Captain Poll – Gameweek 30

While tonight’s Selhurst Park encounter concludes Gameweek 29, we are already looking ahead to the next set of fixtures with the launch of our latest Captain Poll.

Spurs frontman Harry Kane (12.9) has had to settle for second place to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (10.5) in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) armband race in each of the last three Gameweeks.

But that may well change this time around. While Spurs travel to face a Bournemouth defence that has conceded more shots (99) than any side in the last six Gameweeks, Salah will face a testing trip to Old Trafford.

Kane’s form certainly warrants top billing. Over his last seven league run outs, he has found the net six times and racked up more shots (38), efforts in the box (29), attempts on target (20) and big chances (12) than any player.

His supporting cast of midfielders, Christian Eriksen (9.4), Dele Alli (8.9) and Son Heung-min (8.0) may also garner interest, the latter, in particular, following his weekend brace at home to Huddersfield. Eriksen’s three assists and goal over his last six away days also impresses.

Even though Liverpool take on the league’s meanest home defence, Salah’s impressive away record should ensure that he still mounts a serious challenge to Kane at the summit of our poll.

In front of their own fans, Jose Mourinho’s charges have conceded a league-low six goals and earned a record ten clean sheets. Meanwhile, on the road, the Egyptian has scored 11 and fired 20 shots on target, with only Kane (13 and 23) bettering those tallies.

Salah’s team-mate Roberto Firmino (9.4)’s seven goals and four assists away from Anfield make him another Reds asset set to attract attention, as do Sadio Mane’s (9.4) five goals in his last three run outs in all competitions.

Voters will be keeping a close eye on events at Selhurst Park tonight when Manchester United take on Crystal Palace before considering handing the armband to their assets.

Romelu Lukaku (11.2) will be among those most keenly watched after his recent return to form, with two goals and an assist in his last three league matches.

Interest in Arsenal assets may be muted this week as they head into a home match with Watford in awful form. Nevertheless, the Gunners boast strong home scoring form – only Man City (51 to 36) have found the net more often in front of their own fans.

Mesut Ozil (9.3)’s five assists and three successful strikes at the Emirates makes him an intriguing armband candidate. Patrick-Emerick Aubameyang (10.4) is another, after scoring his second goal in four Gameweeks against Brighton yesterday. His ineligibility for Arsenal’s Europa League campaign also means he will be free of rest and rotation worries.

Another London side in the doldrums is Chelsea, who have lost to Bournemouth and Watford over their last five league matches and failed to register a single on target shot in their away loss to Manchester City yesterday.

However, a home tie against Crystal Palace could prove far more profitable for Antonio Conte’s troops. Over their last four road trips, the Eagles have failed to keep a clean sheet and have shipped nine goals, with only West Ham and Everton conceding more often away from home over that timeframe.

After Chelsea’s poor attacking display yesterday, it seems likely that striker Alvaro Morata (10.4) will earn a recall. The Spaniard is currently his side’s top scorer at home in the league, with five goals.

Eden Hazard (10.6) is another strong differential captaincy candidate among the Blues assets. He was again frustrated by a false nine role at the Etihad Stadium but should be played up with either Morata or Giroud against Roy Hodgson’s side. The Belgian has three goals and an assist over his last four matches.

Manchester City’s sensational title charge should ensure that their players are also factors in the latest poll, even though they visit a Stoke backline that has shown impressive resilience of late. Over the last six Gameweeks, the Potters have earned three clean sheets and conceded just four times, the third-best record over that period.

With rotation anticipated for the midweek Champions League clash against FC Basel, though, City’s big-hitters could all profit at the bet365.

Should Gabriel Jesus start against the Swiss outfit, Sergio Aguero’s (11.9) looks a likely name on the teamsheet next Monday – he has eight goals in his last six starts.

David Silva (7.9) is another to impress recently, with a goal and assist across his last two starts, as has Leroy Sane (8.5), who delivered a 13-point return in his last road trip, against Arsenal in Gameweek 28.

The German is currently this week’s most popular transfer target, attracting 39,000 new FPL managers.

Meanwhile, Bernardo Silva (7.4)’s two goals and assist over the last four Gameweeks could even see some votes go his way. However, should Raheem Sterling (8.7) return from injury, the Portuguese could be one City player who may well succumb to rotation.

Riyad Mahrez (8.7)’s last-minute equaliser against Bournemouth on Saturday garners momentum for Leicester City’s trip to basement-dwellers West Brom. That free kick was the fourth time he had found the net in his last seven league starts; meanwhile, the Baggies have shipped a record 13 goals over the last six Gameweeks.

Another who may attract votes is West Ham’s Marko Arnautovic (7.0), who takes on a Burnley side that last kept a clean sheet in Gameweek 21. The Austrian has excelled for the Hammers with David Moyes at the helm, scoring seven times and assisting a further four goals over his last 11 run outs.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 30 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

    Good Plan?

    De Gea
    VVD* Vert Alonso
    Sterling Shaq* Salah* Mahrez
    Kane Firmino* Wilson*

    Subs: Elliot, Ogbona, Obiang, Mbemba

    GW30: Mbemba to Schindler
GW31: Sterling to Walcott/ Stanislas and maybe Vert to Coleman (-4)

Will give me 8 players for 31...

      Hello maggot.
Hmm not looking too terrible - I'd be tempted by Rangel out for a Huddersfield defender to up your 31 quota, then maybe do Arnie and getting another defender in that week.

Kept hold of Sterling in the hope he would start at Chelsea and retain price. I want to keep him for DGW34.

    I have O ITB, 1 FT.

I can sell him at 8.4 mil. (bought for 8.1mil, CV 8.7mill). Not planning to FH in GW31 so I can:

    a) Hold, hope he returns for Stoke. Keep him for 32/33 wildcard and hope his price doesn’t go below 8.4.
    b) Sell to a GW31 player now (if so, Shaqiri perhaps?) and buy back for WC hopefully at 8.4 or less

    Lossl, Pope
    Dunk, Maguire, VVD, Ogbonna, Martina
    Salah, KDB, Gross, Lewis Cook
    Kane, Aguero, Wilson

    Cheers chaps.

Is free hitting for GW 31 the best idea?

Personally I think so, the main conundrum people are having is FH31 vs FH35. The reason I think FH31 wins out is because there are more teams playing in GW 35 than in GW 31. On top of that, more top teams are playing in that gameweek.

Liverpool and Arsenal are definitely playing, Man City will play (unless Swansea beat Spurs), Chelsea may play if they beat Leicester. That leaves 6 or maybe 7 fixtures in GW35 vs the 4 fixtures (all with weaker teams) in GW31.

Therefore FH31 seems like a better idea as you don't have to cripple your team in the upcoming GWs and can have an optimum team for GW31. In GW35 you will likely already have the strong assets of the teams who will play.

    My opinion anyway, thoughts?

I think 31 is preferred to take on the chin because there aren't many good options to bring in. Having 8 players won't be a huge loss vs having 11 🙂

Can see the logic both ways though!

      1. Holding Matip
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 1 month ago

Yeah but having to field a semi decent side for GW 31 means you take unnecessary hits, or you have a weak team for the GWs prior to 31. To get those 8 players you will have missed out on points in the previous weeks (in general). Considering most are of the opinion that 31 will be a low scoring week with Salah as C, having 3 extra players could give you a distinct advantage over 8, whether it be a goal or a clean sheet, and see your overall rank jump as a result.

With the free hit in gwk 35 though, you can wildcard 100% focusing on the dgwks without having to think about the blank. Nearly everyone will have the same players in gwk 31 with or without a free hit. Plus everyone will captain Salah

      1. Holding Matip
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 1 month ago

FH31 would imply you're already thinking ahead to the first DGW, as you will have those players already (hence the FH), and then you can wildcard for the second DGW

Yeah I agree everyone will have the same players, but the opportunity cost of having those weaker players for the previous weeks will have seen you get less points than if you had the stronger players and ignore the blank

It’s a bit late now for most as we’ve committed to it. Looking back it could’ve worked but we won’t know till it’s all over. The free hit GW35 allows you to plan for both DGWs with no worries regarding the blanks

Isn’t it a bit late in the day to be thinking this ?
I mean we should have to decided 1 or the other a few weeks back really

Personally think fh chip is best saved to 35 or even 37
I also think it was entirely possible to get both a good lead up to 31 and a good 31 team

Saying that nothing wrong with the other approach , play the weeks as they come and fh 31 ....either could work out best

      1. Holding Matip
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 1 month ago

Yeah I agree with you 100%, can argue either case, you would assume that trying to field a team for 31 would imply you've missed out on points in the prior GWs. Ignoring the blanks in 31, you would have the players required for the first DGW (as they don't play in 31), and you can FH31. GW35 is easier to plan for as stronger teams play and more games are on, and then you have your wildcard for the second DGW.

But I agree with either scenario, just expressing my opinion on it.

Are Chelsea and Arsenal assets going to bounce back in the upcoming good fixtures? Are people avoiding over their poor form or expecting a revival with Chelsea hunting the top 4.

Looking at Mkhitaryan and Willian myself in the mid-price bracket.

Not a bad shout. There's such a quality gap between the Top 6 and everyone else that you are probably wise to assume that even an out of form Chelsea and Arsenal are still favourites against lower-table opposition at home. Away from home might be different, though - the smaller clubs smell blood.

I can see Chelsea going on a run. Both teams are due DGW’s also. Arsenal are home to Watford, Stoke, Southampton and West Ham in their next 5 with an away trip to Newcastle. Chelsea have Palace, Spurs, West Ham and Huddersfield at home with away trips to Southampton and Swansea in their next 6. Must be points in these fixtures you would assume.

Well it's a toss-up between GW35 and GW37 for me. For those who've burned their TC, then 37 is definitely a better option for the FH than 35. But given that you're in a similar position as me in terms of having all chips intact, when then would you play the TC and BB?

      I'm looking at WC33, BB34, FH35, TC37

    Adrian. Elliot
BDavis. Mee. Van Dijk. Maguire. Hunemeier.
    Shaqiri. Salah. Son. Sterling. Walcott.
    Wilson. Kane. Firmino

    2FT 1.2m ITB

    What moves would you recommend.
Was thinking on elliot to lossl, and rolling over the other FT.
Will have to keep an eye on sterling and son this week though.

I would go Holebas over Janmaat. On corners and free kicks. Only real chance they will have to score at anfield.

Lets say its 35 and we use the Free Hit... whait is our main advantage vs those that dont have Free Hit... ( which are the teams that have nice 34 and 37 but dont have 35 is the main focus?)

In that case I'd maybe move Alonso on this week as he is too expensive to sit on bench for 2 gws

      Elliot to Lossl
      McBurnie/Kun to King/Wilson
      Lingard to VDP/Pritchy
Then look at one hit, to bring in one of Siggy, Wally, Coleman or Ake (for Son or Mee)

Thanks. I had Huddersfield/Bournemouth players earmarked to replace the first three you mentioned so at least we are in agreement. Will monitor Everton players this week though could be a good week to get one.

    Need help clarifying something.

It says playing the free hit chip means you do not stack the transfer over to the next week but...

If I make the transfer after the game week 30 deadline for game week 31, then I play the free hit chip will I keep this player yes?

Or will it maybe block me from playing the free hit chip

I plan on bringing ederson in for game week 31 (so I have him in game week 32) but I want to play the free hit chip and then I hopefully won’t lose the transfer

My thinking on the free hit in gwk 31/35 is that just about everyone who is taking the game serious is going to have 3xLiverpool (defender/Mane, Salah (c) & Firmino), probably Shaqiri, Walcott, Huddersfield defender, Bournemouth defender & maybe attacker.

There's not a huge advantage to be gained by free hitting if it means you might get one or two extra palace/Huddersfield/Bournemouth players in.

When wildcarding in gwk 32/33 you put all eggs in the dgwk basket without having to plan around a blank gwk with a gwk 35 free hit.

It's a no brainer for me unless you are genuinely stranded with about 3 players in gwk 31

That's what I'm doing, only regret is that I went for VVD instead of Mane as my 3rd Pool. Worth free hitting to bring in what is likely an additional 3 x 2pts? Not for me.

Smith has more attacking threat so yes but if money is an issue then Francis is decent for a cs punt

    Courtois
    Maguire VVD Mee
    Mahrez Salah Sterling Mkhitaryan Doucoure
    Kane Firmino

    Foster Wilson Daniels Mariappa

As it is I'll have 8 for the GW31. Hopefully Sterling is back to fitness AND back in the team.
