Scout Notes – Lukaku Finds Scoring Touch

Manchester United’s frontmen both find the net ahead of a weekend derby match at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Chelsea have to rely on an own goal for a share of the spoils with Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge.

It says everything about Romelu Lukaku’s recent fall from grace that, ahead of this Sunday’s Manchester derby, he is second only to suspended team-mate Paul Pogba for transfers out in Fantasy Premier League (116,000 to 190,000)

The Belgian forward’s ownership has been on the slide since Gameweek 8, losing more than a million managers during an eight-match slump in which he’s managed just one goal.

As a result, his equaliser in United’s 2-1 win over CSKA Moscow last night could not have been more timely.

Partnered by Marcus Rashford as Jose Mourinho continued with a 3-4-1-2 set-up, Lukaku steered home a Pogba pass as United finally found a way past the Russians to secure top spot in Group A of the Champions League.

Even more encouragingly for the 35.1% of FPL bosses who have stayed loyal to the forward, he was a purposeful presence throughout the match, although he did miss one big chance when the score was still 0-0.

More than 115,000 have sold Lukaku this week, with 47,000+ moving on to Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata. That’s the most popular swap ahead of Gameweek 16, while 70,000+ made the exact same move last week as well.

But Man City’s defence have kept just one clean sheet over the past six matches and once the derby is done, United’s schedule is set fair until a New Year’s Eve trip to Tottenham.

Rashford hit last night’s winner from a Juan Mata assist to break his own nine-match scoring drought in all competitions.

The 7.6-priced England international was a constant threat against the Russians last night, firing five efforts to Lukaku’s three.

However, Mourinho’s recent teamsheets indicate that Rashford – who has played just 26 minutes in the last two Gameweeks – could be back on bench-warming duties against City.

Anthony Martial was afforded just 17 minutes as a substitute last night and, having started the last four Gameweeks – supplying two goals and an assist – looks likely to partner Lukaku up top on Sunday.

Similarly, Jesse Lingard – unused against the Russians – looks likely to replace Mata in the support role, having netted twice against Arsenal last week.

In defence, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof worked in tandem for the fifth straight match in all competitions, with Daley Blind completing the back three as Marcos Rojo was rested.

The United boss made a total of five changes ahead of the derby, also giving the likes of David de Gea and Ashley Young the night off, with Sergio Romero, Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera, Mata and Rashford coming in.

The draw for the Champions League knockout stages takes place on Monday.

The first legs of the Round of 16 will take place on February 13/14 (after Gameweek 27) and 20/21 (prior to Gameweek 28), the second legs on March 6/7 and 13/14, either side of Gameweek 30.

Hazard productive in Chelsea stalemate

Chelsea came from behind to draw 1-1 with Atletico Madrid, but it wasn’t enough for the Blues to win Group C.

Coach Antonio Conte made just three changes from the team that beat Newcastle United at the weekend, with the most significant player rested on the night the 15.8%-owned wing-back Marcos Alonso.

Notably, Alonso is the only outfield player to start every league match for the Blues this term and now looks set to return to the teamsheet away to West Ham on Saturday lunchtime.

He was joined on the sidelines by Antonio Rudiger and Danny Drinkwater, with Davide Zappacosta, Gary Cahill and Tiemoue Bakayoko coming in.

The two most popular purchases heading into Gameweek 16, Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata, both started. The former played the full match, while the latter was replaced by Michy Batshuayi for the final nine minutes.

The in-form Hazard, who has five goals and three assists from his last six league starts, was a threat throughout and instigated the equaliser when his cross/shot was turned into the net by Atletico defender Stefan Savic.

However, it was Morata who boasted the hosts’ chief goal threat – he fired seven attempts to Hazard’s two and also bettered him for shots on target, by five to zero.

FPL managers owning Hazard (12.5%) and Morata (35.5%) will have been concerned to see their star men play so long last night, although Conte had little choice but to go with his key attackers with the chance to top the group up for grabs.

With a trip to the London Stadium on Saturday followed by a clash against Huddersfield just three days later, those owners will be hoping that Conte doesn’t manage their minutes too keenly.

Of the two, it’s arguably the Spaniard who looks more at risk of a rest as he’s started the last seven Gameweeks, and finished the last five, whereas Hazard sat out all but nine minutes of Gameweek 14’s win over Swansea City.

Meanwhile, emerging Fantasy asset Andreas Christensen made his sixth straight start in all competitions, and the 5.5-priced centre-half underlined his potential at set-pieces with a couple of headed chances last night. He would seem destined for another start the London Stadium with David Luiz set to remain on the sidelines with his ongoing knee problem.

That's a shame for Brady. He was a big part of that team. Hope he gets well soon.

Big injuries hit the smaller clubs harder.

Regarding Kane - he's still scored 2 goals in his last 3 FPL games. So not exactly out of form.

I understand he's not getting the big points right now, but he will at some point.

  6. The Kane exit and midfield switcheroo strategy

Enjoyed the Scoutcast tonight. Surprised about the thoughts on Harry Kane and what to do with him. One thing the scouts didn't mention about the City, Burnley and Southampton fixtures is the faith they would have in captaining him (nor did it mention this in the article I don't think). This seems strange to me because this must affect the decision to keep or sell.

So lets consider the potential of going without Kane from gw18 and getting him back for the dgw 22.

City gw18 away. Many managers probably won't captain him for this fixture when it's ArsNew, CheSou BouLiv, these 3 fixtures offer much better captains than Kane

Burnley gw19 away. Not a good game to captain any player. Arsenal play Pool so that potentially rules out a captain from these teams. Chelsea travel to Everton, surely that's a good game for Haz and Morata and City host Bournemouth however City are unreliable for captains.

Southampton GW20 home. This could be a decent fixture to captain Kane but you also have these fixtures to consider CheBri, LivSwa, CplArs. Maybe Kane gets a haul in this game but if your captain, be it Haz, Morata, Cout, Salah, Firm, Sanchez, Lacazette does well, then the damage would be negligable.

So, Kane's immediate 2 fixtures after Brighton are tough and many managers won't captain him. They're are plenty alternatives, arguably better options, then he faces Southampton at Wembley and then he blanks (GW22).

By selling Kane and pumping money into midfield you have a lot of options. Take for example Kane and your 5th mid that's at least 17.1m. That's alot of money for 2 players.

Could get double Arsenal; Ramsey + Lacazette = 17.5m

    Differential; Sanchez + Calvert Lewin = 17m

    Double Liverpool Cout + Firmino = 17.5m

These are just 3 great options. You may get a little rotation but all these players, Calvert aside, could outscore Kane in the 3 fixtures on their own and then Kane blanks.

Could be a shrewd strategy for those looking to gain some ground over the month of December.

Spurs have been terrible lately. And I get Haz’s appeal but as I already have him there’s no need to gamble without Kane now. I’ll probably do it after the next two and get him back for 22, though.

As the only one who said I was willing to sell Kane over those fixtures, and pumping money into one midfield place to ensure I can get him back, I can answer that.

Just assumed it was a given that I didn't want to captain him over that period given I don't even want to own him then.

If I thought he'd get a steady goal a game I'd keep him and still not captain him.

As you say though I think the strategy I outlined last night that you also mention here could be shrewd....or foolish if Kane ends up scoring unlikely hatfuls away to City and Burnley 😉

Yes I knew your stance before the Scoutcast, was surprised at Mark's, Az seemed unsure I thought.

It could bite hard agreed but with few managers captaining him, I think the danger would be minimal if other premium tickets are also firing.

All depends on the situation after the Stoke and Brighton games but he and Spurs need to do something special for me to consider keeping him based on what we know from the past 15 gw's.

Indeed. Just makes so much sense to swap a cheap mid with bad fixtures and a 12.8 striker with poor fixtures to two players with good fixtures. Even if one of the new recruits over those fixtures does well we would still be up on the deal.

If he blanks against Stoke I may change my mind, but pretty certain he won't be leaving my team in the forseeable.
I'm happy to own him and just not captain him, which a lot of people are reluctant to do.

Amd lots will do this too and it's probably the safe bet in your position but it could offer a porentially huge rank boost which is what Im willing to punt on especially if he's not captaincy material then.

If he hauls against Saints, he hauls and many may have captained him but my captain pick could easily haul too and Kane blanks in Gw21 and I'll have someone like Laca and Ramsey against West Brom instead of someone like RLC coming off RLC against City in my case

With so many other Captain options I don’t see this an issue - moving the C around is risky but Kane is explosive and getting a haul from him even with out the C is hardly the end of the world ....

Glad to hear someone else thinks Lacazette is an option, I fancy I might do Kane and Ward to Lacazette and Kolasinac.

Could also do something like Kane, Ward, RLC to Rooney, Monreal, Coutinho for -4, would then need to take another -4 for to get Kane back and lose Coutinho in week 22, so not massive on that at the moment, especially when my benchable players (Mariappa, Dunk, RLC and Shaqiri) have good fixtures during that time.

The beauty of doing RLC and Kane to two others is that there are so many options.

        1. Pep says
          • 8 Years

They're quite endless for 17.1m. Also, you wouldn't necessarily need to drop the midfielder you bring in for RLC, you could drop a similarly priced one.

Eg, if you bring in Coutinho, you could drop Sané instead. Or if you bring in Ramsey you could drop Richarlison instead. Bring in Lacazette you could drop Morata instead. These 4 weeks without Kane will give us time to decide which players to keep and I plan to downgrade Ward in the meantime to bank some cash in case I need more money. Looking at Dummet currently going by the fixture list from gw19/20. It looks pretty grim for a lot of teams

Those are exactly the options I’m considering except the Pool one because I already have Salah & Coutinho but could get a City mid instead.

Kane's form dependant of course. I don't wanna buy him back for 13m but if he stays quite in the next 2 then it's worth a shot. So many people doing just fine without him, can't see how why it'll be any different over the more difficult games

Yup agreed dint realise that if he does well next 2 he’ll probaly be near 13m.

But yes the points on offer elsewhere for those 4 gameweeks is very tempting to make the move.

It doesn’t necessarily mean that if he scores a hattie against Stoke or Brighton he’ll do that against City or Burnley.

It’s the price I’ll pay for getting him back in GW22 which worries if he gets a hattie in the next 2.

All set on selling Kane + RLC GW 18. Could be a major rank boost if it comes off. Mark mentioned on the scoutcast the 2 cricial transfers it takes away though. It's actually 4 transfers as those moves have to be reversed in GW 22. So is it still worth it???

He did but he also took a hit to get Christensen in this week and AZ took one to get Hazard so I don't see why they look at it any differently. As I mentioned to Jonty above, it'll also give you the opportunity to keep one of the players you bring in and swap out a similarly priced player, ie if you bring in Laca,Morata isn't in form and Laca is, keep Laca. Could end up working beautifully

      My personal analysis of Kane:

Thing is, Kane WILL pay off (in due time), it's just about some opportunity cost, will the replacements pay off too?

A quick look at Kane's numbers, he has 10 goals (most of any forward), he's also got 14 bonus points (most of any forward).

In fact, his 10 goals came in like that (goals scored per games he's scored in), 2-2-2-2-1-1, grabbing him 3-3-3-3-2-0 bonus points respectively.

Alli and Eriksen are doing horrible, which means he will most probably get bonus points as the star performer if he scored.

But that also limits his assists (1 so far) as no one is willing to take the initiative, any other goal-scoring capabilities are coming from outside the box shots, or headed in by defenders, which means he will have no role to play there.

Add to that the fact that the other remaining option that affects Kane is Son; who is playing very individually this year with no assists so far.

So the environment looks dry for Spurs to constantly score (with only Kane being the real threat), which could work in his favor (more bonus), and against him (less assists, less manmarking other players).

With the constant tinkering and rotation in the squad, every outcome in any game is literally possible.

I personally have paid the price of not having Hazard in the last few game weeks, so I did Kane-Zaha ----> Firmino-Hazard.

I have some budget left, and my strategy for the future (mids and forwards) is to sit and watch the next couple of gameweeks, things I'll be considering:

      - the way spurs are looking (lamela's entrance could be an asset for Kane holders as he has the habit of providing several assists over a short period of time)
      - ARSENAL COVERAGE. i think that is much needed
      - Aguero or Jesus, (one of these treats might be delicios)

Can't do everything, so I limited my 3-6 gw strategy to these 3 options.

Good points. Again it comes down to captaincy mostly for me. If I'm not gonna captain him against City and Burnley, then Laca and Ramsey seem great option over Kane and RLC/4th defender for me

        1. The Bad Seed
          • 6 Years
          6 years, 4 months ago

Exactly, with the big guns is mind, it's all about captaincy here otherwise a 12.7 price tag doesn't really justify a 6 point outcome like last week (1 goal, 0 bonus), even if that does happen every week.

Bonus is really a bonus and could work wonders; 6 bonus points for captaincy is really what we are all looking for. That's like really having a 12th player deliver something small.

Until spurs as a whole get better and start free scoring, I'm holding off. With their current lag in points, and the congested fixtures coming up, they'll lock down games after 1-2 goals and secure the 3 points. That doesn't work well with a captained forward.

Will definitely be reconsidering him for the DGW, but for now, I figured that the wisdom for December would reside in having an overall stronger squad as opposed to heavy hitters and bench fodder. I won't mind having my players rested (salah, hazard, firmino), good bench goes in, then the rested players re-enter with fresh legs the GW after.

Actually, the resting of big hitters will hurt my competition more than me, and I will wish for it, as many are overlooking the importance of a balanced squad in december, or are plagued with injuries.

A lot can change, an injury, red card, or yellow for some (morata eg) will reshuffle all the cards, once that happens, a balanced squad helps even more to mitigate damages without taking hits.

Come December, injuries look imminent, and clean sheets less probable for all teams, hence looking at a 3-5-2/3-4-3 with power on the bench.

Btw amazing analysis providing captaincy options for every week, that view was missing across 3-4 attackers.

one more note: Kane's most prolific month is January (not December, even though he's played more games in December, he's historically scored 12 in Jan and 8 in Dec, and Kane does have the habit of abiding by superstitions)

Yes I know and understand the thread, but there is a bigger picture - selling Kane means using the money elsewhere and a lot of that money is heading to Hazard.

I'm keeping for the foreseeable. The problem with selling early is his price. If you sell him before this weekend and he scores big then he could easily go up 0.2 before the next gameweek and you would find it hard not to panic him back in your team

stance on it is it will be possible to find a combo to beat kane+1 over this period, almost definitely so, but it will cost 2+ transfers short term, 4+ medium term if you want him back, and there is still the challenge to work out who is the combo to do so.

Lacka's lack of proper game minutes and his even distribution of goals worries me.

He's managed to grab above 6 points just once (13), and only 3 bonus points in total (in that 13 point game).

With that in mind, his point in flow always looks like: 4-5-4-6-5, when he scores, with rare (if any,) bonuses. Add to that the poor, poor assist and dribble and pass completion (due to his nature of play), which further limits any appeal for any bonus points except if he scores a brace.

no bonus, no differential... no appeal really.

Not sure if he's the man for arsenal coverage. Ozil, for cheaper, seems to be more aggressive of late. But this takes us back to the midfield dilemma. A move for Firmino or Vardy or a striker in that bracket instead of Lacka can free up cash to upgrade a 3rd/4th mid to Ozil.

          Any thoughts?

You reckon his gameplay minutes or game impact will improve?

            His 5-game sequences this season have been 6-2-1-6-2 (3.4ppg), 13-2-2-6-2 (5.0ppg) and 4-5-2-5-6 (4.4ppg).

He has blanked against Stoke, Liverpool, Chelsea, Brighton, Watford, Swansea and Burnley, and scored or assisted against Leicester, Bournemouth, West Brom, Everton, Man City, Spurs, Huddersfield and Man United.

That's 3 returns and 2 blanks against the top six, 5 returns and 5 blanks against the rest.

So he's no more likely to get an assist or goal against one of the also-rans than he is against a top six side, only averages 4.3ppg, and has only once got more than 6 points.

Rooney, Firmino and Vardy all have better records, as have half a dozen other Arsenal players including Ramsey and Kolasinac, and plenty of midfielders.

That's exactly what I was saying; thanks for updating the numbers for a better view.

All those which you mentioned are also cheaper, and have a much higher chance of grabbing bonus points when they actually do something.

Arsenal's sideways passing and dribbling game always always earns the mids and wingbacks bonus points.

Lacka and Giroud are always barely visible on the BPS unless they score; which even then, they're just on the list of BPS, but still not earning any bonus.

With the big guns all in midfield and requiring a lot of cash, it's an utter waste to spend 10+ on the likes of Lacka IMO.

West Brom - Arsenal doesnt strike me as a 0-4 fixture, though. More like 2-1/1-1/1-2.

Instead of double Arsenal I think Id rather go for sth like Coutinho+Vardy/Firmino or Sanchez/KDB+cheap fwd with good fixtures or Sané+Firmino.

Very likely going Kane/RLC to Sanchez/DCL after Brighton.

An interesting option later for DGW is then to bring Kane back for Morata while downgrading an Alonso type to cheaper D, keeping Sanchez (depending on YC/Man City interest causing disruption). (I also have Haz/Cout/Salah - so that would make for a monster Midfield). Thoughts?

This. You don't have to reverse the transfers exactly. You may have a similarly priced player who who you want to lose instead therefore it is 4 transfer but it's only 2 for Kane out and Kane back in, the other 2 could be entirely different and profitable like in your case, holding Sanchez and losing Morata. You have the choice so it's not as restrictive as some are perceiving it to be

      Great hot topic.

I agree that Kane out after Brighton is a very viable option and also interested in Arsenal coverage over the Christmas period but I can't take to Lacazette... he gets subbed early and I can see Giroud starting one or two matches over the busy period. Kane and Carroll to DCL/Niasse and Sanchez would probably be my move, and then reverse it for GW22.

So many options. At least with Laca he'll play most games for an hour I guess and he's proven to be effective as an impact sub (just like Giroud) in the city game. Laca and Ramsey for me provide good coverage for Arsenal attack rather than going for just Sanchez, id be a little reluctant to captain him. Got 2 gw's to suss out the situation though so I'm not ruling anything out. Even holding Kane

I am in the keep Kane camp. The captaincy options you mention can be in your team including Kane. Personally, I have Morata, Hazard, Sterling and Salah who I can easily cap.

For me, it doesn't make sense to drop Kane and distribute funds for 3-4 weeks and get him back later. Chances are you'll be taking a few hits and if there's injury/suspension during that period in your team, your planning could fail massively.

His stats are decent, the team doesn't look good atm but Kane looks pretty good. They have the fixtures and we know Kane is a 20-goal striker that can turn up against anyone. Could cap Chelsea/Liverpool assets over him anyway.

      1. Pep says

For me, Laca and Ramsey offer much more than RLC/4th defender and Kane (non captain) especially in GW 21 when I'll have to play RLC and 4th defender because Kane doesn't have a game

And regarding injuries, if Morata Haz Salah or Cout get injured, chances are it affects alot of players not just me. Morata will exit for Kane if he gets injured. Laca will exit for Kane if he gets injured. And if one of the mids gets injured, I'll drop them instead of Ramsey to get Kane back. So the risk is negligable imo

Watched the scoutcast last night and I'm with Mark, it's not worth wasting the transfers for someone I'll be getting back who's just as likely to score points as anyone else, also, found it quite bizarre that the justification for losing Kane was to put money on to Sanchez, I'm not sure if anyone's been watching Sanchez much but he's a shadow of his former self, thought he was the worse player on the pitch against United.

I go to all the home games so get to watch him very closely and Mark seems the only ones who been paying attention, he's not right and hasn't been all season.

One thing that was also very odd, the thought of selling Kane because he plays Burnley and City, two 'hard' fixtures, Kane is not really Lukaku, he does turn up in big games, his NLD performances have been strong since he arrived and who can forget him killing Chelsea on New Years Day, they made him sound like he's incapable of imposing himself in big games which is a bit of an odd view.

Another problem with selling to redistribute in midfield, is the availabiltiy of heavy htting budget mids like Gross. Richarlison, Choupo etc., combined with reasonably priced City mids and Salah, Ramsey etc. If not insisting on doubling up on Haz + Sanchez, there's simply no need to sell him for the funds. And most of us have value tied up in said budget midfielders. I'm playing 3-5-2, and consider Gross and Richarlison season keepers. Furthermore, the expensive defenders have not been that reliable lately (yes Azpi, I'm looking at you...)

Am I the only one here who is thinking of going Kaneless for gw22? (Kane non-owner)
Getting in Kane will be a big headache even with 2 FT without sacrificing my big hitters & disturbing the balance of the team. Not to forget the value lost if I wish to get them back. Tried out a few iterations with my current team & Kane just doesn't fit.
Next 2 fix after that looks good but after that MUN liv ARS doesn't look that attractive. So for me no Kane even for dgw.
Of course all of this could change if Kane starts finding net more often in the coming gameweeks. Or else I'll be ready with a big couch come gw 22.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Early thoughts on captaining Kane Gameweek 16.

Home to a travel sick Stoke side and with strong underlying stats surely makes captaining Kane a no-brainer.

But with blanks against similarly easy opponents at Wembley this season captaining Kane comes with a health warning.

If you own Kane are you captaining him?

If not why and why do you prefer?

And if you are handing him the armband what arguments do you have to persuade non-believers?

Some are good, some are bad.

        Lots of shots

But others have more big chances.

One for the Who Got the Assist boys and their psychology analysis.

I'm with you though - I'm taking note of those worrying accuracy and big chances stats and less interested in the huge amount of shots - which are no good if not of quality.

That's it. As you know, I am a nutter for shots on target, when you get to the big boys. Numbers of shots are for the tiddlers, like Alonso, for instance. 😉

Oops missed this! Out in the far East on hols at the moment.

Think it's confirmation bias; if you are minded to captain Kane, you'll be looking for the stats that support your argument. If you are looking for a reason to avoid, vice versa. Both arguments can be framed through a presenting the Kane stats differently, though ffs always does a good job of being as objective as possible!

Personally I think I'm just going to leave it on Kane, and indeed trust in my side as my hits have not paid off this year. Coutinho in for RLC and a shift to 3-5-2 on mini WC midweek I suspect!

Own Kane, but going to captain Hazard. He's in better form and is playing in just as attractive a fixture as Kane is.

I think Kane is the best shout for GW17 though in midweek. All the other big hitter captaincy rivals for that gameweek are rotation risks, whereas Kane should be nailed. He also has a strong fixture.

I agree but I am still afraid Hazard will get some rest against West ham, played 90 min yesterday (same goes for Morata, he certainly need some rest) and I think Conte is really careful with his favorite toy (Haz).

I think he might have his minutes managed, but it is a derby match of sorts and I think Conte will go with his strongest team. If he decides to rest any of his attackers completely I think it will be Morata who has played close to 90 minutes 4 times in the last 10 days. If Morata is rested I think Hazard will play as a centre forward flanked by Pedro and Willian, as I don't think Conte trusts Batshuyi, who is only just returning from injury anyway.

If Hazard is taken off early, it will only be if the game is won, and if the game is won, then I think Hazard will have been involved. So I think its only a unique, low percentage set of circumstances in which Hazard can fail this weekend (famous last words there!).

I do think Hazard will be benched next midweek v Huddersfield (GW17), as he was against Swansea last week though.

I just sold Kane to enable Hazard

My league rival is leading and has Kane so I'm a bit worried

As long as Alli + Eriksen are not performing well, Kane doesn't seem to be the best option at that price

      I did Kane + T. Carroll --> Firmino + Hazard

So as long as Haz + Firmino outscore those two I'm good
With Che and Liv fixtures they should

"Let's captain Kane to see if he will score. He must score".This is the thought of everyone.I don't know if i must follow this thought. If he scores he plays against Brighton next and for this gw Hazard,Morata,Salah are decent options for the captaincy.

I'll be captaining Kane because its against Stoke and I don't own Hazard.

Although spurs are poor I'm hoping Stoke's defence is even worse, conceded 2 in last 2 away games against Palace and Brighton. I thought Watford would be poor defensively last week too though.

The same was said before Spurs played Palace. Teams, bar Liverpool, will pack their defence when playing at Wembley. Spurs’ form is more alarming esp when Toby is out.

I agree with this up to the point where the opposing team concedes at which time they will likely go for broke as they are playing at Wembley and will want to give a good showing. If this happens I can see spurs opening someone and giving them a pasting like Liverpool.

Spurs won Bournemouth and Palace by only 1-0. They didn’t give teams the roasting. The problem is Spurs defence without Toby have been conceding first for the past few EPL matches which makes it harder for Spurs to open up opponent’s defence.

Nope, nope, nope. The armband is going absolutely nowhere near Kane this week, for two simple reason: he has absolutely terrible FPL form, and Spurs as a whole have absolutely terrible form.

Hazard, Morata, Salah - all these have better form and perfectly good fixtures this week. Why waste a captaincy on Kane to be disappointed again?

If he scores a couple and/or Spurs rediscover their attacking swagger, then maybe I’ll start to consider him for Brighton next week. But based on what you see him and Spurs produce, why on earth would you captain him this week?

If you roll a dice with just one 1 and 5 sixes on it it may just turn up 5 ones in a row and no 6. That doesn't change the odds of a 6 coming up in the next throw. Fact is if spurs scored early in any of those easy games then spurs would likely have hammered them. He is still the best odds for a major haul this week and his unfortunate returns against the lesser teams to date didn't change that.

The dice for Spurs would have 2 sixes, not 5.

They couldn't even beat them and you're talking about hammering. They don't have to score first to win the match. They're getting draws and losses, so they're out of form, period.

It's called game state. A team can sit back and defend in numbers while they have a chance of getting something out of the game. Once they concede they have to make a decision whether to come out and try and get something out of the game (which they generally do) and this leaves them open to counter attacks which leads to big chances which are much higher chance of conversion

I'm well aware of that. But you still haven't responded to my point.

The small teams can sit back and defend in numbers against all big teams. But we're not having any issues getting points from Chelsea and Liverpool attackers, are we?

Spurs conceded first in their last 3 games. Against WBA, Leicester and Watford. So by your definition of 'game state', they should have come out and attacked more to win the games right? And they didn't win any of them. Whereas when Chelsea and United conceded first against Newcastle, they came back to hammer them.

Out of form, let's be real. Permanently out of form at Wembley and temporarily out of form away from home.

You might be right re form but i don't think it is a coincidence that they were able to profit at home v liverpool and in those away games that kane did well when all were reliant on game state.

I don't think you understand game state as well as you think though as if the weaker team scores first then they have even more to hold on to and the stronger team has even less chances to hit teams on the counter.
This is not a new phenomena for spurs as they had some poor draws at home v smaller teams last season too. The thing is once they got the first goal v weaker opposition last season they often went on to hammer them. They simply have not had the chance to do it this season yet.

                      - That's because Liverpool have a manager who just wants to attack every game. So they were exposed (not for the first time). And Spurs' away form was good before. Now it's not.

                      - Bruh, Leicester and Watford didn't sit back and defend from the start. They just attacked them. So by your definition, Spurs should have had lots of chances. And as I said, Newcastle scored against Chelsea and United first and still got hammered. West Ham scored against City first and still lost. They couldn't hold on to their leads. This is because those teams had form whereas Spurs don't.

There's no point comparing Spurs with how they did last season. They deservedly finished second last year. They're not as good this year, Wembley being one of the factors. You can talk about ifs and buts and that they would've scored in this scenario or that, but none of the other big teams I mentioned have had this issue.

More pertinent to look at spurs last year than what happens with other teams. Yes form comes into it but spurs had "form" going into those two back to back easy home games last season where (they rightly finished second as you say) they blanked.
Re Kane away form last season he had 5 goals in 12 away games before those two away games at the end of the seaso where he scored 7 in two. Spurs are the same team away from home this year but all of a sudden because of a few results people say they have "form".

Your last point about none of the other teams having this problem just shows why you shouldn't be comparing sours with these teams per se as all you have to do is look at spurs at home last season to see it happened then as well even when they were in "form".

Game state young padawan, looks like spurs found some form after all? Corrolory is looks like Chelsea struggled due to game state v west ham. I hope this little lesson hasn't cost you too many points.

I'll captain Hazard because he is in better form. In fact, with Hazard, Salah and Morata in my team I see no need to captain Kane before gw22 and he won't be in my team bar a dramatic upturn in form from Spurs.

Owner, but captaining Salah. Fed up doing the hokey cokey with transfers and missing hauls so leaving the armband on the Egyptian until the new year.

I currently have the armband on Kane. I know...but there is semi-logic to my madness. When I have a player that is on their last legs in my team, as Kane is now, I captain them one last time. Consider it his last chance before I sell him.

      No, no, no, no.

I’m not letting him ruin my game week again.

5 captain blanks from 7 attempts.

      Hazard. In form. Simple.

Don't forget to add the times that he hauls when you don't have him as (C) - its my season he has done for not a gameweek...

Haha I wasn’t going to go that far but yeah he’s screwed my season. Took him out twice he’s hauled, don’t captain him he scores, captain him he mostly blanks.

          Fed up.

I’ll keep him to avoid being hurt if he hauls but he won’t be getting the armband from me for the forseable.

Yep, Kane (c) locked in. I've made my bed with Kane all season and a number of rivals above me have swerved him, so I need to lie in this bed and make it work.

Own Kane, Salah and Hazard, will be captaining Kane.

Can't do anything about last week's blank, looking at this week, Spurs have the best fixture against one of the ropiest defences.

Not interested in underlying stats, Kane had poor stats through B2B C blanks last year against Hull and Burnley and then exploded, Aguero is another who looked disappointing before people lost faith and captained Mahrez two years ago, Aguero then went on to score 5 against Newcastle.

These are elite level strikers who can turn it on at any given time.

Can see it playing out now, those who captained Hazard last week and those who own him but didn't will gravitate towards last week's points, Hazard will blank (well he is the most transferred in player this week) and Kane will haul and that advantage from last week will be levelled out.

      Remember who said it.

Captaining him. Will sell him in a week anyway, regardless of his results. This year he is nowhere near his worth an neither is Spurs. So my decision is firm to sell him before the City game. and so I will captain him. otherwise, why do I still keep him...

Sold him 8 weeks ago, so not captaining. But this is the first week that I'm genuinely fearful about not having him, Stoke have been abysmal at the back and I can see Spurs and Kane getting a few

However I've spread his money over the mf and have Hazard, Salah, Coutinho, Sterling and Ramsey in there so will captain Salah and have faith that the rest of the team can make up the slack. It's worked so far!!!!

With Coutinho’s performance at Brighton a lot of people are looking at him as a Sane’s replacement (including myself).
But how do we think he’s gonna perform when he’ll play in the midfield behind Mané-Firmino-Salah?
His double digits happened when he played in the front three right (Mané rested/injured)? Do you guys think he can keep these kind of numbers in a midfield position?

Yes, i think he will have a great ppg. Only problem is he gets injured frequently so you need to use up extra transfers to trnsfer him in and out.

points from liverpool players have been a lottery for last couple of seasons (aside from Salah this season), and i think that will remain to be the case

Cout will have explosive weeks, and quiet weeks, overall returns will depend on Klopp's decisions on how to use him

doesnt make a difference imo. He's always in the same place on the pitch, whether he officially starts as a LCM or LF. Klopp's rotation puts me off him though

had those doubts last season, then he quickly erased those doubts with his 19 pointer vs west ham in the deeper role.
would be more concerned about playing position if he wasn't such a threat from set-pieces.
he's just too good a player not to be a threat anywhere other than DM

Not overly convinced by other options.
Salah up against a big Sam defence. Packing the middle and not playing a high line.
West ham much improved against City - probably won't win.
Stoke generally bad against top sides away from home.
Jonty you've been saying for ages Kane a bigger threat when don't dominate possession. Surely City game ideal for Kane.
Also fancy Spurs more when they don't go 3 at the back.

Lads, brainstorming exercise. What to do with this lot?

    Fab - (Elliot)
    Azpi - Otamendi - Kola - Mee - (Naughton)
    Salah - Haz - Richarlison - GroB - Silva
    Kane - (Wilson, Niasse)

Potential fires are Silva, Wilson, Niasse & Elliot

With Man U and Spurs on the Radar for City in the next 3 weeks. Would moving out DSilva (75%) for Mahrez be an option in the short term?

    Thoughts?

    DSilva V Man u / Swansea / Spurs

    mahrez V Newcastle / Southampton / Palace

Have Sterling / Salah / GroB / Richarlison already in middle.
