The Community Round-up

With only two weeks to go before the kick-off of a certain summer tournament, the Fantasy Football Scout Community have been focused on the build-up and potential fall-out from the World Cup on our domestic campaigns.

Our Hot Topics consider the extent of the fatigue factor on day one of the Premier League season, while we also consider those players likely to contribute to the Gameweek 1 template.

Elsewhere, World Cup Fantasy occupies our thoughts, as discussions touch on the start date and mechanics of the forthcoming official game from McDonalds.

Finally, news of a brand new community tournament – based on the World Cup friendlies starting tonight – ends our round-up.

The Community Articles

RedLightning ‘s analysis of the newly promoted teams to the Premier League from 2010-2018 has already found a place on our required reading list for the summer.

His findings suggest that we should tread carefully when considering Championship strikers, while clean sheets have also proved hard to come by in previous years. Thanks to increased save points, it is the goalkeepers that should occupy our thoughts based on his handy retrospective.

Elsewhere, Stoichkov#8 has taken the initiative and filled the gap for us Fantasy managers while we wait for the World Cup opener. He has set up a new Fantasy tournament running from tonight through to June 12, focusing on the forthcoming friendlies, with eight Gameweeks spanning the next 12 days. Managers must post on the Community Article each day with their selections, and he will do the rest.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports, or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Planning for the new season is already in swing as Triggerlips raised the prospect of introducing more FPL position categories as an improvement to the game. He suggests attacking and defensive midfield positions, as well as splitting the defence.

Away from potential rule changes, we switched attention to “FPL bang for buck” with our Hot Topic which looked to predict the best value players to emerge next season.

Meanwhile, FFFrøg considered how influential beaten Champions League finalists Liverpool will be in our Fantasy seasons, predicting them to make a crucial contribution to the Gameweek 1 template.

World Cup fatigue could be a factor that influences the teamsheets for that opening weekend, and we asked how likely this was to enter into our thinking when devising our initial squads.

Pep Guardiola typically requires little reason to frustrate us with his line-up, and with speculation on their future signings gathering pace, we also asked how we will approach Manchester City’s assets should the rotation risk escalate next season.

Switching back to the imminent World Cup Fantasy games, FFFrøg returned to provide some much-needed clarity on the launch of the McDonalds Fifa format.

Meanwhile, BITM2007 focused on the chips in that game, to present a strong case for activating them over the knockout stages.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

The Community Tournaments

The World Cup Friendlies Fantasy Tournament started today, and the standings will be updated in next weeks Community Round-up. You can join the tournament in the relevant Community Article right here.

Meanwhile, organiser Stoichkov#8 clarified a few points for the tournament in this Hot Topic.

If you are considering setting up a community tournament for the World Cup and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

I think they could go a step further with it (haven't in McD's for obvious reasons) and introduce a full 'Autopilot' chip that retrospectively benches your worst performing players as well as auto-picking your best captain option. Would be a fun chip to play in a normal week when you have multiple captain options and decent GK options for a start 🙂

Would still be another one best used in a DGWs though. I think they shouod ban the use of any chips in DGWs. They are forcing us all down a narrow path and it is not much fun

Actually I agree. I think there should be one WC in the first half of the season and then one WC to use in Jan or the first GW after the close of the Jan window and that's it. No chips at all. Would make the 2nd half of the season more strategic and stop everyones teams all looking the same by DGW time.

I understand why you'd say that, but massive scores in DGW's is half the fun. See how distraught everyone was when we weren't closing in on 200 pointers this season. 2016/17's DGW37 was dreamy. I'd prefer us to have some chips that must be used in the 1st half, like the WC.

I get you for sure Legomane but I would like to see something done to break up the template team during the run in. It makes it very hard to come from behind. I did my best this season to get from about 2.3 mil after 11 game weeks having C Kane all the time to get to 600K but even with good GW's at the end I hit a ceiling because everyone had the same team.

Problem is DGWs can come out of the blue though. You can have a very specific chip plan then all of a sudden an unexpected DGW means you can't use your chip.

Having to save everything until the last few weeks of the season is not really fun imo. The wildcard is now nothing more than a chip enabler, putting the pieces in place for the following dgw bench boost.
I want to be able to use my wildcard for long term planning when it is most needed and currently that is very difficult to do

Yeah, I agree though I’m hoping next seasons fuxtures give us a curveball to mix it up. I find timing the first Wildcard quite stressful as it can be a test whereas the second is always a partner for another chip and therefore an easy decision.

I complete agree here with Triggerlips and Mark. If one chip simply sets up the other then everyone is doing it for the most part and this encourages group think. There must be something FPL can do to shake things up without it being something that ends up pulling all our teams to close to the same players.

People should stop whining about the chips, they are not ideal and make the game boring when everyone is scared into using them at the same time as everyone else but it is what it is.

We get 3 chips a season, to be blunt, that's 3 weeks out of 38, if you end up with a bad rank it's more than likely not going to be because of 3 chipped weeks, equally relying on 3 weeks to make or break a season is never good use of them anyway or good play.

We've had 3 years of them to see what they can do for you and what they can't, I've never had a good TC, seen loads who use it in a single and smash it, I smashed my FHC in a single, seen loads who flopped the week after a double giving back any gains.

3 years of experience now means people can decide if saving them for a double is worth it or not, it's a big enough sample size to form an opinion.

I myself will be bench boosting in GW1/2 next year while I can build a squad for it then fix up my structure and forget about having too much money on the bench, I've decided that based on 3 years of the BB in a double not being that amazing, everyone is allowed to follow their own path and break away from the template use and let's be honest, the template use of the chips at the end of last season didn't give a lot of people the finish they really wanted.

On the flip side of that, FPL have also had Three years to assess the chips, and now would be a good time to make adjustments that would benefit the game, as it has become very clear they have created a herding mentality and a narrowing of options

Yes, I agree, if they want to they could tweak them to make the game a little bit more exciting but they seem a little bit lazy (to me) to do such a thing.

They were invented to keep the less engaged, engaged, if it's doing that they'll have no reason to change, I guess it's now down to us to be brave and to try and outsmart them.

Next year is going to be very interesting, have seen a lot of engaged managers have flat chip weeks this year, expecting a few brave moves with them next year from quite a few as in breaking away from a template use of them and doing your own thing.

I agree. I’m sure they were designed to provide options, but I feel they have just dictated behaviour. The Free Hit next year (if it stays) will have even narrower options as the FA Cup QFs wont cause a blank GW - just the semis.

‪Should chips be banned in Double Gameweeks? When I play my wikdcard I want it to be for long term planning not as an enabler for packing the benches ready for the dgw bench boost. Banning chips in doubles would make decisions more personal and not force us down the same route‬

It would encourage diversity of strategy and stop managers being funneled into getting pretty much the same players in these crunch times of the season.

I would like to see chips banned altogether but this would be a happy compromise for me.

If the bench boost could not be played in a double it would really add to thoughtfulness of the game. Every week you would look at your bench and wonder if this would be a good time to activate it. Currently it does not even enter into the equation until a double pops up.
Same with the second wildcard, would be played when you needed it, as it used to be. Setting the team up for the remainder of the season.

I can see no downside to banning chips in doubles, apart from a few managers bleating that it takes away their adbpvantage over casuals

          I couldn't agree more.

The way it is structured at the moment takes the fun out of the game especially towards the end of the season because we are all doing pretty much the same thing.

The best buzz you will get out of fpl is when you do something different from the masses and it comes off.Forcing managers to only use the chips on SGWs will encourage people to have more fun with the game and that is a good thing.

Sensible plan to avoid the players who progress to the latter stages of the WC. Always a risk of them being rested in GW1 for missing part of pre-season.

I’ll go for a 3 gameweek team in prep for early WC, mostly filled with players who have had a good rest over the summer.

      Done nothing noteworthy.
Griez and Dembele have looked more clinical in their technique.
No idea which two will play out of Giroud, Dembele & Mbappe. Likely rotation.

I'm probably going to avoid France all together in the groups because of the defensive quality of Peru and Denmark and my sneaking suspicion that Australia might do better than they look on the surface, but interesting to know what the options are if Dembele were to be classified as a mid.

He’s played ok. Assisted the first goal, I think. Italian defence did give him a lot of space, though.

Seems raw to me, but still young. Fluffed a shot earlier on. He's only scored 3 in 13 for France.

I think Mbappe was the focal point for the beginning of the first half, Griezmann and Dembele seemed to be supporting him. For instance when they got the penalty Griezmann had stopped before the penalty area as if expecting Mbappe to run in...which he didn't so Hernandez had no-one to pass to. After that they changed formation which helped Dembele.

Yeah, his decision making is lacking. Lacks that experience. I think Giroud will start personally.
