World Cup 2018 – Team Analysis – Senegal

We begin our Group H team previews with Senegal, whose squad features several names that Fantasy Premier League managers will already be acquainted with.

Sadio Mane is the headline act, with Cheikhou Kouyate, Mame Biram Diouf and Idrissa Gueye among the other familiar faces in coach Aliou Cisse’s squad.

Senegal would welcome a repeat performance of their one and only previous World Cup appearance in 2002, when they shocked holders France en route to a quarter-final spot.

The Lions of Teranga begin their World Cup campaign with a match against Poland in Moscow on Tuesday 19 June, before an encounter with Japan in Yekaterinburg five days later. Senegal’s final group fixture is against Colombia in Samara on Thursday 28 June.

Road to Qualification

Drawn to play Madagascar, then ranked 122nd in the world, in a two-legged second round tie, Senegal’s CAF qualification campaign almost got off to the most humiliating of starts. Cisse’s side were 2-0 down after 70 minutes of the first leg before late goals from Diouf and Mane rescued a draw for the Senegalese.

Madagascar were despatched 3-0 in the return leg in Dakar, with Senegal progressing to the third and final round of qualification to face South Africa, Cape Verde and Burkina Faso.

A 2-0 opening-day win over Cape Verde preceded a 2-1 defeat to South Africa, a result that was to be annulled by FIFA and the fixture later replayed following the suspension of match referee Joseph Lamptey.

Back-to-back draws with Burkina Faso left Senegal with plenty to do, but a late win over Cape Verde (Diafra Sakho and Cheikh N’Doye on target in the final ten minutes) and Burkina Faso’s 3-1 defeat in South Africa swung the group in Senegal’s favour.

A 2-0 win over Bafana Bafana in the replayed fixture in Polokwane sealed qualification with a match to spare before Senegal won the return meeting 2-1 four days later.

Only Uganda (two), who failed to qualify, conceded fewer goals then Senegal (three) in the third round of CAF qualification, though four other teams (including fellow qualifiers Tunisia, Nigeria and Morocco) scored on more occasions than the Lions of Teranga (ten).

Discounting the invalidated defeat in South Africa, Cisse’s troops remained unbeaten in eight qualification fixtures and kept five clean sheets on the way.

All 23 players called up by Cisse this summer made at least one start during qualifying.

Most starts: Idrissa Gueye (8), Cheikhou Kouyate, Kara Mbodji, Sadio Mane (7), Kalidou Koulibaly (6), Lamine Gassama, Saliou Ciss (5), Khadim N’Diaye (4), Abdoulaye Diallo, Salif Sane, Moussa Wague, Moussa Sow, Badou Ndiaye (3)

Most goals: Diafra Sakho, Cheikh N’Doye, Sadio Mane, Mame Biram Diouf (2)

Most assists: Sadio Mane (5)

Pape Souare and Oumar Niasse were the headline omissions from Cisse’s 23-man squad.

Senegal’s 2-0 win over South Korea in a behind-closed-doors friendly on 11 June was their first victory in five internationals: uninspiring draws with Uzbekistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Luxembourg (Senegal scoring only one goal in those 270 minutes) preceded a 2-1 defeat to Croatia.

Cisse’s formation of choice in qualification was largely 4-3-3/4-5-1, though a 4-2-3-1 and 5-4-1 has been deployed on occasions.

Gueye and Kouyate will provide the steel in the centre of the park, allowing the likes of Mane, Mbaye Niang and Ismaila Sarr the freedom to attack. Kalidou Koulibaly is the rock at the heart of the Senegal defence.

Key Targets

Sadio Mane looks excellent value as a £7.0m-rated midfielder on Fantasy iTeam, given how integral he is to the Senegal attack.

Mane was directly involved in seven (two goals, five assists) of his country’s 15 qualification goals and hit double figures in the Premier League for the fourth successive season this year.

In a team blessed with an abundance of offensive talent, Mane – who will feature either on the flank, as a “number 10” or even as the spearhead of the Senegal frontline, depending on Cisse’s formation – is perhaps the only certain starter in attack.

Mane is priced as a £8.5m forward on McDonald’s FIFA.

Kalidou Koulibaly is one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe right now and looks a steal at £5.0m on McDonald’s FIFA, particularly for Senegal’s second group match against a weak-looking Japan side.

Though he has yet to score in international football, the Napoli centre-half registered five Serie A goals from centre-back this season – all from set-piece situations.

Koulibaly is listed at £5.9m on Fantasy iTeam.

The Long Shots

Senegal’s wealth of options in attack means that all other players bar Mane are essentially a punt.

Moussa Konate (£5.9m on Fantasy iTeam | £6.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) has scored two of Senegal’s four friendly goals since qualification was sealed, including a last-minute penalty in the 2-0 win over South Korea.

Konate faces stiff competition from Diafra Sakho (£6.3m on Fantasy iTeam | £5.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) up front, however.

Ismaila Sarr could be a breakout star this summer. The 20-year-old Rennes winger, who can play across the frontline, is listed as a £5.7m midfielder on Fantasy iTeam and a budget £5.0m forward on McDonald’s FIFA and could be an absolute steal if, as predicted, he features in Cisse’s starting XI.

Sarr started all three of Senegal’s May/June friendlies and scored in the 2-1 defeat in Croatia.

The young attacker scored five goals and registered three assists in 22 Ligue I appearances this season.

Mbaye Niang (£6.2m on Fantasy iTeam | £5.5m on McDonald’s FIFA), who could feature on the opposite flank to Sarr, is a slightly more expensive and less attractive attacking proposition.

Niang, who spent part of 2016/17 on loan at Watford, was in and out of the Torino side this season, scoring on four occasions and recording one assist. The 23-year-old winger is yet to score for the national side in seven appearances.

An injury-hit season looks to have cost Kara Mbodji (£5.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) his place at the heart of the defence. If selected, Mbodji is an even bigger aerial threat from set pieces than Koulibaly, having scored five goals from centre-half in 52 international appearances – including the headed winner in Senegal’s final qualifying group fixture against South Africa last November.

Fantasy managers looking for a budget defender will want to consider Youssouf Sabaly (£5.5m on Fantasy iTeam | £4.0m on McDonald’s FIFA). The full-back featured in Senegal’s final two qualifying fixtures and started both of Senegal’s June friendlies against Croatia and South Korea.

    Evening all! 🙂

Back for fantasy WC after a nice break.

    Lets get started then.

Who are the must haves? Best 4m playing defs? Best 5m playing mid? Any good cheap strikers? WC in GW 2? What's the popular chip strategy?

Idowu of Nigeria is 4.0, a starter and possibly OOP.. Played left midfield in their last friendly.

5.0 mids.. I've heard of the Uruguay 1s.. Amrabat, Nandez, but don't know much about them.

Cheap strikers.. Smolov (8.0), Mitrovic (7.5), Joel Campbell (7.0), Boutaib (6.5)

Not sure about the wildcard, I've tried to pick a balanced and nailed team so if they do well I'll WC after the second week. As for BB, I want to wait and see, though with the ability to bench players who haven't done well I don't expect BB to be as big an advantage as in FPL.

The only thing I'm sure of is I'm playing the max captain on semis or final.

How’s it looking? Isco instead of anyone for Round 1? Will likely get him for R2 anyway... or find .5 mil somewhere else and do carvajal —> Meunier / 6.0def??

      Caballero (Uzoho)
      Danilo Carvajal Mojica (Hegazi/Varela Sabaly)
      Mueller JRod Eriksen Aldawsari Milivojevic

If you have 15 strong team with good fixtures, does it make sense to Bench boost in Round1?
      My team:
      Uzoho,Pickford
      Godin,Kimmich,Meunier,Dalsgaard,Kudriashov
      Isco,Coutinho,Muller,Carrasco,Lo Celso
      Griezmann,Cavani,Diaz

I know Diaz might play only 30 minutes but it is seems like a bench boost team to me. Any thoughts?

Nah, think I'll take the approach of going mostly in for the favourites in knockouts so that I've got a good team in the quarters with a few transfers if needed

Nah, 3 transfers will be enough to get 11 starters in QF, whereas 1 transfer in R3 may not be enough to do that.

Plus we get 2x5 after QF.

Shame we only get 3 FT's for QF's, it would make more sense to have 5 at that stage and 3 for the final/3rd games when we will be selecting from the same 4 teams as the round before.

I have Messi at the moment. The consensus is that a balanced 15 is more important than two 12m players up front since you're likely to get a good captain haul elsewhere given that you'll have many chances.

I like your team however, don't change it to make it more template!

Hmm, you're putting too much hope on mid-priced midfielders. Imo,
Diallo > Uzoho, Pouraliganji > Sabaly. That saves you 1m and both are starters. There are better defenders priced at 4.5 than a Saudi defender, Mojica and Dalsgaard for example.

Downgrade Meza/Belhanda to 4.5er and I guess that will be enough to do Ljajic > Coutinho/Isco.

Is Isco needed vs Portugal in R1 though?

And Coutinho not hugely needed as I'll have Mueller captain that day anyway

Nope, I don't think Isco is needed. Coutinho on the other hand is a good option I believe even if you are captaining Muller and covers not having Brazilians in your team, I think this is the way to go honestly

Uzoho plays the same day as Schmeichel so that’s not an option

Looks good, I like your cheaper picks although potentially you are rolling the dice on returns from three of those 5 defenders. You are also quite tied to playing your wildcard which might not be the best for flexibility.

                  Really tough one.

Germany have the highest goal-scoring potential out of them, Peru, Serbia and Denmark (due to groups).

But Cueva, Ljajic and Eriksen are all potentially stand out players for their nations.

I'd avoid Ljajic due to potentially trickier games and maybe less guaranteed playing time than the other two.

On that basis (if price is a factor) it looks like I'd be saying go with Muller and Cueva.

Anyone here fancying The Telegraph over McDonalds this year?

Seems like a lot of effort to maintain a bench, chips etc...

Personally quite like the simplicity of the 11 person team, 26 subs in group stage (no limitations) and how you can tailor your team to suit your playing style.

Definitely a need a break from 15 player teams until the start of next season.

Sun Dream Team sounds ideal for you, Telegraph will be tactical with all those subs to use.

I'm not against the idea of implementing tactics (I've already made a spreadsheet ha) I just don't want to have too much to think about.

Has to be a balance between simplicity and complexity. I have shift work to come up against too - that doesn't help.

The 26 subs is actually quite manageable if you plan in advance.

Looks like that's how France will line up to me.

Dembele looks to remain on the bench along with Fekir and Lemar.

They have great options to rotate but I wouldn't be surprised if Giroud, Mbappe and Griezmann all started for the first 2 group games.

Wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume slight rotation for final group game when top spot has already (pretty much) been confirmed.

When is the best idea to play the chips? By the time it come to the later knockout rounds with teams going and the fact there is limited transfers and limited budget, is it possible that we won't have a full squad full of playing players? If thats the case then does the bench boost has to be played early doesn't it?

Yes, pretty common to hang onto a 4m GK and DEF or 4.5m MID so you can afford players. So yeah I would reckon BB will be most effective at some point before R16

Im doing GW 1 mainly to get done with it as not the most productive of chips . Also as I fancy Morocco to hold Iran out so best cheap double up on defence. WC before gw 3 so fits in with the plan.

Yes there are stats on international qualifiers and some friendlies. Unfortunately no xG data and there are quite a few teams in which there isn't data for (African and Asian qualifiers for instance), but its good enough to get a good picture of whats going on. Rashford is the most creative players in terms of chances created per 90 in the whole of European qualifying for instance.
