a three-match domestic ban, played the full 90 minutes for Israel.

      Nice, 8/10

Flexible back 5, (Wimmer maybe to feature in 2 games over the next 6 - maybe Holding a better option)

Eeriness MAY struggle in Oct, based on fixtures, Currency have him but leaning towards a Sterling/Silva combo.

Overall good though, front 3 is solid and behind that you have a lot of flexibility - lastly maybe Fabs instead of Pope. Rotates well with Elliot, and better fixtures than Pope over 8 weeks.

    Davies, Kolasinac, Gamez, Maguire, Jones
    Kante, Ramsey, Mkhitaryan, Eriksen, Fernandiho
    Lukakku, Kane, Ayew

Was thinking of swapping Ayew for Vardy.
Is there a good way to do this or think its better going just Lukakku and Kane upfront and maybe boosting def/mid?

International break WC is dangerous, you start to overthink. 🙂

I have a very nicely balanced 4-3-3 WC with good mids and forwards and very decent defs but no premium defender. And today I thought that the reason everybody started to talk about 4-3-3 was premium wing backs and their potential. Maybe playing this formation with 5.0 defs is not the best idea?

I like my team though. Its just IB kicking in.

I was told I was wrong for sharing your opinion BUT I completely agree.

Swans will be on the front foot with posession, Carrol to get forward and on corners/FKs. City will dominate the ball and likely keep a CS.

I do too, Erkisen has been in my team from the start. Whats swaying me is fixtures over Oct BOU/LIV/man vs Sterlings more favourable STO/BUR/wba. He is also taking less corners this season with Davies taking a large chunk of them. TBH id rather go without Lukaku than Eriksen.

How does this look for gw9? Players in marked with an asterix, (Mkhi to Sterling gw8). General thoughts: Have 2 of the top defences covered and a good rotational pair so think I can get away with no City/Chelsea. Pogba will be my Sterling escape route if he loses his spot or form.

2 of the top defences covered, but some tricky fixtures ahead. I think lack of city/chelsea may sting you, but I don't think a terrible set up. 6/10, see me after class for tips.

    2FT - 0,7 in the bank

    Foster, Elliot
    Alonso, Mee, Simpson, Naughton, Tuanzebe
    Antonio, Alli, Eriksen, Salah, RLC
    Kane, Firmino, Abraham

    Upgrade defence or attack?

Any tips what to do with this lot?

    Elliot
Davies - Maguire - Phil Jones
Mkhitaryan - Alli - David Silva - Ramsey
    Lukaku - Kane - Abrahams

Have 1 FT and 0.1 ITB but also got the wildcard so could:

    Foster -> Fabianski
    Mason -> Wimmer
    Mkhitaryan -> Choupo-Moting
    Lukaku -> Jesus
    Abraham -> Vardy

      WC you need out

Mik, Ali, ramsey, Lukaku, (forum will be split on that one), Abrahams

      In

      Sterling/Eriksen, Richarlison, Vardy, Jesus

trippier or aurier ? who is expected to seal that position .
cant expect too much rotation here

Don't think anyone knows. Trippier playing well but Aurier the big money signing. I would expect plenty of rotation between the two

      Davies.Both rotation risk.

Avoid both is my advice, we have no idea who's first choice atm. Aurier may have lost his spot for now due to the red, all we can do is wait and watch.

Agree with this, but Rose soon to return also puts Davies at risk. Its a fickle sport and one bad game could see you riding the pine the following week.

the problem is that im playing a draft auction format .
So i had got trippier, and aurier wasnt picked up yet .
so bought him too into the squad .
so will always have to keep one of them as 1st choice sub

    Foster / elliot
    Alonso / jones / davis / montreal / memba
    Silva / Erik / Mooy / Carroll / chabo
    Firmino / Kane / Kaku

Thinking or doing Firmino + Mooy to Joselu + Silva

    or Joselu + chelsea/city defender

Your defence looks strong enough as it is. Vardy otherwise would've suggested him, I'd do the mooy and Firmino to Sterling (think that's what you meant) and Joselu moves as suggested

will likely do Joselu + Sterling

    Quick couple questions:

    A) Luis and Monreal
    B) Otamendi and Maguire

Also would you prefer Coutinho for their tough next two or just go sterling for two game weeks and bringing coutinho once United Spurs games are done? Sterling would mean triple city attack though?

    1. VFORVANDETA

      B.With Sterling.

Sadly can't as I have Jesus and Silva already so B means Otamendi takes my lady city slot

Hi Guys, thoughts on this current wildcard please?

    GK: Fabianski
    Defence: Ward, Davies, Otamendi, Naughton
    Midfield: Richarilson, Coutinho, Silva
    Forwards: Lukaku, Kane, Jesus

Bench: Elliot, Wimmer, Carroll, Loftus cheek.

    G2G?

Looks fine as long as Ward, Wimmer and Naughton rotate well, if you're doubling up would rather double up on Burnley than Swansea (Pope in goal)

On wc, only slight changes between teams

        Ward - Fernandez - otamendi - Davies
        Eriksen - salah - choupo
        Lukaku - kane - Jesus

Anyone remember the old skool FPL.

I've been playing this game since 2002 and just reminded me of some of the golden moments

    Rules

    https://web.archive.org/web/20030605054704/http://fantasy.premierleague.com:80/rules.html#competitions

The really simple rules. None of this OPTA stats business - you'd get a bonus based on someone watching from the crowd!
Do you remember the vice captain default onto the most expensive player or a penalty converted being less score than an open play? It's amazing how little the basics have changed though.

    The Pundit

    https://web.archive.org/web/20021016200058/http://fantasy.premierleague.com:80/M/pundit.mc

Years before FFS, we had the pundit with his tips on having a Ruud van Nistelrooy, Michael Owen and Thierry Henry frontline.
A highlight being "Wayne Rooney, who at 16 years Campbell's junior became the youngest ever goalscorer in the club's history this week, could be one for the future and is available at a low price if your team is short of funds."

    The Kits

    https://web.archive.org/web/20030512051315/http://fantasy.premierleague.com:80/M/eventhist.mc?id=609149&event=9

You'd pay top dollar for some of these nowadays and check out the green background.

    The Players

    https://web.archive.org/web/20030406142758/http://fantasy.premierleague.com:80/M/elementhist.mc?id=316

Sylvin Wiltord, Tony Hibbert, Massimo Maccarone...legends all of them

But check those Giggs stats! https://web.archive.org/web/20030512055306/http://fantasy.premierleague.com:80/M/elementhist.mc?id=316&showtype=graph&popup=&iframe=

    Thoughts on this team please.
Currently on a WC and the plan is to play 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 depending on Ward/Choupo-Moting's fixtures.

    Forster - Elliot
Luiz - Monreal - Jones - Ward - Brad Smith
    Sterling - Ramsey - Coutinho - Choupo - Obiang
    Kane - Jesus - Vardy

    2FT / 0.3ITB

    Foster (Elliot)

    Cedric Cresswell Naughton Mee (Simpson)

    Alli Salah Mkhi (Cork (RLC))

    Lukaku Kane Firmino

I badly need a City attacker and to upgrade my defence, how's best? I'm thinking of either downgrading Firmino to DCL and Mkhi to Sterling for upgrades into GW9
