FFS Cup

Fantasy Football Scout Cup – Winner

We can now reveal who has won our Fantasy Premier League cup following Gameweek 38’s dramatic final.

2Eyed Turk (rank 30,382) will join TH14, donnellyc, Gribude, Ninja_Fit_Saints, Wild Rover, Mark, A Manager Has No Name, Sleepysi and myself among the list of previous winners after a closely fought final against 17,402 placed Boxing Can Girouds.

He prevailed by just a single point (53-52) after making a successful double points hit. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey and West Brom keeper Ben Foster all came in, with Salah handed the captaincy.

This proved a crucial decision in affecting the outcome. The trio scored a combined 19 points, whereas the players they replaced – Spurs midfielder Dele Alli and Manchester United duo David De Gea and Jesse Lingard – earned just a solitary point between them after succumbing to rotation.

Boxing Can Girouds’ points hit proved less successful, with new recruits Wilfried Zaha and Roberto Firmino scoring 12 points between them, two less than Leicester striker Jamie Vardy and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, who made way. His downfall was cemented by the bold decision to ignore Salah and hand the armband to Firmino, who, unlike the Egyptian, failed to register any attacking returns.

Despite earning double-digit points hauls from Zaha, West Ham’s Marko Arnautovic and Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Boxing Can Girouds’ unsuccessful attempt to find a differential option among Liverpool’s ranks was decisive.

Congratulations to 2Eyed Turk, who wins a £150 Amazon voucher and Boxing Can Giroud can still hold his head up high after a remarkable Cup run, in which he earns a £100 Amazon voucher.

The third place play off final was another close contest, with 2,077 ranked Batmaniac beating 17,070 placed Pete’s Blair (69-63) and winning a £50 Amazon voucher. His points hit to bring in Arnautovic and Liverpool stopper Loris Karius for Chelsea’s benched midfielder Willian and the non-playing De Gea proved canny.

Pete’s Blair also profited from his points hit swoop for Salah and Reds centre back Virgil Van Dijk for Vincent Kompany, who failed to make the pitch, and Eden Hazard, who suffered a disappointing final day defeat at St James’ Park to Newcastle. However, these smart moves were not enough to overcome Pete by the end of Sunday’s matches.

What are people’s thoughts on here about Shelvey for the 23 man England squad?

Watching him week in week out I honestly feel he should be on that plane. He’s been absolutely fantastic

If it was based on ability alone I would agree.

His temperament lets him down though and I'm not sure if he gets on with Southgate and the rest of the players/staff in the camp.

England's most creative visionary IMO, only issue is that Hendo won't be dropped and Gaz will play 3 at the back so, two holders is too much.

I agree, great player but it only takes one ignoramus cretin to disrupt morale. If he's learnt his lessons and doesn't act like a plonker I hope Southgate takes him.

  5. FPL withdrawal league - Eliteserien GW10-GW30

Suffering from Fantasy Premier League withdrawal? I'm setting up a new league for Fantasy Eliteserien (Norwegian league) to shorten the waiting time until the next FPL season. The code for the FPL Withdrawal League is 1170-14080 and you can find the English version of the game here: https://en.fantasy.eliteserien.no/

The scoring in the league will start from GW10. The GW10 deadline is in two days (16th of May). This is the perfect chance to test out the alternative chips like Park the Bus and Attack! Attack! The new league will obviously favour new players as they will have all chips and WC available.

Head over to the Eliteserien community articles to read about the game, and to get help setting up a team.

The latest article (GW10 preview will be out soon): https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/05/11/fantasy-eliteserien-2018-gameweek-9-preview/

MrKlin made an excellent article on Fantasy Eliteserien (and the Swedish game too) compared to FPL: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/05/09/how-scandinavia-is-transforming-fantasy-football/

English version of the game available here: https://en.fantasy.eliteserien.no/

      Good stuff Niemi, joined 🙂

For any considering joining I'd really recommend. It reminds me of when I first started playing FPL and the chips are interesting. Same scoring too, which makes it easier to pick up.

          - Live rank update (overall rank, gameweek rank, minileague rank)
          - "Experts" handing out bonus instead of BPS system.
          - Other chips (2x points from all your defenders, 2x points from all your forwards and 2x points from your captain and vice captain)

          That's the major, technical differences.

            From an English FPL point of view;
            - I like the live rank update - I'd also love to be able to chose a "rank" in the game rather than use the site that's handed out around here (not sure what it's called) where you can find the points to get to a certain rank.
            - Who would these "experts" be as some of these pundits are farcical.
            - I like those chips pretty cool. Too many could make it messy though. Would be cool to see like six chip options and you have to pick three of the six or pick three at the start of the season.

It's the commentators that's the "experts". Definitely some pros and cons to this. On one hand a player that has played well can be rewarded with bonus, even without getting any returns. On the other hand it's a subjective system, and it's really dependant on who's handing out the bonus points.

The Swedish game has a more complicated system that's replaced the classic bonus system. I'm not playing that game, but MrKlin explained it (and everything else) in the article linked above.

The live rank update is a very sweet feature, only works because the league is smaller.

You can literally see your OR and ML rank change with every goal that goes in!

      For what it's worth all...
Keep Iheanacho and Diabate on your radar preseason. If Leicester keep Puel and give him charge of the transfer window, or get in another manager ASAP and do the same for him, their defensive problems should be sealed. With Mahrez likely gone, they'll have to step up and at a very cut price (6.5 max for Nacho, and anything more than 5.0 for Diabate would be very unfair).

Leicester are an attacking side - the loss of Mahrez could hinder them in that regard, but I honestly don't see them losing any other integral parts of their team (be genuinely surprised if for example Maguire and Ndidi left, consisting Leicester's tenacity at keeping their players and the fact that both need regular football at this point in their careers). A decent preseason should see Iheanacho and Diabate (amongst maybe some others, keep an eye out for Ricardo Pereira if Leicester somehow manage to snag him) become real budget options next season.

Dubravka came in during Jan transfer window right or started playing off the back of a Newcastle 'keeper injury and the tables go by points per minute, probably why he "out-scored" Pope.

Isn't the whole points of Points per Minute that you see how they perform regardless of gametime? The fact that Dubravka came in during January shouldn't really change the validity of the comparison much, as PPM is the closest thing to getting to see how two players on uneven gametime eould perform if they had played more evenly

Yes it is but for example if you look at the West Brom caretaker manager's record since he took over it's fantastic, I think it's one loss in six so by those calculations he'd only lose 6 maybe 7 games in an entire league season (not happening with WBA) so the longer/more minutes you play the less likely it becomes.

An example would be "super subs" who come on for 5 minutes at the end of a game when the other team is knackered and gets a goal whereas the main striker played 85 minutes wearing them out.

I get what you mean, I'm just saying I assume that is why Dubravka out-scores Pope.

Fair point. If it isn't Dubravka it's De Gea, as I don't think a likely 0.5 difference between Heaton/Pope and DDG the price is worth lowballing for

To be fair I had Pope/DDG for most of the season, everyone said it was a waste of funds but think I had DDG all season and picked Pope up very cheap ahead of the curve so I earned "team value" (irrelevant) out of it and then always had a good option of rotating (often getting it wrong, lol!)

As someone who held kane for a lot of the season his awful ppmpm means i would probably have been better going without. Generally seems to have been good value in mid priced defenders from top half sides and midfielders have dominated these rankings. Certainly adds a few names to the watchlist for next season.

I about to lose my mind here.

I'm at work and were talking about doing a sweepstake for the World Cup and how to organise it.

The guy that wants to run it started putting teams in a hat and was about to go round the office asking "Do you want to play? It's £5 per pick" - so I said first of all you need to confirm who wants to play, and then you need to do a draw for which order everyone gets to pick.

He said that doesn't matter because every pick is random. But I explained that everyone who agrees to play is going to want to pick first because you'll have a 100% chance of getting Brazil, Germany, Spain etc.

He still didn't agree because he said it's random for everyone who plays, and others said the same. I told them that because there's 32 teams every pick ahead of your own reduces the chance of getting Brazil by 3.2%

I said let's pick numbers from 1-32 to decide which order we go in and they said "Well how do we decide who gets to pick their number first?" it's a continous cycle lol.

        He's absolutely right.

        IF

You don't reveal who you have got after you draw your name. If I know all the good teams have gone I might not want to take part. The process of the draw is irrelevant to the statistics.

        I've had similar issues in the past so I do this now;

I send an email around asking who's interested, then first to respond gets first pick. I ask them not to tell anyone who they have picked. If there's any teams left in the hat, lowest FIFA ranked team picked gets first choice on next pick.

I know FIFA rankings aren't great but seems a fair way of doing it.

Honestly there is no need for this - you're creating extra effort for yourself. There is no harm in drawing sequentially as long as everyone is signed up in advance. The odds are completely identical.

Kane not scoring in August is a statistical anomaly, though of course the longer it goes on it becomes a psychological block for him. I'm looking forward to him scoring his first so that he gets that particular monkey off his back.

exactly. There is no reason at all why he should not score in August but it will/has become a mental thing and that seems to be something that really affects a lot of strikers. He scores one and I think it'll mean revert. Top scorer in August!

Good comment... could well be depending on prices. But thing is (as I said yesterday), for all the "Kane has had a poor season comments", he's only scored 7 pts less than last season but more than the season before that. I guess the difference is that he started at 12.5, 11.9 the season before and 10.2 the season before that. I don't know if his price will be reduced that much. Salah will presumably go up a lot, 10.5 maybe (I'm guessing).

I think his "poor season" is because Dele hasn't been as good and Salah has given us another perspective. Fewer assists for Kane this season, perhaps because of his team mates' off-targetness.. but Kane has had his best goalscoring season ever this season (if you include his tractor-beam shoulder goal). I just think that the money goes on Salah and Sterling, whatever the price.

I agree that money goes on Salah and Sterling because of human nature and what I observe on here and from transfer stats. Whoever got the most points previous week is immediately put in by casuals and said people in August, which includeds a lot of people who don’t know much will say “I know Salah, he was top scorer, he’s going in”. Will be the same with DDG. There’s a myopia regarding price.

Also with 32 teams and £5 per pick the pot would be £160. The guy running it thinks we should do £110 to the winner and £50 to the runner up.

I said how about £100 to the winner, £40 to the runner up, and £10 to the two that got knocked out in the semis.

That way it makes it more exciting for people who got average teams because you still have something to hope for.

Also they were talking about not telling anyone what team they picked until the World Cup has finished. I said what's the point of that? The sweepstake is meant to make the football more exciting to watch.

If you wanna play it like that you might as well forget the football and do an office number lottery for flip sake.

I run it so that whoever picks the worst team in the competition gets their money back. But I agree, if it's going to be an inclusive event there needs to be a greater spread of prizes.

key to spreading prizes absolutely key, in this and in cash ML for FPL IMHO. My one has a manager of the month too and a number of prizes so there's always an incentive and you don't end up with ghost teams.

Agreed. Basically the higher the proportion of casual players, the kinder the prize structure has to be. In a sweepstake, where there is the possibility that people will only care about the competition because sweepstake prizes are at stake, the structure has to be as inclusive as possible.

I hope they are kept away from our Dave but i am sure they will try their best to secure his signature.

They should go after Courtios seen as Chelsea have missed out on CL football and he might be open to a move away.

Id have to disagree, one of the most underapreciated goalies of our time. Saved us countless of times.

With that being said, think Daves heart is in Madrid and Florentino wont settle for Courtois. He will want the best of the best.

A very nice little bonus after coming 3rd in my cash league. Just proves that anyone can win these cups, and can prove a much needed refocus if a season is teetering out. Thanks to all for your help throughout the season as well, lurking this site has certainly helped over the years 🙂

Not that it matters, but I really hate the abbreviation of laugh out loud.

You can blame BF for many things, but I don't think that is one of them 😉

Who are your early World Cup fantasy targets? Easy groups for many of the big teams going to be very hard to choose

Salah, Brazil and Germany. Possibly Spain depending on which Spain will turn in. Value picks from Poland, Korea, Iceland, Uruguay, Nigeria and Japan. Keep an eye on France and Belgium. Go for the teams primary set piece takers.

Aim will be to pick players unlikely to be rotated for easy/final group games. Been stung a number of times by this in previous tournaments.

This year was my best ever finish - 2,308 overall. And I came from 12 points back going into the final gameweek to win the Eurogamer mini-league.
