Best Brighton players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – The Complete Members’ Analysis

Brighton and Hove Albion‘s debut season in the Premier League was an all-round success, with the Seagulls never seriously involved in the relegation shake-up at any point during the campaign.

Their players were an inexpensive source of Fantasy points too, with five Brighton assets breaking the 100-point mark in Fantasy Premier League.

Glenn Murray and Pascal Gross proved to be excellent value in attack and midfield, while Mathew Ryan, Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk were popular budget buys in defence.

However, Brighton’s away record was the worst in the Premier League in 2017/18, the Seagulls picking up just 11 points and scoring on only ten occasions on their travels last season.

The Seagulls’ form at the Amex Stadium was admirable, though, with only five teams losing on fewer occasions (four) than Chris Hughton’s side.

On paper, then, Brighton assets would have been best used in rotation. However, half of the Seagulls’ ten clean sheets came on the road, as did five of Murray’s 12 league goals.

Gross, at least, was a Fantasy asset who obliged a home/away rotation policy: only two of the 15 goals that the German midfielder was directly involved in (both of which were assists) were scored away from home.

With the pragmatic Chris Hughton at the helm for three-and-a-half years now, there should be no real tactical surprises from Brighton next season. What may change, of course, is the personnel. The arrival of Leon Balogun and Florin Andone will put pressure on the established centre-backs and strikers who are already at the club.

Members can read on to see our full analysis of Brighton’s underlying statistics in 2017/18, which will give Fantasy bosses a heads-up on which players to consider for the coming season.

This will obviously wait until the lineups are announced, but:

    Muslera, Olsen
    Munier, Carvajal*, Miranda, Trippier, Hernandez
    Coutinho, Modric, Isco*, Lingard, Inui*
    Hazard, Costa*, Mbappe

    Carvajal -> Pavard
    Isco -> Paulinho/Willian (which?)
    Costa -> Griezmann

    Any observations?

Personally would not want to double up France attack over that solid Uruguay defence and would pick Kane over Griezmann. And Willian as with Casemiro out Paulinho likely to play in deeper role

Does this balance look OK after using my 3 transfers or would you get Rakitic or Lingard over Willian ?

4 Brazil (Alisson Miranda Coutinho Willian)
    2 Uruguay (Godin Bentancur)
    2 France (Pavard Mbappe)
    2 England (Maguire Kane)
    2 Sweden (Olsen Granqvist)
    1 Russia ( Golovin)
    1 Croatia (Modric)
    1 Belgium (Lukaku)

Hmm. Tough that. You`re fine if Brazil goes through. Id maybe instead of Golovin and Willian look at those that are expected to go through. Maybe Lingard and Modric/Rakitic for instance.

Worth upgrading Hazard or Mbappe to Neymar and get Lingard/Golovin in midfield? Or should I leave the forwards and get Willian to try cover Neymar?

Hazard has returned in every game he's played. He got an assist and hit the post last game.

There's no covering. Mbappe to Neymar if you have to. Argentina getting destroyed was no surprise. Uruguay will be hard.

Need help with my transfers. Currently on this -

    Alisson Hassen
    Hernandez Miranda Granqvist Meunier Ramos
    Isco Coutinho Lingard Quintero Bentancur
    Neymar Lukaku Costa

Thinking of taking a -4 to go Meunier, Ramos, Isco, Costa to Maguire, Lovren, Willian, Kane. Maguire and Lovren both with good chances of clean sheets and Kane just essential at this point imo. Willian gives me 5 Brazil players and Rakitic is similarly priced. Only have 8.9m alongside the other transfers so can't afford Modric so the basic questions are - how does that look and Willian or Rakitic? Haven't been around much so haven't seen any great reasoning either way.

      Great moves.

Willian will likely play as a winger (not front 3):

Here is a bit on Rakitic:
      https://www.reddit.com/r/FantasyPL/comments/8vxmbq/russia_vs_croatia/

"I think Croatia will win easily, but I wouldn't take Rakitic. He has really defensive role in our squad and is really unlikely to get assists/goals so you are looking at 3 pts for 8.5 price. I would rather get cheaper midfielder and take better striker than Mbappe, but that's just me."

"Rakitic is big unknown. He had defensive role until the last game against Denmark. In that match, he was playing way ahead of Modric and was attacking all the time + he was on set pieces as well. He was basically playing a Modric role, who was sitting way back and barely made it near the box. So big question is: Will Croatia go back to their style, letting Modric to attack and Rakitic playing defense or other way around, like in the last game? It is worth to monitor."

"Even in last game, 2nd half he played extremely defensive. And it really depends on our last midfielder, if Brozovic starts, you can bet that he'll play full defence."

A question for you Fffrog. I notice you have Lingard. What do you think of him as an option? I'm currently deciding between these two:

      A) Golovin and Maguire
      B) Lingard and Pavard (exact money so I can't stretch to Hernandez or anyone else)

      Cheers,

Cheers for this - amazing stuff. I'd probably go B but not a lot in it, Lingard much more attacking threat and playing in a better team. Pavard could keep a cleanie this week but that'll probably be the end of his returns, whereas Maguire could genuinely make the final (sounds very odd saying that seriously). Upon thinking about it, B - both players likely to play in all remaining rounds (3/4 playoff included) and both could get returns.

I'm thinking of doing Ramos, Isco, Costa to Kane, Willian and Pavard. Not sure the -4 to ship Meunier who has a decent assist potential is worth it, but I get that you're then getting two decent defenders who 'should' go through (although Sweden have beaten NL, IT, MX and SU in the last year so Eng aren't exactly the biggest toughest fixture for them).

W v R depends how nervous you are about Brazil crashing out I guess. Willian looked good last game, but has flattered to deceive in the others (and still only got a single assist). Haven't watched Croatia so can't really comment on Rakitic

      1. FFFrog
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Look like great transfers - as you've said getting rid of Meunier is more a way of getting other players in. Sweden undoubtedly a top side but as an Englishman even I'm starting to believe that this team are quite special and I can't really see a better option than Kane/ Maguire for their price.

I will likely go Rakitic to spread the risk more because I very much think it's a 50/50 decision either way. Croatia have looked decent and obviously have much nicer fixtures, but Brazil clearly the best team in the competition so far.

Yeah that's all fair enough reasoning.

I'm trying not to get sucked into the hype - we've not created enough in open play for my liking, but yeah there's a bit of me that's thinking this our chance to go a bit further!

If you look at his xG for the last 4 seasons he has 0.49 goals per game last season, 0.46, 0.57, 0.39.

His price point is that of an elite level goal scorer, although he is young, so its possible that he still develops into one.

If you believe in the predictive power of xG, Lukaku and Firmino are the 2 more overpriced players in FPL.

Can't say he made me sit up and take notice. I only know a couple of Colombians.

He scored three goals in three games as a centre-back.

FPL would price him at 7.0

Most likely. They didn't handle Ryan's case well at all.. What a waste.

He's been absolutely shambolic for Barcelona, but he looks a different player for Colombia. It would indeed be interesting - looks like the PL suits his playing style a lot more.

Agreed mate, I think he was carrying an injury last season. Still young and ready to learn.

Yeah, true mate. He wasn't given too many opportunities, to be fair. And when he did play, it was usually with Vermaelen. He has a lot of potential.

    pavard - godin - meunier - granqvist - Maguire
    betancur - couthinho - rakitic - modric - cleasson
    lukaku - kane - mbappe

    Ok, lets do this.

    Muslera, Subasic
    Trippier, Maguire, Fagner, Granqvist, Pavard
    Modric, Coutinho, Willian, Golovin, Claesson
    Kane, Lukaku, Mertens

On a -4, but got 15 strong players and feeling great about this round. Only worry is double Belgian attack, but ah well.

Honestly think this is a little poor. Brazil, imo, are heavy favourites and Neymar will have alot of luck. You've sat on the fence for that game. Pogba seems an absolute waste - he doesn't get forward in this formation very much, and you are wasting two spots with a 4m and a 4.3. Why not downgrade Pogba, bring in a better back up gk, and use a fifth mid who will play? I'd re-look at it, and consider the point of using a Wildcard which rids you of two spots.

Brazil will lose imo... the hype behind this team is overrated.. they played against costa rica, swiss, serbia and mexico till now and drew the only strong opponent they had... .. if not I hve spread my losses with 2 BEL nd 2 BRA....

Pogba is my differential... not chnging tht...

The whole point of WC is to pln for the future... Why have 3 mediocre players who might score 2 points from the bench.. insted of having one good differential.

Brazil won't lose - they are much better and more solid than they've been given credit for. To claim that they haven't played good teams but Belgium have is absurd tbh. Look at what they did in the South American qualifiers after the change in management - they played teams on a different level to those faced by Belgium, and the manager is clearly more tactically sound and his team more cohesive.
And the point is that Pogba isn't a good differential and the point is simple maths and to guard against shocks. You could have three players for the price of one who has contributed nothing so far. What Pogba have you been watching in this tournament?

WC this week - Can't decide the front three and stuck between - Kane, Mbappe, Lukaku, Neymar (drop 1)... also thought about Greiz vs Mbappe based on pens but, extremely tough call.

Thinking Kane, Neymar, Lukaku - thoughts?
