Captain Poll – Gameweek 33

Earlier today, we launched our latest Captain Poll to gauge your views on the best armband candidates for Gameweek 33.

The number one captain pick in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in five of the last six Gameweeks, Mohamed Salah will again be among the favourites with Liverpool facing a derby day trip to Everton.

A late winner at Crystal Palace last Saturday lunchtime means that the Egyptian has scored or assisted in 23 of 29 league starts on his way to the top of the FPL rankings.

Up against a Toffees defence that have just one clean sheet in the last 12 Gameweeks, Salah seeks a fifteenth double-figure haul of an incredible campaign.

Away from home, he is ranked second for goals (12), shots (46), efforts in the box (40) and is joint-top with Harry Kane for attempts on target, with 23.

Sadio Mane is the visitors’ other form player, serving up returns in five successive Gameweeks, totalling three goals and a trio of assists.

Spurs’ trip to Stoke brings their quartet of big-hitters into consideration, with Harry Kane expected to provide the main challenge to Salah for the armband.

After returning to action with minutes from the bench in the win at Chelsea, Kane looks set to lead the line against a defence that’s leaked more goals (61) than any other side.

Encouragingly for Kane’s backers, he has scored eight times in his last four league meetings with the Potters.

Furthermore, away from home, he is the top-ranked player for goals (13), shots (61) and efforts in the box (42).

The Spurs midfield could mount a challenge to their fit-again striker, though.

Dele Alli’s brace away to Chelsea took his tally to three goals and two assists in the last three Gameweeks. Meanwhile, Son Heung-min has 36 FPL points over that period and served up 16 points in a 5-1 home win over Stoke earlier in the season.

Then there is the consistent Christian Eriksen to consider. He was also on the scoresheet at Stamford Bridge and remains their top scoring midfielder, ranking fifth in that position overall.

A visit from Southampton’s travel-sick defence looks encouraging for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s growing legion of owners.

The third most bought player in Gameweek 33 so far, a brace at home to Stoke took his tally to five goals and an assist from six league outings for the Gunners. Averaging 6.5 points per match, Aubameyang takes on a defence with just a single clean sheet from their 13 road trips.

Leicester pair Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez welcome a Newcastle United side that have struggled for resilience on the road, claiming just a single shut-out in their previous 13 attempts.

Vardy’s strike at Brighton means that he’s now scored in six of the last eight Gameweeks, yet the Foxes frontman has offer minimal explosive potential – his one and only 10+ points haul was in the season opener against Arsenal.

Mahrez, meanwhile, has supplied returns in 11 of his last 15 league starts and has delivered five sets of double-digits thus far.

With uncertainty over the lone striker role, Man City’s midfield offers a host of eye-catching candidates as they attempt to clinch the title at home to neighbours United.

On the back of 44 points in the last four Gameweeks David Silva is the hosts’ form player. Yet the playmaker has been far from explosive at home, with just a single 10+ points haul at the Etihad.

By comparison, Kevin De Bruyne has delivered six sets of double-digits in front of his own fans, while Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane have five apiece.

That duo both found the net at Everton on Saturday to continue their recent form. Sane has three goals and as many assists in his last seven league outings, while Sterling has two goals and four assists in six.

Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku looks the likeliest to breach the Man City backline for the visitors, having recorded four goals and two assists in his last six league matches.

A single assist – and three attempts on goal – in his last four league outings suggests that Eden Hazard may be a gamble at home to West Ham United. However, the visitors’ record on the road offers encouragement – David Moyes’ men have conceded 11 times in their last three away matches.

That also bodes well for Alvaro Morata, who has scored in back-to-back matches in all competitions since returning to the teamsheet.

Despite his brace against Southampton, the Hammers’ Marko Arnautovic looks set to remain a big differential for the Stamford Bridge encounter.

Nonetheless, eight goals and four assists in his last 11 league outings – and three strikes over the international break – underlines the Austrian’s form. Arnautovic fired four shots on target in Gameweek 32, more than any player, and he scored in the 1-0 win over the Blues in Gameweek 16.

Finally, Pascal Gross’ home comforts could be vital for Brighton against visitors Huddersfield this Saturday.

The summer signing has averaged 5.9 points per appearance at the Amex Stadium and is joint-top with De Bruyne for big chances created (12) in front of his own supporters.

Meanwhile, the Terriers arrive on the south coast having conceded in each of their last 13 away matches.

Our poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 33 deadline when we deliver Friday afternoon’s “Captain Sensible” article, offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind our leading contenders.

    Big choices for me....

    A) Firmino & Sterling -> Kane & Willian
    OR
    B) Sterling & Chamberlain -> Mahrez & Willian for -4.

Either for a -4? I could also just do Sterling to Mahrez or Willian with no hit.

    Team:
    Pope (Fabianski)
    Maguire Mee Alonso (Fernandez, Hunemeir)
    Salah Sterling Alli Gudmunson Chamberlain
    Vardy Lukaku Firmino

    Thoughts?

    A) Murray, Salah
    B) Kane, Matic, -4

Looks perhaps as an easy A, but I'm chasing a 60 point lead, the leader has both players in A and none of the ones in B. Please advice..

I don't think it's all that obvious. He'll likely be getting Kane back in though so maybe your differential can be to stick it out without Kane

    WC used last week
    DDG Ryan
    Alonso Smalling Morgan Lowton Dunk
    Salah Son Mahrez Gross Gudmundsson
    Lukaku Vardy Barnes

Save and rethink with 2ft before BB34 or any better idea?

As good as Kane is 1 brace in last 11 Gws isn’t the greatest value at £11.7m..

Son has 3 braces in that time,

Might risk it & go without until Gw36

Depends what your plan is until GW36. I genuinely don’t think it matters who Spurs play if Kane is fit.

        He can score against anyone.

The most obvious play to me is to have him in at GW36 as that’s when he’s more likely to score more points. Depends though - he could well score loads of points before GW36 and if you have him in earlier you’d be ahead of the curve.

You don't get Kane in based on form though. You get him in based on how good he is and how explosive he can be.

No other player in the league can go out and get back to back hat tricks IMO. Kane's done it this season and last.

      Ryan
      Alonso / Bailly / Morgan
      Salah / Mahrez / Son / Willian
      Aubameyang / Firmino / Vardy

DDG // Van der Hoorn / Lowton / L Cook

      A) Bailly --> Vertongen (for free)
      B) Firmino & Mahrez --> Kane & Albrighton (-4)
      C) Hold. Save FT

For A, I have then got Spurs defence for season run-in & will simply do Auba --> Lukaku for GW34. For B, I get Kane in early; can still also do Auba --> Lukaku, but at the expense of Mahrez (still have Vardy). For C, if I do this, I might as well use 2FTs next week as I will FH in GW35.

No point getting rid of Bailly, someone who could potentially play twice in GW34. I have similar team but looking to save this week then using a double next week to get Kane back in.

There's no hot topic on Harry Kane yet?!

He featured in yesterday's match, seems likely to start vs Stoke and then has a double gameweek.

Has he completely changed your plans? When will you be bringing him in, 33, 34 or 36? Or perhaps you're going Kane-less all season!

What are your thoughts about 'Arry - leave them below...

I can't get both Kaku and Kane without major surgery. Sticking to my plan unless he goes mental at Stoke. So 36.

          Oh Yes!

          34 or 36 for me.

Only have room for one big striker, right now it's Aubameyang, in 34 it'll be Kane or Lukaku, in 36 it'll be Kane till the end.

No need to rush (as GW22 showed) want to see him start first, never want to feel sick like I was when I saw him on the bench as TC at Swansea.

Will depend on my players form and his form against Stoke next GW. Harold is great as we all know and hattrick out of the blue next GW won't surprise me honestly so won't like him staying out of my team for long time. If my players are fine/another transfer to do pops I will be going without Kane till 36.

        Past 11 Gws

        Son 72 Pts
        Kane 49 Pts

        Captain also comes into consideration

        Gw33 Aubameyang
        Gw34 Lukaku
        Gw35 Salah
        Gw36 Salah

I think (I want) to stick to my plan of Lukaku in for 34 and Kane in for 36.

The one upside to bringing in Kane early (aside from the fact he's one of the best players in the league) is that it saves a transfer down the line but either way I'll need to take a hit.

It does mean I need to make an extra transfer now though and take a hit to bring him in, at the same time weakening my GW34 BB side a little.

I want to stay strong and don't feel I need to bring him in for GW33 - I don't need to captain him so can re-assess afterwards.

If he hauls against Stoke then it's a totally different conversation probably 🙂

Hauling against Stoke doesn't tell us anything we don't already know though. We know he can haul. Hauling or blanking against Stoke doesn't have anything to do with whether he'll haul or blank in 34.

Of course not - but if he does haul then he'll see an increase in buyers and it makes it more risky going without.

Generally I want to see the Stoke game to see whether he starts and how he performs

If Kane is fit and looking well I’ll be bringing him in as another big hitter on my GW34 FH team. Currently looking like this:

        DDG
        Lowton / Chilwell / Simpson
        Salah / Sanchez / Eriksen / Mahrez / L.Cook
        Kane / Lukaku

Mainly non playing cheap fodder for my bench.

I wouldn’t be taking hits to get him for GW33 however, he could easily gradually come back like he did for those (including me) that triple captained him a few months back.

Thanks. The defence is obviously cheap but could easily pick up points and i’d just rather go big or go home on my FH that week as it’s the only week I can justify such an outlay on just 11 players.

The hardest problem would who to captain. Lukaku and Kane obvious choices. Salah has his merits even with one game but Sanchez could be a major punt.

It's amazing how strong you can make your starting 11 with 3.9m to 4.2m bench fodder.

Yeah crazy. I’d panned to only have fodder but I didn’t think I’d be able to afford all four of Salah, Kane, Sanchez and Lukaku along with other decent picks.

I do'nt like that team. It looks unbalanced due to all the heavy-hitters. I'm also looking to go with FH34 but will prob end up with a stranger defence.

34 I think. On my WC I left enough to get him without a hit if he dropped the 0.1 he should have. Obviously didn't learn the Salah price fixing lesson! I'll just wait a week now so I can use the extra free transfer to raise the funds.

Means having Firmino for this weekend instead of Kane; can't see it being a huge difference.

Sticking to the plan with (L)ukaku for GW34 and Kane in for a hit in 36. Reasons are:

        - Lukaku has perfect fixtures for the DGW and is in form
        - Kane has MCI and an away game so not great
        - I can keep hold of Gross rather than downgrading to dross
        - Kane hasn't hauled big for a while
        - He may need to regain some match fitness and might still be reserved for the Cup.
        - Can keep Auba and captain for one more week,
        - After the DGW I can easily downgrade Gross to a useful Swans mid for the next DGW
        - Even if Kane scores well against Brighton, I'll still resist, We know he can always score well, so I won't panic if he does.

Don't want to bring him in until he's proven his fitness. Not a definite to start against stoke.
Prefer lukaku for 34 so unless Kane goes mad against stoke I won't be looking at him until 36.

I'm on wildcard now so looking to bring in Kane straight away. Looking at front line of Kane, Auba and Barnes for 33 but will leave money ITB fof Auba to Lukaku for GW34. Will likely go with Lingard over Son to fund it

Also on wildcard now but I'm planning on ignoring Auba and having Kane, Barnes and Lukaku for the Man City game instead. Pep already said he's going to rest players in the derby so maybe Lukaku could do well?

If you're currently on a WC - bring him in (GW33).
If not on a WC but can bring him in without a hit - bring him in now.
        Any other case - GW34.

In short - as soon as you can without hit(s).

It's Kane...he'll go on a rampage to get the golden boot.

Live ownership is about as low as it gets for Kane.
Around 6% top 10k (fpl discovery). Makes Kane a differential.
Can do Son & Vardy to kane & jlings before any price changes.
Want a player for an end of season away game against a team in trouble? Harry Kane @ Stoke.
Can still then do Auba to lukaku Gw34.

Son and Vardy may easily outscore Kane imo. I will wait and see, but atm uncertain if I bring him in before fh35 or at all. Anything may happen. Sacrificing Alonso or Son and 3rd striker for him for gw34 may not be worth it.

        36.

Those that have Lukaku will keep for 34.

Those that have Aub will look at that Southampton game and think if it’s worth trading out since Southampton are so poor.

        35 obviously no game.

I think you can wait until 36.

        Now.
Getting rid of Kaku for him probably. To have Kane and Aubam in 33.

Then getting rid of Aubam for Kaku to have Kane and Kaku in 34.

Then getting rid of Kane for Aubam to have Kaku and Aubam in 35 (Utd play in 35 right?).

Then getting of Kaku for Kane to have Aubam and Kane until end of season.

I think. Most certainly a waste of transfers back and forth but I really dont care at all - my season has gone to sheeeeeiiiit a long time ago and dont care abt hits. No FH either.

36 unless he explodes next week. Lukaku, Auba and Aguero all in better form (pre injury) and all have doubles. It's not cut and dry.

Will Kane play that second game in 34? Maybe. Maybe not with massive fa cup game and top four all but done.

Kane has only scored more than once on one occasion in the last 9 matches. He's a lot for those returns...

Also I think for 37. Aguero is a better triple captain if fit.

He will play 120, has two home games and could score six.

I’m not as convinced just because he made the squad. Spurs are almost certainly safe for top 4 so it’s possible his minutes are managed with the semi final in mind? Spurs hardly struggled without him.

Kaku has a much better DGW. But I probably will hold off this GW and downgrade Son to bring in Kane for Aubemanyang which was my original plan.

Tempted by this week, but think it'll be before 34. Definitely in for the DGW. Was always the plan if he was back for Auba to become Kane. Main question is which midfielder to downgrade from Salah, Mahrez, Son & Willian to fund it. Between the latter two currently, Son would become a 6.5 mid which is tempting as quite a few potential gems in the bracket.

I'm neck and next with my rival who has lukaku and enough itb to do auba to kane.

Think k need to match him. If Kane explodes in 34 that could be my mini league over.

Got him in already. I played my WC last week and when Poch said he may feature I saved up to do Lukaku vs Kane in 33.

Currently he is owned by only 21% of active managers and unless you're WC'ing this week most will either not have the funds to do this or other pressing matters to address. Even in the Top 10k he is owned by less than 9% so against Stoke City he is a good differential. Even if his minutes are curtailed I believe he can match Lukaku's output this week.

Thoughts on this Wildcard Squad please?

      Hennessey (Lloris)

      Lowton - Chilwell - Mustafi - Smalling - Tarkowski

      Lingard - Mahrez - Son - Salah - Zaha

Kane - Barnes - Aubameyang (funds left for Lukaku for GW34)

William seems like a hit and hope. Concerned that Kane is playing quite deep

      On WC:

      A) Kane + Milivojevic

Alan Pardew leaves West Brom with his players having stole as many taxis as Premier League matches won under his management. Quite the legacy.

What a feat by the lads!

Need some help guys. 10pts down in ML, but rival has used WC/ FH.

      I am On WC, BB34, FH35:

      DDG Ryan
      Morgan Christensen VERT (Lowton Tarkowski)
      Salah Grob Mahrez WILLIAN (Lingard)
      Kane BARNES Aube*

      * FT > Lukaku next week.

      Any major holes?

My other choice was as above but Vert, Willian, Barnes > Vardy, Gudmundsson, 4.9 (Dunk)

Been stewing all day so would appreciate any advice...

        Zaha rather than Groß?

Concerned with Christiansen and Chelsea leaking goals
