Scout Notes – Arsenal Triumph In Europe

Arsenal take a giant stride towards the Europa League semi-finals, but an injury to Henrikh Mkhitaryan forces owners to reconsider ahead of a very favourable domestic schedule.

Arsene Wenger’s side will have a 4-1 lead over CSKA Moscow to defend in the Russian capital next Thursday after a breathless first-half at The Emirates during which all five goals were scored.

There were two each for Alexandre Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey, three of which were set up by an imperious Mesut Ozil and the other by Hector Bellerin.

But an away goal for the Russians, following a series of defensive errors by the Gunners, and the Londoners’ poor away form mean the tie isn’t quite done and dusted yet.

Arsenal have kept just three league clean sheets on the road all season – even the likes of Crystal Palace, Swansea City and Brighton have proved more resilient – and they were lucky not to concede more than one goal against a CSKA side clearly intent on attacking.

That, in turn, led to a host of chances for the home team, who had nine shots on target, and Ramsey was unfortunate not to complete a hat-trick when his second-half shot hit the post.

The Welsh international now has nine goals in all competitions this season, seven of which have come at the Emirates – his best tally in home fixtures as an Arsenal player.

Wenger spoke post-match of a job half done, although the tie is probably more heavily skewed in his team’s favour than that, even after Arsenal’s capacity for self-destruction is taken into account.

Then again, they might have to travel to Moscow without Mkhitaryan, who went off just after the hour-mark last night with a knee injury.

Wenger’s immediate prognosis was bleak, particularly regarding Gameweek 33’s visit from Southampton.

“He has a knee problem, we don’t know how bad it is, we have to assess it tomorrow morning. He will certainly be out for Sunday.”

This has already had an impact on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) market- over the last 24 hours, the Armenian is second only to Mohamed Salah for sales.

And given the situation at the Gunners, the exodus concerning Mkhitaryan is likely to be the shape of things to come for other members of the side as well.

If Arsenal complete the Europa League job next week, they’ll move into the competition’s semi-finals, which will take place on April 26 and May 3.

Gameweek 35’s home fixture with West Ham precedes the tie and they’ll be away at Man United between the two legs.

Double Gameweek 37 then follows, with a home match against Burnley just two days after the second leg and a trip to Leicester City on the Wednesday rounding off a frenetic fortnight involving six fixtures.

Significantly, should the Gunners make the Europa League final, that takes place on Wednesday, May 16 – a mere three days after their final fixture of the season away at Huddersfield.

All of that means rotation of the side’s key players may well be inevitable, offsetting what is otherwise an attractive run-in from which the likes of Ramsey (3.8%) and Ozil (2.4%) could have emerged as excellent differentials.

Indeed, Ramsey has been rested for two of the last three Gameweeks, while Mkhitaryan was restricted to a role off the bench against Stoke last Sunday.

As mentioned above, the Gunners feature in Gameweek 35s’s reduced slate and have a Double Gameweek 37. However, it will be left to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to fly the Fantasy flag for Arsenal as the striker is ineligible for the Europa League.

The only problem for the 13.1%-owned striker is how much service he will receive from a side lacking many of its stars and without much motivation to successfully see out a season now riding entirely on European glory.

Arsenal’s immediate schedule (SOT new WHU) is sufficiently favourable that Aubameyang might be retained by some managers despite the lack of a Double Gameweek 34.

But, for many, the return to fitness of Harry Kane means the 10.8 invested in the Gunners striker could now be better spent elsewhere, particularly if Wenger decides to rotate heavily in his bid for European glory.

Considering Salah isn't probably going to be a captaincy option this week, I'm limited in my options...

I have Mahrez at Home to Newcastle

    OR

I could do Firmino + Vardy -----> Kane + Barnes

I would then captain Kane - Thoughts?

go for firmino + vardy -> kane + barnes

      captain kane

but depends on how much hit u r taking. If its more then mahrez captain could be good as well.

I am so stuck in the Willian VS Alonso debate

Sounds like both have equal rotation risks and kind of equal attacking threats.

CS points for Alonso should give him the nod?

I'm Freehitting next week, then playing XI chip-free in BGW35.

I guess Barnes makes most sense, keep in the side as third striker for DGW34 and therefore keep maximum funds ITB?

Was Smalling initially, but have DDG and Lingard but wan't Lukaku for the double, so cant have Smalling. Vert also has DGW and in 37 aswell so thought that he might be a good pick.

    A) Save, have 2 FTs for gw34 - can make Aub->Kane and Willian->Young(or other max 5m) for FREE.

    B) Use FT gw33 Salah->Alli. Gw34 spend -4 for Aub->Kane and Willian->Lingard.

If I do B, I'll have Alli who will play in gw33 and have two matches in gw34 and 37, which Salah doesn't. Also, Lingard better asset than Young or other 5m. Can get Salah in on 35 on the FH. Question is - is it worth -4 after all is said and done?

I was set against selling Salah, but I have come to think the argument is not a simple yes or no for everyone. For some people it's an obvious no, for some I think the case is quite compelling.

I'm on WC now and I need to save a further 0.4 to upgrade Aubameyang to Lukaku next week. I want to BB in 34 but I can't make a case for downgrading a single one of these players even though I will have to:

    DDG, Ryan,
    Lowton, Tarkowski, Christensen, Morgan, Chilwell
    Son, Lingard, Mahrez, Willian [Salah]
    Kane, Aubameyang, Barnes

    - Salah has six fixtures left to the likes of seven for the likes of Eriksen. Make that 5:7 if he misses this weekend as expected.
    - He has no doubles
    - I can cover one of his fixtures with a free hit
    - Other players 'cover' his fixtures with good fixtures.
    - If I really want him back for 38 I can do so, albeit at a 0.8m loss

I get why those who have already WC'd almost have to stick, but I don't think there is a single 'right' answer to this problem.

Similar team to my WC team, but I have a lower TV so went with Ibe + £1.3m ITB ratherr thsn Willian to upgrade Auba to Lukaku next week.

If I get rid of Salah will probably bring in Cork for Salah, Vardy for Barnes and Vertonghen for Chilwell.

I'm on WC now and very tempted to sell for Alli, especially if he looks like missing GW33.

Will get Salah back in 35 (FH) and 38 (FT).

34/37 I'll have a player with two fixtures to Salah's one and GW36 falls in the middle of Liverpool's next UCL tie, so could be a case of more rotation, depending on the result of the first leg.

Am I ok with this Wild Card team?

    De Gea, Ryan
    Alonso, Verthongen, Lowton, Duffy, Morgan
    Eriksen, Mahrez, Willian, Gross, Young
    Kane, Vardy, Barnes

Will do Eriksen -> Sanchez for GW34 (and obviously bench boost).

Any feedback highly appreciated. Thank you!

Young is an iffy pick when Ibe is cheaper

      Thanks guys...
Decided to go with Sanchez and Kane, instead of having a weak Midfield if I have to fit in Kane/Lukaku...
Ibe not nailed and bad fixtures in the DGW, that's why I try to find a "punt" midfield option for < 4.9m

Incidentally only getting half of a player's rise is a ridiculous rule. It just causes teams to gravitate towards 'template' and stagnate because people become to scared to make changes (or they simply can't afford to).

Just give us the full price rise but make rises happen half as frequently. Sorted.

      It's fine as-is.

IMO anything which encourages differentiation helps the game. It's why captaincy is such a welcome feature. The current price rise system does the opposite.

I don't think they will ever change it though.

That system would encourage template transfers rather than template players, which is far worse.

Not sure I understand the distinction?

Yeah and made worse this season by the manual intervention keeping certain players prices higher. It rewards template picks and managers who do not remove well owned players.
