How to Play FPL Draft – A Beginner’s Guide

Fantasy Premier League Draft is free to play and runs parallel with old-school FPL. If you’re already registered for the long-running FPL game, you can also immediately get involved with Draft.

Draft uses exactly the same scoring system as FPL with only one exception: there are no captains or vice-captains.

There are also no chips or Wildcards.

For the uninitiated or those needing a refresher on the rules, here’s a brief guide on how to play the game.

How to Play

Joining a League/The Draft

The first step is to create or join a league. Private leagues can include up to 16 managers, although the game itself states that eight is the recommended number. Eight, indeed, is the limit for public leagues (although four or six managers are also permitted) – you can enter those with random members of the FPL Draft community.

Like the traditional FPL game, leagues can run in the classic form or in the head-to-head format.

The key selling point of Draft is that each 15-man squad within a private/public league is unique, so only one team in each league can, for example, own Harry Kane or Mohamed Salah.

The draft system used is described as a “snake draft”, where managers take it in turns to select players until a squad is complete over 15 rounds. An example four-team league would follow this pattern at the draft pick stage:

Round 1: Team A, Team B, Team C, Team D
Round 2: Team D, Team C, Team B, Team A

Unlike the traditional FPL format, there are no budgets or player prices – so there is plenty of room for premium assets.

League administrators can set a draft date and time for private leagues, while public league drafts begin 30 minutes after the first team joins. Everything will need to be sorted before the Gameweek 1 deadline on August 11th, however.

Fantasy managers can build a watchlist before the draft, and this can act both as a shortlist of players you are coveting and also a list to govern your automatic picks should you be “away from keyboard”.

There is also the opportunity to take part in a mock draft, allowing you to experience the draft process before doing one for real.

Transactions

Transfers, or “transactions” as they are known in Draft, are made in three ways: Fantasy managers can make “waiver requests”, dip into the free agent pool or trade with another manager in their mini-league.

After the draft has completed, you can trade players with other managers in your league – depending on how it has been configured. Your league administrator can allow no trades, all trades unvetted or trades that need administrator/other managers’ approval.

The waivers, meanwhile, operate like transfer requests from managers who propose both the unattached player they want and the player being swapped out. A weekly deadline is set for waivers to take place and, when that is reached, they operate a lot like the draft.

Indeed, before the season starts, managers get their first waiver requests granted in the reverse order of the draft. So if you went last in the draft in Round 1, you will be the first to get your waiver request processed. However, once you have succeeded with a waiver, you then go to the back of the queue.

Things change when the season starts, with the waivers granted in reverse order of the league table. So if you’re bottom of your private/public league, your waiver will be granted first to give you the best opportunity to strengthen your team.

Inter-manager trade offers can be made each Gameweek until the waiver deadline passes. If trades in your league require approval, then the trade deadline will be 24 hours before the waiver deadline.

Players that are free agents become available once all the waiver requests and manager trades are made. These consist of players remaining in the pool and players that were released by other managers in the previous Gameweek.

Managers can draw from the free agent pool 24 hours before the Gameweek deadline and it’s on a first-come, first-served basis.

Fantasy Premier League have also published an FAQ and a list of rules on the Draft game, should further help be needed.

    Some early thoughts.

If DDG gets above 50% ownership, you'll have to pinch your nose and get him. Fab is bottom of the season ticker for the first 10 games, too.

    Triple Palace is viable.

Lots of choice up front now; lots of value to be found as well with midfielders being reclassified.

3-4-3 is a must? Spoilt for choice up front. Struggling to pick just 3 strikers.

        Midfield options just as plentiful.

Sess at 6.5, United mids sub 8, Silva 8.5

5 midfielders £9m and under who scored 150 points.
        1 striker who did.

Haven't really processed it yet tbh and prob won't until after the pre-season games but Silva looks value and Aguero seems kindly priced considering, so will be tempted to start with both of those! Fabianski has been my main GK for two seasons running so delighted to see him at 4.5!
Masuaku looks one of the very few 4.5 utility mids available but I haven't looked thoroughly 🙂

Not seeing Everton players in (m)any RMTs. I know they were bad last season but Marco Silva has proven to be an attacking manager and their first 5 fixtures are: wol, SOU, bou, HUD, WHU. Sigurdsson (7.5), Tosun (7.0), Walcott (6.5), Coleman and Baines (5.5) all look like potentially strong options for our squads. Thoughts?

Mahrez signing means Bernardo could start to play CM as he was intended to be Silva’s replacement. Jorginho and Gundogan mean plenty of possible rotations too. Sane didn’t play WC, and has very little to no competition on the left side. Easy pick for me.

Sane and Eriksen nailed into my team

Eriksen’s fixtures and WC run make me a bit hesitant on him. I’ll wait on that one.

Think the same. Same should be good for August-Sept at least. Mahrez will probably be eased in even if it goes through.

If Sterling gets to the final, I'm getting Mahrez.

If he manages to nail down a spot in Sterling's absence, he will be one of the top scoring players in the game.

That’s a good call. I still think I’d take Sane for 0.5 more just because he has much less competition and he’s rested.

Sterling will play in the world Cup final then not get into his club team? You sure???

Mahrez could play over Sane when Sterling returns. Both left-footed.

So you're saying Sane is unquestionably more nailed than Silva?

In which case I may have to search for the 1.0

      1. ★Kuntheman★

Undoubtedly more nailed, and much cheaper than I expected.

Sane may not start with Mendy playing?

Highly doubt that. Pep was tinkering with systems then. He settled on the 4-3-3 after that.

I do agree with your Sane theory for sure mate but Silva is so well priced (will be equally well rested) and has been so important to City, can see both pretty nailed at the start so worth saving the mill imo 😉

This is my one-on-one Brazil vs Belgium comparasion. Belgium has a little edge:

    Alisson vs Courtois 2
    Fagner vs Mounier 2
    T Silva vs Alderweireld 0
    Miranda vs Vertonghen 0
    F Luis vs Carrasco 2
    Fernandinho vs Kompany 1
    Paulinho vs Witsel 1
    Coutinho vs De Bruyne 2
    Willian vs Mertens 1
    G Jesus vs Lukaku 0
    Neymar vs Hazard 0

Don't know what the numbers mean but Brazil is better.
      Defensively it isn't even close.

What do those numbers mean? This is how I'd do it.

      Courtois > Alisson
      Meunier > Fagner
      T Silva > Vertonghen
      Kompany > Miranda
      Marcelo > Carrasco
      Fernandinho > Witsel
      KDB > Paulinho
      Coutinho = Hazard
      Lukaku > Jesus

      Neymar, Willian > Alderweireld, Mertens

It's pretty even on a pure head to head. But that last one really swings it to Brazil I think.

I hope Belgium beat them but Brazil are the much stronger unit. Carassco and Meunier to a slightly lesser degree are really weak links imo!

So I've just looked in and my previous team like this. Would like to know your opinions.

    Pickford - Fabianski
Trippier, Ward, Daniels, Bednarek and Tomkins.
Eriksen, Sane, Ramsey, Willian and Neves.
    Lukaku, Firmino and Zaha.

      Get 2 4.5 keepers or Pick with a 4.0.

Trip (spurs depth and wc) and Ward (age and Europa rotation risks. Daniels has little c/s pontential. Bednarek not nailed

    Costa & Isco & Sommer > Kane & Cheryshev & Subasic?

    Gives me:
    Subasic
    Trippier, Meunier, Caceres, Granq,
    Coutinho, Modric, Cheryshev
    Kane, Neymar, Lukaku

Claessen bench - rest of bench dead

Play MC, WC & BB still in hand.

It's a shame there's no nailed on Cardiff keeper, and that Newcastle's keeper has been priced at 5.0m.

Struggling to find a 4.5/4.5 keeper combo I like.

I worry West Ham are too attacking. Fabianski's high score was because of the 3 pen saves.
