The Watchlist Updated – Goalkeepers

With ten days remaining until domestic action resumes, we’ve taken time out to update our Watchlist rankings ahead of a hectic winter period.

For those unfamiliar, the Watchlist rankings offer mid-term player recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks and beyond. They can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

These highlight our current thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

Our analysis gets underway with a look at the main contenders in our latest goalkeeper standings.

Burnley’s Nick Pope moves to the top of our reckoning ahead of four home fixtures (SWA ARS WAT STK) and trips to Bournemouth and Leicester over the next six Gameweeks.

Since replacing the injured Tom Heaton early in Gameweek 4, Pope has served up four clean sheets in seven starts and has conceded more than one goal on a single occasion – away to Man City’s attack in Gameweek 9.

The Clarets’ stopper offers a steady source of points, too. He’s supplied at least one save point in seven of his eight league outings, with an average of 18.3 minutes per save quicker than any goalkeeper.

Also the number one stopper for bonus points, with a total of seven to his name already, Pope’s price of 4.5 looks outstanding value for money right now. Over 24,000 have snapped him up since last weekend, yet he’s still owned by just 2% of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Clarets’ defenders Ben Mee (4.5) and Stephen Ward (4.9) offer attacking alternatives as routes into a rearguard with five clean sheets and just nine goals against – only the two Manchester clubs and Spurs can better them for either statistic.

Despite a premium price tag, David De Gea’s appeal as a fire and forget option between the posts continues to gain momentum.

The Man United number one has registered eight clean sheets in the first 11 Gameweeks – at least three more than any other keeper.

De Gea is also profiting from save points, earning at least one on as many as seven occasions already.

Indeed, he’s producing a save every 30 minutes so far this term – quicker than last season’s average of 40.9 minutes – and has already matched his total of five bonus points from 2016/17.

The top scoring keeper on 65 points, the Spaniard is second only to Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta (67 points) among all defensive options.

He’s also the second most popular player in the FPL game – only team-mate Romelu Lukaku (47.7% to 40.5%) has garnered more owners.

With Phil Jones now up to 5.5, there’s very little to separate him with the De Gea (5.7) in price ahead of four favourable fixtures (NEW BHA wat BOU) in the next six.

United have testing back-to-back encounters with Arsenal and Man City in Gameweek 15-16, though Jose Mourinho’s bus parking exploits against title rivals may well boost De Gea’s points potential.

Julian Speroni is our favoured budget keeper of choice as Newcastle’s Rob Elliot slips a little in our estimations.

Costing a mere 4.0 and sitting in 3% of squads, the veteran has started each of the last four league matches for Crystal Palace, whose upcoming defensive schedule is regarded as the most appealing over the next six Gameweeks in our season ticker.

Roy Hodgson’s men are set run that looks vital to their bid to beat the drop – they boast four strong home fixtures (EVE STK BOU WAT) as well as trips to Brighton and West Brom over this period.

Encouragingly, since moving to a 4-4-2 in Gameweek 8, Palace have allowed a mere three big chances – no side have conceded fewer. That’s all the more impressive when you consider they faced Chelsea and Spurs, restricting both to just a single goal.

Meanwhile, a total of 19 shots conceded in the box during that stretch is ranked third best in the top-flight and suggests they could soon be delivering the clean sheets.

At 4.7, Scott Dann is slightly more expensive but, having scored eight times in the last two seasons, offers a substantial threat in and around the opposition box.

Elliot, meanwhile, has struggled for returns in recent weeks. Still priced at 4.2, he’s mustered just one clean sheet in the last seven Gameweeks and picked up only three save points across that period.

Trips to Man United and Chelsea now arrive in the next four, while the Magpies also host a Watford side that are second only to Man City for away goals (12 to 14) so far.

Second only to De Gea for ownership (26.7%) in goal, the Newcastle stopper still offers three decent fixtures (wba LEI EVE) to profit from over the upcoming six.

Bournemouth are another team who have struggled to keep out their opponents this season, managing just two clean sheets to date.

Yet, like Palace, they have reason for optimism thanks to an eye-catching schedule (HUD swa BUR SOT cry) that is rated as the most appealing for defensive points over the next five Gameweeks.

That brings Asmir Begovic into out thinking.

Priced at 4.5, the Bosnian is second only to Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski for saves (40 to 42) over the opening 11 rounds of fixtures and has earned nine save points as a result.

Indeed, he’s just one point behind the pricier Charlie Daniels (4.8), by 36 to 37, though the left-back could also be in profit over those fixtures thanks to his raids down the flank.

Simon Mignolet earns a place in our update thanks mainly to Liverpool’s excellent home form.

The Reds remain defensively dire on the road – shipping a league-high 16 goals – yet at Anfield, they have conceded just a single goal so far. Only Man United – with no goals against – boast a better record in front of their own supporters.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have already kept out Arsenal and Man United at home and have just one troublesome match (SOT CHE EVE WBA SWA LEI), against Chelsea in Gameweek 13, in their next six Anfield fixtures.

They play four times at home in six, with trips to Stoke and Brighton also on their short-term agenda.

The Belgian has struggled for save points, though, earning just four to date, and, at a price of 4.9, there may be cheaper attacking options such as Alberto Moreno (4.5) in Klopp’s defence.

Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski (4.6) and Brighton’s Mat Ryan (4.5) remain valid options in the budget bracket, with both serving up more points (45 and 41) than any defensive team-mate.

Number one for saves (42) this season, the former has four decent looking match-ups in the next five (bur BOU stk WBA).

Ryan, meanwhile, has four strong home encounters (STK CRY BUR WAT) in the next eight Gameweeks allied with a trip to fellow promoted side, Huddersfield.

Again, though, there are viable options in the Seagull’s defence, with Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy impressing for both goal threat and clearances, blocks and interceptions.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Seen a bit of talk about taking hits.
Just wondering how many hits do people on average take in a season? How many hits is too many? I’ve seen here somewhere that the top players do about 10 per season.

Last season the top 12 teams averaged 8.58 hits. Lowest was 5, highest was 14. This is pretty par for the course in the top 1k most seasons.

Last season I took 7 hits myself.

In my opinion, structural hits are a completely different matter to ones that are chasing price rises and/or last week's points. I'd define a structural hit as one where two (or three) players coming in are for the long-term, especially when a re-structuring of the squad is involved (maybe from 4-3-3 to 3-4-3 for example). That can work because by taking a hit for a player you want anyway you are effectively buying yourself a FT later on. I count those kind of hits as -2 in my mind (although they are clearly -4 in fact).

Reactive hits are the ones to beware of. When the perspective is short-term; especially when you are removing a player you will probably want back before too long. Hits like that should be thought of as -6 because they are actually costing another transfer later.

Personally I would treat all comments about taking lots of hits with big success with considerable suspicion.. Not that anyone is necessarily lying; just that the more common event of taking too many hits and damaging your team as a result doesn't tend to get advertised. People like to talk about their successes more than their failures after all. And even memory can be somewhat selective.

Those are some of my thoughts about it anyway. 🙂

I feel it tends to be a balance - we have to react to events sometimes; injuries, BGWs & DGWs. In last season's top five HoFs Peter gained a much bigger squad value than VR (£108.3m vs £102.5 by the end) and you could argue that in a season in which several expensive assets did well a lack of purchasing power cost VR - perhaps he couldn't afford both Kane and Sanchez? It cost him dear in the final weeks.

Not that players should just be purchased for value/prise rises, although there were moments last season when that happened (knee-jerking in a player who has just done well) Lukaku after his GW24 haul for example.

Although I'm certainly not arguing against good planning, and being brave enough to rely on your bench when you have the odd injury/suspension. I would be better off had I done so this season for sure!

You are over-estimating the importance of TV. It's really not that big of a deal. VR could certainly afford Kane and Sanchez, it was his insistence on having Costa that cost him. He just made bad decisons.

Reacting to events - sure. That happens. But it shouldn't automatically mean hits are necessary. If a manager runs with a non-playing defender, even with a non-playing midfielder as well, then their team lacks robustness in the face of events. And they deserve all the hits that forces them to take.

I can understand your point if you favour cheap rotators in defence but there's nothing wrong with having a non-playing sub. How often in the season do you use your 3rd sub? I like my budget on the pitch. The job of my 3rd sub is to be as cheap as possible and not lose me money. The other 2 i'm happy with a certain 2pts when needed. Sometimes you'll get a 0 pointer but personally I don't feel the threat is bad enough to waste my budget to avoid.

Good point re VR and Costa, he had Eriksen at the time and perhaps felt the Dane could cover Kane's points. Gabbiadini another player who failed on his WC. Bad decisions as you say. Although I guess with VR we will never really know the thinking or limitations behind his moves as he never shares his thoughts.

I think the only time last season everyone took hits was the surprise DGW27 for Man City, which caught most people off-guard. Aguero TC played by a lot that week, which kind of justifies the hit/s.

I am sure if VR had a higher TV by about 4.0 he would have structured his WC team differently or even upgraded Costa. That said, Costa scored 196 points in 35 games and was the eighth highest points scorer so not sure he was a ‘bad choice’ at his price.

A high TV gives you the flexibility to really push on later in the season with a stronger team than others. Just look at how Mark managed his team and second WC with his high TV ... he had a huge advantage over most and his access to more expensive picks helped him rise up the ranks

      I usually take about 6-8 a season. I think that’s a good amount.

Last yr I took about 15 and had my worst ever.

Lots of hits can work - but it’s not a patch on good planning.

No hits so far and my OR has steadily increased, whilst nothing to write home about. This season, I plan to only take hits where the player out won’t play (so a -2 hit sort of). Will see how long that lasts

Setting your team up to require lots of hits cam just be a result of bad planning. For example I took a - 12 in GW 3. Zaha's injury, Fraser injury, Danillo dropped and used Jesus for funds. A top manager wouldn't have had Fraser or Danilo I feel

I should then be set for the next 6 GWs at least and can use FT to monitor rest of my team and potential injuries...

You cant just talk about the People who finished highest and use that. Because People who do it well needs hits less, they got naturally less problems.

Its really team depended and only you know.

-8p, -12p can easily pay off after some weeks and in the other hand -4p can be a disaster.

If they are for the long term they can pay off,
My rule is try not to sell a player for a hit that can punish you that Gw!

Iv took a my 2nd -4 of the season this week to do Kolasinac/Atsu to Richarlison/Daniels as I just had enough funds ..
They both would of been on my bench Gw12 so felt timing was good to take the hit 🙂

Last 3 seasons, I've taken around 150-200 points worth of hits and finished around 20k. This season I tried to be more careful, looking at all the top managers and thinking my 20k ranks could be 1k ranks without all the hitting. It's clearly not worked so far. I've only taken 8 points worth of hits and sitting at 1.7m. I put most of it down to captain Kane for all his blanks but I'm starting to worry now. Even in previous seasons despite taking all those hits I'd be around 500k by now with a huge TV. For the first time ever, my TV is just average and I'm worried that I won't be able to do my usual late surge after the 2nd wildcard around the blanks and doubles later in the season. It's also frustrating watching players like Sane and Richarlison rise almost a whole .5 above their starting price and not being able to squeeze them in. I think I've done it all wrong and if I could go back to the start of the season I'd have took a few more hits and jumped on these bandwagons early, for a hit.

It varies and depends on the season - here's a link to my gw38 review on last season's top 5 http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/05/25/top-5-career-hall-of-fame-gameweek-38-review/ VR took two hits all season, Peter took 25, although he was at pains to mention this was very unusual for him. The average for the top 5 last season was 15 hits.

thanks for sharing that. that article at the end of the year changed my outlook towards hits seeing how well it worked for peter. i used to be very stingy with hits (nowhere near VR) but this year happy to take them if i see a clear benefit to my team. Already taken 6 so far but couldve done with a couple less.

If I remember correctly both Peter and Steve took hits to rectify poor decisions, in the end they started bringing in the right players and it helped them to climb the ranks. So far this season it seems much more difficult to identify the right players, with players sold also performing well as soon as we've sold them. Hopefully it will be become easier to identify when to buy and when to hold a player as the season goes on. I think last season for example VR held onto Benteke for far too long when he perhaps should have taken a hit to move an under-performing asset out of his team. Although Benteke's underlying stats were good. Steve held onto Firmino for too long although his underlying stats were also good. This is Captain Hindsight speaking now!

How many hits I take in an overall season tends to vary from year to year.
Sometimes it's a shit year and points chasing is fun, trying to turn a mare of a season into a respectable one.
Other times, the season is going well and I revert to dullard mode to achieve a better OR.
I kinda prefer a bad start because I can have more fun trying to recover.
Less hits tends to lead to better OR; that's obvious, and I've had a good few seasons doing that but it sucks thw fun out of it for me, even when the competitive edge in my real life personality comes to the fore and demands success.

I've taken 9 so far but I really don't think it matters.

There's a guy in my mini-league who has already taken 33 hits this season. As you might suspect he isn't doing very well but the thing is he does this every year and last season he finished with an OR of 32k and 2 seasons before that his OR was 4k despite taking dozens of hits. He always has a massive TV and over the course of the season this usually pays off in the end.

The aim of the game is to rack up the most pts, not to take the fewest hits. Each season is different. Some years there are a lot of cheap enablers and a poor TV doesn't matter. This season it looks like money is tight so even though I could have not taken some hits to preserve my TV I think it will be worth having done so by GW38.

You can't look at the Top 50 and say "Oh look, these guys have done really well and they haven't taken many hits so that must be the way to play the game" because almost by definition the Top 50 got off to a great start, had a lot of players who were successful and rose in price and therefore didn't need to take hits. It skews the data.

If my team looks 'wrong' I don't mind taking a few hits to put it right, and I've always enjoyed tinkering.

I took 42 hits last season and finished around 122k. I don't know how many I took the year before but ended up in the top 6k. This season I've taken 13 hits and I'm at around 445k. My biggest mistake was re-arranging the team when I thought Aguero was going to be out for several weeks with his injury.

To me it's a gamble if you take hits, but it's also a gamble if you don't.

Hits are like a box of chocolates - you don't need them, but you enjoy them if you pay for them.

-4 shouldn't be seen as a penalty, it's just the going rate for what you are purchasing.

Depends on the hit. I took about 10 last season but the majority were for gameweek like that one where there were 4 games. Others to restructure. Rage hits and sideways moves are a fool's errand and should be avoided.

The boring intl break has really taken a toll on quality of hot topics lol. Hits are completely subjective to your team and is situational. If you removing injured players for hit its not bad, if you bringing a captain for hit its understandable, If you removing a player with strong stats but no returns for just price rise from incoming player then its stupid. Stupid if you targetting 10k finish. Smart if you play in team value league and dont care about rank

There is no right or wrong answer. It depends on the transfers you make.

        Examples:
Took Phil Jones out for a hit for the Palace game when Jose strung us along with tales of Jones being injured. Jones played and got 6 points. Was pretty gutted. His replacement was Monreal got a clean sheet, scored, and topped the BPS. 15 points, 5 points better off after the hit. Jones returned to my team for Bavies a few weeks later.

Took Mhki out for a hit, he got 3 points the following game and hasn't returned since. Replaced him with Sterling who got 15 points. 4 points better off as result.

Took Sterling out for a hit two weeks ago, got 12 points over the next 2 GWs. That would normally go down as a terrible move, but his replacement was Salah who got me 19 points over the same period. Even with the hit I'm 3 points better off, have a better asset and Salah has gone up 0.3 since.

It's a gamble and I'm aware that it isn't a sustainable strategy. I need to reign in on the hits. But a calculated risk with the hits can work and has helped me reach £103.5m with £102.8m in team value with£0.7m ITB.

i take hits to remove injured players or a restructuring - never for value or a 1 week punt (these often end up being double hits to change things back)
This season I've taken 4 hits (3 of which have been part of mini-WCs) to take out Zaha, Pogba,Dummett & Keane for injuries. The other to take out Bavies & T Carroll for restructuring.
The addition of chips has probably led to more late-season hits than was previously.
Taking a hit should be for players that are hopefully going to contribute over a long-term. According to Anewpla - my immediate return on hits is -3 pts but when added up in total is +58pts.
One of the reasons I've still got my WC is Coutinho injury last season derailed a good start to the season as replacements got injured and fixture congestion (rotation) made things messy. Also "haunted" by a particular January GW ages ago (before 2 WCs) of only having 6 players available.

I think its easy to praise the virtues of not taking hits if you are in a position of strength- i.e a good rank with all the players you want in your team there. If you're not in that position I think its perfectly reasonable to try and take a few hits to get where you want to be.

My advice would be not to concentrate on how many you're taking but making sure it's the right move (whether it works out right or not).

I've made 2 hits so far this season. The first was in GW5 to make 3 transfers for -4 to bring in Jesus, Firmino, Davies. I felt that Davies was a winner and that the combo of Jesus+Firmino would work wonders.

It didn't work out but I don't think I was necessarily chasing points.

I then made another in GW10, I made my transfers early then Kane was injured for the United game. I made the gamble that he would be out until after the international break so brought in Aguero, this was a short term move and one I probably shouldn't have made.

As with anything you can get them right, you can get them wrong but I agree with Ruth that long term has to be thought about, short term moves are harder to make work.

The main problem is people go in with the mindset of "this season I'm taking no hits" or "this season I'm taking more" - you should just play every season as it comes.

To give another story alongside Jonty's point about more hits = his worse season. I took 24 hits last year and finished in the top 5k.

If I took less would I have gotten higher? Who knows!

Take hits for points (pardon the pun) where you can rather than to beat the price rises/falls. Only where you see a player who'll markedly improve your points potential over the next 2-3 weeks is it worthwhile. But it's all relative. For example where you've got injuries, enablers or out of form strikers, then it can make sense. But sideways will burn you.

A few seasons back when I finished OR 175, I remember that I made 69 transfers - how many hits is that? 🙂

Just checked my stats last year and I took a total of 17 hits and came 4k overall.

Doesn't always work out, but there's a case for both holding off and being aggressive. It's all about judgement, and the real skill is knowing when to do each.

I've taken 2 so far this season, and happy with my team overall.

No right or wrong amount for me.

Fantasy football is quite simple - there are a pool of players in all positions that are good options because:

        1) They get minutes on the field.
        2) They are good at what they do individually and their team is good at what it does collectively e.g Man City/Spurs/Liverpool attackers, Man United defenders etc. In general of course.
        3) They offer value.

You set your stall out from this pool and hope you have it right from GW1 and it becomes clear from week to week (in general) who to select i.e the pool usually lessens. Your job is to get on and off these players at the optimum times which you can base on form, fixtures, which way the wind is blowing etc.The best - like good poker players - do rise to the top - but it can be achieved in any number of ways. There is no one path....

Too template for me. First of all I don't like the double up of TC and RLC, too weak of a structure because you don't want to play RLC that often and TC is a waste of space. When it comes to the picks I don't think Lukaku is offering good enough value, even with Pogba coming back I would rather prefer a defensive double up. Also, Heaton is expected back in late December I think, so Pope is a transfer waiting to happen and a double up on Burnley is a bit too much for my taste. Also I think Dann will offer better value than Daniels due to goal threat and better fixtures.

Depends what you're looking for in a captain. On current form, Lukaku more likely to get at least 5 points, but think Kane would have a higher ceiling.

Looking at starting GW12 with a WC team of...

      Pope Elliot
      Stones Jones Ward Duffy Yedlin
      ______ Salah Sane RLC Carroll
      Kane Lukaku _______

      A. Hazard + 5.5 (Diouf, Calvert-Lewin)
      B. Hazard + Murray (Yedlin downgrade to Hünemeier)
      C. 5.8 + Morata (Doucouré, Fernandinho, Mooy, amongst others)
      D. 10.2 + Abraham (anyone but Haz + Sanchez)

What do you think of this differential team ( not mine, made it just for fun ). Alder and Pogba when fit
      GK: Ederson, Elliot
DEF: Alderweireld, Christensen, Lowton, Dunk, Francis
MID: Hazard, Mane, Pogba, Zaha, Gray
      FOR: Kane, Rashford, Murray

Go for it, Soton and WBA should leave FPL squads.
I don't like doubling up, even if it's for a defence as solid as ManUtd.

Daniels is good pick because he have attacking potential.
Bournemouth didn't start great so i wouldn't expect lots of clean sheets from them, maybe 2-3 over the next 5-6 games. That's why people go Daniels. If you have the money, go with him.

The thing with 4.5m defenders, is they're in teams that rely on good fixtures to keep clean sheets. So I guess that's where you need to look. Its not like a man united player where you can still play them in trickier games.
for me BOU look to have the best run, but its a slight risk given the history this season

if you're playing Davies, kun and Sane.. all at slight risk of not playing, would you consider mbemba to Duffy/dunk/francis etc?
no other moves needed so you could hold, but would give some security for the xmas schedule rotations too

Mee - Jones - Davies (Cedric, Wilson)
      Salah - Richarlison - Eriksen - D.Silva
      Kane - Abraham - Jesus

Is Azpi worth it? At 6.7, a 4.5 defender (or a rotation of 4.5 defenders) only need to score 2/3 of Azpi's points to be equal value for money. Then that's a huge chunk of money to use elsewhere. Do you think there are enough good enough 4.5 defenders around? As long as BUR keep getting clean sheets, absolutely.

+ Moreno and BHA defense looking useful.
