Yusuf Sheikh wins FPL Crown

Yusuf Sheikh has claimed the Fantasy Premier League crown in the closest and most dramatic title race in memory.

The Tanzanian manager sealed his unlikely victory by six points from Fantasy Football Scout member Paul Gee, with long-time leader Bharat Dhody third.

Yusuf was ranked sixth before Sunday, some 33 points behind Bharat at the top.

As such, we had not included him in our earlier round-up of the top five contenders.

And when Marcos Alonso, Dele Alli and Gabriel Jesus were unexpectedly benched, he must have all but written off his chances of challenging for the crown.

But Yusuf’s final day performance was nothing short of remarkable from start to finish.

His final tally of 93 points was some 23 ahead of Paul in second and, incredibly, surpassed Bharat’s Gameweek total by 41.

A Triple Captain chip undoubtedly played a key role in his late surge as he was the only manager in the top ten to still have a chip remaining.

However, Yusuf’s decision to use this on Mohamed Salah had, initially, looked unwise, given that six other managers in the top ten also captained the Egyptian.

They included both Bharat and Paul.

So while Salah helped Yusuf to a 11-point advantage over that pair, the midfielder was by no means the key player in Sunday’s matches.

It was his differentials who really delivered.

That started with Marcus Rashford, who struck an early goal to hand Yusuf an initial boost. No other manager in the top ten owned the Man United striker.

Salah’s goal was then followed by an assist to help Yusuf gain a further edge via his Triple Captain. However, it was surely Lukasz Fabianski’s penalty save at the Liberty Stadium, just a minute later, that catapulted him into contention.

At that point Paul Gee had established a lead, thanks to clean sheets from Burnley pair Matt Lowton and James Tarkowski.

A goal from Wilfried Zaha – a Gameweek 38 signing for Aaron Ramsey – then re-ignited Yusuf’s charge, before the Clarets conceded at Turf Moor to topple Paul from the summit.

With Fabianski, Rashford and Zaha furthering their role as differentials with bonus points, Yusuf also benefited from DeAndre Yedlin’s clean sheet from his bench as both Alonso and Ben Davies failed to be given minutes.

That ensured victory over Paul by just eight points once the bonus points were confirmed.

With 73 points on the day, the runner-up can count himself unfortunate to miss out when Burnley’s clean sheet points were cruelly lost in the closing stages.

Paul’s decision to sell Alli for Salah proved a canny move, but it was ultimately not enough to fire him to the title, having started Sunday 20 points off the pace.

Meanwhile Bharat – who had led the way since Gameweek 21 – suffered an early blow when the teamsheets were revealed.

He was missing seven players, either with injuries or through being benched.

His decision to sell Mahrez, and not Alli, for Salah might also haunt him. The Algerian’s 13 points would have seen him tied at the top, though total transfers (43 v 41) would have eventually settled it in Yusuf’s favour regardless.

And nobody can deny the new champion his glory.

To produce 93 points on the final day – some 23 more than any other rival in the top ten – is a remarkable achievement, and one deserving of winning the FPL crown.

Congratulations to Yusuf on his win, and to all the challengers who helped to produce such a memorable day.

We hope to have further reaction, including interviews with the top managers, over the next few days.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

This was the year of the casual, so many good players with good fixtures fell short, and players like mahrez and vardy delivered away at spurs, it was a bizarre year compared to last year

Just want to take this opportunity to thank everyone on here in helping me this season. I managed to win my 2 main mini leagues, one of which a cash one where I was 140ish points behind at the turn of the year, and for the first time all season went top today.

Hope many of you had successful days and seasons, clawing back gaps to victory and so forth.

Can't wait for next season and thanks once again!

He just seems to fulfill the role of a little boy filling in for the real goalkeeper. I don't want to think that, but he isn't very strong at the normal GK stuff like collecting and saving the ball. That said, I get 100% of my info from highlights.

198k rank. Started okay, but took too many risks early on, which cost me and ruined my season around November/Christmas completely.

The biggest trolls on this game are Hazard and Kane for me. Especially Kane, had him in times where he's done nothing and missed out on most of his braces pretty much. I wont be getting them in next season.

I didn't have a brace from a captain until GW21, which wasn't nice. But oh well, theres always next season. Hopefully it will be better. I may go back to being a casual next season, seemed like I enjoyed the game a lot more when I cared less.

    Have a good summer all.

38k finish and runner up in mini league for the 3rd season running (one day I'll win the thing). Disappointing as was 10 points ahead going into this GW but rival had PVA & Robo so buried me in the end.

Thanks to all those who patiently offered advice and guidance throughout the season, always good to bounce ideas around in here. Enjoy the world cup people, a brief reprieve from FPL addiction 🙂

I was 10 ahead and came runner up by 7. Feel your pain, bro.

One fewer goal from Salah and I'd have won by 3 (and all other various types of combinations of points accruement that could have been different in my favour! haha)

OR 11502, with -80 pts, still pains me losing 21 pts in gw 35 FH, my predicitons this season was around 70-90% of the time right but i didn’t follow it all the time and kept blocking my opponents in ML’s, also i regret it somehow, i might have ended up in top 2-3k or something

They won't get massive drops as they will still be integral cogs to their teams attack. They will also have guaranteed pitch time.

Big droppers will be the likes of Coleman Benteke Siggy etc

Also their prospect become first team player. Butland 5.0 this season is one example I can remember. He only played 450 minutes (5 games) in 2016/17 so we expected him being priced at 4.5, but it didn't.

In general, the defences of the mid table teams need to drop. Leicester, Southampton, Everton, Bournemouth - none of them deserve to be consistently 5.0 across the board.

Hazard' got to many 200+ season to start lower than 9.5?
      Morata might drop to 8.5
Sanchez could get priced at 10.0 I guess.

I actually dont think that its the players dropping that might become the biggest bargains, but rather those that dont increase.

-Leroy Sane should be priced the same next season, with Sterling and KDB pcking up 10.5-11.0 pricetags, he might be the best atacking option.

-Allthough he was enroute to become the first def to push 200pts after 25gms, Alonso ended up at a measly 165pts. He's a player that could very well get 15+ goals/assists + 15-20cs. With stats like that, he's close to something like a 9.5mid, but based on how it ended, he looks likely to keep his 7.0 valuation

-Sadio Mane is another player who might be considered a bargain. He surely wont rise, but dont expect him to drop much either. Lost a lot of games, but in terms of picking pts hes been apprx as effective as Christian Eriksen.

-Very curious to see their price, classification, and role within their respective teams, but if the two latter stays the same, and their price dont push past 8.0, then surely Arnie and Zaha will offer great value.

I expect Hazard to be 10.0 and Sanchez 10.5. I think Lukaku will drop down to 11.0. Can also see Alli dropping down to 8.5.

I don't think Hazard will drop much. Doubt he'll be lower than 10m.

Ozil at 8.0-8.5m could provide value if he stays fit. Missed a lot of games this season.

I agree with Sanchez/Hazard, and some answers Ozil.

Coleman (was 6.5) might be around 5.5 next season IMO, let's see if Everton managed to appoint a more attacking-minded manager. Could be gold.

Mahrez to Sterling hurts a bit along with that last gasp winner from Jesus taking away a Cedric CS, haven't done the numbers but I reckon it's cost me a PB. Oh well, successful season overall but some scope for improvement all the same.

Terrible season for me. Started by investing in Palace quite heavily because Zaha and PVA are just class FPL picks...they just are...Benteke may have been a step too far. Funny how the two former picks actually proved to be right in the end.

They'll be top of my list again next season.

You might be priced out of Zaha like we were with Siggy this season. Might have to wait for form to jump on him, especially if he moves to a bigger club. Let's hope the price comes out before the move.....or vice versa if he moves to a club where he's likelt to be benched at before there's an injury before GW1 so we can be sure he will be nailed at a lower price that he would be if he was nailed when the prices were resleased! 😀

Exact same - I was championing Zaha pre-season but then he got injured and I always had reasons for not bringing him in. Palace just always had average fixtures / no doubles. Zaha's PPG in the end was incredible!
