Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 31

With just four matches taking place in Gameweek 31, our latest Captain Poll is without an array of regular favourites for the Fantasy Premier League armband.

This should ensure that Mohamed Salah (10.6) dominates voting as Liverpool entertain a Watford side that has just one clean sheet in their last six away days.

The winger last failed to deliver attacking returns at Anfield back in Gameweek 17, while, at home, only Sergio Aguero has scored more goals than the Egyptian (15 to 13), who is the top midfielder in home matches terms of shots (72), penalty area shots (54) and attempts on target (33).

Owned by 61%, Salah looks certain to be the most popular captain pick once again, having surrendered that status to Harry Kane for Gameweek 30.

As the only top-eight side taking part in this limited set of fixtures, Salah’s team-mates, Roberto Firmino (9.4) and Sadio Mane (9.4), could emerge as his main challengers.

Over the last eight Gameweeks, Firmino has amassed four goals and three assists and is this week’s most popular transfer target, with more than 45,000 new owners.

Mane is also in fine form, with two goals and an assist in his last three domestic encounters, in addition to a recent Champions League treble against Porto.

The Merseysiders’ centre-half Virgil van Dijk (5.6) may also votes as a differential. He has recorded nine goal attempts and two clean sheets from his six league matches for Liverpool.

For those seeking further alternatives, Gameweek 31 offers up an array of intriguing options, particularly among Bournemouth’s attack.

Eddie Howe’s side have one of the most favourable fixtures, thanks to a home clash against the league’s bottom side West Brom. The Baggies were humbled 4-1 at home by Leicester at the weekend and, across their last six matches, have conceded a league-high 16 goals.

Junior Stanislas (5.9) seems the man most likely to exploit the visitors’ frailties, having supplied three goals and two assists in seven since returning from injury. The winger has started each of the last six Gameweeks and has registered more shots (22), penalty area efforts (10), attempts on target (eight) and key passes (eight) than any team-mate in that run.

Josh King (7.0) may also pick up interest with two goals in his last three starts, particularly if he fully recovers from the neck injury that saw his role in yesterday’s 4-1 home defeat to Spurs reduced to just a 23-minute cameo from the bench.

That heavy loss to the London side, coupled with the Cherries concession of a record 99 shots over the last six Gameweeks, may tempt some to consider punting on Baggies striker Solomon Rondon (6.0). The Venezuelan has scored three in his last six appearances in all competitions.

Crystal Palace’s trip to Huddersfield Town presents further differential captaincy candidates with the chance of strong returns. With no clean sheets on the road since Gameweek 18, the Eagles defence may struggle to keep the hosts at bay.

For the hosts, striker Steve Mounie (5.8) looks the main attraction, with two goals and an assist over the last four Gameweeks. During that period, he has fired 12 close penalty area shots – ranked fourth overall and second only to Salah’s 13 among the Gameweek 31 contingent.

Terriers’ winger Rajiv van La Parra (4.8)’s two goals and seven shots in the box over his last four has also impressed.

Among Roy Hodgson’s troops, Wilfried Zaha’s (6.8) return to action has been well timed.

The winger notched an assist off the bench against Chelsea at the weekend, which was his first appearance since suffering an injury ahead of Gameweek 27. Four goals and a further three assists across the season may also tempt voters.

Given that Zaha was introduced in that Blues clash at the expense of striker Christian Benteke (7.6), interest in the Belgian is likely to be muted. However, with attacking returns in seven of the last nine matches, the Belgian could profit against a defence that has shipped eight goals in their last four at home.

Eagles defender Patrick van Aanholt (5.1) may also poll well with two goals in as many matches. Among defenders over the last four Gameweeks, he has fired off a record four attempts on target.

The underlying statistics suggest Everton may struggle to find the net against a resilient Stoke side at the Bet365 stadium.

Over their last four home encounters, the Potters have two clean sheets and conceded just two goals. Meanwhile, across their last quartet of road trips, the Toffees have the second worst record in terms of shots on target (eight) and have scored just twice, with only Watford and West Brom recording fewer over that timeframe.

Nevertheless, with a goal in each of his last two run-outs, including a trip to Burnley, Everton’s Cenk Tosun (6.7) looks to have finally found form since joining in January. Given this upturn in his fortunes, the Turkish striker is likely to be the top choice for those keen to captain a Toffees asset.

If fit, Theo Walcott can’t be overlooked. Since arriving at Goodison, he’s produced more shots (13), efforts in the box (ten) and attempts on target (six) than any team-mate.

For the hosts, playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri (6.3) looks the key target, with three goals in his last four starts. On the road Sam Allardyce’s backline has been extremely generous, shipping 12 times over their last four away days, an unwelcome record they share with West Ham.

Tonight’s final Gameweek 30 clash, between Stoke and Manchester City, will give voters a further chance to monitor Potters assets.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 31 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Not defending what Carragher did, just asking why everything has to be a sacking offence, why deny the man a wage.

There tends to be a line though in most occupations. Spitting at a child tends to cross that line in pretty much all jobs.

Its filthy either way of course. But my question was more of an intelligence thing. I mean lets say you were a very famous dirty scum bag and you feel like spitting on a little girl, but you can see someone pointing a phone right at you, wouldn't you maybe choose not to spit.
Just both disgusting but utterly stupid too.

What would be your dream XI for Gameweek 31.....and please give reasons.

      Here's mine

Butland – top for minutes per save. Plus Stoke’s home defence among the more resilient (obvs except when City come to visit tonight)

Van Aanholt – could be chance of double digit returns
Baines/Coleman – still undecided which one– both could deliver attacking points – both looking good on their returns.
Schindler – If Huddersfield can keep a clean sheet this is the man who will get bonus.

      Salah – captain fantastic
      Mane – in form
Stanislas – Bou man in form and up against PL’s worst side
Shaqiri – Stoke’s man in form and Everton are leaky away.

Firmino – You can never have too much Liverpool attack
Mounie – Huddersfield’s best chance of a goal
Josh King – the Baggies are just so awful a Cherries attacking double up looks sensible

Yeah this is pretty spot on. No love for Zaha? I have 2FT and looking at doing:
        Alonso > Baines
        KDB/Walcott > Zaha/Stanislas (Yet to decide)
        Depoitre > Mounie

Do you think you should stick to certain teams or spread the options across all teams except WBA?

        e.g. 2 Hudders, 2 bournemouth, 2 Eve vs 1 Hudders, 1 stoke, 1 Bourn, 1 Palace etc.

Same as your Jonty with similar reasons except:

        - Van Dijk for Baines/Coleman as Pool more likely to keep a cleanie and VVD has attacking threat too
        - Van La Parra or Zaha for Mane as can't have 4 from one team so VLP & Zaha look great bets for attacking returns
        - & Maybe Bauer for Schindler as Stoke more likely to keep a cleanie than Huddersfield

Triple BOU (Beg/Ake, Stan, King/Wilson) coz WBA be trippin.
Triple LIV attack, little reasons needed here.
Double up on EVE WBs + Tosun in the hope they have finally gotten over their slump.
PVA for attacking threat and CS v a team that couldn't score v 10 man SWA!
Zaha to round off the XI as he is back fit and makes a huge difference to Palace imo 🙂

      As Jonty's 12 but with:

Baines - assist and clean sheet potential, could be on penalties now. I think Everton will be more resilient now with Baines and Coleman back.

Zaha instead of VLP - Punt due to recent injury but Palace's best player and best source of goals. Could be oop as a striker.

Wilson ahead of Josh King - Doubts over King minutes whereas Wilson seems to still be starting for the time being

Depends how you want to play it. You could target certain games for clean sheets / most goals. For example...

      Butland
      Bauer - Zouma - Zanka - Schindler
      Mane - Stanislas - Salah
      Firmino - King - Wilson

Stoke and Huddersfield clean sheets come in then you're laughing, plus all your attackers are from probably the best 2 attacking games.

I like this all or nothing tactic. Very high reward - but also very low risk as everyone will captain Salah anyway and the alternatives will be relatively low owned in the main.

Butland - saves and chance of a cleanie

Dijk - goal threat and nailed on
Baines/Coleman - clean sheets and attacking prospect
PVA - loves a run of attacking returns, form

      Salah - obvious
Stanislas - lovely form and cheap
      Mane - form
Shaq - if stoke score he will be involved
Zaha - Hudd at home in a must win game

Benteke - good returns recently (somehow)
King - pens and against the worst side in the league

Begovic - Looks most likely of keepers to get clean sheet.
      Van Aanholt - Goal threat.
Van Dijk - Goal threat, clean sheet and bonus potential.
Schindler - Bonus points if they get a clean sheet.
Coleman - attacking threat and decent clean sheet potential.
      Salah - Consistency / form.
Zaha - By far his teams most important player. Capable of high returns.
Shaqiri - Good form and by far his teams most potent threat.
Walcott - Goal / assist potential.
Stanlislas - Playing awful team and in decent form.
Firmino - Very consistent and highly owned - huge risk is not an owner.

Baines – him or Gylfi on penalties and set pieces
van Aanholt – attacking returns potential
van Dijk - best chance of a clean sheet and will get a goal soon, picked over Mane to avoid ‘eggs/basket’
Sigurdsson - covers penalties and set pieces with Baines
Shaqiri – best of an uninspiring choice at Stoke
      Salah
Zaha – Palace must start winning, likely to win a penalty and good attacking potential
Stanislas – no idea who will start up front for Bournemouth, so Stan is the man for an attacking spot (Stan + VVD v Mane + other Defender ?)
      Firmino
King/Benteke/Other/Walcott – still to decide this last spot and all seem a rotation risk, may yet play 5 in midfield

      Butland, King/Benteke/Other, Bauer, Schindler

      Butland
      VVD - Schindler - Baines
Mane - Stanislas – Salah- Zaha
      Firmino – King- Tosan

      Butland- form & good fixture
VVD- clean sheet & goal threat
Schindler- clean sheet potential & baps magnet
Baines- set pieces & attacking threat
      Mane- form
      Stanislas- form & fixture
      Salah- Salah!
Zaha- looked very sharp for 45 mins, it’s all about him at CP
Firmino- standout forward of game week
King- worried about Wilson’s form & Defoe’s availability
      Tosan- form
      Worth a mention:
Francis- looked very attacking vs. Spurs
Walcott- still looking dangerous despite poor returns & Everton improving.

I brought in Lossl and Schindler for last GW with GW31 in mind. They had 2 nice fixtures so I figured they might get at least one clean sheet, luckily they got one against Swansea so I'm already up 13 points on that punt, another clean sheet in GW31 would be a bonus.

Brighton Pavilion if you want to see the Taj Mahal without going to India! The pier is a classic. And theres a new massive tower thingy i think you can go up for views as far as France. The pub called "the fortune of war" on the front was quite interesting too!

      Depends what you are into.

East Street/Lanes and North Laine best areas for pubs, eating out, shopping, buskers etc.

      Brighton Pier cheesy but fun.

Brighton museum has some oddities too and worth a visit...so too the Pavilion for some camp Georgian -ness.

No worries. My home town. 🙂

I go back every few months so best restaurants and pubs changes all the time - but those areas have never really changed. North Laine partic good for shopping and pubs - away from all the chains.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 31

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will be selected at random at 8:30am Wednesday and then asked to submit their XI by 10am by Friday by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

FPL site is not the easiest to navigate to find out information etc. and the less geeky make assumptions rather than trawling through the website. There are enough anecdotal examples of chip disasters and questions on here to suggest it all needs to be a bit simpler.

We talk about a 'hit' being a -4 transfer, so a free hit sounds like an extra single transfer whereby you get the player back the following week ... simple is better and maybe that is what a 'free hit' should be?
