International Scout Notes – Thursday

Arguably the most imbalanced international break of the season, involving both vital World Cup play-off matches and friendlies of questionable relevance, kicks off with significant wins for Switzerland and Croatia.

But it is events off the pitch that are of more interest as injuries continue to stack up to trouble Fantasy managers.

Here are the first set of notes from the November international break.

The injuries pile up

An almost farcical spate of withdrawals is in danger of tipping England’s friendly with Germany the wrong side of meaningless tonight.

The latest member of Gareth Southgate’s increasingly beleaguered squad to pull out was Stoke City keeper Jack Butland, who broke a finger in training.

The stopper, in 3.2% of FPL teams, will be assessed by his club today ahead of a pair of attractive trips to Brighton and Crystal Palace.

More significantly, the 8.8%-owned Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen will miss Belgium’s friendly with Mexico this evening after picking up an ankle injury.

The centre-half has played every minute of Spurs’ league season so far and is our preferred route into the Spurs defence in light of compatriot Toby Alderweireld’s hamstring injury and coach Mauricio Pochettino’s consistent rotation of wing-backs.

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez was quick to play down the extent of Vertonghen’s problem.

“Jan won’t be in the team tomorrow. He is suffering a little pain in the ankle, but it isn’t serious.”

All eyes will now turn to Belgium’s second friendly of the break, against Japan on Tuesday, for the involvement, or otherwise, of Vertonghen.

Spurs travel to Arsenal for the north London derby on Saturday lunchtime.

Vertonghen’s international team-mate Michy Batshuayi will play no part in either of Belgium’s friendlies, however.

The Chelsea striker has a foot injury and has now returned to his club ahead of next weekend’s away match against West Brom.

Welcome break for Salah…

There are no such concerns for Mohammed Salah, who remains in Merseyside over these two weeks.

The Egyptian is now owned by 39.7% and they’ve been treated to a fine recent run of form in which he’s hit three goals and provided an assist over the last three Gameweeks.

As a result, he’s the most purchased player of Gameweek 12 to date, with more than 134,000 snapping him up.

Salah has been a key component of the Reds attack this season – he’s been involved in all 11 league matches, and a further six Champions League fixtures, thus far.

With Egypt’s friendly in the United Arab Emirates, scheduled for last night, postponed, Salah called to be omitted from their squad for their final World Cup Qualifier with Ghana on Sunday.

Head coach Hector Cuper duly obliged, with Salah left at home for what is a somewhat irrelevant fixture. Egypt have already secured their place at Russia 2018 – courtesy of a Salah penalty.

His owners will now look forward to seeing a well-rested Salah available for next Saturday’s Anfield clash with Southampton, an encounter which follows his season-high 15-point return against West Ham.

Elsewhere…

West Brom trio Jonny Evans, Gareth McAuley and Chris Brunt all started Northern Ireland’s World Cup qualifying play-off first leg with Switzerland.

Southampton midfielder Steven Davis also played for the Ulstermen, whose chances of making it to Russia next year were dealt a major blow by a 1-0 home defeat.

Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka and Stoke midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri played the full 90 minutes for the Swiss, with the latter’s shot leading to the controversial handball decision that settled the tie from the penalty spot.

Should Northern Ireland fail to overturn the deficit, veterans McAuley and Brunt could well retire from international football to boost their Fantasy appeal.

Croatia all but booked their place in next year’s finals with a 4-1 home play-off win over Greece in which Liverpool defender

Dejan Lovren was involved throughout. Everton winger Nikola Vlasic was handed a late run-out for the Croats.

The second legs of both play-off ties take place on Sunday.

Scotland lost a home friendly with the Netherlands 1-0.

Liverpool full-back Andrew Robertson and West Brom midfielder Matt Phillips started for the Scots, while the Dutch fielded a strong Premier League contingent of Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Aké, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Daley Blind and Georginio Wijnaldum.

On-loan Crystal Palace defender Fosu-Mensah played 72 minutes, while Brighton midfielder Davy Propper missed out having picked up a “minor ankle injury”. Dutch manager Dick Advocaat expects Propper to be back in contention for a friendly against Romania in Bucharest on Tuesday.

Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser came on for the Scots after 71 minutes.

The international break actually started with two Wednesday friendlies.

Burnley midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson played the full match as Iceland lost 2-1 at home to the Czech Republic. Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson was an unused sub.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield striker Steve Mounie played 88 minutes for Benin in a 1-1 draw away at Congo.

A rotates nicely over the next 8 weeks (even if some think they’re too expensive to rotate).
B is a good differential duo (with DCL imo) and would be my pick if chasing.

no formation is crazy if you have the right players. Suppose with 1 uptop you need that player to be in form... the problem is choosing from Morata, Kane, Kun, Kaku etc and getting it right. with 2 strikers you increase your chances 2 fold.
Also captaincy is an issue, generally best results from capping a striker, if you have 1 striker, who happens to be in a tough fixture then your captaincy option is affected

Probably Kane and Morata long term for me. Considering Lukaku now and sell before GW14. Morata's next two are wba and liv. Normally you wouldn't expect many goals from those matches but WBA have been bad and you never know with Liverpool. Morata is hitting form it seems. Lukaku and United have been poor lately. Maybe it's more fear factor of not owning than fear of losing out on points. As a United fan it would be more fun watching United with Lukaku in my team though. Could also keep Aguero for his next two and sell for Morata. Difficult.

I'm contemplating Sterling back to Silva after doing the opposite 3 weeks back.

When you make your mind up stick. Silva's been a bit unlucky not to score and could easily match Sane and he's the lynchpin.

no, if Sane keeps playing its a good move. The constant fear is his minutes but he seems to be holding his spot and scoring.

Thoughts on GW12 captaincy candidates' cases:

SALAH: can be explosive, BUT it's happened way too many times for the most transferred in player to blank (I didn't believe in Kane's cursed August and kept him through all his blanks then..), while he plays at Sevilla 3 days later and may be rotated/rested/subbed.

AGUERO: can score well, but even if City can't lose top spot in their group, playing 3 days later may cause reduced minutes.

KANE: even if Tottenham win, I don't expect them to push hard for many goals, so I don't think he's a strong captaincy candidate, playing away at Dortmund 3 days later.

MORATA: he may score, but as with the above, I think Chelsea may sub off early some of their stars, in order to win comfortably at Qarabag in midweek.

SANE: can explode too, but may well be rested/rotated/subbed off early due to Pep and the match 3 days later.

GROSS: seems to find the way to feed assists quite often, is expected to play the full match and Stoke have a weak defence.

RICHARLISON: his form is not good at home matches, but he plays 90 minutes vs WestHam which I don't expect to have suddenly become solid at the back.

So what would you say about captaining Gross or Richarlison?

I would say that Salah is still the best bet.

Kane in a London Derby - often a goal fest.

I would put more faith in Kane than in Richarlison.
More risk in Rich, and of course more the gain.

I tried that in GW 10. Didn't went well.

Going Morata myself, too risky to captain Gross or Richarlison, think Southampton will frustrate Liverpool. Kane a good bet as well

Poch won't care about Dortmund away as Spurs have already qualified and only have to beat Apoel at Wembley to top their group. He may well even rest Kane in that match and play Son up top as Spurs will look to sit back and counter.

Lukakus form and stats are awful. I wouldn't get him in until Pogba is back and they start firing.

Kane, Mortata, Jesus and Aguero are still better picks in my book

People seem to prefer Niasse over DCL. Why is that?

This post from Timbo suggests that neither is nailed and (his opinion) that DCL is ahead in the pecking order.

Think I'd be looking at DCL for my 3rd striker over Niasse. Think he's likely to be getting the starts as I suspect they see him as a long term prospect v Niasse a bit of a stopgap... lots depends on the new manager.

I’m in no panic but I might downgrade further from Tammy if he fails to deliver, so there’s time for things to settle. Just interesting to see that a lot of people opt for Niasse with very little to go on.

Agreed. I think it might be DCL or maybe Wilson I'd be keeping an eye on down there; I personally have Vardy as a fire and forget as I think you need to keep swapping that price of player around to get on the form guys. Though Tammy seems to be returning 1 in every 3 games... kind of what you want tbh

        2. Cityzen Kane
          • 7 Years
          6 years, 5 months ago

I think it will depend on who they are playing , both will get starts at some point.
Personally I went Niasse, just a gut feeling, I like him. Before last weekend DCL did very little in terms of scoring and altho he's fast he can get bullied off the ball. Niasse is a fighter, just look at his goal vs Watford last week... persisted and fought his way in.
I should add I was 0.1m short for Calvert-Lewin, but think if I wasn't I'd still go Niasse. He'll be on my bench either way,so to me it didn't seem a big risk getting him.
But none of us will know which plays unitl a new manger is decided and theres a few games under their belt

Hi all, couple of quick questions on a WC

    1) Best gk combo to get till gw30 or so. Newcastle/Brighton seems to the best rotation (total cost 8.6m). Other option is Ddg + Speroni (9.7m).

    2) Bournemouth and palace have great fixtures till gw17 and thereafter stoke and watford have great fixtures..so thinking having dann/daniels and then switching to wimmer/kiko after that..only issue is i generally dont plan for transfers esp for defenders

    3) There doesnt seem to be too much love for firmino here but he looked really good last game and since pool are a good scoring side, dont mind a double up with salah. Plus in that price bracket..i believe he is the best option. So then would you prefer someone
    3A) Gross + Firmino and play 3-4-3 (mee,dann,jones,moreno,daniels def)
3B) carroll + Morata and play 4-3-3 (bench carroll and play an extra def)

    1. Individual
      • 10 Years
      6 years, 5 months ago

      1) Burnley Newcastle probably makes sense. I'm still in the "I only need 1 GK school" and will be fielding Elliot week in, week out I think, though.

      2) Think that's a decent way of looking at it. Dann/Daniels looks the strongest duo for the current context and then you can think about Wimmer/Kiko later down the line. Could be Dunk instead of Dann I reckon, I don't know if Scott has done enough to convince.

      3) I don't like Firmino. His job clearly seems to be creating space for the more creative/offensive players around him rather than fashioning/getting on the end of chances himself.

      3B of those 2.

Get rid of Hegazi I think, you don't want any stake in the WBA defence. Maybe Dunk at Brighton instead?
Christensen... will he push Luiz out permanently? I'm not sure. If you can make Azpi I would.
I think you need to get rid of Firmino for Tammy to pay for an upgrade to Surman as well.

not on a WC, just a hypothetical situation
would you go without kane for a front 6 of:

    salah, sterling, alli
    morata, kaku, kun

still gives me a defence of jones, mee, moreno, dunk, maguire

kane will likely be top fwd, but these 3 will make up the top 4 and
essentially - will kane and richarlison outscore kaku and sterling?

I don't think I would go with that lightweight a defence, but its a different style of 3 big hitters

Shelford made his Test debut for the All Blacks later that year against France in a 19–7 victory in Toulouse, and then was a notable victim of the infamous "Battle of Nantes" in the second Test. Roughly 20 minutes into the match, he was caught at the bottom of a rather aggressive ruck, and an errant French boot found its way into Shelford's groin, somehow ripping his scrotum and leaving one testicle hanging free. He also lost four teeth in the process. Incredibly, after discovering the injury to his scrotum, he calmly asked the physio to stitch up the tear and returned to the field before a blow to his head left him concussed. He was substituted and watched the remainder of the game from the grandstand where he witnessed the All Blacks lose 16–3. To this day Shelford has no memory of the game
