International Scout Notes – Thursday

Arguably the most imbalanced international break of the season, involving both vital World Cup play-off matches and friendlies of questionable relevance, kicks off with significant wins for Switzerland and Croatia.

But it is events off the pitch that are of more interest as injuries continue to stack up to trouble Fantasy managers.

Here are the first set of notes from the November international break.

The injuries pile up

An almost farcical spate of withdrawals is in danger of tipping England’s friendly with Germany the wrong side of meaningless tonight.

The latest member of Gareth Southgate’s increasingly beleaguered squad to pull out was Stoke City keeper Jack Butland, who broke a finger in training.

The stopper, in 3.2% of FPL teams, will be assessed by his club today ahead of a pair of attractive trips to Brighton and Crystal Palace.

More significantly, the 8.8%-owned Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen will miss Belgium’s friendly with Mexico this evening after picking up an ankle injury.

The centre-half has played every minute of Spurs’ league season so far and is our preferred route into the Spurs defence in light of compatriot Toby Alderweireld’s hamstring injury and coach Mauricio Pochettino’s consistent rotation of wing-backs.

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez was quick to play down the extent of Vertonghen’s problem.

“Jan won’t be in the team tomorrow. He is suffering a little pain in the ankle, but it isn’t serious.”

All eyes will now turn to Belgium’s second friendly of the break, against Japan on Tuesday, for the involvement, or otherwise, of Vertonghen.

Spurs travel to Arsenal for the north London derby on Saturday lunchtime.

Vertonghen’s international team-mate Michy Batshuayi will play no part in either of Belgium’s friendlies, however.

The Chelsea striker has a foot injury and has now returned to his club ahead of next weekend’s away match against West Brom.

Welcome break for Salah…

There are no such concerns for Mohammed Salah, who remains in Merseyside over these two weeks.

The Egyptian is now owned by 39.7% and they’ve been treated to a fine recent run of form in which he’s hit three goals and provided an assist over the last three Gameweeks.

As a result, he’s the most purchased player of Gameweek 12 to date, with more than 134,000 snapping him up.

Salah has been a key component of the Reds attack this season – he’s been involved in all 11 league matches, and a further six Champions League fixtures, thus far.

With Egypt’s friendly in the United Arab Emirates, scheduled for last night, postponed, Salah called to be omitted from their squad for their final World Cup Qualifier with Ghana on Sunday.

Head coach Hector Cuper duly obliged, with Salah left at home for what is a somewhat irrelevant fixture. Egypt have already secured their place at Russia 2018 – courtesy of a Salah penalty.

His owners will now look forward to seeing a well-rested Salah available for next Saturday’s Anfield clash with Southampton, an encounter which follows his season-high 15-point return against West Ham.

Elsewhere…

West Brom trio Jonny Evans, Gareth McAuley and Chris Brunt all started Northern Ireland’s World Cup qualifying play-off first leg with Switzerland.

Southampton midfielder Steven Davis also played for the Ulstermen, whose chances of making it to Russia next year were dealt a major blow by a 1-0 home defeat.

Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka and Stoke midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri played the full 90 minutes for the Swiss, with the latter’s shot leading to the controversial handball decision that settled the tie from the penalty spot.

Should Northern Ireland fail to overturn the deficit, veterans McAuley and Brunt could well retire from international football to boost their Fantasy appeal.

Croatia all but booked their place in next year’s finals with a 4-1 home play-off win over Greece in which Liverpool defender

Dejan Lovren was involved throughout. Everton winger Nikola Vlasic was handed a late run-out for the Croats.

The second legs of both play-off ties take place on Sunday.

Scotland lost a home friendly with the Netherlands 1-0.

Liverpool full-back Andrew Robertson and West Brom midfielder Matt Phillips started for the Scots, while the Dutch fielded a strong Premier League contingent of Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Aké, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Daley Blind and Georginio Wijnaldum.

On-loan Crystal Palace defender Fosu-Mensah played 72 minutes, while Brighton midfielder Davy Propper missed out having picked up a “minor ankle injury”. Dutch manager Dick Advocaat expects Propper to be back in contention for a friendly against Romania in Bucharest on Tuesday.

Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser came on for the Scots after 71 minutes.

The international break actually started with two Wednesday friendlies.

Burnley midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson played the full match as Iceland lost 2-1 at home to the Czech Republic. Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson was an unused sub.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield striker Steve Mounie played 88 minutes for Benin in a 1-1 draw away at Congo.

Sorry for the repost but I just can’t decide between these two options. Would appreciate you advise and reasons for your choice 🙂

    A or B

    A) Big front 3 and less in midfield
    Pope, Elliot
    Alonso, Jones, Dann, Mee, Dunk
    Salah, Sterling, Richarlison, RLC*, Carroll
    Kane, Aguero, MORATA*

    B) Balanced overall
    Pope, Elliot
    Alonso, Jones, Dann, Mee, Dunk
    Salah, Sterling, Richarlison, SANE*, Carroll
    Kane, Aguero, ABRAHAM*

    1. John t penguin
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 5 months ago

      I would go B
you may need to use either Abraham or RLC more than you plan so Abraham stands out.
only slight concern is if you want cash from somewhere then morata would be easier to downgrade than sane to get more cash.

      1. OldBenKenobi
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

Maybe try and keep Abraham and try to get Hazard instead of Sane? I just feel I will need to big team defenders over this period and Alonso is due imo. Everyone is get Azpilicueta but think Alonso is going to go big

    2. Pumpkinhead
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 5 months ago

      A) Morata and RLC

      B) Abraham and Sane

I would want Morata the most but I think B will get more points combined. Assuming Bony doesn't mess with Abrahams mins.

      1. OldBenKenobi
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

Essentially yeah but just wanted to show the full team to help make the decision. For example I’ve already got Sterling and Aguero so maybe Sane is City overkill?

        1. Pumpkinhead
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 5 months ago

Fair play - I feel like this is one of those transfers were B makes sense but as soon as they don't perform one week I'd be itching to get A. Morata would be my must have like I said but you'd basically have to play one of RCL/Carroll every week unless you're going to switch between a 4-3-3 and a 3-4-3 depending on fixtures.

          1. OldBenKenobi
            • 7 Years

Yeah that’s the plan. 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 depending on the fixtures. Currently rotating Abraham for a defender but not too fond of this tactic

Anyone else on here still got Firmino? He's always been a low priority to shift (Kun injury, Kane injury, Coutinho injury, Bavies etc.). If Salah and Mane keep going like they did last week, there will surely be some scraps for Bobby to feed off in the coming weeks?

    1. fedolefan
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 5 months ago

I just got him in GW10. Got 10 points from him in 2 weeks. Have saved up enough cash to go Bobby->Kaku for free. Think I'm doing it though the Southampton fixture tempts me to save and get Kane next week. Kun's my other striker so I have an explosive captain shout anyway.

      1. Going Home
        • 12 Years

See in your scenario I can see the logic. If I could do Firmino - Lukaku for free, I would probably do it. But I currently have Kane, Morata, Firmino and feel pretty good about it. The £3m saved over the Kane/Kun/Morata front three makes a world of difference in midfield

        1. fedolefan
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 5 months ago

Yeah, I mean, whom are you getting for him anyway? I'd keep unless you've identified whom you want. I'll only have a big 2 up top formation if I get Lukaku. Was the big 1.5 this past week with Kun Firm Diouf and the big 0.5 the week before when Kun was rested for a Firm Diouf lineup up top.

That's the quandry - I am not sold on any of the budget forwards and don't want to take that kind of hit to the midfield to turn him into Kun/Kaku. It's frustrating seeing everyone selling, but I think he could well be a season keeper for me unless/until he stops being a regular first choice

Plenty of chances. It only takes one game to shift the balance and Mane back is the dynamic that could fire the phoenix.

I have Alonso since the start and it didn't pay off.
If Alonso and Azpi continue with similar returns, i will regret keeping Alonso even more.

What if i downgrade Alonso(losing Chelsea defence coverage) fr upgrading midfield(eg Choupo to Pogba)?

Joking aside, the issues (in my suggested order of priority, assuming you need to create funds first) are:

      KDB - Sane/Silva/Sterling
      Simpson - Mee
      Mbemba - Dunk/Duffy
      Naughton/Schindler - Jones

This is an all eggs in 2 baskets team which doesn't work well.

You have about 43 million tied up in 4 attackers from 2 teams (city and spurs)

Lets say City have a strong fixture, would you ever captain KDB given you have Kun? Similarly, would you ever captain Alli given you have Kane?

Thats 19.5 tied into 2 uncaptainable attackers. And it all relies too much on few teams for me.

Not to mention your defence is really weak and few of them can chip in with attack returns and your bench is very poor

Basically your problem imo is you haven't balanced the squad well. Half the entire budget is on 4 attackers, 2 of which can't be captained

Hi all - just hoping for comments good or bad against this WC team 🙂

    DDG/Elliot
    Jones/Maguire/Daniels/Ward/Duffy
    Salah/Silva/Pogba/Richarlison/Surman
    Kane/Morata/Abraham

0.2M left in the bank - non stop tinkering - I'm driving myself nuts. Thanks

      Decent looking team.

IMO take out Pogba for now, just leave funds to bring him in. Rambo could be an option 😉
Also would suggest Ward - Mee and then upgrade one of Maguire/Daniels and downgrade the other to 4.5

Maybe go Zaha +1.2m until Pogba gets back & makes his first contribution... Zaha has a couple of double figure room turns coming, I can tell!

    Hi All

Been a while on here. Please RMWCT:

    Kane Abraham Morata

    (Elliot, Mee, Dunk, Carrol)
    0.4 ITB

    Much appreciated!

But yeah, solid 8/10. Maybe RLC over Carroll, or Fellaini (vomits in mouth) if he's fit and Pogba still isn't

DDG Jones looks a smart move in the short term, serious value there... they are returning like two 6.5's rather than 5.0 & 5.5

I think so, at least until Rose gets injured. If Rose injured he's a good pick again

As an owner, it has become painfully clear that he is the first choice LWB in a team where the boss will rotate. That means he will play the big league games (United, Arsenal) and UCL, leaving Danny Rose to fill in for the freebie games (home to Palace). I can't keep him anymore, but he will still pick up returns - that I am sure of

Thinking back on team structure - has anyone gone 4-5-1, with the the "1" a big hitting, perma-captain striker? (Kane or Kaku really)

This probably allows for the remaining 9 outfield players to be the highest value & by permanent captaining Kane or Kaku, you're kind of locked into 500 captain points for the season (assuming they score 250-ish). That gives a nice consistent 6-7 points each week from captain + 9 fairly big hitting outfield players supporting...
