Captain Poll – Gameweek 33

Earlier today, we launched our latest Captain Poll to gauge your views on the best armband candidates for Gameweek 33.

The number one captain pick in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in five of the last six Gameweeks, Mohamed Salah will again be among the favourites with Liverpool facing a derby day trip to Everton.

A late winner at Crystal Palace last Saturday lunchtime means that the Egyptian has scored or assisted in 23 of 29 league starts on his way to the top of the FPL rankings.

Up against a Toffees defence that have just one clean sheet in the last 12 Gameweeks, Salah seeks a fifteenth double-figure haul of an incredible campaign.

Away from home, he is ranked second for goals (12), shots (46), efforts in the box (40) and is joint-top with Harry Kane for attempts on target, with 23.

Sadio Mane is the visitors’ other form player, serving up returns in five successive Gameweeks, totalling three goals and a trio of assists.

Spurs’ trip to Stoke brings their quartet of big-hitters into consideration, with Harry Kane expected to provide the main challenge to Salah for the armband.

After returning to action with minutes from the bench in the win at Chelsea, Kane looks set to lead the line against a defence that’s leaked more goals (61) than any other side.

Encouragingly for Kane’s backers, he has scored eight times in his last four league meetings with the Potters.

Furthermore, away from home, he is the top-ranked player for goals (13), shots (61) and efforts in the box (42).

The Spurs midfield could mount a challenge to their fit-again striker, though.

Dele Alli’s brace away to Chelsea took his tally to three goals and two assists in the last three Gameweeks. Meanwhile, Son Heung-min has 36 FPL points over that period and served up 16 points in a 5-1 home win over Stoke earlier in the season.

Then there is the consistent Christian Eriksen to consider. He was also on the scoresheet at Stamford Bridge and remains their top scoring midfielder, ranking fifth in that position overall.

A visit from Southampton’s travel-sick defence looks encouraging for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s growing legion of owners.

The third most bought player in Gameweek 33 so far, a brace at home to Stoke took his tally to five goals and an assist from six league outings for the Gunners. Averaging 6.5 points per match, Aubameyang takes on a defence with just a single clean sheet from their 13 road trips.

Leicester pair Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez welcome a Newcastle United side that have struggled for resilience on the road, claiming just a single shut-out in their previous 13 attempts.

Vardy’s strike at Brighton means that he’s now scored in six of the last eight Gameweeks, yet the Foxes frontman has offer minimal explosive potential – his one and only 10+ points haul was in the season opener against Arsenal.

Mahrez, meanwhile, has supplied returns in 11 of his last 15 league starts and has delivered five sets of double-digits thus far.

With uncertainty over the lone striker role, Man City’s midfield offers a host of eye-catching candidates as they attempt to clinch the title at home to neighbours United.

On the back of 44 points in the last four Gameweeks David Silva is the hosts’ form player. Yet the playmaker has been far from explosive at home, with just a single 10+ points haul at the Etihad.

By comparison, Kevin De Bruyne has delivered six sets of double-digits in front of his own fans, while Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane have five apiece.

That duo both found the net at Everton on Saturday to continue their recent form. Sane has three goals and as many assists in his last seven league outings, while Sterling has two goals and four assists in six.

Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku looks the likeliest to breach the Man City backline for the visitors, having recorded four goals and two assists in his last six league matches.

A single assist – and three attempts on goal – in his last four league outings suggests that Eden Hazard may be a gamble at home to West Ham United. However, the visitors’ record on the road offers encouragement – David Moyes’ men have conceded 11 times in their last three away matches.

That also bodes well for Alvaro Morata, who has scored in back-to-back matches in all competitions since returning to the teamsheet.

Despite his brace against Southampton, the Hammers’ Marko Arnautovic looks set to remain a big differential for the Stamford Bridge encounter.

Nonetheless, eight goals and four assists in his last 11 league outings – and three strikes over the international break – underlines the Austrian’s form. Arnautovic fired four shots on target in Gameweek 32, more than any player, and he scored in the 1-0 win over the Blues in Gameweek 16.

Finally, Pascal Gross’ home comforts could be vital for Brighton against visitors Huddersfield this Saturday.

The summer signing has averaged 5.9 points per appearance at the Amex Stadium and is joint-top with De Bruyne for big chances created (12) in front of his own supporters.

Meanwhile, the Terriers arrive on the south coast having conceded in each of their last 13 away matches.

Our poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 33 deadline when we deliver Friday afternoon’s “Captain Sensible” article, offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind our leading contenders.

    Currently sitting on

Miki > Son this week or trade out Mustafi for a DGWer

or bring in Kane for Auba this week to beat a price rise and do the Miki and Mustafi swap next week?

      *nearly bottomed*

Appreciate thoughts on these moves that I’m considering (OR 370k - probably would play safer if I was higher)

Plan to wc in 35 as I’ve no fh or tc remaining and I’m going to bb in 37

How do these transfers look for next gw34?

      Salah + Zaha > Haz + Lingard (-4)

      Would look like this:

      Lloris
      Robertson - Maguire - Smalling
      Hazard - Mahrez - Lingard - Mili
      Kane - Lukaku - Vardy

Are you more bothered about trying to gain rank/risk big drop (get Haz), or not lose rank (keep Salah)?

Na not bothered pal rather go maverick and have 2 shots at a big score even if it means a drop in OR rank.

The majority will not be captaining Salah either so it won’t do me as much harm dgw 34 id have thought?

I may lose Salah for 37, subject to how MCI are looking and golden boot stuff. A harder choice before then.

Brighton double-up or spread the risk?

            Dunk and Morgan.
It's not often you're gonna see Brighton with a 53% clean sheet chance, if it were me I'd be wading in and hoping to capitilise...

              Firmino & Sterling -> Kane & Willian for a -4 pretty solid?

I still have my wildcard (no FH) and plan to use it in 35.

              Team:
              Pope (Fabianski)
              Maguire Mee Alonso (Fernandez, Hunemeir)
              Salah Sterling Alli Gudmunson Chamberlain
              Vardy Lukaku Firmino

Other option is Sterling & Chamberlain -> Mahrez & Willian for -4.

I'll be wildcarding in 35, which is essentially a freehit. So I'm just looking to get all DGW for 34, with a TC likely on Lukaku.

The WC will be used to set me up to field a full squad in 35 and with players for a BB in 37.

Hello all, reposting this hoping to get some more views on Chelsea. What are your thoughts about having Chelsea assets for the run in? CL qualification looks to be out of reach and feels like Conte will be also gone in the summer. Motivation in the league could be down and with FA Cup their only priority there could also be rotation in the league.

People with Alonso and Willian (I guess quite many who wildcarded gw32) are you planning to keep or possibly ditch for the dgw to fund the likes of Kane and Lukaku?

That is sensible. What if Conte clearly expressess that there will be rotation in the league for fa cup or Chelsea just dont look motivated against west ham could that change your plans?

It could, esp if Kane goes nuts vs Stoke. Otherwise not really a money issue, as would still struggle to find better alternatives without more clarity around Mun defs.

Been thinking about this morning about it.Inhave considerable funds tied up in Hazard and a little worried their season may Peter out.Hazard will be wanting to perform well in the run in with the World Cup though.Wait and see is the answer I suppose so don’t buy Chelsea assets but wouldn’t sell just yet either. They have good fixtures until the end.

Sorry, but how is it possible to have ‘considerable funds’ tied up in Hazard? Isn’t he’s cost about 0.1 above his starting/lowest cost?

Regarding Chelsea’s motivation, I would say it is ‘almost’ the same as Spurs’. If/when the top4 race is over than that means the same thing for spurs and it could effect playing time (and perhaps motivation? Although as it’s been pointed out earlier, the summer’s WC plays its part.)

Gw33 will be just monitoring for me and checking how Chelsea look come gw34 but I think ditching Alonso could be a possibility to afford upgrade in forward positions

They dont excite me. Willian has been doing well so by means was I delighted to go without on my wildcard, but then again, neither am I quaking in my boots that the only Chelsea I have is Christensen.

Have Alonso and Willian, was not convinced personally on WC (did post about this at the time but didn't get much response). Think I'm holding for now, already have a hit planned for 34 excluding them and will probably keep to the end given other priorities.

More that I could see both sides, and wasn't sure which side to fall on. In the end I went with what I thought was best at the time, always easy to say that it was wrong with hindsight.

It's only one of Willian or Alonso I'd be in for...so if I had Alonso, I'd take him over Willian for the same price.

Hazard is an expensive waste of space

                    Morata/Giroud rotate and too flaky

Rest of the defence can't keep clean sheets.

                    Summary: Alonso or nothing

I actually think Willian will be fine - Alonso is the one to worry about.

If Conte starts rotating it will be hazard and Morata that drop out. Either Fab will play behind Morata or Pedro will come in alongside Willian and Giroud.

Alonso is so important and Emerson needs to get up to speed so could be used.

On my wildcard now and all Chelsea are gone, they are an unprofessional bunch when they sulk and with nothing to play for in the league and Conte waiting to be sacked, I can't imagine they'll be 100% committed.

Two away games in the first double, not ideal.

Just got Alonso. Easy downgrade to Newcastle defender with Auba or Lukaku becoming Kane. But certainly giving one more week. Local derby at home and rotation won't kick in until week after. Want my two transfers in the bank going into 34.

Glad I only went for one on wild card, and that was Alonso. Kept the option open to add Willian which I don’t think I’ll be exercising. Watching carefully next week to see if Alonso worth keeping, depends on team attitude

Currently have Willian and Alonso, still keeping.

Will reassess after 33. I have to get in Kane anyway so one of them might have to make way to generate funds.

I am leaning towards keeping Willian and ditching Alonso to free up some cash to do Auba > Kane in GW34. I agree that Chelsea have nothing to play for but Willian (and some others including Alonso) have one: World Cup. It is not only the case for Chelsea but also for MUN, LIV, TOT that they have (almost) nothing to play for other than being 2nd, 3rd and 4th which will not be deciding on CL qualification since they will all skip qualification rounds this year, right?

Do we really think Aubameyang is worthy of captaincy this week?

It took awhile for Arsenal to turnover Stoke, and that was with a strong side. Will they field as strong of a side this Sunday, in between their Europa League tie?

Think I would rather have Lukaku and Kane this week tbh.

Well look how poorly Arsenal played against Stoke and Aubameyang still got 2 goals (almost 3).

Southampton are just as woeful as Stoke are so it'll be another bite at the cherry for Arsenal.

Personally see him as a no-brainer if you don't have Kane.

Would like to say Vardy but I never expect him to score more than one a game.

I have been thinking along these lines too. Ars were far from convincing in that win and with the controversy surrounding both penalties the scoreline flattered. Auba is a great striker whom I rate and he will do well against teams with a high defensive line but this double figure haul looks like an outlier to me...

WC'd in GW32 (got 63pts) and got this squad

                      DDG/Hennessey
                      Robertson/Tarkowski/Alonso/Simpson/Mustafi
                      Salah/Mahrez/Willian/Son/Mkhi
                      Firmino/Auba/Barnes

Having no FH, plan is BB34 with 9 DGWers/6 SGWers, then to scrape 11 for GW35....then bring in as many DGWers for 37 as I can then TC37...

                      Auba/Son to Lukaku/Arnie for GW34 for 2 FT sound a good plan?

Any thoughts on my wildcard team please? Not feeling that confident. This team will give me 13 DGWers but only 5 players for GW35 (No free hit). I am planning on saving up 2 transfers to get a total of 7 players for GW35 later. Is this wise? cheers

Really tough one without the free hit (I’m in the same boat). Maybe being a bit more balanced and having one or two more Liverpool or arsenal players who might do well in 34 even with a single gw and play in 35

I sold Firmino yesterday, when I had originally got him for 8.6m - so might regret that :/

Does anyone know why Son got an assist? It seemed to me that he was shooting and it was blocked and then kicked around multiple times

Blimey. Lots of debate on this yesterday.

Was reviewed and re-reviewed by Opta and ISM. Opta awarded the assist straight away and ISM reviewed and chose for it to stand.

Son's second shot deflected off Alonso and rebounded off Cabellero to Alli. No touch followed after the rebound off the keeper and Alonso's touch was not deemed signficant enough to change the trajectory or speed of his shot and there was only one touch before the rebound that made the ball fall to Alli to score.

                          Explained in this article
                          https://www.premierleague.com/news/511775

                          In particular this bit...

"Players who have their shots saved, blocked by a defender or denied by the woodwork can earn an assist if the ball then falls to a team-mate to score.

Touches or deflections from an opponent before the rebound do not cancel out the assist, unless there is more than one that significantly changes the trajectory or power of the shot."

Wasn't kicked. Rebound equals an assist as long it didn't touch the defenders or other players after that

                        Ryan
                        Alonso / Bailly / Morgan
                        Salah / Mahrez / Son / Willian
                        Aubameyang / Firmino / Vardy

DDG // Van der Hoorn / Lowton / L Cook

                        A) Bailly --> Vertongen (for free)
                        B) Firmino & Mahrez --> Kane & Albrighton (-4)
                        C) Hold. Save FT.

For A, I have then got Spurs defence for season run-in & will simply do Auba --> Lukaku for GW34. For B, I get Kane in early; can still also do Auba --> Lukaku, but at the expense of Mahrez (still have Vardy). For C, if I do this, I might as well use 2FTs next week as I will FH in GW35.

                          Pardew's Premier League stats

He has managed 320 Premier League games with five different clubs.
Pardew had a 34.3% win percentage at Palace, compared to 37.4% at Newcastle, 36.4% at West Ham and 26.3% at Charlton.
His overall win percentage in the top flight is 34.1%.
Pardew has the worst win percentage - 5.5% - of any permanent West Brom manager in the Premier League.
He has won just two of his last 29 Premier League matches as a manager (D7 L20).
