International Scout Notes – Friday

Romelu Lukaku’s scoring drought finally ends as both he and Eden Hazard shine for Belgium, but an injury to Phil Jones threatens to derail the plans of more than 100,000 managers who have already moved for the Manchester United defender before the Gameweek 12 deadline.

Injury issues – good and bad – also surround Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho and West Ham forward Chicharito, while Spurs’ midfielder Son Heung-min continues his fine goalscoring form for both club and country.

Here are the notes from a hectic night of international action.

Belgians back in business

Romelu Lukaku finally snapped his dry spell with a brace for Belgium in their 3-3 friendly thriller against Mexico.

The Man United striker had gone seven matches without a goal in all competitions before last night’s double, prompting consistent Fantasy Premier League sales that had reduced his peak ownership of 3.1 million in Gameweek 7 to 2.5 million going into the break.

Although he is still owned by 47.6% of FPL managers – making him the most popular player in the game – the sales had continued following the Gameweek 11 loss at Chelsea, with a further 71,000+ showing him the door.

That move could be punished, particularly with an immediate schedule involving Newcastle and Brighton at home and a trip to Watford awaiting Lukaku when he returns to Manchester.

Indeed, aside from a two-match blip of Arsenal away and the Manchester derby in Gameweeks 15 and 16, United’s fixtures are set fair from now until the end of January.

His compatriot, Eden Hazard, opened the scoring from a Lukaku rebound against Mexico to continue his own ascent.

The Chelsea midfielder now has four goals and an assist from his last six matches for club and country, although his 10.6 price tag remains a major obstacle when the likes of Mohamed Salah and Manchester City’s midfield are proving powerful and consist sources of returns.

Hazard’s ownership is still a modest 5.1%, and he’s gained just over 1,000 owners since Gameweek 11.

Chelsea’s schedule, however, is very attractive from now until the end of the year, with only a Gameweek 13 trip to Anfield looking like a major test.

Belgium’s XI against Mexico was the usual Premier League-heavy affair, with Thibaut Courtois, Nacer Chadli, Kevin De Bruyne, Lukaku and Hazard all starting.

Mousa Dembélé replaced De Bruyne at half-time, while both Hazard and Lukaku were substituted late on. Simon Mignolet, Kevin Mirallas and Steven Defour watched on from the bench.

West Ham forward Chicharito drew the foul from which Mexico levelled at 1-1 from the penalty spot.

But the striker went off after 51 minutes with a suspected hamstring issue, although Mexico manager Juan Carlos Osorio said post-match that he had no update on the player’s condition.

Chicharito is in 12.7% of FPL squads, and the Hammers have reasonable short-term fixtures to come (wat, LEI, eve) before the schedule turns very ugly indeed (mci, CHE, ARS) for new manager David Moyes.

Jones injury vexes early adopters

If selling Lukaku is starting to look like risky business, the 103,000+ who have made his United team-mate Phil Jones the second most popular buy of Gameweek 12 must be ruing their early trade.

The injury-prone defender limped out of England’s creditable 0-0 draw with Germany after just 25 minutes, although his international coach, Gareth Southgate, was quick to downplay the seriousness of the thigh issue.

“He seems fine, we’ve checked him out. It’s something he’s been carrying but he doesn’t seem to be any worse so that’s fine. We’ll see whether Phil stays with us.”

Injury and Jones have never exactly been strangers, with United manager Jose Mourinho issuing almost weekly bulletins of doom and gloom regarding his centre-half’s fitness, only to start him in every single league match this season.

Time will tell whether Southgate’s rather more upbeat take turns out to be equally misleading.

But the defender’s 15.8% FPL ownership will surely be hoping that Jones is now wrapped in cotton wool as a spectator for Tuesday’s friendly with Brazil – particularly with United’s aforementioned schedule offering excellent prospects of defensive returns.

The goalless draw at Wembley was a bright and breezy affair in which the 5.3%-owned Crystal Palace midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek caught the eye, as did fellow debutant Jordan Pickford, who pulled off some fine saves to keep the Germans at bay.

Cut-price Liverpool defender Joe Gomez (4.6) continued his dream start to the season when he made his debut as the replacement for the stricken Jones, while in-form Man City winger Leroy Sane was a threat throughout for the visitors, hitting the bar with one shot and seeing another effort headed off the line.

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, however, had another outing to forget. The 15.0%-owned forward has scored just once in his last five league matches and failed to convert two excellent chances last night.

The Foxes now face a more testing set of opponents, with visits from both Man City and Spurs over the next three Gameweeks. The schedule compounds Vardy’s recent lack of form, which may have prompted 45,000+ to sell the striker since Gameweek 11 compared to just 14,000 acquisitions – that’s a third drop in ownership over the past four Gameweeks.

Well-owned Swansea City striker Tammy Abraham (17.5%) partnered Vardy in attack and came close to scoring with a deflected effort in an encouraging, if patchy, debut.

Antonio Rüdiger, Ilkay Gündogan, Mesut Ozil and Sane all started for the Germans, with Liverpool midfielder Emre Can coming on after 67 minutes.

Brazilian bench boost for Coutinho?

Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho is still officially recovering from a groin injury, but he was on the bench as Brazil saw off Japan 3-1 in a friendly played in Paris.

Whether the midfielder was ever fit enough to actually play is unclear as he remained an unused sub on the night, as did his club-mate Roberto Firmino.

Tuesday’s England v Brazil friendly will provide us with a clearer picture as to the extent of the midfielder’s recovery ahead of a vastly improved Liverpool schedule.

Doubts over his fitness, plus continued speculation on his future in January, continue to keep Coutinho’s ownership static at 4.5% for now. And with Salah excelling and Sadio Mane fit and back in the equation, Coutinho’s stock among Jurgen Klopp’s attacking options may struggle for a revival.

Mane confirmed his own return to form following injury with an assist for Senegal – his third in a productive week of domestic and international action – in a 2-0 win over South Africa that sealed their qualification for Russia 2017.

Liverpool are now hoping that Mane can return early to Merseyside with Senegal’s final qualifying match, at home to South Africa again on Tuesday, a dead rubber.

Brazil’s other Premier League stars were very much involved in the win over Japan.

Man City striker Gabriel Jesus had a match that mirrored his domestic season to date – starting, scoring and then being subbed off after 58 minutes.

His City team-mates Fernandinho and Danilo played the full 90 minutes, with the latter providing an assist, while Chelsea winger Willian was withdrawn on 71 minutes.

Southampton centre-back Maya Yoshida played the full match for Japan.

Son the stand-out Spur

Spurs’ Heung-min Son continued his rich run of form with both goals in South Korea’s 2-1 friendly win over Colombia.

The midfielder now has four goals in as many matches for club and country, but although he has started the last four league fixtures, concerns over rotation have kept his ownership levels simmering at just 1.6%.

Once a north London derby is done and dusted in Gameweek 12, Spurs have a 12-match run in which only a trip to Man City looks particularly testing.

Should Son be handed a consistent starting place for Spurs, the 7.9-will again offer a powerful differential option. However, the imminent return to fitness of Erik Lamela will add to Mauricio Pochettino’s options in the attacking roles, adding another layer of uncertainty to Son as a Fantasy asset.

A number of his Spurs team-mates were also in action last night.

Davinson Sanchez was on the same pitch as Son, completing the full 90 minutes for Colombia, while wing-backs Ben Davies and Kieran Trippier played over an hour each for Wales and England respectively and Moussa Sissoko was an unused substitute for France.

Elsewhere…

Potential stand-in for Phil Jones, Man United centre-half Victor Lindelöf, played the full 90 minutes in Sweden’s 1-0 World Cup qualifying play-off victory over Italy.

Martin Olsson, who had missed Swansea City’s last two matches with a hamstring injury, was named on the bench for the Swedes. Man United defender Matteo Darmian started and finished the match for the Italians, with Manolo Gabbiadini and Davide Zappacosta among the unused substitutes.

The second leg of the play-off takes place on Monday night.

Two other World Cup qualifying play-offs, involving Honduras v Australia and New Zealand v Peru, finished goalless.

Mat Ryan and Aaron Mooy both featured for the Aussies, while Winston Reid played the full match for New Zealand with Burnley striker Chris Wood limited to a cameo in the last 15 minutes following a recent return from injury.

The second legs of both ties take place early on Wednesday morning, with the 1.4% of FPL managers who own Wood facing up to a double-edged sword – if their man plays, then his fitness will have been confirmed ahead of the Gameweek 12 visit from Swansea. But his horrendous travel schedule – to New Zealand and then Peru – suggests that he may well be benched for the Swans’ visit.

Liverpool star Mane was not the only Premier League player to enjoy a night to remember for Senegal.

West Ham striker Diafra Sakho opened the scoring – a potentially timely goal in light of Chicharito’s possible plight – and Cheikhou Kouyaté and Idrissa Gueye also started for the victorious Senegalese.

Fellow World Cup qualifiers from Africa, Nigeria, played out a 1-1 draw in Algeria.

Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho started for the visitors, with Ahmed Musa on the bench.

His Leicester City team-mates Islam Slimani put in a full shift for the hosts, while Riyad Mahrez was subbed on 64 minutes in what appeared to be a tactical move.

Olivier Giroud was on target for the French in their 2-0 win over Wales.

The Arsenal striker played 73 minutes before being replaced by club-mate Alexandre Lacazette. Post-match Giroud has revealed that he’s currently struggling with a muscular injury, which could well see him miss Tuesday’s encounter with Germany. Reports also suggest that Giroud will therefore be an early doubt for the north London derby on Saturday.

Elsewhere for France, Laurent Koscielny was given the full 90 minutes, while Man United midfielder Anthony Martial came on at the same time as Lacazette.

As well as Ben Davies, Wayne Hennessey, Ashley Williams, Joe Allen, Aaron Ramsey, Sam Vokes and Andy King started for Wales, with the latter pair replaced on 83 and 64 minutes respectively.

Liverpool starlet Ben Woodburn came for Davies after 63 minutes.

Man United’s Nemanja Matic was rested for Serbia’s friendly against China, with the midfielder omitted from the travelling party to the Far East.

Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scored and played 85 minutes, Southampton’s Dusan Tadic was on the pitch thoughout and provided an assist and Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic remained on the bench.

West Brom midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak played the full 90 minutes in Poland’s goalless draw at home to Uruguay, while Man City’s Bernardo Silva was given 56 minutes for Portugal in their 3-0 win over Saudi Arabia.

Why does he need to hold when he can get him back in 3 games?

3 games is a long time in fantasy and progress can be made in that period.

I guess people play differently. I'd try not to use a transfer knowing I'd revert it in 2 weeks. Mainly because it rarely works out, and often injuries to your team occur which might prohibit the reverse transfer.
I think morata is a better pick either way, but only my opinion

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Eye test versus Fantasy football points

Loftus Cheek certainly passed the eye test last night, excelling with his work rate and passing.

But if FPL scoring applied he's have still only received 3 pts while team mates in defence won a clean sheet.

It may well be that he can convert such performances into actual returns also I'm just using him as an example here of a player that looks good but as yet has not delivered stong fantasy returns.

What other players are there that have impressed on the eye but proved to be poor Fantasy prospects?

Also what player are there that have impressive underlying statistics but the eye test has saved the day by unmasking them as awful?

What can we do as Fantasy managers to ensure that we use the 'eye-test' effectively in spotting genuine Fantasy prospects?

Modric is perhaps the best example of this - impressed most games- was the best player by far on many occasions, but we'd be lucky to get an assist out of him.

I think where fantasy pedigree is not involved, I'll take cold, hard points over underlying stats.
I don't want to end up making a Tadic pick.

I think RLC a viable 4th mid Jonty. Fixtures couldnt be any better

EVE STK bha wba BOU WAT lei swa

Even if he gets returns in 4 out of those 8 matches it would be considered a success given his bargain 4.5 price tag

Not to forget he's playing behind the striker in an attacking position unlike other 4.5 cheapies

And when Benteke comes back? Still number 10 then? Or if Chelsea recall him?

But they are separate issues - currently for 4.5 he's great. He is playing and may get the odd assist.

But he's just an example. Is the eye test clouding out judgement. RLC looks a great fifth mid...but if he's a fourth mid to play every week then he needs to deliver fantasy returns, rather than simply look good on the pitch.

yh probably great 5th mid. but an ok 4th mid. we really cant predict when rlc returns.

so having him for this specific 8 matches period we cant miss out on the value he offers.

and having him as 4th mid can allow you to have 6 big hitters upfront.. can see lots of benched points for rlc owners

I'm not sure I'd play him as a fourth every week just yet, but in rotation with a third striker with fixtures he can work well I believe.

From what I've seen, his end product failings to this point are mainly down to team-mates. He's set up big chances and they've been missed. He can finish, we've seen it in season's past in brief appearances for Chelsea (I recall a smart finish at Villa), but he's not taking on the responsibility right now - he needs to be more arrogant and realise he's probably the best finisher Palace have got while Benteke is on the blink.

I think both RLC and Zaha will be entirely different prospects with Benteke back and in one of his 8-match unplayable spells. Might not happen, but Palace will be in real trouble if it doesn't.

RLC can be a fourth if Hodgson can get the best from him. TBH his job might depend on getting that right and getting Benteke scoring.

Tbh before yesterday's game vs Germany, I expected RLC to drop to the bench as soon as Benteke is back - is Hogdson really gonna bench Cabaye or Milivojevic for him? Or Benteke? In other words - Benteke is back, who drops to the bench?...

IF we're sure RLC starts every game, I'm happy for him to be my 4th mid during the aforementioned good run of fixtures.
If he only starts half of those games, then no, he is ath best a 5th mid who we could rotate with a cheapo third striker depending on fixtures.

Spot on I think though Mark - RLC has done enough in the games he has played to deserve more FPL points than he actually got, but at the same time there is a small frustration around him as we know he would do much better if he actually tried to score himself, be more arrogant and try to make things happen on his own. Hope it will come - yesterday's game will help his confidence I hope.

As for the HT subject - eye test is not everything; best proof of that is Kante; amazing player but I won't ever consider him for my FPL team

I think actually seeing a player passing the eye test deliver should be repaired before bringing said player in.
I'd rather be 2 weeks late to a players' point than 5 weeks early.

Agreed, and will be interesting to see where he stands in another dozen games time. Once you factor in transfer hokey cokey as yet other midfielders fall foul to rotation or whatever, you can probably shave 4-8 points off other city players, but not KdB. He's barely overpriced. A touch, but not a great deal

Eye test for me. Case in point:

Joselu. If I just looked at his stats I would just assume he is unlucky and will score big soon. Having watched him play on TV I realise he is actually a rubbish PL player.

Of the cheap players who have passed the eye test for me are Richarlison, Gross and Damarai Gray. Gray needs more game time though.

The only way Brighton will score is through his creativity either his assists or assisting the assister. If I were playing Brighton I would man mark him and then you could probably score a hatful against them.

Always thought Willian was a good player but poor FPL returns.

I got DCL at the start of the year based on what I had seen of him. Sat on the bench for his first 2 assists though unfortunately and Everton have gone to pot since. Still think he can be a good cheap 3rd striker option.

Mkhi was the opposite for a while there. Looked fairly poor, but got good points.

But isn't the "eye-test" looking at their likely FPL returns, rather than how good they are at football? I don't really care about their work-rate or passing ability when on the half-way line.

That's the point in a nutshell.

We should be looking at fantasy potential rather than whether they look good.

Yet Modric was highly owned and people are considering RLC as a fourth mid.

As you say the eye test should still focus on fantasy potential if we are looking for fantasy assets.

I think the case for RLC is that he is 4.5m and looking good... basically an enabler that passes the eye test, which gives us "hope" of returns, even though it may never come to much.
This game is all about hope (that's why I have Alonso) 😉

Maguire passed the eye test for me last night. Thought his movement with the ball was excellent and was so close to an assist himself- not bad for a centre back.

Crucially though he is also delivering fantasy returns - 3 CS, 3 assists, 1 goal, 4 bonus.

Odd though that RLC gets all the interest from Fantasy managers, yet Maguire largely unrecognised despite being a far superior fantasy asset.

True, Maguire is a very good player and a fantasy asset with good offensive potential. But Leicester concede too many goals. I have RLC and had Maguire, but decided to sell him to get Jones. CS > offensive potential returns for me.

You spoke of 'We should be looking at fantasy potential rather than whether they look good.' I don't think you've watched RLC as much as Mark (and other owners). Even during Palace dry spell almost all the chances created came from him. He is a strong big lad who does get forward quite a bit. With corners he headed the ball back to the likes of Tomkins and Dann who didn't finish those big chances. He is underperforming atm, just like Joselu. However, he didn't mess the chances up but his teammates did. Now Palace look better and if they start putting in those big chances, RLC will get the points he should. I agree that Maguire has gone under the rader (he has been in my team pre-WC), but he hasn't been underperforming. They might get some more CS with Claude Puel but about his attacking output we can't complain.

I think I've watched him and his team mates as much as you clearly. We are making the same point 🙂

RLC looks good but he plays in a team that can't convert chances - therefore while RLC passes the eye test he can't convert that into fantasy returns unless his team mates improve.

That's the point about the eye test. He impresses but he can't deliver fantasy returns yet....maybe he will but in order for that to happen his entire team needs to improve.

I agree that the eye-test should include who the player is playing with and who he is playing against, not just the player himself.

Pickford looked great playing for England yesterday, but will not get enough fantasy points when handicapped by having to play behind a weak Everton defence.

Some wide players provide plenty of great crosses, which are then wasted by their team-mates who are incapable of putting the ball in the net.
Others generate fewer big chances but get more assists because they are playing with better goal-scorers.

Having superior conversion rates is one of the main things that distinguishes elite teams (the big six) from the rest.

Maguire is not a ‘far superior fantasy asset’. 4.5 mid playing number 10 in any team should be first name in any serious FPL squad, the points will come

          Maguire 4.3 pts per match

          RLC 2.3 points per match

V correct to say the former ‘is’ a better fantasy asset.

Will rlc be better? Maybe. But that’s a different point.

But currently he is half the fantasy asset Maguire is.

I agree with Jarvish's point I don't think anyone on here is going to use the eye test in the way that you are suggesting . I mean people are going to pick out options via the stats and then watch them play not watch them play and completely ignore the stats . If anything people are far more inclined to look at the points and ignore the stats and not bother to watch the full game. I mean look at Capoue he had an amazing run of points and if you watched Match of the Day and saw his single shot then you could easily come to the conclusion it was sustainable . Fernandinho is on a similar run at the minute .

This season we had Richarlison, Gross and Choupo all getting highlighted via early points ... so they were are worth giving eye-test time to

Thought it was obvious that Richarlison was going to be good and Gross's crossing ability stood out .... I've had them ever since, the most stable 2 players in my team. Choupo didn't pass the eye test

Eye test is more important than numbers imo ( been playing 10 years) , I tend to think most people get carried away with them it works both ways though. Tadic / joselu /Tekkers etc are walking talking reasons why stats are not everything as if you watched them you wouldn't go near them where RLC/ Modric is the opposite .

let's all change the record about RLC, put him as your 5th mid, and move on

to answer your question, Hazard right now

looks unplayable and back to his best, but hardly rolling in points given his price tag

Firmino is another. He's a brilliant false 9 but half his job is literally pulling people out of position to create space for Salah and Mane to run into. It's a marvellous skill, but utterly useless from a fantasy perspective.

Also a special mention for Robbie Brady. How the poor lad doesn't have more assists is just mystifying.

Firmino is the one I immediately thought of from Jonty's post. He gets a lot of slack on here but the team falls apart without him. Pool's performance at Newcastle really highlighted it.

Yet, as Hindu points out, his value to his side doesn't result in commensurate fantasy points.

Biggest example of the difference for me is Daniels. I watched their game against Brighton, and was incredibly excited by how he played, but he only got 2 points and since then he’s had 3 blanks and 3 6-pointers - but significantly, only one attacking return.

So you’re looking for potential, sure, and positioning, but it doesn’t guarantee anything.

Not my typical Saturday morning post but int break is taking its toll so here goes.

What team would you pick if you were putting out a real team of FPL players? i.e. what's the best 11 (and 4 subs) you could pick, within the c.100mil budget and FPL rules if you were a manager going to play a CL final in the morning?

    Mine something like this.

    DDG
    Walker, Jones, VVD, Davies
    Sane, Kante, KDB, Pogba*, Salah
    Kane

    (Speroni, DCL, Dunk, Nyog)

    4-1-2-3 or 4-3-2-1 type formation. 3 city, 3 united, 2 Spurs, 1 Pool, 1 Chelsea, 1 Soton.

Basically what's the best team you could pick to play a real match.

Most FPL teams would have no balance in a real match cos they consist of 3 WBs, 4 attacking mids/wingers and 3 strikers.

Higher chance of starting than sterling ?

First 11 GWs took place over 86 days. Next 11 GWs will take place over the course of only 46 days

Look at the number of starts Sane has had over Sterling, that's all I'm saying. It's true to say rotation will be heavy over the next 11 weeks, but I'm using historical data to go with my judgment.

Maybe I should have said, is that I think Sane has a higher chance of starting.

Sane only has 11 more points than Sterling.
Sterling sees more of the goal. While Sane is the better player in real life, Sterling will get more chances to score (Given the minutes).

Aye, I can't really argue that Sane has looked more like the likely starter than Sterling, though for me that makes Sterling's current points even more impressive.

And we never know how Pep is going to manage their game time in the future. He can't be trusted.

I think the starts have come due to formation change (mainly due to Mendy's injury) . While Mendy was on the left Sane had reduced time , with Aguero and jesus playing together and Sterling there too.
Since mendy has gone, its sane with 2 from Aguero, jesus, BSilva and sterling. He has far less options on the left, Sane seems safe for now

Imo, it doesn't matter because they're both worth their prices for their outputs. You cannot expect every player to cost the same.

If you're doubling up, they're both worth it. If you wanna choose one over the other, choose whoever you think is more nailed now. Sane has started more games recently so he does have a case.

I bought Sane at 8.2m and Sterling at 7.9m so it's not a decision I have to make as both represent great value at those price points.

For those who are looking to bring either in it really depends on the rest of their team. In a vacuum i'd choose Sane but 0.7m can go a long way in some teams.

Yes, and I have actually used 1 of my 2 FT to trade Sterling to Sane. Reasons:

      - Sane seems to be starting more often than Sterling
      - Sane has more double-digit games
      - Sane brings a very unique dimension to the Man City attack, a strong and accurate left-footed shot and cross. Sterling only matches Sane for speed. I think that Sane will continue to get more playing time because of this unique and important dimension to his game.

really don't believe they are. I don't want to accuse any players of being unpatriotic but I'd imagine being fit to play for your club (who pay you very well) is far more important than playing a meaningless friendly for country.
In Jones case, he's so injury prone, I'd imagine it is a good idea to try get out of playing.
Ive no doubt if England were playing a tough Qualifier for WC both those guys would be on the pitch this week

    David Silva?

Is it really worth having him given how far forward Sterling,Sane & DeBruyne are playing: limiting Silva to the odd assist

    after 11 games
    Silva 61 points
    Fernandinho 47 points

3 million difference-and as a Silva owner am tempted to do a sideways to Fernandinho and use the 3 million elsewhere

    Yay or Nay

Past returns are no guarantee of future returns, Silva's returns seem to have slowed down plus Sane must be up there in terms of assists but he also has 6 goals so would much prefer him to Silva

Can Fernandinho continue to get attacking returns though? I’d say Silva’s points are sustainable. Fernandinho is better in the sky game where he gets passing bonus.

Probably not the week to do it after two goals and an assist last night, confidence will be high, hes also decent away from home.

For me, it's Silva V Erisken V Coutinho for that role in my side, all similar in the sense of assisting being a big part of their game.

Silva does get forward a fair bit though, not sure why that is a concern.

For England, yeah. 1 game for England doesn't mean he will be a good option for Palace though, but yeah he's only 4.5. Not the biggest risk in the world.

        Agreed.
On the national team he's surrounded by a totally different group of players. But the point is he's 4.5m. Best option by far in the price range
