Community Round-up: Planning for World Cup Fantasy knockout rounds

The World Cup continues to dominate the Fantasy Football Scout Community as the Group Stages end and we head into the knockout rounds.

Strategies for dealing with elimination from World Cup Fantasy Round of 16 onwards have been discussed in our Hot Topics, while some of you were able to avoid the frustrating rotation in Round 3 with some smart thinking.

We’ve got more tables to bring you to help plan for the next round of the World Cup, and we’ve got an update from our array of community competitions.

The Hottest Topics

Not surprisingly, one of our earliest Hot Topics this week warned us of heavy rotation in Gameround 3 of World Cup Fantasy – which is exactly what we got in the end. In an attempt to pre-empt the inevitable changes to starting line-ups, Siva Mohan presented us with a list of players walking the suspension tightrope. Both of those subjects shaped the discussion on chip strategy for the round too.

The assist policy on McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy game was a much debated subject this week, as it differs considerably to what we’re used to with FPL. Legomane went over the goals scored in Uruguay’s 3-0 win over Russia to find out what you think of the two systems.

With team selection for the Last 16 opening up on McDonald’s game much was made of the price changes. 420king went over how they were caluclated while we asked how much money Fantasy managers had gained from the various increases throughout the game.

As the knockout stages are upon us, strategies to navigate the potential minefield of losing Fantasy assets to elimination were an important talking point. The deployment of chips formed a big part of that discussion, while captain tactics were too.

Amid all the World Cup action, we must not forget about Eliteserien. Legomane asked the community this week what their plans were for Gameweek 14 – this is what they said. Later on we asked you how you were hoping to handle Gameweek 15.

We have been also discussing the World Cup aside from Fantasy concerns. VAR has been a big talking point, with ZoumasBloomers starting a discussion about the benefits of the new technology. Meanwhile, we asked you to tell us your favourite World Cup moments so far and to make some predictions – this is what you said.

Community Tables

Those who are completely overhauling their World Cup Fantasy squads for the Round of 16 are in luck once again, as J0E has created two more very helpful tables and there’s Warwick’s Table as well.

The first one, entitled World Cup Sharp Shooters, sorts players by various aspects of their goal threat, suggesting that several premium forwards may be required in our squads for the knockout stages.

How profligate Germany were in their three Group F matches is highlighted in more detail in J0E’s other table, World Cup Chancers. This compares players on their chances of assisting and, aside from pointing out the Germans’ problems, demonstrates how dangerous Brazil will be in the latter stages of the World Cup.

Elsewhere, Warwick’s Table has been assessing the potential shown by players in Russia this summer.

Community Tournaments

With the World Cup Group Stages completed we’ve had time to have look at how our two McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy mini-leagues are getting on.

Niemi is currently leading the way in the Mods and Cons mini-league but has fierce competition elsewhere in the top five:

  1. Niemi (186 points)
  2. Legomane (183 points)
  3. Mat Williams (182 points)
  4. Gregor (174 points)
  5. David Munday (167 points)

As for our public league, there are some excellent scores in our top five:

  1. Hurrikane (220 points)
  2. Pascalevans (218 points)
  3. Eunuch999 (214 points)
  4. Tommobhoy (211 points)
  5. Kudin_88 (210 points)
  6. Lincon316 (210 points)

Frøgball, which uses combined Fantasy scores to represent different nations, threw up some rather interesting alternative World Cup results as the Group Stages ended. Find the latest update HERE.

Congratulations to Thes7s who was the clear winner of Jarvish‘s World Cup themed Yes/No game, with a score of seven. Beginning the game by only getting one of the first four questions correct, Thes7s successfully answered the final six in a row to become the champion.

If you are running a community tournament or are thinking about starting one, and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Interested to see if anyone has any reasoning for this. Neither have a great record for goals or assists.
