Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Salah Delivers

Liverpool’s star man is on the mark yet again to help offset some of the damage suffered by those without Sergio Aguero following his four-goal haul.

It wasn’t quite the 21 points produced by the Man City striker on Saturday, but Mohamed Salah’s goal, assist and two bonus in the Reds’ 2-0 win at Southampton was another good job well done by the prolific Egyptian.

Some 22.1% of Fantasy Premier League (FP) managers made him Gameweek 27’s most captained player and enjoyed a 13-point tally – the 12th double-figure performance of his stellar season – as a result.

Exactly half of FPL’s pre-Gameweek 27 top 100 managers were among those handing him the armband (Aguero was picked by 26), and Salah is now likely to receive similar backing for the foreseeable future.

Liverpool have three home matches, against West Ham, Newcastle and Watford, in the next four, with only Gameweek 30’s trip to Man United likely to dull his captaincy prospects.

Then again, Salah’s form is so irresistible – he’s produced attacking returns in 16 of his last 18 appearances – that even Old Trafford might not be able to tame him.

He set up Roberto Firmino’s opener at St Mary’s before the roles were reversed for the second goal, providing the 39% of managers on the Brazilian with 12 points as their man also took home maximum bonus.

A run of two goals in the previous six Gameweeks had persuaded 93,000+ to sell Firmino ahead of Saturday’s deadline, but he now has 12 goals for the season – his best ever league total – as he continues to do battle with Jamie Vardy for the mid-price forward slot. Surprisingly, however, Firmino still ranks fourth for sales so far ahead of Gameweek 28.

Liverpool defenders have been rather less prized assets this season, but today’s clean sheet made it two shut-outs from their last four matches, both of which have come away from home.

It was also the first clean sheet the Reds have kept with Virgil Van Dijk (5.5%) in the side.

The Dutchman will now be considered as the ideal replacement for Nicolas Otamendi, particularly if Man City’s FA Cup tie with Wigan goes to a replay, thus taking them out of the Gameweek 28 meeting with Arsenal. City will also miss Gameweek 31 should they progress past the Latics.

Liverpool have no such worries, their fourth round exit in the cup ensuring that Gameweek’s fixture against Watford will definitely go ahead.

In fact, the Reds’ lack of FA Cup duty should be a real boon for Fantasy managers, lessening the threat of rotation despite their upcoming Champions League commitments.

Gameweek 29’s visit from Newcastle might be the exception, however, coming as it does just three days before the second leg of their European tie against Porto, with the United match following that four days later.

The magnitude of the later two fixtures suggests that coach Jurgen Klopp will field his strongest possible sides in both, perhaps creating anxiety for that teamsheet against the Magpies.

Unholy times for Saints

Southampton’s 3-2 win at West Brom last week proved to be a blip and they’ve now won just twice in the league since Gameweek 13.

They did at least force Loris Karius into four saves today, helping the Liverpool stopper earn a bonus point, but both form and fixtures are stacked against them now.

The Saints will play just two of their next eight matches at home, and one of those is against Chelsea.

Four of their next five (STK new swa whu) involve relegation rivals and will likely decide their fate as the schedule turns rather spiteful from Gameweek 33.

All of that means their assets have little to no Fantasy appeal now.

James Ward-Prowse’s run of three goals and two assists from his previous four starts prompted more than 78,000 managers to draft him in this week.

The midfielder did at least put in a shift for his new owners, delivering three key passes and having two efforts on target – both team-leading figures on the day.

But his withdrawal on 70 minutes suggests his pitch-time could even be in doubt again, having played 90 mins in each of the last four matches.

Just to dimish the lure of their players further, Southampton will miss Gameweek 31 if either they, or their scheduled league opponents Swansea City, win in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday.

The Saints travel to West Brom, while the Swans are also away, at Sheffield Wednesday.

Definitely no need to use your wildcard mate, you’ve got a solid team!

Maybe plan well for BGW31, then wildcard inbetween BGW 31 and BGW 35 so you are rid of your rubbish BGW31 players and prepared for any DGW news. Then free hit BGW35?

      Try it.

If you WC now you can load up on the best players, FH in 31, still have the best players through to 35 in knowledge many will have a double in 34. BGW35 will have at least 6 fixtures and 3 of the top 6 playing so you will easily put our a decent team ....

The reason I’m feeling the blues is I’m actually having some good scores, but still it’s red arrows... In GW26 for instance, Kane captain 26 points, Son 13, Salah 11, a decent week otherwise, but that was the week Arnie and Lanzini has huge scores —> red arrow... And now without Aguero, can’t get anywhere even though with Firmino, Salah captain, Sterling... The high-owned players get you nowhere, need good differentials...

Did anyone see the Hud/Bou game yesterday? I don't think I've ever seen a worse performance in the top flight than how Bournemouth played. They made Huddersfield look like the Galácticos, it was absolutely astonishing. Utter and complete garbage in every single position for 90 mins straight.

For the last time, DON'T make early transfers. Ever.

Robertson is a trap, I've owned him most of the season and he's been useless apart from sporadic 6 pointers. 0 attacking or bonus threat.

Ever? That isn’t practical advice. Sometimes imminent price changes warrant taking a calculated risk. Of course it IS a risk but there’s nothing worse than holding off getting someone, ending up priced out of the move and then seeing that player score big the next week.

Of course it’s preferable to wait but there’s no absolutes at all.

      Depends on several factors.
-Do you still have your FH/WC chips? GW31 looms.
      - Are you prepared for MCI rotation with the champions league starting - is your bench OK?
      - Are you playing for OR or ML position?

On balance without knowing your priorities I'd say no.

      1. Your Mum Zohore
        • 10 Years
        6 years, 2 months ago

        - WC used, chips intact
        - Think KDB & Sterling are nailed, bench not the greatest, but all starting players
        - OR atm

Think I'm quite happy with having the both of them ATM, there's always a possibility of Firm => Kun, but don't see it happening in the near future.

          OK - fair enough.
Incidentally, I'm contemplating selling Kun soon - maybe even this game week. I think that you're right about Sterling/KDB but I do think that their minutes will be somewhat restricted - maybe 70 to 75 minutes.
          Good luck.

Is Lingard worth one more week given the injuries to Rashford and Herrera?

If you are playing a heavy catch up I think it's worth to use your WC after the FA cup games.

        Pope (Speroni)
        Alonso Otamendi Jones (Ogbonna Long)
        Salah Sterling Son Shaqiri (Lingard)
        Kane Firmino Wilson

2FT, 1.4m ITB. Early days with FA Cup still to come but what do we reckon with this?
        (A) Otamendi to VVD
        (B) Otamendi, Lingard and Wilson to VVD, Mili and Vardy (-4)
        (C) Lingard to Walcott
        (D) Otamendi and Lingard to VVD and Walcott
        (E) Otamendi and Long to VVD and Bauer
        (F) Other?

I’m confused about the GW31 situation. Everyone keeps looking into the maths, but realistically we’re only looking at three games, no?

        Stoke v Everton
        Huddersfield v Palace
        Liverpool v Watford

So surely GW31 is a given for the FH chip? All this 35 stuff at 5.37743884 predicted blanks for 31... I don’t buy it.

It's just probability. Based on the chance of a couple of upsets or, in some cases, not even that.

It’s the bookies odds on what they will pay for a given outcome and nonsense in FPL terms - grossing/adding up a .05 chance of City going out, and .2 chance Swansea going out and the other games etc and reflecting that in a estimate of blanks is just complete and utter nonsense.

Ignore it and just look at the fixtures and make your own judgement

The reason 35 is more appealing is that those three games you've mentioned above likely don't contain many points, i.e. One big team. If 35 has just 3/4 big teams missing, a FH then likely has much more potential.

Look at it this way, I've used mine... but will likely have 8 players including 3 pool... how much are you going to gain on me with the other 3?

        Aguero Firmino Wilson

        Speroni Lingard Ogbonna Hunemeir

        1 FT, 3.3 ITB??

        Most pressing transfer here??

Pretty set on doing Aguero >> Kane... but is there anything else to take a hit on?

        Thanks.

Depends on the amount of fixtures, but assuming only 3 fixtures I'm aiming at 8.
3 pool, shaq, wally and a few "rotation" defenders

Depend which teams won't blank really. I have six now, assuming assist machine Cuco will start.

Salah, Firmino and 2 FT for me. I will decide after FA cup games to whether load them up or just use the FH.

I usually act like furious lightning to ditch players when they don't perform, Sanchez and Lukaku are lucky they still sit in my team today.

Sanchez seems to have unsettled the team rather than enhance it, especially regarding Pogba. Luckily they only have Chelsea up next, so I have one more game to sharpen my axe.

        Morning,

weighing up some transfers. Any thoughts appreciaed.

        2 FT 0.6 ITB

        now thinking Something like

        b) OTA-Sanchez-Kun-DCL > VVD-Siggy/mhyki-Kane - Firm (-8)

        or some how keeping kun.

        c) Ota-sanchez-DCL > mawson-5.7>kane
