Captain Poll – Gameweek 12

With domestic action resuming this Saturday, we have launched our latest Captain Poll to canvass your views on the best armband options for Gameweek 12.

Following a tough run of fixtures for Manchester United, a home encounter with Newcastle United looks an ideal opportunity for Romelu Lukaku (11.5) to reach the summit for the first time since Gameweek 7. So far, he’s the leading candidate and has earned over 29% of the votes cast.

Despite failing to find the net in his last seven club matches, a brace for Belgium in their 3-3 friendly with Mexico last Friday bodes well for an upturn in fortunes.

The number one forward for sales (76,000+) for a second Gameweek running in Fantasy Premier League, Lukaku has an impressive home record, supplying four goals and two assists in five Old Trafford league matches.

In addition, the Newcastle backline has proved frail on the road, conceding in all but one of their five away days, while captain Jamaal Lascelles may well be an absentee through injury.

A visit to Leicester City means that Manchester City’s wealth of attacking options are among the Belgian’s main rivals for the armband.

However, rotation fears, particularly after a busy international break for many of their key players, may reduce confidence.

Sergio Aguero (11.8) may well lead the charge in our poll. He is the top scoring FPL forward with eight goals and three assists to his name.

However, it’s worth noting that the Argentine may be one of City’s weariest travellers over the break. After two friendly matches in Russia, including a clash against Nigeria tomorrow, Pep Guardiola may decide to ration Aguero’s minutes with one eye on the Champions League match against Feyenoord the following Tuesday.

Gabriel Jesus (10.5), who has started every away match in the league, could be another strong contender. As will FPL’s top scoring player, Leroy Sane (8.9), who has six goals and five assists this term. Over the international break more than 101,000 managers have brought in the German winger, who has four sets of double-digits in the last six.

With Raheem Sterling (8.2) a minor injury doubt, some may instead opt for the security of starts that midfield pair David Silva (8.5) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.1) can offer. Silva has caught the eye over the recent break, bagging a brace in Spain’s win over against Costa Rica.

However, it’s worth remembering that Leicester City won the corresponding fixture 4-2 last season, with Jamie Vardy (8.6) netting a hat-trick.

With Nicolas Otamendi sidelined through suspension in Guardiola’s backline, Vardy and Riyad Mahrez (8.4) could be set to profit. Certainly, the latter is the Foxes’ form player ahead of Saturday afternoon’s encounter, serving up attacking returns in each of his last four league matches.

Harry Kane (12.8) disappointed his 607,000 new owners and the 1.4m FPL managers who captained him with a blank against Crystal Palace last time out. It was the fifth time in six appearances at Spurs’ temporary home that Kane has failed to provide attacking returns. However, his record on the road and in London derbies is stacked in his favour ahead of trip to Arsenal.

Kane has netted twice in each of his last three away outings and has a fine record against the Gunners, scoring in all five league fixtures.

Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata (10.3) is the hottest FPL property up front ahead of a trip to a West Brom side that’s managed just one clean sheet in nine Gameweeks.

After netting his seventh of the season against Man United, the summer signing was also on the scoresheet in Spain’s win over Costa Rica – he’s earned 91,000+ transfers in this Gameweek, more than any forward.

Morata has returned 28 points in his last three away appearances ahead of his visit to The Hawthorns.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (9.4) is another strong candidate this time around, with seven goals and three assists, ahead of Southampton’s trip to Anfield. Since his brace against West Ham in Gameweek 11, the Egyptian has been the top target in the transfer market with 149,000+ more owners.

Rested from international duties over the break, Salah looks a very enticing prospect if he continues in a new central role for the Reds – indeed, he’s joint-second with Kane in the Poll, with over 19% backing.

Among the differential options is Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha (6.8), who hosts an Everton side that has shipped ten goals on the road. Since his return from injury, the Ivorian international has scored in both his home appearances.

Brighton’s Glenn Murray (5.8) is an intriguing alternative ahead of Stoke’s visit to the Amex. The veteran striker has scored four in his last three, while the visitors have conceded 11 on their travels.

And the Seagulls’ playmaker Pascal Gross (5.9) should also be considered, given that he has averaged 7.2 points per match in front of his own supporters.

Finally, Watford’s Richarlison (6.4) hosts West Ham in David Moyes’ first match in charge on Sunday.

Granted, all four of his goals have arrived in away matches, but the young Brazilian has still picked up points against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal at Vicarage Road.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 12 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

In a double gw, which of the 2 chips would you play first, triple cap or bench boost? Does it depend entirely on the fixtures?

Running the rule over Vertonghen, but I'm beginning to doubt whether he's worth 6m given his lack of attacking returns. His fixtures are great though!

Is he on anyone else's radar?

Ota is a better option given his attacking threat. If you can stretch to Azpi or Alonso (i think he is due) then better.

Is it reasonable to assume that Mané will be fine at the weekend? I have a tough time thinking it was anything more than an agreement between Senagal and Liverpool for him to return. Perhaps a niggle, but nothing to keep him out of the gameweek.

People have forgotten the first rule of Bringing in a defender - to get cs points

I have seen many people saying Daniels and dann are good option. When asked why, the reason given is they won't keep Cs but will return some attacking points .

Do you think these "attacking points" will be returned every week?

If the choice is between say azpi and luiz/Cahill then yeah you can pick azpi . But when you choose Daniels / dann just for attacking returns, you are forgetting the first rule of Bringing in. Defender

The same place which we followed that never bench fit aguero in the past .

If you are not bringing in a DEFENDER for Cs, then my friend that in my opinion is a bad move.

I think you are right. Daniels with those fix and price is a good pick. Just get a proper 4th defender if things go south.

Daniels has proven great value in past years and had something like 5-6 assists last year, Bournemouth set to turn things around with this block of fixtures. I think he's a good pick, not great.

You look at those two and compare them to others in their price range and they look like good picks, as most already have the likes of Mee, etc.

      1. The Overthinker
        • 7 Years

I completely agree with Daniels being one of the proven player. Also Bournemouth have improved at the back, so they might even keep 1/2 cs

My point was not about a particular player, but about picking a defender just for his attacking points is a no no for me.
Honestly speaking Attacking points should be a bonus for defender

Agreed, because when you pick a player for his attacking potential and things just don't seem to be falling for him he turns into a binary back. 1010101010110100

      Dann is an awful pick.

Daniels is a proven FPL legend. Bournemouth have tightened up, conceding 4 in the past 6 despite very tough opposition. He is ver y attacking. I can certainly understand going for Ake over him, due to BAPs (BOU won't score that many) however.

That's what I am talking about, bringing in a defender for potential Cs points should be the primary reason .

And yes I agree that I see atleast 3 Cs in there for Daniels

        1. bench boost for every gamew…
          • 7 Years
          6 years, 4 months ago

Kind of agree, you are bringing them in for cs primarily. But it also depends a little on how you pick your team regarding structure. I for one picked 5 playing defenders primarily for their nailedness and cs, but if one emply another strategy of more expensive defenders attacking returns is or should be taken into equation imo.

I tend to pick my defenders based on several premises, the teams they play for are predictable in terms of cs and are fairly decent defending, nailedness, bargains in top teams emerging ofc if it emerge, and a little chance of geting attacking returns as well but that is a bonus. But i can see the logic in bringing in players that are also bode well for attacking returns, but as i make up my mind based on several premises Daniels seldom gets into my team because he and his team is so unpredictable. His price is now fair, but i rather have someone like Dunk or even Moreno as they are easier to rotate in terms predictability. I all likelyhood, Moreno wil keep more cs than Daniels and they are at home while Daniels scored vs City when nobody had him....

I agree to an extent about not buying defenders purely for their attacking threat but the bigger point here is the myth that more expensive players are better. Inital price is based on LAST SEASON, a lot can change.

Not bad but too much spent on forwards to the detriment of midfield and defence. Knock 4.5m+ off forwards by downgrading Morata or Lukaku to a 6m or less striker, Murray, Abraham, Calvert Lewin. Moreno to a 3.9m defender. Gross to Zaha or a big hitter mid. Dunk to a Spurs / Chelsea defender.

Has anyone else had a hard time accepting that some players are good picks this year?

For me it's been Otamendi (I went Mendy) and Salah (I went Coutinho). In reality the injuries were just unlucky, but I should have been a dullard and brought the two formers in when the other got injured.

As much as i would have preferred to see Italy in the WC but after you eliminated us i was like they deserve the win over Italy 😀

I see. Azpi and Jones are better long term. You might have to sell Ota then.
          Don't you wanna upgrade Mbemba?

Burnley has proven them this season that the can keep those CS home and away

Bournemouth hasn't done that and if you go Bournemouth it should be Daniels, if you can afford

b.Bournemouth have big chances to keep clean sheet in gw 12 and 14 and few against Swansea and Southampton and CPalace.Burnley may keep a clean sheet against Swansea but i think they will concede in all 3 next gameweeks(ARS,Bou,LEI).

Similar decision to make.. shame that Daniels is just out of reach for both of us.

For me it's between Francis, Duffy and Dann (4.7).

yes Daniels was my 1st choice but 0.1 out.

I was looking at Duffy or Francis. Haven't considered Dann. Fixtures are comparable to Francis for sure.
        Slight Form Favours Francis/Duffy.

Have I missed something or has Abraham fallen out of favour?

May switch to two attackers up front then...(I.e. Kane and Kun) and bench the boy.

An extra Mid in place of Abraham would either be Shaqiri (bha) or RLC (EVE)...

    Salah - Sterling - Richarlison - RLC
    Kane - Jesus - Vardy

    Elliot - Choupo-Moting - Otamendi - Mbemba

    1 FT

I don't like A, what do you expect with your defender? no one would give any assist or goal

B almost similar with my main team, but I prefer Kaku to Aguero and Kaku would be swapped to Morata on week 14.

    Pope
    Davies Luiz Cedric Walker
    Richarlison Eriksen Sanchez
    Jesus Morata Abraham

    Elliot Mbemba Carroll Stephens

    1 FT 0.9 ITB

any suggest what to do with this team?
Thinking on switch Davies/Cedric but don't know who is the best replacement.
Or maybe just save FT to downgrade Sanchez and upgrade Abraham
