The Watchlist Updated – Goalkeepers

With ten days remaining until domestic action resumes, we’ve taken time out to update our Watchlist rankings ahead of a hectic winter period.

For those unfamiliar, the Watchlist rankings offer mid-term player recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks and beyond. They can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

These highlight our current thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

Our analysis gets underway with a look at the main contenders in our latest goalkeeper standings.

Burnley’s Nick Pope moves to the top of our reckoning ahead of four home fixtures (SWA ARS WAT STK) and trips to Bournemouth and Leicester over the next six Gameweeks.

Since replacing the injured Tom Heaton early in Gameweek 4, Pope has served up four clean sheets in seven starts and has conceded more than one goal on a single occasion – away to Man City’s attack in Gameweek 9.

The Clarets’ stopper offers a steady source of points, too. He’s supplied at least one save point in seven of his eight league outings, with an average of 18.3 minutes per save quicker than any goalkeeper.

Also the number one stopper for bonus points, with a total of seven to his name already, Pope’s price of 4.5 looks outstanding value for money right now. Over 24,000 have snapped him up since last weekend, yet he’s still owned by just 2% of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Clarets’ defenders Ben Mee (4.5) and Stephen Ward (4.9) offer attacking alternatives as routes into a rearguard with five clean sheets and just nine goals against – only the two Manchester clubs and Spurs can better them for either statistic.

Despite a premium price tag, David De Gea’s appeal as a fire and forget option between the posts continues to gain momentum.

The Man United number one has registered eight clean sheets in the first 11 Gameweeks – at least three more than any other keeper.

De Gea is also profiting from save points, earning at least one on as many as seven occasions already.

Indeed, he’s producing a save every 30 minutes so far this term – quicker than last season’s average of 40.9 minutes – and has already matched his total of five bonus points from 2016/17.

The top scoring keeper on 65 points, the Spaniard is second only to Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta (67 points) among all defensive options.

He’s also the second most popular player in the FPL game – only team-mate Romelu Lukaku (47.7% to 40.5%) has garnered more owners.

With Phil Jones now up to 5.5, there’s very little to separate him with the De Gea (5.7) in price ahead of four favourable fixtures (NEW BHA wat BOU) in the next six.

United have testing back-to-back encounters with Arsenal and Man City in Gameweek 15-16, though Jose Mourinho’s bus parking exploits against title rivals may well boost De Gea’s points potential.

Julian Speroni is our favoured budget keeper of choice as Newcastle’s Rob Elliot slips a little in our estimations.

Costing a mere 4.0 and sitting in 3% of squads, the veteran has started each of the last four league matches for Crystal Palace, whose upcoming defensive schedule is regarded as the most appealing over the next six Gameweeks in our season ticker.

Roy Hodgson’s men are set run that looks vital to their bid to beat the drop – they boast four strong home fixtures (EVE STK BOU WAT) as well as trips to Brighton and West Brom over this period.

Encouragingly, since moving to a 4-4-2 in Gameweek 8, Palace have allowed a mere three big chances – no side have conceded fewer. That’s all the more impressive when you consider they faced Chelsea and Spurs, restricting both to just a single goal.

Meanwhile, a total of 19 shots conceded in the box during that stretch is ranked third best in the top-flight and suggests they could soon be delivering the clean sheets.

At 4.7, Scott Dann is slightly more expensive but, having scored eight times in the last two seasons, offers a substantial threat in and around the opposition box.

Elliot, meanwhile, has struggled for returns in recent weeks. Still priced at 4.2, he’s mustered just one clean sheet in the last seven Gameweeks and picked up only three save points across that period.

Trips to Man United and Chelsea now arrive in the next four, while the Magpies also host a Watford side that are second only to Man City for away goals (12 to 14) so far.

Second only to De Gea for ownership (26.7%) in goal, the Newcastle stopper still offers three decent fixtures (wba LEI EVE) to profit from over the upcoming six.

Bournemouth are another team who have struggled to keep out their opponents this season, managing just two clean sheets to date.

Yet, like Palace, they have reason for optimism thanks to an eye-catching schedule (HUD swa BUR SOT cry) that is rated as the most appealing for defensive points over the next five Gameweeks.

That brings Asmir Begovic into out thinking.

Priced at 4.5, the Bosnian is second only to Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski for saves (40 to 42) over the opening 11 rounds of fixtures and has earned nine save points as a result.

Indeed, he’s just one point behind the pricier Charlie Daniels (4.8), by 36 to 37, though the left-back could also be in profit over those fixtures thanks to his raids down the flank.

Simon Mignolet earns a place in our update thanks mainly to Liverpool’s excellent home form.

The Reds remain defensively dire on the road – shipping a league-high 16 goals – yet at Anfield, they have conceded just a single goal so far. Only Man United – with no goals against – boast a better record in front of their own supporters.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have already kept out Arsenal and Man United at home and have just one troublesome match (SOT CHE EVE WBA SWA LEI), against Chelsea in Gameweek 13, in their next six Anfield fixtures.

They play four times at home in six, with trips to Stoke and Brighton also on their short-term agenda.

The Belgian has struggled for save points, though, earning just four to date, and, at a price of 4.9, there may be cheaper attacking options such as Alberto Moreno (4.5) in Klopp’s defence.

Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski (4.6) and Brighton’s Mat Ryan (4.5) remain valid options in the budget bracket, with both serving up more points (45 and 41) than any defensive team-mate.

Number one for saves (42) this season, the former has four decent looking match-ups in the next five (bur BOU stk WBA).

Ryan, meanwhile, has four strong home encounters (STK CRY BUR WAT) in the next eight Gameweeks allied with a trip to fellow promoted side, Huddersfield.

Again, though, there are viable options in the Seagull’s defence, with Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy impressing for both goal threat and clearances, blocks and interceptions.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Used as an impact sub in 7/11 of the games so far scoring in 3.

That's 3 in 158 minutes of football. I can see him being the boogie man wiping out many important clean sheets this season.
Against that Liv. defence he could be golden.

Super subs are starters, they just start a bit later than the rest of the team and score goals against tired legs.

You probably own one yourself if you have a Citeh midfielder. Martial another name that springs to mind.

🙂 He will be starting against Liverpool but on the whole will sit 2nd on my bench in a 352.

Just wondered if others are considering, as in that price bracket he seems solid. Anyway I'm sure I will be chuckling many more times this season when he kills peeps clean sheets in the last 20 mins.

Although Bournemouth have great fixtures, I'd be a little wary having him as he is yet to polish off his scoring boots.

Not with Jones at a similar price, and DDG being a solid & also similarly priced United defensive option.

I think United are giving up a few too many chances for me to be going with a double-up (especially one with Jones).

Although United are the one team I would be a tad more comfortable doubling up on in defense, doubling up is a strategy I tend to avoid, in general. Just personal preference - not that this is right or wrong to do 🙂

Bailly was out against HUD, so Smalling filled in. He started the last 2 as United played a back 3 against Spurs/Chelsea

Abraham for me. My policy is usually to play the attacker, as there's a bigger potential upside. Burnley have been very solid defensively, and I often find myself trying to 'maximise' my points by forcedly avoiding pitting my strikers against my defenders, but I think Abraham is the man to go for.

I think the advantage this site has in the BGW with the FH chip, is more that pre-planning will allow no BGW players in the squad leading up to the date.. enabling a team that isn't full of junk players the week after the BGW.

Not really just for this site - more-so the chip as a whole.

The BGW could have a low ceiling though. Last year if you captained Lukaku and had king in your squad you had a pretty decent week regardless of the rest of your team. Filling your team with junk using the FH chip could yield barely any benefit. Depends how bad the BGW is this year.

After a few horror weeks, wildcard finally active 🙂 It's pretty generic, but thoughts on my current draft and the question below would be appreciated.

    Pope | Elliot
    Jones | Daniels | Mee | Moreno | Dunk
    Salah | Sterling | Richarlison | Choupo-Moting | RLC
    Kane | Lukaku | Morata

    0 itb.

My question revolves around Sane vs Sterling. I see Sane as the preferred option, but by how much do we prefer him?

    A) Sterling, Daniels, Pope
    B) Sane, Francis, Speroni

Also, wouldn't mind another 4.5 to replace Moreno. I can see rotation issues over Christmas, what with Milner and Robertson both capable of playing there. Would you prefer Fernandez as an alternative?

Nah, leave it that way. Good team. Only reason i don't go front 3 like yours is because then I can't double up on Sane/Sterling having Salah, Groß/Richarlison...

Thanks 🙂 Yea that's another of the setups I've toyed with, downgrading Morata to the cheapo price bracket (Abraham, Murray, DLC etc.), upgrading Choupo-Moting to Sane, and also shifting someone like Moreno to Azpi/Alonso. It's tempting, certainly, but at the moment I'm feeling like just one of the City lottery is probably enough of a headache heading into a surely rotation-heavy Christmas.

The thing with S/S is, you need to have both. And with this setup ( 2 up front ), you have money for strong defence and strong bench so it isn't risky to have them as you have someone good to jump in if needed. Anyway, good luck.

That's a fair point, you wouldn't expect both to get dropped in the same game (though who knows with Pep), and they're both very strong point scorers in their own right. My reservation with that formation to this point has been that that allocation of funds leaves me a bit less flexible, potentially more than 2 moves away from any of the other big hitters up front (Kun, Lukaku if I go without him) and in midfield (Sanchez and Hazard). But you're definitely right, on paper the team looks stronger and more balanced without the 3 up top.

I might have to look into it a bit further. Thanks, and likewise, good luck.

Hit post before finishing! I think having Lukaku and Kane is too damaging to the rest of the team .

If I hadn’t wasted my WC I’d go Kane/Morata up top in a 3-5-2. Could have a midfield of Salah, Mane, Sterling, Sane and Richarlison

That midfield looks incredible! I agree that Lukaku looks very droppable, although I'm a bit worried about selling him as he comes back into good fixtures and Pogba returns, having held him all this time.

Anyway, might have to do a bit more tinkering to see exactly what a Lukaku less team could entail 🙂

Got 2FT, Davies to Mee is my first move but also considering Eriksen to Sane, very tempting but I like Spurs West Brom fixture after Arsenal.

Alternative move is Vardy to Morata but I can see Leicester scoring against City.

Tricky one, either way Morata will be coming in for Vardy after Liverpool match.

      A) Richarlison, but I don't see anything wrong with both.
      B) See above, my own team currently has just Sterling for price reasons, but in a straight shoot out I'd prefer Sane
      C) Nailed. I'd say a Chelse a defender is certainly worth it, though I'm still rather interested in Alonso's massively superior underlying goal threat, especially at just 0.2 difference now.

      1. RIDZ
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

hmm okay, Alonso would be on my watchlist now. But why you pick Daniels in your team? I am thinking on Dann for now with his good fixtures.

        1. Geordienufc1
          • 10 Years
          6 years, 5 months ago

I think Dann is a very decent option, I'd like to try and squeeze him in myself. I've gone with Daniels b/c whilst both have good fixtures, Palace still haven't demonstrated much to suggest that clean sheets are coming. Their performance against Spurs was much improved, true, but not enough to suggest a change in their defensive fortunes. Dann's goal threat is significant, but clean sheets are a defensive player's bread and butter in FPL. 0 clean sheets and 22 goals conceded in 11 games is a bit worrying, even given some of their tough fixtures.

Considering Daniels has a decent goal/assist threat himself, has similarly good fixtures, and is playing in a more cohesive team right now, I'd say he edges it.

          1. RIDZ
            • 7 Years

we have similar team with Salah,Richarlison,Kane,Kaku,Jones,Mee,Dunk,Moreno. but I would play 352 or 442 due to sick of Vardy performance. so, the only defender you would play every week is only Jones right? Is it too risky or not to rotate 1-2 defender every week?

            1. Geordienufc1
              • 10 Years
              6 years, 5 months ago

Yep, if I stick with my current plans then Jones would be the only one I'd definitely play in every fixture. I expect I'd also play Daniels in each of the next 5, providing Bournemouth's performances are decent, and the other 3 I'd rotate according to fixture and form.

How nailed is Speroni? Thinking Foster to Speroni since I already have Mee and don't want to double up on Burnley defenders.

Also a goakeeper transfer not a waste? Elliot is my other goalkeeper.

    1. Geordienufc1
      • 10 Years

Nothing to suggest Speroni is about to lose his place, Palace have looked substantially better in recent weeks. I'd say he's nailed. However, it is worth noting that unlike Pope who is in virtually no danger of getting dropped (b/c of Heaton being injured), Hennessey is still fit and able.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's a wasted transfer, the Foster/Eliot combo looks pretty poor over the next 10 weeks. But I'd be more confident replacing Elliot with Pope, even as part of a double up, as Burnley under Dyche are a far more defensively solid/consistent side than Palace.

Salah and kola for me , for me Kola is just to much fun to own to get rid of him , even though he does play for Arsenal who are not the best defensively , he's one of the few defenders in the league that's capable of a 20pt game , and i'd like to own him if and when he does hit that score 🙂

I started with Kola and got rid of him when he didn't play. Actually I am on WC and thinking to bring him in, but it's hard to ignore Azpi with his fixtures :))
