The ScoutCast – Episode 262 – Retrospective

The latest ScoutCast brings the curtain down on another Fantasy season as we take the opportunity to navel-gaze and conduct a full retrospective.

Recent new signing David makes his debut, while Granville is a late arrival to join myself, Jonty, Andy and Az to form a six-strong crew.

We start by appraising Gameweek 38 to report back on a dramatic final day at the top of the Fantasy Premier League. We then take the lead from your final round of community questions.

Our best and worst decisions, our most disappointing and inspiring signings and early targets for next season are all revealed. We even consider the lessons learned to offer advice on cracking the top ranks – for what it’s worth.

Then, after another season of ScoutCasts, we pick out our personal on-air highlights.

We thank you in advance for sticking through this, our longest ever episode, and for listening over the last nine months.

Next season we edge towards 300 and finally reach the Last of the Summer Wine target. Then we all roll down a hill in a bathtub and off into the sunset. See you soon.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The difference in how long it takes a page on here to expire is crazy compared to when the season is on. Like literally 1 minute v 1 hour. Makes sense I guess but still

Might start my own hall of foam
To qualify you need a top 100, 8 or more top 13k, and you worst rank must be better than 60k

Unfortunately Nick with only 5 top 13k and 3 worse than 60k isn't elite enough.

Nothing wrong with the current HoF way of measuring players.

Around 15 years ago Arsenal were Champions, one of the top two teams in England and Invincible while Man City were a nothing club, yoyoing through the divisions, roll the clock forward and Man City are now the best team in England while Arsenal are declining and going nowhere.

Times change and no one would call Arsenal a better team than Man City now, anyone who does will just be clinging to past glories.

It's not important at the end of the day, if you're happy with how you've performed it won't matter where you've ranked.

Yes, it's very silly, if you're happy with how you've performed, you won't need the HoF to validate you, if you're not than lashing out won't help you find inner peace.

I have always thought though another way to do it that ignores form would be simply taking an average of all your ranks. Obviously can only really compare to people that have played the same amount of seasons though

2000 points might get you a 100K rank.
Another player might total 100K in 8 seasons but have less total points etc.

Owning the bad rank is just as important as being happy with a good one.

Look at Jonty as an example, had a shocker last year, didn't cry about it or blame the game for his failure, he analysed himself and came back fighting, that rank last year drove him on to have an amazing season, to me that is elite mentality not someone whinging about it.

That's why average rank is a bit meh.

                    Fwiw

Mark 22758 pts, average rank 29802
TM 22680 pts, average rank 11938

Last 10 seasons, Mark has 2 more season, both inside 3k.

I'm not sure the average rank works tbh, the game has changed massively.

There's now 6m players with a ton of info for them and the chips to change the dynamic of the game, those are all factors to deal with, if you get a good rank now with so much competition, you know you can probably enjoy it knowing the field is far more competative with the numbers who play and the various strategies to deal with, I'd say you've earned it a lot more.

That's not to discredit ranks from the past as it's still an achievement but back then it was a very niche game where truly dedicated players would prosper and strategies were a lot more simple.

Agree with a couple of the guys above that such HOF rankings should take points, not rank into account. The problem is that the distribution of points is far from uniform and has a large tail.

Rank is a result of points and not the other way around. Also, the number of points is independent of the number of managers while rank is not.

HOF is a nonsical bit of fun for people who care about it. It shouldn't be used for people to be claiming they are elite because it doesn't take into account many factors that an algorithm simple can't account for.

They should erase really bad years.
Look at Evs for example, fantastic player who takes a few risks and is not afraid to go against template.
His HOF career is now over after One really bad season where the wheels fell off and he couldnt be bothered to make an effort.

He is without question a better player than many above him on the list.

It's a fair point, but at the same time some people have a bad season simply because they were crap that season. There is no algorithm out there that can deduce what was going on in someone's life.

In my first 2 seasons I wasn't really playing, I just sort of logged on and didn't do much and if I was to be bothered signing up for a FFS league it would ruin my rank, but the algorithm doesn't know I wasn't playing 'properly', for all it knows I was just shoite. How do you code for that?

It would be like saying if someone has a really brilliant season then that should be discounted because there was obviously something dodgy going on because it's not like their other seasons.

Outliers is certainly a problem with these rankings. I guess you can't just erase really bad years by default, but only taking the 3 best out the 5 last years for instance is a perfectly valid way to reduce variance and dealing with the problem of outliers.

Agree. I said this in an earlier post on here. It can't be taken serious until they do. I was locked out of my account that year they had issues with the system so my auto pick team finished around 3 milllion. Although for this one season I had to make another account , this 3 mil Will be forever on my record. I don't care myself but I guess for others who are intrested in hall of fame then that will unfairly effect them forever

Hate that one 😀 I mean really how can you call it an all time list when there is a heavy bias to recent seasons.

Does babe Ruth fall in the baseball hall of fame every season? Of course not. Any All time list has to have no weighting bias towards recent seasons or it is just a measure of form

Just don't rate Lanzini, and I won't rate Sanchez until he has shown that he can perform in a Mourinho side consistently.
I like Eriksen, but think Zaha might be overpriced next season

Also, I think you're missing an outfield player

Lanzini is a class act but Arnie looks a better option for sure. As I say I threw him in tongue-in-cheek! In saying that if they get Maunuel Pellegrini WHU could come on leaps and bounds!

It's just the core that I'm focusing on haha so I've only listed 11 of 15! 😉

Not sure why it isn't a hot topic (it looks like even Mark's laundry list is getting hulked these days) ........ but would you pay £14m for Salah like Official FPL tweeted yesterday?

For me, only if he remains a midfielder (which he is and always will be - a right-sided attacking midfielder).

If he gets reclassified as a forward he loses his extra points for a goal and a clean sheet and unlike Firmino he won't have bonus to fall back on (because Official FPL in all their ingenuity have created a system that hates and penalises the greatest player FPL has ever seen).

He usually fires around 6 goal attempts per game, many off target. He also missed more big chances than any other player last season (23 I think). Even as a forward, he won't be a friend of the BPS.

I'd consider him obvs, but I don't think 14m would be a fair or sensible valuation. If he repeats or betters his achievements from this season then fair enough. 12.5m striker or 13.0m middy for me.

Sanchez was a different case though.

I think I can't start the season without him.
His consistency has been amazing and if he and Liverpool play the same way (I don't see why they wouldn't since it was successful) he may be essential from the beginning, so I'll pay as much as he costs.

at 14mil i’ll probably steer clear for the start of the season. if he looks worthy of the tag after a few games it’ll be worth the hit but having a 10-11mil mid +3mil elsewhere could easily outperform

I normally expect an outfield player to get 20 points per million, which would make him worth £15m if he repeated this season's performance. I wouldn't pay that but I'd be ok with paying £13m as long as he's still a midfielder.

One of the big 4 - Brazil, Spain, Germany, France. If those 4 played each other 10 times each, I’d say it would still be pretty even so hard to call who will win. It’ll come down to who does best on the day in the semis & then the final.

Their squads are sick, the amount of world class talent in every position is just unbelievable. Then you see englands team lol, it’s pathetic.

Even Argentina have a lot of weaknesses... starting Rojo & Romero is going to get them into trouble somewhere along the line.

Don't understand the point of it.

The essence of FPL is pitting your wits against the world, using the information in front of you as best as possible and your good old gut instinct. Plus bants on forums like this.

That just boils it down to the click of a button. All the agonising, over-analysis and conjecture... done away in the click of a button.

      Where was it again?!

You still end up cheering on players whether you pick them or a computer does. You could say what is the point in supporting a football team, as you don't play for that team or pick the team.

Looking at the different World Cup games currently available it appears that most of them are the same thing under a different name, certainly Soccerway, Mail and Goal all look the same and have the same prices and set up/ rules, but as far as I can see they're not connected. Is there a particular one of these that the FFS community are planning to get behind and set up a league in or will that only be for the official game if and when it arrives?

      Hey DZ.

I was just wondering if anyone knew of a site or anything that can view any mini-league data for the season. For example graphs of the different teams' ML rank, number of weeks in 1st position etc. etc.

      Much appreciated 🙂

      Cheers

        Not sure.
You may be able to get that from here:

            Thanks, G-Whizz.

Not exactly what I am looking for actually, but appreciate the response.

I'm looking for a site/feature that can visualize the season within a ML. Anewpla is doing a GREAT job in regards to season stats etc. for a single team. But I'm looking for a site that graphs/maps out a ML season.

            Cheers again

A lot of people are talking about not finding a decent fantasy league website.

It might sound a silly question but could the FPL website not do a website overhaul and run the WC one? How much work/cost would this be? Surely they can just re-code the Prem team names to National team names and add/remove a couple of players?

Please excuse my ignorance to this kind of work, not my industry at all!

I obviously don't speak on behalf of FPL but I'd suggest most of the time between now and next season goes into planning for next season and the new FPL game may well open whilst the World Cup is finishing, which would make this very difficult for them.

Again, I was a casual before this season, often forgetting about my team half way through the season, so I don't know; are there big changes made over the off-season? Other than chips game looks basically the same for me every year?

Premier League doesn’t run the World Cup.

Is the FPL officially affiliated with the PremierLeague? What I'm saying is it's probably the biggest football fantasy league website out there and none of the world cup ones touch FPL.

Just figured they have the perfect template could they not just throw a blanket over it and cover he world cup.

Ahh OK OK, I see, I did not realise. I thought they may have been linked but didn't know it was actually run by them.

What're everyone's tips for breakout star of this World Cup a la Ozil/ Muller of 2010 or James Rodriguez of 2014?

Timo Werner has to be my shout after his Confederations Cup and recent seasons for RBL.

Not sure it would count as a breakout but someone maybe like Asensio or Mbappe could really show they're gonna be a top player.

          Lower teams: Golovin, Jahanbaksh.

          Bigger teams: Goretzka, Asensio, TAA.

As it's the season for swinging your rank about, did you know FFS vet El Nino Rules is one of only twelve people with two 2-digit ranks to his name?

this site -post season- is really turning into a cautionary tale about what happens if you don't find a real hobby other than FPL.

That said, is there a world cup fantasy anywhere?

First transfer of my season was Danilo to Kyle Walker who then got sent off.
I bought Mané the week before he assaulted Ederson.
When I finally got Agüero in his taxi driver almost killed him.
I bought Phil Jones after all his cleanies and he got injured.
I went for West Ham double up of Lanzini and Arnautovic the week they both got injured.
When Kane went 2 13 13 2 13 (or similar) I only captained his blanks
On the final day I took a -4 to swap Ddg for Ederson who then managed to get booked whilst not on the pitch

TLDR- no algorithm could be this shite at Fpl so where do I download the app???
