Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 33

Earlier today, we launched our latest Captain Poll to gauge your views on the best armband candidates for Gameweek 33.

The number one captain pick in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in five of the last six Gameweeks, Mohamed Salah will again be among the favourites with Liverpool facing a derby day trip to Everton.

A late winner at Crystal Palace last Saturday lunchtime means that the Egyptian has scored or assisted in 23 of 29 league starts on his way to the top of the FPL rankings.

Up against a Toffees defence that have just one clean sheet in the last 12 Gameweeks, Salah seeks a fifteenth double-figure haul of an incredible campaign.

Away from home, he is ranked second for goals (12), shots (46), efforts in the box (40) and is joint-top with Harry Kane for attempts on target, with 23.

Sadio Mane is the visitors’ other form player, serving up returns in five successive Gameweeks, totalling three goals and a trio of assists.

Spurs’ trip to Stoke brings their quartet of big-hitters into consideration, with Harry Kane expected to provide the main challenge to Salah for the armband.

After returning to action with minutes from the bench in the win at Chelsea, Kane looks set to lead the line against a defence that’s leaked more goals (61) than any other side.

Encouragingly for Kane’s backers, he has scored eight times in his last four league meetings with the Potters.

Furthermore, away from home, he is the top-ranked player for goals (13), shots (61) and efforts in the box (42).

The Spurs midfield could mount a challenge to their fit-again striker, though.

Dele Alli’s brace away to Chelsea took his tally to three goals and two assists in the last three Gameweeks. Meanwhile, Son Heung-min has 36 FPL points over that period and served up 16 points in a 5-1 home win over Stoke earlier in the season.

Then there is the consistent Christian Eriksen to consider. He was also on the scoresheet at Stamford Bridge and remains their top scoring midfielder, ranking fifth in that position overall.

A visit from Southampton’s travel-sick defence looks encouraging for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s growing legion of owners.

The third most bought player in Gameweek 33 so far, a brace at home to Stoke took his tally to five goals and an assist from six league outings for the Gunners. Averaging 6.5 points per match, Aubameyang takes on a defence with just a single clean sheet from their 13 road trips.

Leicester pair Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez welcome a Newcastle United side that have struggled for resilience on the road, claiming just a single shut-out in their previous 13 attempts.

Vardy’s strike at Brighton means that he’s now scored in six of the last eight Gameweeks, yet the Foxes frontman has offer minimal explosive potential – his one and only 10+ points haul was in the season opener against Arsenal.

Mahrez, meanwhile, has supplied returns in 11 of his last 15 league starts and has delivered five sets of double-digits thus far.

With uncertainty over the lone striker role, Man City’s midfield offers a host of eye-catching candidates as they attempt to clinch the title at home to neighbours United.

On the back of 44 points in the last four Gameweeks David Silva is the hosts’ form player. Yet the playmaker has been far from explosive at home, with just a single 10+ points haul at the Etihad.

By comparison, Kevin De Bruyne has delivered six sets of double-digits in front of his own fans, while Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane have five apiece.

That duo both found the net at Everton on Saturday to continue their recent form. Sane has three goals and as many assists in his last seven league outings, while Sterling has two goals and four assists in six.

Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku looks the likeliest to breach the Man City backline for the visitors, having recorded four goals and two assists in his last six league matches.

A single assist – and three attempts on goal – in his last four league outings suggests that Eden Hazard may be a gamble at home to West Ham United. However, the visitors’ record on the road offers encouragement – David Moyes’ men have conceded 11 times in their last three away matches.

That also bodes well for Alvaro Morata, who has scored in back-to-back matches in all competitions since returning to the teamsheet.

Despite his brace against Southampton, the Hammers’ Marko Arnautovic looks set to remain a big differential for the Stamford Bridge encounter.

Nonetheless, eight goals and four assists in his last 11 league outings – and three strikes over the international break – underlines the Austrian’s form. Arnautovic fired four shots on target in Gameweek 32, more than any player, and he scored in the 1-0 win over the Blues in Gameweek 16.

Finally, Pascal Gross’ home comforts could be vital for Brighton against visitors Huddersfield this Saturday.

The summer signing has averaged 5.9 points per appearance at the Amex Stadium and is joint-top with De Bruyne for big chances created (12) in front of his own supporters.

Meanwhile, the Terriers arrive on the south coast having conceded in each of their last 13 away matches.

Our poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 33 deadline when we deliver Friday afternoon’s “Captain Sensible” article, offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind our leading contenders.

Am I the only one that though a free hit means basicially a wild card. So now I look at my team (after using free hit), it's back to the team before the free hit. Does this make sense?

                  Its alot to catch up.

And its probably more likely i miss out. BUT i expect to fly up the rankings as lots ahead have not planned well. Its not out of reach yet. Need to nail my chips and get lucky with differentials.

Auba has saints. At home. And is fully fit.

If you're on a wildcard what are you doing? Not having Lukaku? His fixtures in 34 are amazing and he never, ever gets rested.

Kane doesn't even have a game in 35!?

Get him for 36 unless you have a free hit and a wildcard active now.

        Also Aguero. Still better...

I said if on wildcard he is a decent option. My argument is people taking out Lukaku or Auba for him who played wildcard last week. Just hold and wait.

Yea that sounds bad. Managers who wildcarded last week are probably better off not getting Kane in. It will be sofa time for them in the Spurs Stoke game though.

Of course he did. He's explosive. But he wasn't in great form over past TWO MONTHS.

Also looked way off pace yesterday

He's an option of course. But for 12.7 and ripping up your teams to get him back? No. That's madness. He's not worth that price right now.

Not a single person commenting on that points per game I might add? Interesting.

12.7 for 5 per match last ten?

      That's value is it

My mini league leader is ranked 5k. Times owned Kane this season? One match.

Ha ha really? That's classy. Shows how many different options there have been this season

And Salah granted. Been so many top players go through great runs and barren spells all season long. Been miles better than last two years in my opinion. If Salah could just stop scoring now ready for the doubles that might make it perfect.

Kane's last ten games includes 4 top-6 sides...his next games only include City as the only hard fixture...even that might be against a weakened City side.

And he's only played about 30min in total against BOU and CHE if you're using those to drag the average down?

I didn't really. His numbers don't stack up whichever way you look at them for his price

And let's all stop pretending that city are going to put out a B side against spurs?

Why on earth would they? They have a full weeks rest before and after.

I think you make some good points. BUT. He is a machine and he is chasing the golden boot. Last season he went on a tear right about now. Spurs were out of it for the title. Fa cup run bla bla bla. Hat trick hat trick hat trick golden boot thanks. I want salah, kane and maybe even aguero. Cause in a season where top 4 is done and no one has much to play for. Golden boot is key. Salah and kane will be up for every game right to the end. But not this week for me

Any fellow GW 34 FH managers around? How's your FH team looking like? Would appreciate the thoughts of others as well.

I've been tinkering and came up with this. 10 nailed on players. Only worry is Christensen.

    DDG
    Azpilicueta - Christensen - Maguire - Morgan
    Sanchez - Salah - Mahrez - Ibe
    Kane - Lukaku

    3.9 - 4.5 - 4.2 - 3.9

If Stanislas is back in 34 then I'll do Maguire + Ibe ➡ Stanislas + Simpson.

    Thoughts?

That DGW34 defence sure ain't easy-
Is Christensen and Bavies still considered too much rotation risks, so Alonso or Verthongen the only nailed options?
And what about Chilwell ho everyone seems to be getting in - is he too risky compared to Morgan?

Hey, would appriciate some clearyfying on the FH chip.

Let’s say I carry two free transfers into gw35. I use the transfers and get two new players in my squad. After the transfers I activate the FH and optimize the squad for gw35.

For GW36 will I stand with the squad before or after the free transfers?

All my chips still intact but still have a WC dilemma...would love to know what others are doing...

    A - WC GW33, BB GW34, FH GW35, TC GW37
    B - FH GW34, TC GW 35 or 38, WC GW36, BB GW37

Benefits of A - BB in GW34 when there is less chance of rotation than GW37, and also helps out if you don't have a strong team for GW33

Benefits of B - effectively a new team for each of the DGWs, which given the final schedule hasn't been released yet might be very useful and by GW36 we'll have a much better view on who's still playing for what.

Any thoughts? Any convincing arguments for either option?

I was leaning towards A when I started this, not so sure now!

If you are a transfer or two away from a solid squad in 34, I'd save your WC for 36 (or even 35).

as a WC holder, I'm very reluctant to use my WC in 33 because the rest of the doubles haven't been established. I'm also likely to carry two FTs into 34 which I might not even need because I have a selection headache already with the good LIV SGW.

      GL!

Thanks for that. I was thinking FH in GW34, and happy enough with what I can do for GW33 and GW35 so definitely leaning towards GW36 WC now.

      It's difficult
On one hand it could be mind games
On the other hand Liverpool then Utd 3 days later then Liverpool again in such a short space of time..
A derby will be fiery with strong challenges so imo it's not worth city risking some key players

The league is won, and yeah, winning it by beating your rivals would be great, but surely not at a risk of injury and potentially jeopardizing UCL

Simple question - How punty should I be?

Say on a scale of 1 - 10, 1 being my boring old self.

Chasing 39 points, rival has used FH and WC, looking to TC in 34 and BB in 37, with a team in good shape (Looks unlikely to have Kane fyi)
I'm on a WC, with BB in 34, FH 35 and TC 37.

Could the chips pull those points back, or should I look to start taking some larger calculated risks.

    Thanks all
