Yusuf Sheikh wins FPL Crown

Yusuf Sheikh has claimed the Fantasy Premier League crown in the closest and most dramatic title race in memory.

The Tanzanian manager sealed his unlikely victory by six points from Fantasy Football Scout member Paul Gee, with long-time leader Bharat Dhody third.

Yusuf was ranked sixth before Sunday, some 33 points behind Bharat at the top.

As such, we had not included him in our earlier round-up of the top five contenders.

And when Marcos Alonso, Dele Alli and Gabriel Jesus were unexpectedly benched, he must have all but written off his chances of challenging for the crown.

But Yusuf’s final day performance was nothing short of remarkable from start to finish.

His final tally of 93 points was some 23 ahead of Paul in second and, incredibly, surpassed Bharat’s Gameweek total by 41.

A Triple Captain chip undoubtedly played a key role in his late surge as he was the only manager in the top ten to still have a chip remaining.

However, Yusuf’s decision to use this on Mohamed Salah had, initially, looked unwise, given that six other managers in the top ten also captained the Egyptian.

They included both Bharat and Paul.

So while Salah helped Yusuf to a 11-point advantage over that pair, the midfielder was by no means the key player in Sunday’s matches.

It was his differentials who really delivered.

That started with Marcus Rashford, who struck an early goal to hand Yusuf an initial boost. No other manager in the top ten owned the Man United striker.

Salah’s goal was then followed by an assist to help Yusuf gain a further edge via his Triple Captain. However, it was surely Lukasz Fabianski’s penalty save at the Liberty Stadium, just a minute later, that catapulted him into contention.

At that point Paul Gee had established a lead, thanks to clean sheets from Burnley pair Matt Lowton and James Tarkowski.

A goal from Wilfried Zaha – a Gameweek 38 signing for Aaron Ramsey – then re-ignited Yusuf’s charge, before the Clarets conceded at Turf Moor to topple Paul from the summit.

With Fabianski, Rashford and Zaha furthering their role as differentials with bonus points, Yusuf also benefited from DeAndre Yedlin’s clean sheet from his bench as both Alonso and Ben Davies failed to be given minutes.

That ensured victory over Paul by just eight points once the bonus points were confirmed.

With 73 points on the day, the runner-up can count himself unfortunate to miss out when Burnley’s clean sheet points were cruelly lost in the closing stages.

Paul’s decision to sell Alli for Salah proved a canny move, but it was ultimately not enough to fire him to the title, having started Sunday 20 points off the pace.

Meanwhile Bharat – who had led the way since Gameweek 21 – suffered an early blow when the teamsheets were revealed.

He was missing seven players, either with injuries or through being benched.

His decision to sell Mahrez, and not Alli, for Salah might also haunt him. The Algerian’s 13 points would have seen him tied at the top, though total transfers (43 v 41) would have eventually settled it in Yusuf’s favour regardless.

And nobody can deny the new champion his glory.

To produce 93 points on the final day – some 23 more than any other rival in the top ten – is a remarkable achievement, and one deserving of winning the FPL crown.

Congratulations to Yusuf on his win, and to all the challengers who helped to produce such a memorable day.

We hope to have further reaction, including interviews with the top managers, over the next few days.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Did anyone end up using a 3 way defender rotation after about 4 or 5 gameweeks?

Can't wait for August where everyone starts going on and on about them again

      Nope. Went from 4x4.5 -> 2 premiums + 2x4.5 quite early.

This is it, it only ever gets talked about in preseason and then disappears.

It disappears because you get the hang of inform teams - while 3man rotation focuses solely on fixtures not taking form into the account, as you only have preseason to go from - and premiums that aren't rotation risks.

No don’t think even I used it after 1st wildcard. But it’s a decent strategy up till the 1st wildcard till then we can earn money and get more info on which teams are looking good defensively.

Yeah, you could be right there, maybe its best to set up a team to just get off to a great start and plan a GW 4 or so wildcard.

I started with three of Southampton’s backline (Forster, Stephens and Yoshida). It worked well actually to start with, who would have thought how badly they would end.

I also had Kolasinac and Dawson (I played 4-3-3) who also did well at the start. Crazy to think that looking back now with a player who spent most of his time on the fringes of the squad and the other four players all being part of relegation battle.

One lesson learned from this season is that always have 2 premium defenders. Over the course of the season they will provide you valuable points.

I started with Alonso, Kolasinac, Bavies, Bertrand and Cedric

      https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/team/4682/event/1

If I ever rotate, I don't restrict it to defenders. I might by a mid-priced midfielder, for example, only in the knowleadge that I can cover his poor fixture(s), and that can go three-ways too 🙂

After an absolutely torrid season for me, I can’t help but feel trolled by many decisions made that, even in hindsight, I would still say we’re the sensible choice.

Two in particular in the season run in have absolutely destroyed my season, and have meant the difference between winning my ML and disappointingly throwing it away:

Valencia over smalling on my GW32 wildcard

    Mahrez + vardy > Jesus + Sterling (-4) ahead of GW37

These two decisions alone cost me 64 points (and consequently, my ML very comfortably)

Other painful ones for me would be:

    Lukaku over Auba on WC

Selling alonso ahead of GW37 after a long string of blanks, only for him to haul 15 points (that one hurt bad)

Willian and Son on WC (ouch)

What a cruel game this can be!

On to next season I guess, there’s only upwards from here for me 🙂

The only one I can criticise you for is Valencia to Smalling. I think you listened to FFS too much here. I feel like I was the only one harping on that since Smalling returned in GW23 he hadn't missed a single fixture (and was playing well) but people kept hyping Jones (for BAPs) and Bailly.

Started the season with the aim of top 10k as I just missed out last year. Managed 3.3k at the end and win in the cash ML ($300) with huge 160+ lead.

Big thanks to everyone in FFS! See you next year!

That a bit odd, I thought they would have removed the -1

If the -1 stands then surely that means he participated, if that was the case he shouldnt have been subbed off .

The start is everything in this game.

By Christmas or so most of us have very similar teams and its hard to make up serious ground on other users. Had a poor start myself...GW1 team:

    Foster
    Davies Stephens Ake Luiz Dann
    Alli Mane
    Jesus Lacazette Aguero

    Good old hindsight...

Is the guy who only buys players under 10 mill around? Haven't caught him on here for a while, he was doing excellently last time I saw him post...

Bailly -> Smalling for a hit was a beauty. Willian -> Sane in 37 and Smalling -> Robo in 38 no slouches either.

Worse would be anything from Mahrez. Getting him in, averaging less than 2 points per game, then selling before avg 7+ ppg. Buying him again for him to average 2.1 ppg then selling for a hit in 37 for Raz.

I know it was only for finishing 7th or 8th, but we two have always being fighting to be the best for about 6 seasons. So it is purely for honor and glory (or for the looser to be friendly shamed and humiliated).
And YES the yellow also cost him BAPS from what I could understand.

Relax and enjoy time away from our teams.

I didn’t have a great season by my standards so I’m looking forward to the rest and being able to support England without worrying if we keep a clean sheet or who scores and assists.

Then nearer the time once the prices are announced i’m sure I’ll feel refreshed and ready to kick off a new season.

Definitely looking forward to a bit of a break. Don't want to let the channel completely die though so I might do the odd stream about the World Cup - won't be discussing fantasy strategy for the most part though, I don't take the Euro/WC games that seriously.

I did Euros 2 years ago and won work league but barely any effort was needed.

Yeah it’s always the same with the Euro/World Cup games. Too easy to win if you put time into it.

Yeah I completely get where you are coming from, although I assume like last season even without many/any videos we will all be back watching you once the prices have been released etc. and you are back streaming.

Thoughts on WC fantasy? I never quite get in to it really, may just do the research and then gamble on games I fancy - so can ignore games I don't want to be emotionally invested in

How do we solve the chip 'crisis'?

Personally I like the idea of having chips which must be used during the first half of the season.

However, I think that having two lots of the current chips would be a little much (I.e. 8 total).

Think I'd like 4 chips + 2 WC's to be used over the season 2+1 in each half.

I'd prefer if there were no duplicates in those 4 - to maximise strategic planning.

    So:
    2x WC
    1x FH
    1x BB
    1x TC
1x new chip (double defence chip?)

Really frustrated with how I finished the year. Bounced around the same 400 places between 24-38 and my final transfers robbed me of a best ever finish. Martial over Zaha will hurt for a few days.

Looking forward to a nice break from FPL.!

That's my main lesson learnt for 18-19. Don't get lured by fringe players in big teams becoming nailed because of injuries etc. I would much rather have a talisman in Zaha than a fringe player like Martial, even if both are guaranteed 90 mins.

Lost two of my mine leagues by 4 points, despite by -12 generating a whole 1 point extra (12 including Salah captaincy)

Glass half full, it’s quite nice to think that I wouldn’t have done anything different on the last day, so those that beat me well deserved

did he really miss that much? first three games of the season from what I can see.... also feel many of the other big hitters all had a spell on the sidelines to so its no excuse. he does has been doing season on season off thing for a while now and its why he will ver be in that upper echelon of players because its just not consistent. in the last three seasons overall I feel Willian has outshone him.

true but haz has done this with different managers before. I dont think its down to just tactics, you have to question his attitude. he should be dominating a game against players of the quality newcastle have, no matter whats on the line or where he's playing.

Somehow managed to turn things around in the last few gw's and creep to a 80k OR and win my cash ML overturning a 24 pt deficit on the final day..

Some people are incentivised by the prospect of winning money. The on money league that I was in was certainly more competitive than my other leagues. Though, yeah, I understand you don't care.

Probably because most care most about winning that one. I was in 3 leagues, and lost the lead in 2 of them on the final day, but it didn’t bother me as I held on in the cash one and had made my transfers solely to block my rival in that league

      1. boc610
        • 12 Years

i do think people oversestimate how competitive their leagues are overall. id assume their is a cash incentive in the majority anyway and most of the people who threw in at the start of the season forgot they did. so id say some care, not most We had a cash incentive in ours but in reality there was a about 8-10 that reality care-and most likely use this site- from about 35 people. cash or not, your going to get people who just arent bothered, the dreaded "casuals" often mentioned.
