Metrics – Appraising The Chip Strategies

With another season now passed I want to reflect on it and analyse and in particular the variety of strategies used when activating the Fantasy Premier League chips.

We had two major Double Gameweeks this season, 34 and 37, and we also had two Gameweeks that featured a significant number of postponements, namely 31 and 35.

There was much debate during the season about how to approach these Gameweeks with the chips in mind.

One of the areas of contention was whether to use the Free Hit for the blanks in Gameweek 31 or 35 (or even in one of the Double Gameweeks).

There was also plenty of debate on whether to use the second Wildcard early in the second part of the season or perhaps just before one of the Double Gameweeks.

Finally, there was doubt about which Double Gamweeek was best suited to the Bench Boost and the Triple Captain.

I hope to give some insight on all of these questions.

The Methodology

I believe that each of these queries cannot be answered in isolation.

For example, to know whether the Free Hit in Gameweek 31 was better or worse than in Gameweek 35 it is not enough to look only at the results from those weeks, because the deployment of the Free Hit chip is a part of a bigger plan affected by the Gameweeks around it.

Therefore, I decided to look at how managers performed in the last 10 Gameweeks of the season collectively.

These start with Gameweek 29, which was around the time the chip debates kicked-off, with many preparing for the Gameweek 31 blanks either with transfers or with the activation of the Free Hit.

To avoid making the data biased with only success stories I gathered data for a random sample of 25,000 active managers in the top one million, recording when they used their chips and what total score they achieved in the last 10 Gameweeks.

The following are therefore not only statistics for top managers but for everyone who kept playing until Gameweek 38.

Hopefully, with such a big sample the results will be representative of the effect of different chip strategies on overall performance.

I will first present the statistics of each chip used, separately. Then I will show the results for the most used and most successful combined chip strategies.

The Free Hit

members

30.0% of Free Hits were played in Gameweek 31 while 12.61% were activated in Gameweek 35.

We see that the average scores achieved by both set of managers are very close, with a difference of only two points in favour of the Gameweek 35 Free Hits.

So, it is possible that playing the Free Hit in either Gameweek was equally effective.

We also see that managers who activated the chip in any other week suffered some damage. Even the 4.74% who used it in Double Gameweek 34 lost around 20 points.

The results suggest that the Free Hit was best deployed in a Gameweek with postponements, at least based on this first season.

The Wildcard

members
members

The majority of second Wildcards were either activated as soon as the chip became available in Gameweek 22 or right before the Double Gameweeks.

We see that the most successful use of the Wildcard chip was in Gameweek 32 (599.5 points), followed by Gameweek 36 (596.6) and Gameweek 33 (592.3).

All these successful users were right before the Double Gameweeks.

There were some arguments before Double Gameweek 34 about whether to Wildcard directly after the blanks, so in Gameweek 32, or wait one week and Wildcard in 33.

The numbers suggest that waiting that extra week was not the best move and caused managers to lose around seven points on the Gameweek 32 Wildcard, while the managers who Wildcarded late in Gameweek 36 suffered only a three-point loss on average to that group.

The Bench Boost

members
members

The most popular Gameweek for Bench Boosts was Double Gameweek 37 (28.72%), not 34 (22.18%). However, the scores suggest that managers who activated Bench Boost in Gameweek 34 are the ones who earned more points over the final push.

They got 7.4 more points than Gameweek 37 Bench Boosters, and at least 20 more points more than managers who Bench Boosted at any other window, outside of a Double Gameweek.

The Triple Captain

members
members

Double Gameweek 37 was managers’ favourite window for activating the Triple Captain chip (31.24%), followed by Double Gameweek 34 (17.85%).

The scores, however, suggest that it was the 7.73% managers who activated it in the final Gameweek who fared best.

But the difference between that and the Gameweek 37 case is negligible; generally, managers who used the Triple Captain in Gameweeks 37 and 38 achieved comparable results.

In summary, individual chip results suggest that the best Gameweeks to use the chips this season have been:

Free Hit: 31 and 35.
Wildcard: 32 and 36.
Bench Boost: 34.
Triple Captain: 37 and 38.

But this doesn’t tell the whole story. There might be a combination of the chips used together that resulted in even stronger results.

The Collective Chip Strategy

Now let’s look at the more accurate picture with all the chip strategies in play.

I will present the most used chip strategies for active managers this season and their results. I only included strategies that a reasonable amount of managers used so that the statistics remain meaningful.

As an example, many odd strategies were implemented by a maximum of ten managers in my sample, those I omitted because their average would not be a good indicator of strategy effectiveness. This means that there could be other potential strategies, which almost no one actually used, that would have fared better

The most used strategies are those much discussed on Fantasy Football Scout which consisted of Wildcarding in either of Gameweeks 32 or 33, then Bench Boosting in 34, Free Hitting in 35 and Triple Captaining in 37. However, they were not the most successful strategies.

Instead, the strategy that won the award for the most effective is:

“Strategy A” which was to Free Hit in 31 to cover the postponements, followed by the use of transfers to load up on Gameweek 34 Double Gameweek players, then Bench Boost in Gameweek 34, Wildcard in 35 to acquire Man City and Arsenal assets, then Triple Captain in Gameweek 37.

I didn’t see this tactic used too much, but managers who did use it scored an average of 10 more points than the more popular strategies.

In hindsight, it does seem like a very efficient plan, particularly when other popular strategies missed out Man City and Arsenal assets in Gameweek 36 and even 37, a problem that “Strategy A” solved.

The second best strategy was even less popular and was deployed by only 0.2% of active managers.

It is “Strategy B”, which is very similar to the most popular route or “Strategy D”, but with the use of the Triple Captain chip in Gameweek 38 instead of 37.

Again, in hindsight, this makes sense as most of the Triple Captain candidates in Double Gameweek 37 failed, while Gameweek 38 was, as usual, high scoring.

Next come two very close strategies, C and D, which are very similar, with the exception of the use of the Free Hit in Gameweek 31 vs 35.

This highlights that there is no significant difference between Free Hitting in Gameweek 31 or 35 if the popular strategy was used when activating the other chips.

While Gameweek 35 Free Hit managers enjoyed a strong return, they seem to have lost some ground around it – particularly in Gameweek 36 when they got their default squad back; this put them on equal footing with the Gameweek 31 Free Hitters.

It is worth noting that most of the best strategies involved using the Bench Boost in 34 and Triple Captains in 37 or 38.

We should also acknowledge that the popular strategies didn’t fail, “Strategy D” was 12.5 points short of the top “Strategy A”. Of course, these 12.5 points could have a significant impact on rank, but still “Strategy D” was better than so many strategies not listed in the table and considered here.

Meanwhile, popular strategy G (which is the same as D but with delaying the Wildcard one more week to Gameweek 33) works out as 25 points lower than the optimum strategy.

Waiting this extra week with the mediocre Gameweek 31 players in the team and missing on so many price rises (and falls) really damaged this approach.

Personally, depending on how the fixtures fall, I will consider using my Triple Captain chip outside of the Double Gameweeks, maybe over the final weekend to mimic “Strategy B”.

Myself and so many managers have been burnt by the failings of the Triple Captain in Double Gameweeks over the last three seasons (remember Andy Carroll?). While Gameweek 38, with its plethora of goals, could be far more effective, particularly if there are for teams and players with motivation on the final day.

With less doubles and blanks expected next season as it’ll be a week longer I’m certainly thinking of saving FH or TC for GW38. Depends on a lot of things but not ruling it out.

Not saying he isn’t credible but hasn’t he been completely wrong before?

I can’t ever recall there not being a DGW in 34/37 for instance.

Blanks will always appear somewhere due to the ridiculous scheduling by the relevant authorities

I guess what he means to say is there will be less teams blanking which means less teams in doubles. Anyways too early too be thinking about that. My thinking is if it’s easier to navigate the double/blanks next season I might save one of FH/TC for GW38.

Yeah I don't like them either. Football is so successful as a game because it is so simple, and I feel a game based on football should reflect that; beautiful in its simplicity.

The vanilla FPL game was a perfect homage but these needless additions have been to its detriment, IMO.

Really impressive article, thanks Ragabolly, brilliant work!

But, there is addition needed. TC22 strategies are totally missing and quite many did that. Should these strategies be also added to the list? What was their popularity and even if there wasn't data enough statistically, could you tell what happened with these strategies?

I tried the water spray based on IR movements, epic fail.

I guess for the average joe...will they really fork out on trapping and relocating foxes...i doubt when you can buy rat poison 1kg for just over a tenner. Also you can't buy Strychnine very easily either.

I guess the flip side, is if you remove foxes then the smaller rodents may increase...just which is the lesser evil

This is it. It's illegal to use poison. You can shoot them but you have to have a gun licence. It's also illegal to use a fire arm in a urban area. I'd rather have foxes than rodents.

I had a whole family of squirrels in my back garden and in my attic. I ended up putting the squirrel metal cage and caught most of them. Then relocated to the parks and let loose.

Have to say I used to think squirrels were nice, the parent jumped at my leg and bounded away...never expected a parent squirrel to be actually big and strong!

I don't think I will bother with the foxes, boxing them up, transporting etc...

The real.concern for me is weighing up small rodent Vs fox...

If it wasn't for the damn baby foxes I am sure they wouldn't be damaging my fences, digging my grass up and holes etc

Over the bank holiday weekend I did two coats of paint for all the fences, decking and just ordered rattan furniture.

  13. Was Triple Captain Chip really a flop?

Not sure you can draw conclusions on triple captain use just because they failed this season. Would have to analyse triple captains from multiple seasons to determine their best use.

One factor in your categories that you do not account for is player skill. For example it could be possible that those who used their free hit chip in GW 22 were just not very good managers (as a group) which could account for their subsequent under performance.
Also being much earlier in the season many may have lost interest in the game during the following weeks, while those using the chips in the last few weeks were clearly still motivated

you also need to offset the points gained by the FH22 players over the weeks surrounding that period(say 20-24) vs those not using a chip at that time.

surely TC in a DGW is still the most logical choice on the proviso the player is in form and the fixtures are good. if you get one decent return then you can call that a success and you basically double your chance of that happening.

by that reasoning is still maintain Jesus was a good shout for the DGW. striker on form started 2 matches against plum opponents. it was just tough luck it didn’t work out

Yes, even though we consider this seasons DGW triple captains a failure Kane still made 16 points in GW37 and Lukaku made 24 points in DGW 34
They were the Two most popular during those weeks. Not really a failure at all. The downside would be worse on a single week, and the upside less too

through circumstance I had kane gw34 for 30pts which I was initially a bit disappointed with. in hindsight I think we always believe the chip is going to give us 60+ points but we should be grateful if the player gets double digits

Looking back at captain analysis I performed on the blog (no longer public) the best captains (Those that win the poll by a wide margin) average around Six points. (Twelve as capt)

This being the case If the capt in a double has Two great fixtures then 24 points TC is the average outcome.

However, often as this season, One of the fixtures is likely to be sub optimal, One match away from home or a tricky opponent. The chosen player is also likely to be playing his Third game in a short space of time so may see less minutes or be tired.

I played mine in 22. Maybe I'm just not a good manager 🙂 it hurt at the time and I could tell then that my season would be average at best, though it was the ending that killed me. Going into DGW 37 I was 1 point of top 10k, I finished 37k!

I think he is missing my strategy-free hit gw 34(good side either side),wildcard gw 36, bench boost gw 37. I'd already used my triple captain earlier in the season on the wasted Kane dgw.

I think this all misses the point imo-the choice of captain is the principal of who does best on average in this game...

Tremendous work, Ragabolly. It's impossible to be conclusive, but this is about as fair and rigorous an attempt as I've seen.

I should mention that I utilized none of the strategies laid out, and scored 660 (-24) in the final ten game weeks. That's not being smug - I only went up about 6K - but it simply highlights that there were a number of ways to skin the proverbial cat this season, some utilized more often than others.

    Nice job.

    All 8 of the strategies listed in Ragabolly's survey involved TC 37 or 38, BB 34 or 38, FH 31 or 35 and WC 32, 33, 34, 35 or 36.
But although these were the most popular, some top players had more success with other popular strategies:

Yusuf Sheikh (FPL Champion) played WC 25, FH 31, BB 37 and TC GW38, scoring 657 in the last 10 GWs.
Shirin Nizar (January to May League winner) played FH 31, TC 34, WC 35 and BB 37, scoring 699 in the last 10 GWs.
Ian Baldwin (winner of both The home stretch and Doubles Blanks & Chips) played TC 22, WC 32, FH 34 and BB 37, scoring 709 points in the last 10 GWs.

This suggests that BB 37 may have been as good as if not better than the more popular BB34 when used to the best advantage, and also that FH 34 was another viable option.
So we shouldn't complain that the chips force us all to use them in the same way - there were some good alternatives!

(Of course Yusuf's, Shirin's and Ian's successes did not only depend on chip strategy. They also had to select the right players at the right times, take the odd well-judged hit or differential but not too many and have a certain amount of luck).

Also, Anders Lium (Top 10k Any Season winner) played TC22, FH34, WC36 and BB37, scoring 694 in the last 10 game-weeks.

So all of these 4 winners played their BB in 37 and their FH in either 31 or 34.

You could argue that the "Hall of Fame" is incorrectly named. When we think of a HoF in sport or music, like the Boxing Hall of Fame or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it is for people who have retired from their field, and it is designed to recognise their past achievements and contributions.

The FFS HoF is not quite a "Hall of Form" either (I would argue that's the FPL leaderboard), the FFS HoF is designed to show who are the most consistently successful managers currently playing the game.

Chris told me when we met at the FFS charity match, that he created it because he wanted to know what moves the best managers were making, so that he could learn from them. Essentially this is why I like to follow the HoF Top 5 because I want to learn from the best managers currently playing the game.

So it's not really a HoF in the Boxing or Rock and Roll sense because these FPL managers haven't retired, but it does identify some of the best managers playing the game now. IMO it should be weighted to favour recent seasons because if I want to learn from the best, I want to learn from the best active managers now.

The FFS HoF does a great job of identifying some of the best managers currently playing the game. There are plenty of other ways to achieve the same thing, perhaps some FPL managers rank higher using a different method, but so what really? - if you prefer another method, fine, but there's nothing wrong with the FFS HoF. Does a great job, although perhaps not exactly what it says on the tin.

It's no different to the HoF who rate more recent years highly than older years, the creator was on Twitter a while back explaining the process.

Perhaps (and that's a matter of opinion) but there can be no dispute that this tool gauges it any differently to the HoF, he's tweaked his system to gauge it the same way.

No I wasn't saying that it was.

They are both represent form rather than what a hall of fame should represent.

Exactly. A table with each season weighted equally would differentiate it from the hall of form, which has been steadily modified to favour most recent results.

Maybe we can get Chris to create an unweighted and weighted version. Might be an interesting twist.

I do think we have to have some weighting due to the significant change in manager numbers over the seasons.

Having said that, I reckon the HoF needs a tweak as Paul's high entry is perhaps a little extreme so I'll chat to Chris about it.

I would like to see both a Hall of Fame and a Hall of Form.

Our current Hall of Fame should be renamed (perhaps Hall of Form or Table of Recent Form).

But the new Hall of Fame should be different. It should be a smaller list of all those who have won or come close to winning FPL, plus those whose consistency has at some point earned them top position in our Hall of Form.

… You could perhaps also add the winners of the FFS Main and Members Leagues and of the FFS Cups.

Its not real anyway. Doesn't take into account real life situations like players taking a huge risk to try and win their Mini leagues which could cost them Or for example if a player is forced to quit the game for real life reasons at the start of the season. He will be punished by forever having that bad rank on his record. Doesn't make him any worse of a player It truly is a worthless measurement of who is best and people making money off it is a bit of a scam too. It's impossible to find out who is best. There are very good players, good players and poor players who probably don't even care anyway. No one man above the crew. Lot of knowledgeable guys on here it's almost unfair to rate them. Sorry it's a bit of a sham but a bit of fun for a lot but shouldn't be taken serious.

You want the top 10 players in the world at moment. Nearest you will get is checking the top 10 in the overall league. On paper anyway they are the 'best'

It's not all managers by any means, it only includes managers who have finished in the top 50k this season.

Sure, but you can come up with weightings that the majority think are fair I guess. I think that should be the aim.

I personally believe that most recent seasons should be weighted more strongly due to player numbers and active players increasing. Seems to be reasonable that a top 1k finish this or last season was more difficult to achieve than five seasons ago.

I also think the jump from 5k to 500, 3k to 300 or 1k to 100 is quite significant and there should be weightings applied there. I don't really know how Chris and the HoF deals with that - maybe he doesn't. I need a refresher.

All rankings like this will be subjective - its inevitable.

For some having a bad season should count for less, for others an exceptional high finish is worth more.

Maybe worth having a variety out there to let each manager decide.

In our Hall of Fame my 80K finish really punished me last season - seeing me dip from 30 to around 350, which in my subjective way 😉 I did think was harsh when the previous finishes were
      4.5K
      1.5K
      Top 1,000
      3.9K
      5K

But on the flip side I've never had a top 100 or top 10 finish which I think does need to count for more. In the year I got a top 1,000 finish I would have had to step up to another level to get to top 100 - I do think that other level needs added weighting.

Oddly though in both this new rating and our Hall of Fame I'm roughly the same - around top 100, which I think is about right - so it looks like a manager like me with overall good but not eye popping season finishes is treated the same with or without that super weighting for super high scores.

Your history is excellent and should never, ever have sent you so far down because of one 80K finish.

It's worth remembering that with 6 million players it's highly, highly likely some 100 players or more will just be good _and_ very lucky, and therefore incredibly hard to beat. You don't get a top10 finish by just being good so I don't think I agree it should be extra weighted towards the super high places.

Such a ranking should take the amount of points (over i.e the past 5 seasons) into account, not the rank. The distribution of points has a very fat tail, so i.e 10 points more/less matters a lot more in terms of rank to lower ranked players. Then a bad season wouldnt be as severly punished if you have a couple of excellent seasons, like Mark.

Whether it should be weighted or not is subjective, i guess it kind of makes sense as only taking past 5 seasons into account is a random cutoff anyway.

I too agree that the FFS HoF is weighted too much towards the most recent seasons. Paul Gee going straight in at #7 with a good but not spectacular previous history is a good example.

I can agree that some weighting is fine due to the increasing number of opponents, but it's worth keeping in mind that there were other obstacles if we go ten years back. Back then there were still one million players, and you had no stats or transfer strategy guides or algorithm XIs to help you out. It took different skills than now, but it was certainly not as much easier as the hall of fame makes it look.

That said, I'm still a fan of the Hall of Fame, it just needs the weightings tweaked, and I'd like to see FFS adding more tools like that to track the community. Perhaps included in the poster profiles or something.

    TC - GW22: 87
    WC - GW25
    FH - GW31: 111
    BB - GW37: 102

My path was different to most but I couldn't have played my chips much better imo, as I was 1.7m in GW19 and finished a more respectable 148k. If I had went the more popular route would I have finished with a higher OR, I doubt it.
