The Community Round-up

Our World Cup planning picked up pace yesterday after FIFA launched their official Fantasy game for this summer’s tournament.

The discussion on site, as well as Hot Topics and Members tables, mainly focussed on Russia 2018 as Fantasy managers start to firm up their plans ahead of next Thursday’s big kick-off.

There was also chat on the Premier League’s decision to announce a winter break from 2019/20 earlier today, while the World Cup Friendlies Community Tournament approaches it’s mid-point.

The Hottest Topics

After Jose Mourinho made his first move in the transfer market, we pondered Fred’s potential impact on Manchester United, also canvassing thoughts on your club’s transfer dealings so far.

Stoichkov#8 helped us look forward to the World Cup as round two of the Community Tournament for World Cup friendlies kicked off last weekend.

McNulty also gave us a helping hand in our quest for World Cup Fantasy points, posting the odds for teams remaining unbeaten in the group stage.

And G-Whizz was another to aid our defensive strategy with a look at World Cup 2018 clean sheet odds,Tommytour was keen to discuss transfer plans for the FIFA game.

FFFrøg mulled over the ever-crucial captaincy strategy for the FIFA game, assessing how best to spread captaincy options to maximize chances of a big haul.

Earlier today, KunTheMan also sparked a very handy assessment of the best bargain options available and Hodor offered a new perspective on squad selection, suggesting that strength on the bench can be overlooked.

Finally, our editor, David, also updated us with the news that the Premier League will introduce a winter break in 2019/20 as other, including Mark, gave their view on the potential domestic impact.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

Members Tables

Members Tables this week featured one of our own, with J0E looking at World Cup Goalscorers from the World Cup qualification data, as well as World Cup Talismen, players who are the most involved in their team’s attack.

Elsewhere, FPLVirgin looked at World Cup teams’ chances of getting clean sheets.

Our Members Tables can be found in the Members Only area in the Stats Tables section.

The Community Tournaments

Stoichkov#8’s World Cup Friendlies Community Tournament hit the halfway point on Thursday with the conclusion of Gameweek 4, with Gameweek 5 not yet complete at the time of writing.

At the halfway point, Rony1993 has pulled seven points ahead of a chasing pack, which includes five managers who are split by only four points.

There’s work to be done for those below sixth, but with it so close at the top the use of differentials could break the table up significantly.

FFFrøg has started a Community Tournament for the World Cup Fantasy game, and is taking applications now.

Community members will join a nation and play as a team against others. The game will follow the group stages and then the knockout format of the real tournament, with 96 spots initially available.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Anybody else noticed that the Fantasy WC site takes up an enormous amount of resources?

Was wondering why the fan on my laptop was going crazy, then checked the Task manager on Chrome and noticed that the Fantasy WC tab takes up 99% of CPU resources!!

Seriously, what kind of terrible programming is that?

I reckon the first game is the starting 11

Although id be weary of stones. One of the talk sport ex pro pundits said the fact he started both friendlies suggests the manager may not be sure he starts.

Rashford doesn't deserve a spot. Most over hyped player ever and done nothing for his club so doubt he gets the nod over sterling.

I reckon Cahill could start myself.

Bench is pretty weak, which is more of a problem with active subbing.

I'd prefer Isco over Coutinho even if they were the same price, and maybe Jesus/Werner ahead of Griezmann, especially since you already have Mbappe

Yes Carrasco plays at wing back, but he also gets a lot of attacking returns and is playing Panama

Im hoping Varela does play - if he does then there's a good clean sheet chance and if he doesn't I can just sub him out (or if he's confirmed out I'll get someone else)

What's the best approach for the Fifa/McD game ?

    A) Strong starting 11 with a dirt cheap bench.

    B) More balanced squad with players on the bench who are likely to contribute.

I'm seeing a lot of strong starting 11's for Fifa/McD with dirt cheap benches. Given that players who blank can be subbed out for those yet to play, wouldn't it make more sense to sacrifice a big name or two for a decent bench ?

The thing is, there are mid range players that are looking good especially the ones in midfield and some of the big teams have great first 2 fixtures so getting players from them seems essential as well.

I'm thinking of going without a really big hitter to get a couple of 5m/5.5m defenders on the bench. There appears to me more value at the back than up front.

Great value but that comes with a big hole in the team and you're likely to have an all 4.5 bench and even starters in some cases

      Not at this stage.

We get multiple attempts at a captain each round, so that counters the captaincy bonus that these guys might give, and without that they're not worth the extra

If they preform like they do for their clubs then yes, but they take up a large chunk of an already tight budget so i'm avoiding. The problems with this is that they are going to be highly owned (and obviously if you've got them, you will captain them), so if they score big in a game those without are going to be behind the 8 ball !

Mendy has been injured all season. Therefore, there's a chance he looks off and gets rotated (Plenty of options at LB) On the other hand, Sidibe's right back cannot be touched and he's coming off a great season with 2 goals and 7 assists in the league.

If I pick player X to my starting eleven and lets say he scores 4 points, the next day I decide to put player Y in his place hoping for bigger haul. Player Y fails and scores only 2 points, can I then revert back to putting player X in before next round starts ?

Think I will go in for 15 players with potential to score to star with, see who is in form and who is not and then re-evaluate for next rounds maybe reducing number of playing players for a sake of big hitters.

    Thoughts on this one please!

    Muslera, Gallese

    Kimmich, Meunier, Danilo, Tagliafico, Varela

    Lukaku, Jesus, Werner

Doubling up on Germany attack maybe not the best plan with their first two games. Tagliafico is just not going to keep any clean sheets because Iceland score a lot and Croatia are a very decent side. Quite like it apart from that - I don't think Kimmich is worth 6.5m but I understand I'm in a minority there.

I have Muller and Werner because I think they're both great individual options - will think about alternatives.

    The case for Timo Werner

    Performance in games he's started

Confederations Cup 2017 (started vs Cameroon, Mexico, Chile)
    3 starts, 3 goals, 2 assists - Golden Boot

Qualifiers since then (started vs Czechia, Norway)
    2 starts, 3 goals, 0 assists

Friendlies since then (started vs England, France, Spain, Saudi Arabia)
    4 starts, 2 goals, 1 assist

    That's 9 starts, 8 goals, 3 assists. Wow.

    The case against Timo Werner.

His first two games are vs Mexico and Sweden. Mexico have only conceded once in their last 6 games, a penalty vs Croatia. Sweden's defence has however been weak since their brilliant qualifying campaign.

Decision - I think he's coming into my team. That record for Germany, in some tough games, is outstanding and he appears to be nailed on for them. Muller hasn't performed at that level since the last WC for Germany, and it remains to be seen if he'll live up to a 9.5m price tag.

three at the back with rose and trippier/taa suits us. None of our defenders are that strong defensively so having five of them + dier in the team helps cover for the likelihood of us making mistakes in defence. give southgate credit for seeing the pace deficiency and putting walker in the back three.

A question that has been already answered a million times I imagine... with substitutions I think am right in saying you can't sub in a player on the same day as another? It has to be the day after in the same round?

I.e. a player plays in the first game of the day, I won't be able to sub in a player from the same day

The midfield area is the toughest in my opinion. Where do people see the value?

I like the look of Layun. And reckon Trezeguet is worth a punt.

Just read the fifa subs rules.

Surely the best tactic is to bench your players who play last in the round, even if they are the likes of lewandoski or james, just in case any of your earl playing players score big (even if they are cheap players). Then just transfer the later players in for those who haven't done anything.
Why would you not do this?

      Yes that is the plan.

    What do you think?

    Muslera
    Varela --- Stones --- Meunier
    Eriksen --- Ziyach --- J. Rodriguez --- Coutinho --- J. Carrasco
    Griezmann ---- Lukaku

Uzoho --- Kudriashov --- Sabaly --- De Arrascaeta

    WC after round 2.
Consider to change Coutinho - Stones ---> Isco - Walker

      Very nice tbh.

Swap Cavani, Muller for Werner, Isco and you basically have my team. Have a slightly better bench too.

      Why Hamed over Hegazy?

Not sure you'll want to gamble on N'Diaye on the final game of each round.
