Captain Poll – Gameweek 30

While tonight’s Selhurst Park encounter concludes Gameweek 29, we are already looking ahead to the next set of fixtures with the launch of our latest Captain Poll.

Spurs frontman Harry Kane (12.9) has had to settle for second place to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (10.5) in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) armband race in each of the last three Gameweeks.

But that may well change this time around. While Spurs travel to face a Bournemouth defence that has conceded more shots (99) than any side in the last six Gameweeks, Salah will face a testing trip to Old Trafford.

Kane’s form certainly warrants top billing. Over his last seven league run outs, he has found the net six times and racked up more shots (38), efforts in the box (29), attempts on target (20) and big chances (12) than any player.

His supporting cast of midfielders, Christian Eriksen (9.4), Dele Alli (8.9) and Son Heung-min (8.0) may also garner interest, the latter, in particular, following his weekend brace at home to Huddersfield. Eriksen’s three assists and goal over his last six away days also impresses.

Even though Liverpool take on the league’s meanest home defence, Salah’s impressive away record should ensure that he still mounts a serious challenge to Kane at the summit of our poll.

In front of their own fans, Jose Mourinho’s charges have conceded a league-low six goals and earned a record ten clean sheets. Meanwhile, on the road, the Egyptian has scored 11 and fired 20 shots on target, with only Kane (13 and 23) bettering those tallies.

Salah’s team-mate Roberto Firmino (9.4)’s seven goals and four assists away from Anfield make him another Reds asset set to attract attention, as do Sadio Mane’s (9.4) five goals in his last three run outs in all competitions.

Voters will be keeping a close eye on events at Selhurst Park tonight when Manchester United take on Crystal Palace before considering handing the armband to their assets.

Romelu Lukaku (11.2) will be among those most keenly watched after his recent return to form, with two goals and an assist in his last three league matches.

Interest in Arsenal assets may be muted this week as they head into a home match with Watford in awful form. Nevertheless, the Gunners boast strong home scoring form – only Man City (51 to 36) have found the net more often in front of their own fans.

Mesut Ozil (9.3)’s five assists and three successful strikes at the Emirates makes him an intriguing armband candidate. Patrick-Emerick Aubameyang (10.4) is another, after scoring his second goal in four Gameweeks against Brighton yesterday. His ineligibility for Arsenal’s Europa League campaign also means he will be free of rest and rotation worries.

Another London side in the doldrums is Chelsea, who have lost to Bournemouth and Watford over their last five league matches and failed to register a single on target shot in their away loss to Manchester City yesterday.

However, a home tie against Crystal Palace could prove far more profitable for Antonio Conte’s troops. Over their last four road trips, the Eagles have failed to keep a clean sheet and have shipped nine goals, with only West Ham and Everton conceding more often away from home over that timeframe.

After Chelsea’s poor attacking display yesterday, it seems likely that striker Alvaro Morata (10.4) will earn a recall. The Spaniard is currently his side’s top scorer at home in the league, with five goals.

Eden Hazard (10.6) is another strong differential captaincy candidate among the Blues assets. He was again frustrated by a false nine role at the Etihad Stadium but should be played up with either Morata or Giroud against Roy Hodgson’s side. The Belgian has three goals and an assist over his last four matches.

Manchester City’s sensational title charge should ensure that their players are also factors in the latest poll, even though they visit a Stoke backline that has shown impressive resilience of late. Over the last six Gameweeks, the Potters have earned three clean sheets and conceded just four times, the third-best record over that period.

With rotation anticipated for the midweek Champions League clash against FC Basel, though, City’s big-hitters could all profit at the bet365.

Should Gabriel Jesus start against the Swiss outfit, Sergio Aguero’s (11.9) looks a likely name on the teamsheet next Monday – he has eight goals in his last six starts.

David Silva (7.9) is another to impress recently, with a goal and assist across his last two starts, as has Leroy Sane (8.5), who delivered a 13-point return in his last road trip, against Arsenal in Gameweek 28.

The German is currently this week’s most popular transfer target, attracting 39,000 new FPL managers.

Meanwhile, Bernardo Silva (7.4)’s two goals and assist over the last four Gameweeks could even see some votes go his way. However, should Raheem Sterling (8.7) return from injury, the Portuguese could be one City player who may well succumb to rotation.

Riyad Mahrez (8.7)’s last-minute equaliser against Bournemouth on Saturday garners momentum for Leicester City’s trip to basement-dwellers West Brom. That free kick was the fourth time he had found the net in his last seven league starts; meanwhile, the Baggies have shipped a record 13 goals over the last six Gameweeks.

Another who may attract votes is West Ham’s Marko Arnautovic (7.0), who takes on a Burnley side that last kept a clean sheet in Gameweek 21. The Austrian has excelled for the Hammers with David Moyes at the helm, scoring seven times and assisting a further four goals over his last 11 run outs.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 30 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Going for Alonso plus 4 cheapies in defence on my GW32 WC. Will have Simpson, Lowton, Fernandez as 3 of them.

Who is the best cheapie with a double to accompany them? Dummet?

Is this sufficient for gw31 (-4)

    Coleman - Robertson - Daniels/PVA
    Salah(c) - Walcott - Mili - Richarlison
    King - Firmino

    Also:

    PVA or Daniels?

I see alot of people saying WC Gw 32 over Gw 33 because of the fixtures but are they really that bad that you would show your rivals your WC team earlier then the doubles?!

Bournemouth - Away at Watford, doesn't seem too bad
Watford - home to bournemouth, same as above
Liverpool - away at palace but people would be keeping those assets anyway
Palace - Home to liverpool - dodgy fixture but consensus seems to be that not many people are having them anyway
Hud - Away at Newcastle, not a bad fixture at all
Everton - Home to city - dodgy fixture, would need to remove everton players
West Brom - not many players being mentioned but home to Burnley if did go for them
Stoke - Away to arsenal, on paper a dodgy fixture but we all know the form issues. I'd still say its a bad one overall.

So that being said it looks like Everton & stoke assets are the only ones who are being mentioned to acquire for 31, that have dodgy in 32. Surely nothing at 2 transfers wouldn't more or less (unless loading up with 3 from each...) fix if it meant keeping your WC back to just before the double?

    Thoughts?

Trouble is barely any people will have 2 FTs after GW31 so you could only feasibly remove one player. Many have two Everton for example and a bunch of other players from terrible teams so it makes sense to just WC.

    3. Pegboy

I'll postpone to GW33, which is the reason why I'll only have 6 for GW31 (3 LIV, Shaq, keeper and 1 Hudd def).

Agreed. I'm holding off til GW33.

The trick is to not go overboard with GW31 assets and holding current assets with favourable GW32 fixtures.

I'm going into GW31 with 5 attackers (Salah, Mane, Firmino, Choupers, King) which should be enough, and holding Kane, Mahrez, and Arni for their fixtures in 32.

      Great post.

Ive been thinking the same. I can put out a GW32 team of:

      Adrian
      VVD / Otamendi / Jones
      Salah / Eriksen / Mihki / Mahrez / Arnie
      Kane / Bobby F

Hardly seems worth spunking he WC and showing my handto the ML's for that

    Current team:
    Ryan Krul
    Alonso Ogbonna Naughton Bauer Rangel
    Salah Mane Sterling Shaqiri Mili
    Kane Firmino Vardy

    2 FT's

    Plan:
    GW30: Lossl -> Ryan
GW31: Coleman -> Naughton, Mounie or King -> Vardy

    Hi!
I preparing for gw31 but not sure on this. Have sterling and still Loftus-Cheek. Sterling propably will play but RLC not, and have jones, ogbonna, van dijk on bench.
What is the best solution this week?

    1) buy a defender like Zanka or Aké
    2) buy a cheap midfielder like Ibe or Van la Parra

after gw31 a wildcard coming of course

  18. Tosun & Aubameyang's surprise bonus awards explained

    • 10 Years
    6 years, 1 month ago

    Hi all

Inspired a bit by the questions I've seen over the weekend on BPS I carried on from where I left off on our most recent podcast and looked into how two of the biggest sore points of this weekend (Auba+Tosun) wound up on all 3 BPS.
Here's a post (I've also put it on twitter) on what I found:

    Aubameyang v Brighton

Played over 60 mins: 6 BPS
Forward scoring a goal: 24 BPS
Two chances created: 2 BPS (1/CC)
    Successful dribbles: 1 BPS
    Successful tackle: 2BPS (net +1)
    Tackled x2: -2BPS
    Total: 33BPS

    Tosun v Burnley

    Played over 60 mins: 6BPS
    Forward scoring a goal: 24BPS
Two big chances created: 6BPS (3/BCC)
    Two chances created: 2BPS (1/CC)
    Successful tackle: 2BPS (net +2)
    1 attempt off target: -1BPS
    Tackled: -1BPS
    Total: 38BPS

Data: FFS + FPL rules for BPS allocation

    Notes:

    - Aubameyang had 2 shots, both on target, in the match meaning no penalty for shots off target; Tosun had 3 but only had 1 off target.
    - Aubameyang was 1 pass off the 30 pass threshold for additional BPS, Tosun 2.
    - Aubameyang is also recorded as being dispossessed twice, and Tosun once, but there doesn’t appear to have been a reduction for this. Maybe it’s the difference between “being tackled” and “losing possession”; the former is penalised by the BPS system, but the latter is not. This needs clearing up.
    - Aubameyang and Tosun both seems examples of how a player can be rewarded by the system for doing relatively little in game: to the eye, both didn’t contribute much outside their goal in the games they played in. But what they did do, they did well without any penalising which means that he got all 3 bonus.
    - This furthers the idea that players who are actively involved and do take risks to make things happen are penalised by the system, whereas those who offer relatively little do well
    - I suspect OFPL will publish a reasoning post again to explain what happened. As we said on our latest pod, just show us the data and it might stop the weekly bonus points controversy flaring up! Community members shouldn't have to go through the information to guesstimate how the players have been allocated bonus: show us your working, OFPL!
    - If I've got anything wrong above, it further proves my point perhaps that the controversies that seem to arise each week can be fixed by simply showing us how the BPS are allocated 🙂

I think it works to some extent; a lot of the anger at BPS is just not knowing the system and how it works - the rules are publicly available.
However the implementation of how they explain BPS needs to be improved, and I think also (I've got a piece in the works here) it could be used to make other changes in the game 🙂

                See post below with Jonty.

I also think that if they reallocated some of the "BPS buckets" they could bring defensive midfielders into the game. There are very few areas in which the BPS system benefits DMs right now - but if they tweaked it they could bring them into the game

I like the objectivity of BPS over the man in the stand....but as this shows there needs to be tweaking. In both matches there were far better players - but I suspect as they may well have been tackled or shot off target too much they missed out.

Lowton and Barnes for example were more worthy of the 3 bonus ...and Murray, Duffy and Dunk far more worthy.

I agree if FPL is to maintain an objective route it needs to do that 100%....get rid of the big chances for a start - that's subjective as to what is a big chance or just a chance. And show the full data clearly.

I hope there will be improvements as it doesn't look good for a game to award bonus to two so underserving players.

I agree with this - we tend to take goals/assists in game as an exemplar of influence over a game a player has had as FPL players, which can sometimes mean, for example, a player who is wasteful all game to those in the stand but scores is seen as having been "robbed" by the community 🙂

I think big chances needs a tweak, I also think shots off target penalisation needs to be removed and replaced with "losing possession" as a negative. SoffT I think is the biggest culprit for penalising players who are taking risks and trying to affect the game, whereas losing possession at the moment (arguably a huge negative in today's game) is not properly penalised and perhaps should be.

Showing the data clearly is SUCH a low hanging fruit for them - would immediately sort out perceptions of opacity

Agree chances v big chances is too subjective.

Is your second paragraph not contradictory? Shooting off target is an example of trying to affect the game, but it is also an example of losing possession (as play restarts with a goal kick). Similarly, trying to thread a through ball is also an example of trying to affect the game, but is also an example of losing possession. These are one and the same, no?

Hmm yeah I was probably writing with crass negligence 🙂 perhaps they would be coded as mutually exclusive actions, though they'd need to clearly distinguish what is what (i.e. establishing what is a SoffT and what is simply losing possession) to ensure no "double jeopardy" happens.

Haha not at all! Possibly yeah. Is losing possession not accounted for in the BPS on pass completion percentages?

Yes, as far as I understand it: you don't get a direct negative impact for poor pass completion, you indirectly lose out as you don't get given BPS!

Jonty, off topic this one but whilst you are here, I watched carefully all the highlights from. Can you please explain to me why on the third Swansea goal were no assist added to Ayew? He headed the ball on target which was parried away by WHU goalie which was straight after tapped in a net by King. I have seen this happened quite a lot this season and I am still very confused how some assists are given and some not. Thanks

One for Mark to answer perhaps.

I've no idea as you say the header was on target - or so it looked so ordinarily that would have seen an assist given for King's goal.

Doesnt look any better to not give bonus points to Kane vs Arsenal or Salah vs West Ham

The bonus system is just wrong. It’s too mathematical.

It always seems that players suffer more from playing 90 mins. Midfielders who get subbed off after 60 have a tendency to do better BPS-wise than their teammates who stay on for the 90 (as long, of course, as those that stay on don't score/assist in the meantime). I would argue that this shouldn't be the case.

We certainly saw this with Tomkins, too - the threshold being 60 mins for the additional bps for mins on field means that the final 30 only matters if they do something active going forward. Keeping a CS is also huge for defenders (12)

      Cheers for this.

The one change I think they should make is to add 3bps to any player from the winning team (60+mins played). They could also -3 BPS for players on the losing team.

This would increase the chances of the MOTM being on the winning team, which I think should be the case.

Noooo! It was that way before with a previous version of the bps rules (EA sports index or somewhat). It was terrible.
A player could be the best player on the pitch by a mile and a half, but since he lost he had no chance of a bonus.

IMO bonus points should be awarded for positive contributions not already covered by the points system. So no bonus building for goals, assists and clean sheets, but for shots, chances created, interceptions and so on. It could even give defensive midfielders a fighting chance of being relevant to FPL.

A big yes to this. Also, talking of the old EA Rules - one thing I did agree with was that penalties had a lower effect on the bonus than scoring a goal from open play (I think it was half as many points). A forward can be absolute garbage for the whole game but manages to score a penalty (which he probably had nothing to do with earning) and he gets 3 BPs.

Provided he scores and does little else, yes. If he misses big chances (-3bps each time) or takes shots off target (-1 each time) he will lose BPS. Tosun is one I noted a while ago (http://whogottheassist.com/prospecting-the-prospects-cenk-tosun/) loved to take a pile of shots at Besiktas, so you have to hope he remains clinical / Everton's supply line remains scrappy.

Great post (and discussion on your last pod btw). It seems to me that in the case of strikers and attacking midfielders in particular, clinical and "safe" players are rewarded in BPS over the mavericks and the risk takers. I guess whether this is right or not is down to opinion and which footballers you appreciate.

I think to make it fairer to all players, a shot on target should possibly be worth 1 bps point, at least then it equalises the negative effect of a shot off target.

Do you have a quick way I can review all of these? I guess 282 pertains to the number the fixture has been allocated, so next week would I just do 291-300 as the matches to be reviewed?

Yeah, the ID number on the end is the fixture number, I'll be integrating this style BPS table of data into my main bonus site - http://anewpla.net/fpl/live/

So in theory next weekend you could just go to the above link and click on the fixture you're interested with and then click on whatever link I add to the page, probably something like "View detailed BAPS info" which will open the table of data.

I should have mentioned, because I've only just created this and have been refining/fixing issues the last couple of days, the gameweek is hard set in the code, so if you try to view a game right now that didn't have this gameweek then the table will be blank.

When I do what I said above and add a link to the main bonus site you'll be able to view any game fixture from the past in full

The EA SPORTS Player Performance Index was introduced for the 2011/12 season, to replace the man in the stand.

The new Bonus Points System (BPS) replaced this for 2013/14, with data supplied by OPTA..

For 2014/15, the previous BPS points were tripled throughout; successful dribbles were now rewarded; goals conceded no longer resulted in negative BPS; Errors that led to attempts on goal, Being tackled, Conceding fouls, Being caught offside and Shots off target now counted individually instead of only in threes; and Total clearances, blocks and interceptions and Recoveries now counted in threes rather than in eights.
These changes resulted in fewer cases of multiple players being awarded the same BPS points, especially in boring 0-0 draws, but they also resulted in goalkeepers losing almost all their bonus points, whilst the leading fullbacks were the main winners.

The BPS system was tweaked again for 2015/16.
BPS points for each save by a goalkeeper were increased from 1 to 2.
A BPS point was awarded for every 2 clearances, blocks and interceptions instead of for every 3.
BPS points for each successful tackle were increased from 1 to 2.
BPS points for pass completion were reduced from 3 to 2 for 70-79%, 6 to 4 for 80-89% and 9 to 6 for 90%+.

There were no changes to the BPS system for 2016/17 or for 2017/18.

          Jarvish replied
"I thought they made some tweaks for this year too (wasn't blocking shots made more valuable or something like that after the BAPS kept going to the defenders for teams dominating 0-0s when they did nothing as opposed to the defenders who worked their arses off defending the clean sheet)?"
before it was lost because I had replaced my original version of the above comment to correct a minor error.

I think the changes he mentions were the ones made for 2014/15 and 2015/16, so weren't new this season.

wow. thorough reply. i started playing 2011-12, so havent a scooby about man in the stand, but i do remember the EA PPI. I like the fact that over the years since the BPS was implemented in 2014, theyve kept upgrading and a similar tweak is probably all thats required again.

The man in the stand was a bit of a joke.
The man at each game made an entirely subjective award of 3, 2 and 1 bonus points to the players he considered the best three in the match.
Some of them regularly awarded bonus points to their own favourite players, such as Richard Dunne and Charlie Adam.
On a few occasions they even awarded bonuses to players who had not even taken part in the match!

Thanks for this! Think they need to add a threshold for involvement or touches if you start maybe.

On another note, how did Duffy get the assist for Dunk's goal? Looked like a Cech punch to me.

        Pleasure.

Yes it was very close - I think Duffy headed it out of Cech's grasp which meant he got a touch on the ball. If he headed Cech's hand and the ball moved then no assist.
I remember they took quite a while to give it yesterday which was probably them deliberating over what had happened!

    10. Still Unsure
        6 years, 1 month ago

As I highlighted over the weekend, I think what this shows is that maybe 24 points for a forward scoring a goal.
        Auba - 24/33 (73%)
        Tosun - 24/38 (63%)

So I get that they 'didn't make any mistakes', but one action over 90 minutes has given them maximum baps, which I don't think is right.

For the blank would you rather have:

      A) Coleman + Milivojevic
      B) Ake + Shaqiri

What are people's thoughts on using the Free Hit for GW31? I've still got all my chips + wildcard, so it could make sense to use it..

Most are saving free hit for GW35 so a wildcard in GW32 or GW33 can focus solely on DGW players and dont have to worry about the one remaining blank

Depends how many you have for GW31 already. If you have all the high ownership players i.e triple Liverpool and Shaqiri without hits then id save the free hit chip

Is GW35 when we expect there to be the main DGW? I'd prefer to wildcard before and use my bench boost for that, so might possible do the free hit for GW31..

Depends on your team. 6 or 7 decent attacking players would mean keeping the Free Hit in the back pocket, for me.

People say if you have 3 Pool's, then save FH for 35..

Is there an easy way to see what chips a rival has used?

I can see wildcard dates under transfer history but nothing on the other chips

gameweek history. if all you can see is the WC then they may have all chips remaining

Any suggestions for this GW? 1 FT, 2.0 ITB

I'm playing my FH for GW31 so if I don't use the transfer I'd lose it. But nothing really stands out

      DDG Elliot
      Ota Mee Fernandez Duffy Kenny
      Salah Sterling Mahrez Son Milivojevic
      Kane Firmino Quaner

For gw31 I currently have only:

      Hennessy
      VVD, Francis, Martina
      Salah, Walcott
      Firmino, Wilson

8 should be enough but not the best picks. I have one ft should I be prioritising getting more gw31 players or looking ahead.

I'd save and try and get Mane and Shaq next week if you still have a wildcard

If you have WC, look for GW31 players. If not, look ahead.

With 3.1 itb I was looking at possibly saving this gw and doing Maguire and Kenedy to Schindler and Shaq. Shaq has terrible fixtures though.

      My actual team is:

      Popo - Foster
      Hegazi - Davies - Smalling - Robertson - Ward
      Salah - Shaqiri - Gross - Deulofeu - Milivojevic
      Lukaku - Kane - Firmino

      FT: 1
      ITB: 2.0

      my idea is:

      1) GM 30: Smalling, Deulofeu --> Schindler, Doucourè - 4
      2) GM 31: Lukaku or Kane --> forward?
      3) GM 32: return lukaku or kane
      4) GM 33: WC.

      my doubts are:
      1) instead deulofeu who i can keep?
      2) for GW 31 who the best choice in attack?

For GW 31 i'll can play:

      Foster
      Hegazi - Robertson - Schindler
      Salah - Shaqiri - Doucourè - Milivojevic
      Firmino - XXX

      Any suggestion is very appreciated.

      Thanks,
      Matteo.
