Pre-Season

Reid could be useful FPL budget forward at Cardiff in 2018/19

Bobby Reid is expected to add some much-needed goal-threat to Cardiff City this season and has the potential to be a useful budget forward in Fantasy Premier League.

Only two Championship players scored more goals than Reid’s 19 last season, after Bristol City manager Lee Johnson deployed the midfielder as a striker.

With seven assists and a high work rate to his game, Reid could also be well-rewarded by the Bonus Points System too.

THE HISTORY

The majority of Bobby Reid’s career has been spent as an energetic and skilful attacking midfielder, perhaps a little limited by his height and weight. However, Lee Johnson’s decision to deploy him up-front at Bristol City last season has turned the 25-year-old into a pacy and dangerous striker.

Reid has always been a technically gifted footballer but it’s only in the last few years that he has become more of a physical specimen capable of applying his skills. Loan spells at lower league clubs like Cheltenham Town, Oldham Athletic and Plymouth Argyle reportedly helped Reid realise he needed to improve his fitness and stamina. With Plymouth in particular, Reid stood out with his contributions in midfield, but the hustle and bustle of life in League Two took its toll.

The advances Reid made to his own fitness regime and Johnson’s tactical switch of the player’s position paid dividends in 2017/18. Relying largely on his blistering pace and now endless energy, Reid scored 19 goals and assisted seven more in the Championship. Only Derby’s Matej Vydra (21) and Lewis Grabban (20 for Sunderland and Aston Villa combined) scored more than Reid in the hunt for the league’s Golden Boot trophy.

Where Reid stands out compared to his new Cardiff team-mates is in conversion of chances. Despite registering fewer shots inside the box or efforts on target than Zohore last season, his goal tally at the end of the campaign was more than double.

However, Reid still compares favourably to the other important goal-scoring assets in south Wales. His 1.89 shots per game was better than wingers Junior Hoilett and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, as well as midfielder Callum Paterson.

He also registered more shots in the box than those three players, boasting a better minute per shot on target ratio too.

THE PROSPECTS

Whether Reid proves a viable Fantasy asset this season will largely depend on what role he fulfils in the Cardiff team, something we don’t have data on just yet. Target man Zohore was an important figure for Cardiff but the fact that the club has been linked with several strikers over the summer does suggest that his place is far from certain and could be taken by Reid. His addition to the squad adds a completely different dimension to Cardiff’s attack. While Zohore is more of a physical presence used as an outlet, Reid is a pacy and energetic goal-scorer, who proved significantly better at putting the ball in the back of the net.

Alternatively, Reid could potentially replace one of either Mendez-Laing or Hoilett on the flanks. However, the fact that he is a converted centre-forward does always leave the door open for Warnock to switch him back into midfield; he mentioned upon signing Reid that “he can play a number of positions”. In that area of the field, Reid was nowhere near as much of a goal-threat. 21 goals in all competitions in 2017/18 was almost double the combined tally from his first seven years as a professional player.

Of course the other factor to consider is that Reid’s 2018/19 opposition will be considerably stronger than ever before in his career. This is his first taste of Premier League football and the same is true for the vast majority of his new team-mates. In fact, goals may be an area in which Cardiff struggle this season. Compared to Wolves and Fulham, the Bluebirds did not return to the top flight on the back of attacking prowess – their 69 goals in 46 matches was only sixth-best in the Championship and even bettered by 18th-placed Hull City. Instead, their success was built on a strong backline and the best defence in the division (39 goals conceded).

Obviously Reid is likely to shift Cardiff’s focus for winning matches more towards attack than defence but he will still have settle in his new environment before he can be relied upon. However, he will still have some appeal during pre-season on account of an expected FPL price around £6.0m or below and a work-rate that will be rewarded by the BPS.

Reid registered a combined total of 68 successful tackles and interceptions last season, a tally that was level with Roberto Firmino and only bettered by Jordan Ayew (84) among forwards on FPL. With that statistic contributing towards bonus points, Reid is likely to one to pick up the extras when he does score or assist.

Going for Dzemaili as my captain tomorrow as a differential. (I don't have Kane)

Had a bit of a shocker all tournament really, so having to try something a bit different!

Assuming England win, what would you do with this lot? Wildcard and bench boost used already, but not made any transfers yet this round (so got 3 left).

    Pickford, 3.9
    Pavard*, Boyata*, Lovren, Strinic, Maguire
    Rakitic, Modric, Carrasco, Pogba, Lingard
    Kane, Giroud, Lukaku

Pavard banned and Boyata didn't play. Get rid? Pavard I'll probably go back to in the semis if France progress.

    How do these moves sound?

    Pavard to L Hernandez
    Boyata to Trippier
    Lukaku to Mbappe

Gives me 5 England, 4 France, 4 Croatian and a Belgian. A little bit risky, but can afford for one of England, France or Croatia to crash out before the semis and I'll have enough transfers to carry me through.

Thanks - my bad! Will definitely keep him then.

Boyata will probably go for Trippier.

May also lose Lukaku to Mbappe.

Carrasco doesn't seem to do much, but can't see a much better alternative for £7.3 or less.

Yeah tearing my hair out with this one haha. You say D? Hmm Granqvist has been superb this tournament, wish I had him from the start. Sweden have been solid at the back and the Swiss are not the most potent up front so a clean sheet is possible I guess.

We should hopefully be able to do some substitutions during the final round if go heavy on the third place game once we see the lineups. Could potentially earn us a few points. We'll be picking from the same batch of players as the previous round. Does that make sense?

So, while we choose our squad, substitutions, transfers, and captains, we are also making predictions as to who goes through and go performs well.

Here, let us analyze the performances (in a neutral way, of course) till now and have our say.

    Who will be the winner?
    Who will be the runner-up?
Who will win the 3rd place?
    Who will finish 4th?
Who will win the Golden Boot?
Who will win the Golden Ball?
Who will win the best young player?

    My pickings:

    Brazil
    Croatia
    France
    England
    Kane
    Modric
    Mbappe

    Some justifications for my pickings.

For me, much will depend on England vs Colombia today. Colombia has it takes to win the game but from a neutral fan, England looks a more cohesive unit this time and has a top-notch striker in form. If England wins today, they can beat Sweden or Switzerland with ease. With Switzerland's strength being their defense and having to miss out on two of their key players, Sweden notches it for me.

That leaves Harry Kane with 3 matches still to play. He can get a combine of 2 goals against Colombia, Sweden, and France. The close competitor is Romelu Lukaku for sure, who I think will lose out against Brazil next game. Even if he doesn't, I highly doubt him being a big game player.

Brazil looks the team to beat. Belgium, after their narrow-escape against Japan, I don't think can get past Brazil.

Meanwhile, Uruguay should finally lose their first game against the favorites France. However, taking into account that past world cup winners have an excellent defensive record, France, who conceded 3 against Argentina, has a historic disadvantage against Brazil. So, Brazil to win the Semis against the French for me. But, Kylian Mbappe should continue to impress and should win the best young player.

That leaves us with Croatia. They have been solid at the back comparatively with 2 goals conceded. The spirit to get back against Denmark within a couple of minutes was commendable. We saw that they can even hold their nerves in the shoot-outs. I think they can get past Russia and England (or, Colombia if you like). But, Finals against the mighty Brazilians will be tough. They are fortunate for the draw they have got, but they have earned it on merit--as the group winners of Group D. And, their best player Luka Modric should inspire them to the Finals and win the Golden Ball. Maybe, Coutinho or Neymar will come second and third.

    What are your predictions? 😉

Most on here will disagree, but Sweden are tactically astute..and should they get past Switzerland (which I think they will) they will give a really tough fight to Colombia...
Agree with the rest..Brazil vs Croatia final.. Brazil to win

Neymar is a better player than Griezmann.

You need to understand the market or stop gambling.

Griezman or Neymar have to play harder games as/if they progress. See how many goals golden boot winners normally get in world cups.

    Best option out of these?

    A) Kane (if England go through)
    B) Griezmann
    C) Mbappe
    D) Perisic

Have Neymar for captain on 1st day.

Easily Kane if England go through.

The other 3 are kinda similar in potential. Griezmann is a big game player and being on pens is really good. Mbappe much less likely to be effective against the compact deep defending of Uruguay. Perisic is a nice wild card.

I'd take Kane first then Griezmann then Perisic.

Twist captain from Hazard to either:

    Granqvist
    Quintero
    RRod

Twist Hazard C or switch to:

    1. Kane
    2. Quintero
    3. Granquist
    4. Somer
    5. Akanji

    ?

Kane all day..5 isn’t nearly enough for a captain when you have Kane to play. If you’re not gonna twist to Kane then what’s the point of owning him?

Something to do with Kane having to score 5 to breakeven (because you're on -5 overall score when you switch)

    Hazard or Kaku out?

Hazard/Kaku, Isco, Carvajal to Mbappe, Pogba, Pavard?

Or other mid in place of Isco?

I guess Kaku out. That’s what I’m planning to do.
      Sure about triple France?

Just Kaku has this great ownership.
Not sure and dunno whom to fit in mid.

Hazard on pens and his track record of turning up in big games unlike Kaku makes me want to keep him.

Yup options in mids are a bit scarce. I’m waiting for today’s matches to decide.

Any chance of Reid being classed as a midfielder... if so he could be a good punt. Him & Sessegnon could be the OOP options this year. Hopefully Ashley Young classified as a DEF also if Utd don’t sign another left back

How could Sess be OOP when he played most games last season in the front 3? The only way I see is reverse OOP ...

Not sure about desktop site. Can't see it on app, though it's easy enough to tell if you scroll thru the Round scores

Considering Rakitic as Isco replacement (I don`t have Modric). Could be also on penalties now? Good idea?

He looked vaguely threatening, but neither Rak or Mod have inspiring penalty area touch stats.

I suspect Modric will retain pens unless there's been any suggestion from the camp

I thought Rebic looked the biggest threat. Followed by Perisic, Mandzukic then Modric

Regarding the 3rd place playoff. Does anyone plan to go heavy on that game?

Historically more goals in that game than the final and we get to see the lineups

I intend to. Plenty of goals and there will be rotation so there could be a few differentials.
