Line-up Lessons – Gameweek 32 – Part Two

Son Heung-min and Erik Lamela are both trialled as “false 9s” as Harry Kane returns to action off the bench in Spurs’ win at Chelsea.

Southampton striker Charlie Austin is back in contention for the first time since Gameweek 19, Richarlison drops to the Watford bench, while Jose Mourinho shuffles his central defence for the 2-0 win over Swansea City.

After checking out the first ten teams yesterday, we turn to part two of Line-up Lessons, assessing the teamsheets and formations from
the Gameweek 32 matches, with one eye on what’s to come from the midweek European matches and beyond.

Manchester City

Starting XI: Ederson; Walker, Otamendi, Kompany, Laporte (Danilo 87); De Bruyne (Gundogan 77), Fernandinho, D Silva; Sterling (B Silva 64), Jesus, Sane. Subs not used: Bravo, Adrabioyo, Zinchenko, Nmecha.

  • What we saw: Pep Guardiola continued with his favoured 4-3-3 formation for the trip to Everton, handing a start to Aymeric Laporte in the slightly unfamiliar position of left-back. Laporte was forced off late on with a foot injury, however, seeing Danilo finish the match on the left side of the City defence.
  • What we learned: The City boss chose not to rotate at Goodison Park, but now faces two matches against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, along with Saturday’s Manchester derby, in the space of seven days. With Kompany a probable starter on Wednesday night, he could miss out to either Laporte or John Stones (concussion), providing either player is passed fit. Fabian Delph is expected to be available for midweek, and certainly the weekend, so he, Danilo and Oleksandr Zinchenko provide options at left-back. Should the City boss look to freshen things up against Jose Mourinho’s side, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva should come into contention, with the likes of David Silva, Raheem Sterling or Leroy Sane potentially rested. Regardless of whether Sergio Aguero starts against Liverpool in midweek, Gabriel Jesus would seem likely to lead the line against United.

Current Status: Fairly settled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, left-back, central striker

Manchester United

Starting XI: De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Lindelof, Young; Matic, Pogba; Mata (McTominay 90), Lingard (Herrera 75), Sanchez (Rashford 75); Lukaku. Subs not used: Pereira, Bailly, Shaw, Martial.

  • What we saw: Jose Mourinho recalled Paul Pogba for the home clash against Swansea City, with the Frenchman joining Nemanja Matic in the double-pivot in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Juan Mata (right), Jesse Lingard (No 10) and Alexis Sanchez (left) formed the attacking midfield trio, while Victor Lindelof was somewhat surprisingly preferred to Eric Bailly in central defence. Mourinho switched to a 4-3-3 following the introductions of Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford, with the Spaniard helping shore up the midfield on his return from injury.
  • What we learned: Up next is the Manchester derby at the Etihad, with Mourinho likely to have something up his sleeve tactically in order to try and nullify Pep Guardiola’s rampant City side. Herrera, Scott McTominay or possibly Marouane Fellaini could be options to start in central midfield in a slightly more defensive 4-3-3, with Mata the player most likely to drop to the bench in such a scenario. But if he sticks with a 4-2-3-1, Rashford or Anthony Martial may be options to replace Mata out wide. Bailly is expected to return in central defence at the expense of Lindelof. A three-man defence could also be an option, with all three centre-backs then in with a chance of starting. Phil Jones offers another alternative.

Current Status: Fairly settled
Risk Areas: Central defence, central midfield, flanks

Newcastle United

Starting XI: Dubravka; Yedlin, Lascelles, Lejeune, Dummett; Ritchie (Atsu 67), Shelvey, Diame (Hayden 79), Kenedy; Perez; Gayle (Slimani 75). Subs not used: Clark, Murphy, Manquillo, Darlow.

  • What we saw: Rafa Benitez named the same side that beat Southampton in the previous league match for the visit of Huddersfield Town to St James’ Park, with the Magpies lining up in a 4-4-1-1 formation. Islam Slimani was fit to make his Newcastle debut as a substitute, replacing Dwight Gayle as the lone striker.
  • What we learned: Following another victory, Benitez could again name the same starting XI for Saturday’s trip to Leicester City. On-loan forward Slimani is ineligible to face his parent club, so Gayle should again spearhead the Newcastle attack. Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy provide possible alternatives to Matt Ritchie on the right flank.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Right wing

Southampton

Starting XI: McCarthy; Cedric Soares, Stephens, Hoedt, Bertrand; Tadic, Lemina, Hojbjerg, Redmond (Boufal 67); Austin (Carrillo 83) Gabbiadini (Long 46). Subs not used: Forster, Yoshida, Romeu, Ward-Prowse.

  • What we saw: Mark Hughes stuck with the 4-4-2 formation that yielded a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic in his first match in charge for the trip to West Ham United. The Saints boss was able to call upon Charlie Austin, who returned from injury to partner Manolo Gabbiadini up front. Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond started out wide, with Sofiane Boufal only appearing as a second-half substitute.
  • What we learned: Following a bitterly disappointing display and result, Hughes is likely to make some changes for Sunday’s trip to Arsenal. If he sticks with a 4-4-2, Shane Long or Guido Carrillo may replace Gabbiadini, while in a 4-2-3-1, Boufal could be a viable starter in place of the Italian. James Ward-Prowse provides a different option both out wide and in central midfield, while Oriol Romeu offers another alternative. Changes are perhaps less likely in defence, but Maya Yoshida could be considered at centre-back.

Current Status: Unsettled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, flanks, attacking midfield, forwards

Stoke City

Starting XI: Butland; Johnson, Shawcross, Martins Indi, Pieters; Allen, N’Diaye; Bauer, Shaqiri, Sobhi (Crouch 79); Diouf (Berahino 61). Subs not used: Ireland, Cameron, Haugaard, Campbell, Sorensen.

  • What we saw: Paul Lambert opted for a 4-4-1-1 formation for the trip to Arsenal, with the fit-again Mame Biram Diouf stationed as the lone striker. Xherdan Shaqiri started in a central support role, while Moritz Bauer operated in a slightly unfamiliar position on the right side of midfield. At the back, Bruno Martins Indi and Erik Pieters replaced the injured Kurt Zouma (knee) and Konstantinos Stafylidis (broken rib) at centre-back and left-back respectively. Stoke ended with substitutes Saido Berahino and Peter Crouch up front, with Shaqiri given a free role in more of a 4-3-1-2.
  • What we learned: Another encouraging display failed to produce any points for the Potters, but given the lack of options available to Lambert, few changes are expected for Saturday’s home clash against Tottenham Hotspur. The Stoke boss has favoured Diouf in attack when the Senegal international has been available, but following his knock at the Emirates Stadium, both Berahino and Crouch could be considered for starting berths. Shaqiri would provide a more attacking option on the right wing, which would then leave Bauer and Glen Johnson competing to start at right-back. If Zouma and Stafylidis remain out, the rest of the back four could stay unchanged. Geoff Cameron provides the main alternative in the middle of the park.

Current Status: Unsettled
Risk Areas: Defence, right wing, forwards

Swansea City

Starting XI: Fabianski; Naughton, van der Hoorn, Fernandez, Mawson, Olsson; Dyer (Abraham 46), Ki Sung-yueng (Carroll 46), King; Clucas (Routledge 55); A Ayew. Subs not used: Narsingh, Nordfeldt, Bartley, Roberts.

  • What we saw: Carlos Carvalhal rolled out his defensive 5-4-1 formation for the trip to Manchester United, with Andre Ayew preferred to Tammy Abraham as the lone striker in the continued absence of the suspended Jordan Ayew. That meant Nathan Dyer was handed a start on the right side of midfield. But following an ineffective first-half display from Dyer, he made way for Abraham at half-time. The substitute played as the lone striker, with Andre Ayew moving to an inside right position. Carvalhal’s final change saw Wayne Routledge replace Sam Clucas on the left, after the latter suffered a twisted knee.
  • What we learned: After impressing off the bench, Abraham is likely to be recalled for Saturday’s trip to West Bromwich Albion in the continued absence of the suspended Jordan Ayew. His brother Andre could start on the right, then, with Tom Carroll, Routledge and perhaps Dyer options to line up on the left should Clucas be ruled out. Carroll also provides cover in the middle of the park for the Swans.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, flanks, lone striker

Tottenham Hotspur

Starting XI: Lloris; Trippier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier (Wanyama 81), Dembele; Lamela (Sissoko 88), Alli, Eriksen; Son Heung-min (Kane 73). Subs not used: Vorm, Rose, Aurier, Lucas Moura.

  • What we saw: After making a swift return following an ankle injury, Harry Kane was named among the substitutes for Spurs’ trip to Chelsea. Son Heung-min started as the lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation, while Kieran Trippier was preferred to Serge Aurier at right-back. Mauricio Pochettino changed things around at half-time, though, with Son moving out to the right, seeing Lamela take over as a false nine. Kane made his comeback with 17 minutes left, replacing Son, seeing Lamela return to a position on the right flank.
  • What we learned: While Pochettino revealed Kane still has some work to do before returning to full fitness, it’s likely the striker will push for a start for Saturday’s trip to Stoke City. That would leave Son and Lamela battling for one spot in the attacking midfield positions. Aurier could push for a start at right-back in place of Trippier, but unless Pochettino looks to rotate further, other changes appear unlikely.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Right-back, flanks, lone striker

Watford

Starting XI: Karnezis; Janmaat, Mariappa, Prodl (Cathcart 64), Holebas; Capoue, Doucoure; Femenia (Richarlison 81), Hughes (Okaka 75), Pereyra; Deeney. Subs not used: Gomes; Gray, Lukebakio, Ndong.

  • What we saw: Javi Gracia kept faith in the usual 4-2-3-1 formation for the visit of Bournemouth to Vicarage Road, but he did make one headline selection. The Hornets head coach dropped Richarlison to the bench, with Will Hughes recalled in the No 10 role. Roberto Pereyra (left) and Kiko Femenia (right) completed the attacking midfield trio. Watford finished the match in a 4-4-2, with Stefano Okaka joining Troy Deeney up front, while Richarlison was brought on to replace Femenia on the right wing.
  • What we learned: Gracia has stuck with a fairly settled side since taking charge back in January, and he’s likely to name a similar starting XI for Saturday’s home fixture against Burnley. Hughes impressed on his return to the side and should retain his start, so Richarlison may have to settle for a place on the bench once more. Sebastian Prodl was replaced last weekend mainly due to being on a yellow card, but Craig Cathcart and potentially Miguel Britos, providing he recovers from illness, offer alternatives in central defence.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, flanks

West Bromwich Albion

Starting XI: Foster; Dawson, Evans, Hegazi; Nyom, Livermore, Yacob, Brunt, Gibbs (Phillips 46); Rodriguez (Burke 74), Rondon. Subs not used: Myhill, McClean, Gabr, Krychowiak, McAuley.

  • What we saw: Alan Pardew named the same side that lost 2-1 to Bournemouth for the home encounter against Burnley, with the Baggies lining up in a 3-5-2 system. But Pardew opted to bring on Matt Phillips for Kieran Gibbs at half-time, switching to a 4-5-1, with Phillips (right) and Jay Rodriguez (left) operating out wide. The change saw Allan Nyom move to left-back, with Craig Dawson lining up at right-back.
  • What we learned: After West Brom parted company with Pardew yesterday, it was announced that first-team coach Darren Moore will be in charge of first-team affairs until further notice. The interim boss is likely to be at the helm for Saturday’s home meeting with Swansea City, then, with changes likely against the Welsh outfit. If Moore plays with wingers, the likes of Phillips, Oliver Burke and James McClean could push for recalls, while if he’s passed fit, Sam Field may be an option in central midfield. Gareth McAuley provides the main back-up option in central defence but looks an unlikely starter. Hal Robson-Kanu had seemingly been out of favour under Pardew, but he is another who could come back into the fold. Both Nacer Chadli (thigh) and Daniel Sturridge (hamstring) are close to first-team returns and may be back in contention.

Current Status: Very Unsettled
Risk Areas: All Positions

West Ham United

Starting XI: Hart; Zabaleta, Rice, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Antonio (Fernandes 9), Noble, Kouyate (Cullen 89), Masuaku; Joao Mario, Arnautovic (Hugill 80). Subs not used: Adrian, Evra, Pask, Diangana.

  • What we saw: Hammers boss David Moyes stuck with a 3-4-2-1 formation for the home meeting with Southampton. Marko Arnautovic was stationed as the lone striker, supported by Michail Antonio and Joao Mario in the central attacking midfield spots in the absence of the injured Manuel Lanzini. Arthur Masuaku returned from his six-match ban at left wing-back, while Declan Rice started on the right of the three-man defence, with James Collins ruled out with a hamstring injury. But Moyes was forced into making an early change after Antonio had to be replaced due to a hamstring injury. The returning Edimilson Fernandes took his place, providing a slightly more defensive option in midfield, leaving Mario and Arnautovic in attack.
  • What we learned: With Antonio reportedly ruled out for the rest of the season, Moyes will be forced into making at least one change for Sunday’s trip to Chelsea. Given how well the team played against Saints, there could be a temptation to start Fernandes. But if Lanzini (knee) is fit to return, he will surely get the nod. Collins remains more of a doubt, but if he is passed fit, the Welshman is a possible alternative to Rice in the back three. Chicharito missed out at the weekend due to illness, but he could be back on the bench at Stamford Bridge.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, attacking midfield

Bailly, Mikhitaryan benched. Blanks from Willian, Azpilicueta, Gross. Barnes on my bench. 55 points after WC, mostly red arrows. Not a good week!

      62 points on wildcard!

Thanks to De Gea, Maguire, Kiko, Salah (c), Aubameyang and Barnes.

If Chelsea has turned up I would have been in for a big score as had Alonso, Hazard and Willian.

      Mahrez and Gross also disappointed.

Generally smooth 69 Points. Used WC. Original team would have scored about 40 points this GW.

Brought in Sane, Auba, Vardy, Dubravka, Smalling, Mustafi - all returned points.

Fails were Firmino, Mahrez, Mkhi 1-pointer (had Kenedy 6pts on the bench) and Otamendi.

A long awaited smooth 93 (-4) points. WC was played way back so the team was a lot of GW31 debris like Arnie, King, Chilwell etc. Finally betting against Salah (or the House) paid off with the transfer in of Auba (c).

Just crept back into top 500k - been hard to keep going but have to fight to the end...

Smooth: 89 on a WC team based on no FH35.

      Rough: Captained Auba over Arnie.

I think not having the FH chip helped this week as had to include GW35 players like Arnie and Auba that ended up scoring well.

Captained Aub, has 22 points after the first day and ended with 68 thanks to Mustafi and Aub.

My wildcard gave me a much better team that didn’t have Benteke up front so that’s a win.

      VERY ROUGH:

-Glen Murray missed penalty not only meant 0 pts but also ruined my multi (Lukaku, Murray & Arnie to score) for $150.

-Lukaku only scoring one and missing all those chances ruined my other multi (Arnie brace & Lukaku brace) for $400

-Managed to get my bet in for Arnie but missed the deadline to transfer Richarlison to Arnautovic (Just moved overseas and time difference ruined me)

-Chelsea fan (Spurs beat Stamford Bridge hoodoo and ruined our top 4 hopes)

Late Newcastle and WBA goals ruined 3 of my Burnley & Huddersfield clean sheets.

My only player who got more than 2 points was Salah (C).

Literally the worst week of football ever for me 🙂

Rough – 56 after WC. Had the armband on Aubameyang up until the deadline, but changed my mind out of fear after hearing all the people captaining him (on the Scoutcast as well 🙂 ).

No one to blame but myself, and I've learned (once again) to go with my gut, no matter what. Staying put on 62K.

Huge Smooth- Arnautovic (C) with differentials of Alli and D. Silva successfully breaking the template for me! Aubameyang and Lukaku up top did wonders whilst Chilwell's 11 came in handy too! 93 points results in a jump from 700K to 400K for me, my season's finally looking up!

Had Schmeichel and Smalling on WC and changed to de Gea and Maguire Friday. Kept Firmino on WC. Captained Salah instead of Aubamayang who one of my main ML rivals captained. Vardy's late goal helped though. Not sure Willian pick wise and picked Gudmundsson who didn't play but was always going to bench anyway

Rough: Murray missed penalty, Bailly no show.

Smooth: Bailly no show promoted morgan off the bench to cancel out the missed pen! 1 week punt on Lascelles also paid off.

61 points after a Wildcard, solid but not spectacular. A good basis for the following weeks though and no unwelcome injuries or suspensions.

Smooth - going against the masses and captaining Aubameyang + opting out of double Burnley defence and going for Kiko, a non DGW defender but a 4.3 bargain playing in midfield.

Rough - Aubameyang surrendering his penalty, Mkhi being benched, me benching Barnes and a frustrating point from Alonso after he could have had a haul.

      IN: De Gea 6 Smalling 6 Kiko 8 Monreal 6 Arnautovic 16 Gross 2 Kaku 8 Aubameyang 26 (C) 65 points counting Aubam as 13pts (Kennedy 6 Ward 2, benched)

      OUT: Lössl 2 Baines 1 PVA McArthur 1 Mane 6 Stanislas 1 Mounie 1 Wilson 2 Mee 2 Mawson 1 16 points

Mini ROUGHS: Aubameyang handing the hattrick ball to La Gazette, also because as I had 3 separate 10 pound bets on him to score 1, 2 or more and a hattrick!!

Benching Kennedy over Gross, and keeping Mahrez instead of the planned Silva switch. (Kept for security of starts, fixtures DGW etc, goos in the long run i feel)

      Smooth:

Used my FT on Quaner > Aubameyang.
After watching my Schmeichel - Chilwell double up elegantly avoid clean sheets against Everton, Stoke, Wba, Bournemouth and Swansea, it was finally time for a haul. Almost all of my differentials returned; Mane, Monreal, King, Eriksen..

87 points and the highest GW rank of my FPL career halved my rank from 150k to 75k.

Smooth: my free transfer was Crouch to Aubameyang. It’s not often I’ll get to enjoy a transfer like that! (Meant I could bench Walcott.)

Rough: held back from wildcarding until this week (33) to get more info - but meant that I played double Burnley defence, Shaqiri at Arsenal and Alonso. Sigh...

      WC paid off.

The Auba (c), Lukaku, Vardy “Power 3” front line came through.

Team in good shape for BB34 with 2FT to ship out Auba and Son for Kane and Groß/other.

      Gudmundsson the only concern.

Smooth: Took a -8 to sell Alonso, Walcott and Wilson. Alonso only got 1pt. Walcott would have been benched for Shaqiri, who got 2pts. And it should go without saying that Wilson got 2pts.

My replacements were Monreal (6pts), Mkhitaryan (1) and Aubameyang (13pts). I also captained Auba instead of Salah (7pts), so I ended up making a *profit* of 13pts from my double-hit (32pts from 4 players instead of 19pts), and saving my WC for GW36 in the process.

Rough: Mkhi and Mounie were benched and Stanislas got injured (1pt each). I’ve kept the Liverpool triple up, but the only player who returned was Salah, which hurts more than helps. Again, van Dijk was quiet while other managers benefitted from Robertson’s delivery (of 8pts).

All in all, the week was a kind of damage control success. I got a mediocre 44pts (after hits), but that’s a huge relief after ending Saturday with only 10pts, whilst dropping in OR by 80k, from 74k to 154k ❗

In the end - thanks to Arsenal’s jammy scoreline - I regained 55k on Saturday to finish just inside the top 100k (99,390), and now I’m looking forward to triple Arsenal and Liverpool again next week, before playing the Free Hit chip in Gameweek 34.

On WC, swapped Butland, Francis, Stanislas, Shaqiri, Aguero and for de Gea, Mustafi, Arnie, Silva and Auba which delivered a +48 point swing.

Rough: Barnes, Kiko and Morgan points on the bench. Should've played bench boost this week! Also had Schmeichel for the last 6 GW's, 9 points altogether. Now that I got him out, 15 pointer with a saved pen. Story of my season really.

A smooth week for a change. Wildcarded and captained Aubameyang. 70pts, which considering that I wasn't set up for this GW was a good return, and 38pts more than the team I would have played had I not hit the button. I also saved 0.5m in budget by not waiting another week to wildcard.

Smooth: My best GW rank of the season (32k) and a jump of 50k places to 72k. Hopefully I can maintain and improve on it now as Ive been in and out of top 100k since GW 23. Had Auba (c) and CS for all my defence Mustafi Dummet Smalling and DDG. 79 points and a successful WC to narrow my ML rival's lead to only 2 points.

Rough: Barnes' points on the bench, (Would have still played Groß probably), Auba being generous with the 2nd penalty. Overall though a great GW.

An overall smooth with 69 points on a wild card though could have been better if Alonso or Willian had returned or Burnley didn’t concede. Also had Chilwell on the bench and missed his points.

Lukaku, Barnes, De Gea, Salah, Monreal and Auba (c) were the major contributors.

      Very rough.

My differential was my formation, spending big on elite defenders rather than on expensive forwards, so I didn't own Aubameyang or Lukaku. This might have been a good idea earlier in the season, but it failed miserably in GW32.

I expected Chelsea to beat Spurs because of Spurs' poor away record against top six teams, so I started Alonso (1), Azpilicueta (1) and Willian (2) and benched Son (5) and Bavies (4) - should have taken more account of Chelsea's poor form recently.
I also benched Barnes (6) and played Murray (0) instead.

Only 44 points after playing my Wildcard, and red arrows all round.
I just hope my new wildcard squad is more successful in later game-weeks than it was in GW32.
I see lots of recommendations for differentials to shoot up the rankings, but more often than not they seem to have the opposite effect!

That's rough. Unlucky man. I had Alonso and Azpi, but sold Alonso for a hit so I could afford Mkhi and Auba (-8 in total).

The good thing about the Chelsea duo is that they are premium for a reason. If you don't get rid of them promptly, it's not a big problem because they will get points, whether they end up being good value or not. Other players need a bit more chopping and changing. You can cash in on the Chelsea pair any time or swap directly for Valencia, if you don't already have him.

However, it's hard to see why you would go without Auba on a WC. More expensive players, I can understand, but not so much him. That said, just because the strong defence approach didn't work this week, that's not to say it won't in other weeks 🙂 Good luck

I already have Valencia and DDG - it's a very expensive defence.
Even at premium prices, my elite defenders were all good value earlier in the season, but perhaps some of them no longer are.

I would like to have owned Aubameyang, but I would rather have Vardy for the DGWs and would have to downgrade most of my premium defenders (as most have done in the template squad) in order to afford both Auba and Vardy.

Downgrading just one or two of my elite defenders would not be sufficient, so I think I'm now stuck with what I've got (apart from perhaps upgrading Vardy to Kane and downgrading a midfielder, or taking a hit to downgrade a couple of defenders, in order to finance it).

The world number one has been playing with 4 good defenders and only a couple of decent forwards for most of the season, but he's been doing it a lot better than I have!

Smooth - brought in Sanchez, Vardy and Wood instead of Lukaku, Mahrez and Barnes. Mustafi and Kiko too. Jesus captain was a punt that worked.

Rough - just missing out on an Izquierdo assist. Alonso and Hazard but they will hopefully come good.

With a DGW Alonso the only real defensive Chelsea choice outside Aspi who is not that much cheeper.
With all the defensive big hitters with DGW facing rotation, I can only say getting cheaper enablers (Liecester, Burnley, Swans, Soton) defenders.
Can afford the likes of Kane and Kaku if I take this route.

Very true Re single digit pointers. However Lukaku seems to be coming back to life and has a better 37 dgw. I switched between vardy and lukaku many times, but what made me stick with Lukaku is I'm leading my money mini league and can almost guarantee those below me will be getting and captaining Lukaku in 34. I do not want to be there regretting not bringing him in if he scores 2/3 goals over those 2 games which he very potentially can do.

With Vardy I'm sure Mahrez will cover his output from now till the end of the season without a shadow of doubt

It's a question mate, you do what you feel is best for your team.

Some of us have pretty decent team value and can squeeze both in quite easily. I personally had a TV over 106 and was able to leave 2.3itb for the Kane fund for 34 if needed. I'm now tempted to have both though.

I think both is the way to go because I'm fairly sure quite a few people won't be able to get both or won't get both hence turning either one into a fairly decent differential.

Personally I'd have no chips or captains and half points of bench. But I'm OK with the wildcards which I don't really classify as chips.A team unfairly done over by injury can at least be recovered with them.

Boring to some but a purer form of the game for me, which brings more emphasis on getting the right starting team out.

For those Scoutcasters with DDG in their team, will they be benching him DDG for GW 33?

For example, I have Foster (yuck I know) who has Swansea at home. Not the greatest example as West Brom are awful, but surely Man Utd have no chance of a CS vs City in comparison to many other fixtures?

Or is DDG simply so good that you trust him with save points and perhaps even a miraculous Jose bus parked CS score?!

There is a flipside to that argument too:
Alonso needs to perform to ensure his place in the WC squad.
Hazard will have a point to prove if he fancies a move to Spain in the Summer.
        Good fixtures.

Is there any merit to benching Lukaku away at the Etihad?

With the majority seemingly captaining Aubemeyang, is Salah a differential captain (yet again)?

Why do Palace keep getting penalties?

Do we trust the Brighton D from now on, despite Huddersfield at home at the weekend?

Is there a bit too much concern paid to 'teams on the beach', ie. teams with little or nothing to play for?
Players from these teams may be more relaxed and able to put in better performances than many assets, particularly those with a point to prove (Eyeing Summer move, place in WC squads etc.). I guess it's 'players on the beach' that is the real worry 😉

With no FH and no WC, is it still better to BB in 34 and TC in 37?

If yes, are Burnley assets the right picks for the bench, as they play in 35 and have decent fixtures afterwards?

Chelsea players, even with two doubles should we be moving them on? Hazard and Alonso, in my case.

After winning the league in 14/15, Chelsea had some shockers towards the back end of the 2015/16 season (Sunderland 3 - 2 Chelsea !!) Will history repeat itself?

Alonso looked dangerous again even in that dreadful performance v Spurs. He has the fixtures to suit so I'm holding (only concern is that he might be rested for one of the DGW fixtures).
Hazard however better haul at the weekend as he's far too expensive to be blanking four GWs in a row!

Would it be better to Bench Boost in GW37 given the uncertainty of the fixtures, form and rotation of the DGW teams in GW34

Chelsea, Man Utd & Spurs - All face possible rotation with the FA Cup Semi Finals a few days later

      1) Yet another single digit return for Lukaku, he's poor value when compared to Vardy who will give you very similar returns for a lot less. Is it time for Lukaku owners to trade in for a returning Harry Kane?

      2) Are we concerned about Emerson's late cameo? Is Alonso under threat?

      3) Has Aubamenyang done enough to persuade the scoutcasters to move away from the herd and take the captaincy away from Mo Salah?

What players will start both DGW fixtures?

Why drop Liverpool players - they don't have a blank and have great fixtures. It's likely Chelsea and United will rest their players before their FA cup fixtures?

How much difference does having a reason to play (avoid relegation, top 4) etc. make?

Will Aubameyang start every match in the prem as he can't play in Europa? Does that make him the best TC option in a DGW? On penalties too (if he doesn't start bloody giving them all away)

      Cheers Jonty

      Views on BB GW34 v 37?

Not convinced fixtures and teams in GW34 warrant the BB as opposed to having a strong playing 11 with bench fodder. GW37 BB appears more attractive.

And there are a couple of strong TC candidates for GW34: Mahrez, Vardy, Lukaku, Hazard?

Is it time to let go of some of the DGW fever and focus on SGW players who are more likely to outscore them due to form & fixtures, particularly as many players are at risk of rotation accross the DGW's anyway. I brought Kiko in this week but didn't have it in me to go for 2 SGW players and opt for Arny over Willian due to the Chelsea double. However, in hindsight Willian probably won't play 2 in the double anyway and Arnie has a plumb fixture against his old club! Don't get caught up in the DGW hype I tell myself....but I still can't resist the gamble of a double return 🙂

As a %, how much of the scoutcast will be spent talking about Harry Kane? 😀

Is he really that essential for DGW34, Man City away, going for the title or not it's a tough game, Brighton away is a lovely fixture but if you can only fit in one of Kaku and Kane. Has to be Kaku?

If Mark is on the scoutcast, 80%. I think Mark has only had 10 captain fails this season and 8 of them have been down to Kane, the man is a troll.

I agree with you on fixtures and predictability of returns that Kaku is the safer option. I'm sure he will score somewhere between 10 and 20 points (non captained) that week.

Whereas Kane could give you 4 points or 34 points. No one knows.

Besides, I'll definitely be captaining Lukaku, so if I spend 12.7 on a player, don't even captain him and he blanks like he often does, that's just going to make me angry as I would regret not spending those funds elsewhere.

Some say it is over-hyped, some say league is won so focus is elsewhere, some say top4 race is basically over so rotation.

Could get it to come out as an article as well with numbers and scenarios from past history of Pep/Klopp, their league positions at the time, no. of matches involved, injury situations, etc.

For those loading up with triple Spurs, Man U, Chelsea for DGW 34 - are you not concerned a lot of the big guns may well be rested for the Wednesday/Thursday 2nd matches.
With Man City winning the league surely the Saturday Cup semi finals are huge games as it’s their only chance of silverware.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 33

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will be selected at random at 8:30am Wednesday and then asked to submit their XI by 10am by Friday by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

A bit of left field thinking here from me but I’m thinking of going for only SGW players in the DGWs. That should be a good differential tactic

        Morning gents. Quick poll please.

        For BB34:

        A) Alonso, Vardy, Lukaku (free)
        B) Alonso, Vardy, Kane (free)
        C) Tarkowski, Lukaku, Kane (-4)

Lost on last article (cheers @Big Red Dog for the reply)

Major benching headache this week - need some help please!

Used WC in GW32 and hoping to save FT this week and BB in GW34 with FH in GW35

Currently looking like this but have no clue who to bench:

        1FT £0.7itb
        Ryan
        Alonso, Mustafi, Vertonghen
        Salah (V), Mahrez, Son, Willian
        Auba (C), Firmino, Barnes

        (DDG) (Gros, Morgan, Lowton)

Any advice? Who should I be benching? I think main decision is whether to play Barnes (wat) or Gros (HUD). Benching Morgan vs NEW is paining me but don't think I have a choice.

        Cheers

(P.S. I'm not a member so no access to Expected goals conceded stats)

I’m still playing DDG over Ryan.

Likely save bonuses. If he gets a cleanie too then he’s on for MOTM.

Extremely unlikely United keep clean sheet against City at the Etihad and Brighton are at home to Huddersfield so I expect Ryan to outscore DDG even taking into account save points. This will be first time I have benched DDG but it seems to be consensus on here also

Have the same midfield and am also benching Groß. Morgan far less chance of attacking points than the others and CS probably less likely too. Leicester rarely keep them.

Do you think FPL should allow multiple teams? And if you don't do it already, would you start using multiple teams if it was allowed?

If you had to pay I think it would be fair (and would be allowed for obvious reasons), otherwise no as some smartass would develop a bot to pick millions of teams each week.

That's a good point, I hadn't even considered someone being able to enter a stupid amount of teams. Maybe if it was like Sky then and allowed a limited number instead.

One season I had 2 teams. One was my proper team and the other was my punt team. The only rule I had was both teams had to have 15 different players. My punt team outperformed my proper team 😳

Ha exactly the same has happened to me this season in Sky. My 'serious' team is about 250 points behind my team of punts. And now my team of punts has become my serious team.

I'm glad they don't allow multiple teams but, inevitably it happens. With quite significant weekly prizes, I do wonder how much this occurs and also how difficult it is to guard against.

I know it goes on and its up to mini-league admins to guard against it and report it. I've never really been a known victim of it, though for all I know there are teams ranked above me which are part of sets.

Ultimately, I'm philosophical about it. If it's not happening in my mini-league then there's a little I can do and so it doesn't concern me or get to me. I don't play FPL for prizes anyway - I'm not sure many really do.

As for whether things will change - I doubt it. Not heard wind of any change in policy.

I can see why Sky do it and, for them, it's a bigger nightmare due to cash prizes. I wonder how much admin that creates for them.

A few years back someone had 2 teams in the top 10. 'someone' reported it to FPL and FPL deleted one of his teams. They kept the team that was created first and deleted any multiples created after. It just unlucky for him that it was his higher ranked team that was deleted. Good move by FPL and at least they take it seriously once reported.

It's difficult to catch and FPL wouldn't have much of an incentive to catch them either. That's why there's social punishment for outed cheats like this. A bit like a child smearing faeces over the walls and throwing it at other classmates, they have done something that doesn't abide by the social norms and will not be liked for it. They do have a chance of redemption by changing although they will always be remembered as that weird kid.

If they continue to throw excrement people will continue to call them out on it and tell them it's disgusting. It's natural to punish people for doing something wrong. The issue comes in when the teacher facilitates the throwing of faeces and punishes the other kids for thinking and saying it's not right....

Okay, I was happy to have this topic discussed as I thought it was a reasonable topic.

But when it gets turned to cite a particular user and community member it's not on.

We all know what you're referring with this post and I've commented in the past on this.

Whatever alleged discretions took place, Fantasy Football Scout will not be used to "out" or "punish" the user.

It's not Fantasy Football Scout business it's totally with the FPL and, in fact, its in the past. I won't let the community be used in this way or for a user to continue to put up with such comments.

I was going to mail users involved in this but this will do instead. Thanks for the opportunity.

Discussion can take place on this via mark@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk but not on this thread or this site. I will respond when I have time around my working day and my family commitments.

Any user seen to perpetuate the sniping concerning the user in question re: multiple teams will risk moderation of their account.

              It stops now.

              Thanks.

Regardless of then, now - this site will not be used to police the issue and for a user to come under fire.

Report users to ISM and they will investigate. They are the judge and jury for multiple teams and will act if justified.

FFS is not here to host investigations or for accusations or punishments to be discussed or handed out.

Well if your going to take a stance and make a post about the matter make sure it's factually correct.

You's boys should all know he has multiple sides still. After all he's in AZs cash league (the one AZ wants to take a rake of the pot for all the hassle of running major looks).

Anyway the individual involved got booted by anyone running any cash leagues with a connection to ffs that had any moral fibre (this obviously didn't include AZ).

Just to clarify if Ruth says he is 29k or whatever it is he's claiming to be this year I'll be linking his team that says he's 750K.

I'll happily investigate any multiple team issue and support anyone looking to "sort" a user guilty of this. It's not part of our T&C's but equally I won't ignore it and will help if mini-league admins or users have concerns.

So, I'll check it out and if there's evidence of any user with multiple teams, then mail me and I'll do what I can to help.

However, I won't have the site used to as means of witch hunting a community member.

I agree its a serious issue but it needs to be sorted offline and with ISM.

I am asking for the accusations and slurs to be taking off the site and will act if this doesn't stop.

I've also emailed so we can continue this discussion offline.

This is complete and utter BS by the way.

Anyone that has an ounce of neutrality about them (and that is interested, which there is no reason anyone should be) would know that the team linked to my profile is the team that has always been linked to my profile because it's my team. I even have a blog elsewhere where I talk about it every week and have done for 2 seasons. So the idea that I am multi-teaming is just not the case and it never was.

It is true that I have helped various family members with their teams in the past and that when my father was quite ill I virtually managed it for him without input. But that's as far as it ever went. And this season it's my brother's turn to help him, my nephew didn't let his team go dead so is active and my wife is managing her own team with less help from me as well. Perhaps I'd just have been better to keep this to myself but that bridge was long since passed and people have kept photoshots. 🙄

Just because someone can evince a few teams with the same surname doesn't make them multiples. But the Nirvana crew care nothing about that. They are either just plain nasty or susceptible to being manipulated. Probably both in some cases.

So, people can attempt to get on the moral high ground but I have done nothing illegal and I don't even think out of order. Which makes this a blatant attempt to re-create a witch hunt by a bunch of bully boys who want a target to vent at. Lots of that online nowadays, more's the pity. Some kids kill themselves because of it. Fortunately I'm not a kid.

                        PS
If my father's team and my wife's team were, in fact, multiples it would have been so easy to delete the accounts and start this season with new ones under another name.
Know why I didn't do that? Because they aren't my accounts and they aren't my teams. 😕

You know, people don't need to have an axe to grind to not believe your story. Some people just connect your public persona with the story you are telling and think, "sorry, that's BS". Also, the bullying complaints are hard to take from someone whose responses to disagreement vary between contempt and character assassination.

Okay. Let us end this discussion - it's going nowhere.

The fact is that some users appear disgruntled that another may or may not have had multiple teams either now or in the past.

They have explained it and some choose not to accept.

But it's very simple from my perspective. I am not here to investigate this on the pages of FFS, I will so behind the scenes but I have yet to receive a single email on this subject from any user today.

Instead, I see users choosing to target another individual here on the site, almost as part of a campaign. This has been ongoing for quite while and I have previously posted and emailed users about this.

It simply cannot continue. The users who have any grievance need to email me, have it investigated and leave it to the folk behind the game to decide if any wrong-doing has taken place.

Further comments and snipes made towards the user - who could be totally innocent of the claims - cannot be tolerated, nor will baiting of the user to attempt to gain a reaction. Effectively trolling.

I have taken time to post on this this morning and will not comment further.

As I say, I've not had a single email on this despite my offer to help look into this matter. That suggests to me that the motive is not to sort a wrong-doing for the good of FPL or someone's mini-league, but to post here, disrupt this site and target an individual.

                          That must stop.

Being neutral - didn’t you one day post on here that you have one team for your cash mini leagues and one team for your OR, directly to AZ? I remember reading it on here.

Notwithstanding, I really don’t see the issue, there are two ways of playing the game and I think any player should be allowed to explore the options ...let’s be open about this, every game week it seems the top scorer is a new team for that game week that has played a chip, it can’t be policed and I am really not sure why it is an issue as ultimately it is probably harder to run multiple teams than concentrate on just one team ?

Live and let live ? But let’s also be honest about it ?

Also the only person that you are ultimately cheating is yourself as you are kidding yourself that you are actually good at this game.

It is akin to backing 9 horses in a 10 horse race and claiming you are brilliant pundit as you picked the winner

I had two teams a few years ago but after finishing first and second in PFL I figured it was unfair to the rest of you. Later I deleted one of those teams to give everyone else the chance of finishing second.

I'm totally against multiple teams and anyone proved to be doing it should be forced to watch Christian Benteke try to kick a football into a net.
          1) The pain of it going wrong (and boy has it gone wrong this season) should never be diluted
          2) how am i supposed to take a maverick theoretical post seriously when the author can try different things out on different team

-8 this week with a view to the DGW, thoughts?

        VVD -> Christensen
        Sterling -> Lingard
        Wilson -> Wood

Ideally I'd just do Wood & Christ but can't afford, Lingard leaves exact amount for Auba -> Kane next week..

            think that's a bit rash

            VVD to score this week
Sterling to chip in with a solitary goal
            Wilson hatty

I'd possibly do just VVD to Christensen for free this week and wait on the other two but it's your call.

No FH no WC. How does this plan sound?

        Gw33: Save ft
        Gw34: Auba + TC + Daniels + Goldson --> Barnes + Sanchez (C) + Lowton + Cech -8
        Gw35: Vardy --> Auba

The plan will leave me with a full on bench for BB in 34 and 11 playing in bgw35. Will get Kane in later on with a hit max two and TC him in 37. Burnley players will be handy for BB, bgw and has good fixtures later on as well.

        Current team:

        Lloris Goldson
        VVD Mustafi Jones Simpson Daniels
        Salah Sterling Willian Arnie TC
        Auba Firm Vardy

Sounds good. If you didnt have TC left I would recommend saving BB to GW37. It will be exiting/horrifying to see how much the players without WC, FH and TC will lose in the upcoming GWs (I only have BB left).

Rotten luck in defence this week, opted for Bailey over Smalling and then had Dunk as my first defender over Morgan so missed out there. Should I stuck with Bailey now or transfer out for somebody else?

Only United defenders I'd be happy to have anywhere near my team are De Gea and Valencia.

Young will carry on at LB but he's a midfielder and the CB spots are too 'up for grabs' to be certain of who starts.

I had Bailley in my draft team last week and paid the price. I just don't think they're anywhere near settled enough at the back to even risk it.

Jose could easily start Jones and Rojo against City. Who knows.

First WC draft. Anyone care to give some suggestions? I play to BB 34, FH 35 & TC 37.

          DDG - Ryan
          Davies - Robertson - Tarkowski - Lowton - Simpson
          Salah - Mahrez - Son - Gross - Kennedy
          Auba - Kane - Barnes

1.1 ITB to do Aub - Lukaku next week.

Wouldn't mind trying to get Sanchez in instead of Lukaku somehow but think it's easier just getting Lukaku in.

Sanchez or Hazard in for Salah (34)?

Decision to bin Salah for 34 has been made - question remains - for whom?

Only got .3 value made in Salah and the majority will not captain him this week so his propensity to punish for 34 is significantly less IMO.

Hi guys I need abit of feedback please, my team is the following and I have 1ft and 1.1 itb:

          Pope/ Joel Pereira

          Alonso/ Smalling/ Simpson Naughton/Rangel

          Salah/Sane/Mahrez/Mkhitaryan Loftus-Cheek

          Firmino/ Lukaku/ Wilson

I have used my Free Hit already and plan to wildcard GW 35 so essentially im building towards a double game week 34 team.

          Options are:

          1. Wilson to Barnes and Firmino to Aubameyang for -4 (i can't bring it Aub for free)
          2. Wilson to Murray
          3. Alonso to Lowton and Firmino to Kane for -4
          4. Save ft

          thanks guys!! 🙂

Is Heaton a threat? If so, Cech could be a option for 34 + 35.. then ship him afterwards if you need cash. Looks good even though I would change a couple of things.. (imo ddg is way to expensive)

Christensen, Dunk, Morgan. (Fixtures + Home)

            Gross (is at home)

Huddersfield can't score goals. Watford looked better attacking last week back in so I fancy Burnley to concede away from home.

Nope - already on Kane - Kaku - Vardy and will likely add one of Haz or Sanchez (for Salah)

Likely to be Hazard for price reasons to afford Lingard alongside him

Why would you want to. 1 of Sanchez + Lukaku is more than enough, and Chelsea are just going to get worse from here. Better to spread the money around.

United don't score enough to justify 24.0 on two attacking assets
