FFS Cup

FFS Cup – First Round Draw

This afternoon we reveal the first round ties in our open to all Fantasy Premier League cup competition.

More than 2,500 took part in Gameweek 15’s qualifying round, which saw 1,016 managers join eight former winners, donnellyc, Gribude, Ninja_Fit_Saints, Wild Rover, Mark, A Manager Has No Name and our reigning champion, Sleepysi, along with myself in this weekend’s first round encounters.

The qualifying score was 55 points, which was 11 points above the Gameweek average. Entry was decided by rank and, for the first time in this competition, goals scored.

Mufasa scrapes through thanks to a total of four goals from Manchester City’s David Silva, along with Chelsea duo Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata.

But Ifyoutinkeryoullhaveastinker just misses out – he reached the same ranking cut off point (of 42,101) among those with 55 points and made the same number of transfers (18) as Mufasa but his squad scored just three goals by comparison.

The goals scored in a Gameweek rule is applied by the Fantasy Premier League in tie-breaks in cup matches, with fewest goals conceded and then a virtual coin toss then deployed if the tie is still drawn.

A scan of the draws reveals a mixed set of fixtures for our champions, with 48,313th-ranked Sleepysi looking to defend his crown against Tossed & Blown In My, who is 31,129 places below him.

A Manager Has No Name, who at 495th is the highest ranked former champion, should be in confident mood as he prepares to take on 116,270-placed QueSalahSalah.

Meanwhile, 387,764-ranked Wild Rover meets Wulffricc, who is 89,805 places behind him.

The draw has also been kind to me, as my 23,511-ranked team prepares to battle 1,3330,951 placed Shimmy. Similarly, Gribude (ranked 50,828) squares up to 680,217 placed Oscor5.

In contrast, 101,705 ranked Mark has to navigate his way past johnygs11, who sits in 4,389th spot after handing the armband to Hazard in Gameweek 15 to earn a fourth green arrow in a row.

Ninja_Fit_Saints, who is placed at 661,038 in the overall rankings, has a potentially tricky tie, against 296,966-ranked wadester.

The nerves of 154,847-placed donnellyc may also be frayed by the weekend ahead of his clash with anthonyheredia, who sits in a lofty 4,951st spot.

Drawing the short straw this round is 548,652-placed Ryssel who takes on the first round’s highest ranked manager Whats the mata, who rose to 84th  in Gameweek 15. Like johnygs11, he also captained Hazard.

Other eye-catching matches include a community veterans tussle between 11,206 placed RoysCallerAnne and 209,870 ranked FrankieTheGent, while community writer Your Mums Athletic (ranked 1,283,023) braces himself for an encounter with 42,003-placed The Snazzy Viking.

Elsewhere, the Scoutcast’s Az takes his 4,983 ranked side into a match up with 135,036 placed Gers95.

The full first round draw can be found here.

Stoke's team tactics last week seemed to be long balls for Big Pete, with their three attacking mids running onto the flick ons. Crouch will get decent minutes, assists, and goals.

Not captaining Kane any time soon. Damnn the below statistic makes me sick 😉

Harry Kane captain 7 times = 58 points (average 8.3 points)

    Lukaku(3) + Aguero(1) captained 4 times = 72 points (average 18 points)

    Anyone else similar?

the total numbers of teams has to be a certain number so that when everyone plays each other it filters down to the final 2, the number they've gone for is 1024 and so 55 is probably the score of the 1024th player who wanted to play.

any mods on here - are the team in the cup allowed to have been created in a later stage than gw1? so in theory someone could have created a team in gw15 just for the cup and have all their chips? is there a vetting system for this or too much work?

It's not really been a major issue previously, but as the user base has grown and monthly and weekly prizes were introduced, then it's become a factor.

We would have to change our code to run a check on GW's but pretty sure that can be done.

It's too late for this contest sadly but we will discuss it for future ones.

Could you not have the top x% OR enter, and then do a knockout with first rank vs last rank, and second vs second last etc

So it's seeded, like a normal knockout comp?

a bit like a lower division side knocking a high ranked PL side out of the FA Cup - it is all about what you do on the day 😉

I like that idea - start the cups a little earlier, accept all entries apart from those rejected for having multiple teams or being under moderation, and then give first round byes to those with the best overall rankings (and possibly also to former winners).

Wait I though it was always based on OR not game week rank for 1 week. That makes no sense to me. The current number 1 could have half his team rotated while some inactive manager ranked 5m OR who set and forget his team gets in as he finished higher in the GW. Anyone else think thats a little puzzling?

      Guess you didn’t qualify.

It’s a cup competition and it’s fair it’s done on the Gameweek. Every week is a head to head based on that gw score not OR.

There’s league competitions for overall score.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

It's a cup competition. Sometimes you qualify, sometimes you don't. It has nothing to do with overall rank. It's a break from the 'league' format we play week in week out.

I've missed out loads of times. That's because I didn't get the qualifying score.

I think the fact it is a cup makes using 1 week totally legit. What I don't like is the qualifying aspect, the excitement is comparing your team against another during a gameweek to see if you win or not.

So I would do away with qualifying and just have a first round of more than 2 teams in a group (like the world cup, champs league etc) it's just only 1 of 3 or 4 go through in the first round ( whatever is needed for the numbers)

The point being you have to beat the team in front of you on the day, in each round.
My point was rather that this would give everyone who entered an equivalent experience. Why have a qualifier at all?

No one should qualify ahead of you due to a lower score and a lower rank.

But if you ditch qualifying, the first round involves randomly selected groups of 4, who are your opponents to beat in order to get into the next round. If you score more than them you go through. Which is exactly what a cup is about, if one team loses 7-6 in the cup, they don't complain about some other team going through who only won 1-0.

Then the next round is exactly like the current 1st round where it's 1v1.

It would just make it more interesting for those who lose in the first round, than qualifying which is a bit dull.

Don't know why I'm going on about it, I didn't even enter 🙂

No, it shouldn't, it's a cup competition, which means whoever doesn't perform on that day (in this case, a GW) is out, so, yes, it doesn't matter if you're world number one, a cup competition cannot be influenced by overall ranking as it'll ruin the basic idea of cup competition, which gives opportunity to a David (low ranked team) to beat a Goliath (high overall ranked team)
So, no, don't be sour & try next year.

The best explanation regarding cup competition. It should be as it is. Everyone can enter, do your best for the qualifier and get in. There always a chance you will get beaten in the next round, even if are rank first in the world world.

For what it's worth, I didn't enter this year. I've just made a passing comment on how it works. People compare it to knockout football, but teams still qualify for tournaments through overall rankings. Why not just take the top x % OR players, and then seed it first against last and so on and so on

      Cup Qualification is Fair

I disagree with your point. Take golf for instance. Every year there's a matchplay event (basically a knockout tournament of 64 players).

The whole club will play a competition (upto 600 people) and the top 64 people will qualify.

Obviously you will have players who have been doing well all year and have a bad day. And of course you will have golfers who rarely play and this is their first competition. This might be because they love this type of competition.

So it's not fair to say that because you have a good rank you should automatically have qualified.

The fact is their are rules for entry and you weren't good enough to qualify.

Besides, you still have a great season going on, and I wish you the best of luck in a great finish. But some people who are struggling this season may look forward to the cup and let it take centre stage for their team.

Not a bad idea to include something like this - using the golf analogy the Top 50 in the world rankings qualify for the Open. maybe similar could be done with the Scout league. It would maybe encourage a few more to join it.

It should be as it is. To put on a different perspective, if rank/overall points is the key, FFS should arrange another cup competition and named it as FFS Champ of Champs cup where only the first 2500 ranked team from the previous year can enter. That way, it is more fair if rank/overall points is the key as people will try their best to accumulate points for next season competition.

I get where you are coming from. The qualifying round was known well in advance so you could have planned for it if the Cup means that much. 1024 in a draw is plenty vs the 2048 you want. Still have the Members one this week to qualify for.

I'm in favour of doubling the number of entrants too. In fact, the qualifying round should in my opinion only be there to whittle the entrants down to a power of two number (be that 1024, 2048 or whatever), with the maximum number of teams possible qualifying. This means with 2500 odd entrants you would have 2048 in the first round and only 20% of teams would miss the first cut. The fun of a cup competition is in the head-to-head matches so let's have as many of these as possible!

I think it's perfect the way it is. But I'd surely remove the rank based elimination of teams who have met the cut-off. Unfair on people who have done well that week but get punished for not having done well before. Rather have play-off matches between these teams. Will give them a much more fair chance.

A renaming of the cup might be sensible though .... 'Mostly Hazard Owners Gameweek 15 Cup' has a more authentic ring.

I don't see why you can't have one extra round with the top OR rank teams getting a bye like in fa cup. Everyone either qualifies or has the lottery of a h2h to qualify. In this way a bad week could still qualify and a good week could go out more in keeping with the rest of the cup format.

...although I did fill out a form so I guess I do give a very small toss. I'd gladly hand over my spot to get in the top 100k this season...

I don't join because annoyingly they show the rank against the team for no apparent reason. Meaning any of my rivals can get my rank and match it against my name. Then follow my every move. Data protection and all that. I urge FFS to change this

Your mini-league rivals can easily discover your rank and follow your FPL progress from the mini-league table.
But they can only track your FFS comments if they know your FFS name.
Who's going to bother checking through all the rankings in the Cup draw just to see if they recognise any of them?

Well I found one of mine last season this way. I looked at his or rank . Searched it from the cup article on here and it matched against his ffs name

Then I bookmarked his ffs page and saw what transfers he made most weeks 😉

You appear to have benefitted from it then, but I doubt if many of your rivals would go to that trouble.

That can happen if you request a RMT or ask for advice on your intended transfers and they know who you are.

I reached the semi-final of the FFS Members Cup one season, and happened to see a post from my opponent (waltzingmatildas) asking for advice on what transfers she should make that game-week and the replies to it.
I thought my team was better than hers and didn't do anything different as a result, but I still lost!

Ouch. Guess that one worked against you. Your probably right no one goes to this effort but I like to keep a close eye on the competition ;-). I just wouldn't like them spying on me lol

What score did you get in GW15?

Draw for Members Cup is not yet made. Are you on the entry list?

Is Christensen and Sterling to Kenny and Hazard worth a four point hit? (Have Azpi as well)

He is basically telling us i am in red hot form i said a few gw back it could be time to bring him in.

This is hard for me to ignore coming from a class act like Siggy.

WHo do you think scores more?

    A) Sterling (mu) +4

    B) Coutinho(EVE)

Expect a 2 pointer from sterling. Can see coutinho getting a double digit score.

So the hit could be even wiped off ttis gw. Longterm i fancy coutinho more than sterling

Wondering if someone could clear my head on this decision, here's my team, I really want to save a transfer for a mini WC next GW but also debating silva > coutinho for 3 weeks, and have several doubts in the defense, what do you think.

    * = doubts
    Fabianski
    *Mustafi, *Moreno, Christensen,Dunk
    Salah,Hazard (C), Richarlison, *Silva
    Kane, Morata

    subs:Elliot, Ward,Niasse,Carroll

I hate this qualifying method, can’t it be on overall points rather than a single week so you don’t have a tournament full of lucky Hazard captainers!

Its a knockout .. one bad week and you are out of the cup ... so why shouldn't the same apply for entering the cup

lol, this makes the weekend games just that tad more interesting 🙂
I have been correcting for a rather disastrous early few weeks and a shocker of a WC.
(I'll be at the Cape Town Sevens all Saturday and Sunday though, so I guess I'll be checking my phone often.)

And If I do beat Mr. 18th placed overall I guess I'll have to relent and finally sign up for a membership the second half of this year.

    Good luck to you all!
