Maguire delivers on goal threat to fire England to semi-final against Croatia

The all-European World Cup semi-final line-up is complete after England and Croatia got the better of Sweden and Russia in Saturday’s two remaining quarter-finals.

England kept their first clean sheet of the tournament in a fairly comfortable 2-0 win over the Swedes, while Croatia progressed via a penalty shootout for the second round running after being pushed all the way by the host nation.

Value buys Andreas Granqvist and Denis Cheryshev bowed out of our Fantasy squads as their respective countries exited the tournament, but there was relief all round for owners of well-backed English and Croatian assets with transfers at a premium ahead of the next deadline on Tuesday night.

We round up all the goals, assists, clean sheets and Fantasy talking points from Saturday’s two quarter-final matches.

England 2-0 Sweden

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

      • Harry Maguire (£4.9m) – 11 points
      • Ashley Young (£5.3m) – 9 points
      • Dele Alli (£8.9m) – 8 points
      • Jordan Pickford (£5.5m) – 7 points
      • Jesse Lingard (£7.5m) – 6 points
      • Kyle Walker (£5.7m) – 6 points
      • John Stones (£5.9m) – 6 points
      • Kieran Trippier (£5.5m) – 6 points

After the late-night drama of England’s shootout win over Colombia in the last 16, this was a relatively straightforward success for Gareth Southgate’s side over a dogged but ultimately limited Sweden team.

We highlighted Harry Maguire (£4.9m)’s dangerous threat from set pieces before the match and the Leicester City centre-back duly delivered on his underlying attacking statistics, powering home a header from an Ashley Young (£5.3m) corner-kick to give England the lead on the half-hour mark.

Raheem Sterling (£8.9m), still without a goal at these finals, wasted a glorious chance to increase England’s lead before the break as he dawdled when put clean through by Jordan Henderson (£6.3m).

Dele Alli‘s (£8.9m) two-year wait for an England goal ended just before the hour when he was left unmarked to nod Jesse Lingard‘s (£7.5m) cross past Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olsen (£5.2m).

England’s other “Harry”, the tournament’s leading goalscorer (£11.2m), blanked and was afforded only one shot on goal from distance in the entire 90 minutes.

On-form Jordan Pickford (£5.5m) made three superb stops to top his clean sheet off with an extra save point.

England XI (3-5-2): Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire; Trippier, Young, Lingard, Henderson (Dier 85′), Alli (Delph 77′); Kane, Sterling (Rashford 90+1′)

Sweden XI (4-4-2): Olsen; Lindelof, Granqvist, Augustinsson, Krafth (Jansson 85′); Larsson, Ekdal, Forsberg (Olsson 65′), Claesson; Berg, Toivonen (Giudetti 65′)

Russia 2-2 Croatia (3-4 pens)

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

    • Denis Cheryshev (£5.6m) – 7 points
    • Mario Fernandes (£5.1m) – 7 points
    • Andrej Kramaric (£7.8m) – 6 points
    • Domagoj Vida (£5.5m) – 6 points
    • Luka Modric (£9.1m) – 5 points
    • Mario Mandzukic (£8.9m) – 5 points
    • Artem Dzyuba (£8.1m) – 5 points
    • Alan Dzagoev (£6.9m) – 4 points

England’s semi-final opponents on Wednesday night will be Croatia, who became the first nation since Argentina in 1990 to win penalty shootouts in two successive World Cup knockout rounds.

Russia’s unexpected run in their home World Cup looked liked it might continue when Denis Cheryshev (£5.6m) scored his fourth goal of the tournament in spectacular style, curling home a 25-yard shot after a lay-off from Artem Dzyuba (£8.1m).

Croatia were level before the break though, former Leicester City striker Andrej Kramaric (£7.8m) nodding home after a cut-back from Milan Mandzukic (£8.9m).

Ivan Perisic (£8.5m) wasted the best chance to win the game in normal time, rattling the woodwork from eight yards after a penalty box scramble.

Domagoj Vida‘s (£5.5m) header from a Luka Modric (£9.1m) corner bobbled apologetically into Igor Akinfeev‘s (£5.0m) goal to give Croatia the lead in extra-time, but the hosts restored parity with just five minutes to go.

Alan Dzagoev (£6.9m), making his first appearance since the opening match over three weeks ago, whipped a free-kick onto defender Mario Fernandes’ (£5.1m) head to send the match to penalties.

Fernandes was one of two Russian players to miss from the spot – the other being Fedor Smolov (£7.7m) – and Croatia could even afford the luxury of Mateo Kovacic (£7.5m) failing from 12 yards as they triumphed 4-3 in the shootout.

Russia XI (4-2-3-1): Akinfeev; Fernandes, Ignashevich, Kutepov, Kudryashov; Zobnin, Kuzyaev; Samedov (Erokhin 54′), Golovin (Dzagoev 102′), Cheryshev (Smolov 67′); Dzyuba (Gazinskiy 79′)

Croatia XI (4-2-3-1): Subasic; Vrsaljko (Corluka 97′), Vida, Lovren, Strinic (Pivaric 74′); Rakitic, Modric; Rebic, Kramaric (Kovacic 88′), Perisic (Brozovic 63′); Mandzukic

Is it possible to leave leagues you're waiting to be added to?

Do you mean leagues you've joined or leagues that you were in, say last season, and are waiting for auto-renewal.

A dream team XI among the 4 teams left is:

    Formation - 5-3-2

    Courtois
    Varane-Stones-Maguire-Pavard-Vida
    De Bryune-Modric-Lingard
    Kane-Lukaku-Griezmann

Plenty of managers will have or already have at least 6-7 of them in their 15 man squad.

So, if you are competing in the mini-leagues, differentials are very important.

Who are your differentials for the last 2 round of games?

Hazard, Alli, Fellaini, Kompany, Vertonghen, Chadli, Young, Trippier, Rakitic, Pickford all capable of hauls

Even Henderson could get an assist

Bournemouth are top of the season ticker for the first 10 games.

I hate Callum Wilson more than anyone. He did so much damage to my team, but ... a new season. A new contract. Worth a punt at £6m?

We know he's capable of braces and hatricks, and could score heavily in the first 10 games.

Yeah he is a transfer waiting to happen. If he's fit for the PL kick off i might go with him just for the first few fixtures until he breaks down, then downgrade to one of the group of 5.5's. He seems to go 4 or 5 and then his body gives up on life.

He will disappoint. again. But, maybe not. However, it is better to go for the tried and tested ones.
Also, a good fixture doesn't guarantee returns too. Not in a competitive league as PL.

I made my world cup transfers last night.
Now I regret getting ali in.... first goal for two years I did not realise that!
There were no similarly priced options I could think of getting.
    Had Modric corners and pens
Already had kdb, thought Rakitić would end up playing deep, Pogba has done very little.
But I still feel I could have spent that 8.9m a bit better!

Am I the only one not getting why Zaha is such a popular pick? He only scored 9 goals last season (that's Danny Welbeck/Ayoze Perez territory), and just because he's now classified as a forward it doesn't mean he'll magically start scoring more 😛

Did he? I had him for a good chunk of that and he never scored more than 3 points for me. I gave him so many chances last season and he kept letting me down. Callum Wilson/Cenk Tosun/Chris Wood all with far superior PPMs.

        1. Zilla
          • 6 Years
          5 years, 9 months ago

          No?
          Vardy - 4.9
          Firimino - 4.9
          Zaha - 4.7
          Arnie - 4.6
          Wood - 4.3
          Tosun - 3.9
          Wilson - 3.6

            • 8 Years

Look at minutes per goal for similarly priced players:

            Wood - 163
            Murray - 183
            Arnie - 211
            Wilson - 233
            Perez - 258
            Defoe - 271
            King - 277

Zaha the worst of the lot at 283. He'd be a good mid-priced midfielder based on these stats, and his assist stats.

              • 8 Years
              5 years, 9 months ago

Now that he'll be classed as a forward, he'll be losing a lot of points based on 4 points per goal, and as I said, he wouldn't magically up his scoring just because of the FPL reclassification.

Triple city and triple pool is the way I'm going right now. May look to get some gunners in after their tough first couple of fixtures... maybe aubameyang and mhyki in for firmino and Dilva...

    Is Tosun nailed?

Niasse, Calvert-Lewin, and even Theo can play there. That's sizeable competition.

A general comment - i'm a Hull fan and when Marco Silva managed us he signed Niasse on loan and he turned into a very strong goalscorer (especially considering he was at a team who were bottom of the table). Wouldn't surprise me to see Niasse have a good preseason and threaten Tosun's place

Is Helder Costa worth getting from wolves or is it worth the extra .5 to get Cavaleiro?

I currently have Cairney. Just looking at alternatives

    Just looking for some advice

I was in my 8th grade math class. All year a particular student, known for being a little wacky, had been occasionally pretending to be Pikachu. Some days he would sit there working on stuff and someone would ask him a question or whater and he'd just respond 'Pika? Piiiika CHUU' or any other combination. Well, one day late in the year we are working on our assignment after recieving the lecture and said kid starts making some weird noises. Starts to shake a little bit. At first I thought maybe he was starting to seize, but just as it starts to get frighteningly violent he stops still as a rock and practically shouts "RAICHU!!!' After a couple seconds of stunned silence, our teacher simply shakes his head and says, 'Derrick, principles office, now.'

So like considering the high press. Is it coming home ??

Can someone explain why Deuleofeu is any good? For 5.5 I'm tempted but don't know much about the lad. Similar thing applies to Wolves. Surely Jota & Douglas are the guys to pick?

    Team currently looks like this;

    Ederson - Fabianski
    Robertson - Coleman - Daniels - Tomkins - Cedric
    Wilson - Mili - Sane - Siggy - Stephens
    Aguero - Zaha - Firmino

Actually tempted to go Firmino & Mane > Salah & Wilson

Deulofeu used to play for Barca tricky player creative inventive if a little inconsistent. He was at everton a fair bit as well on and off.

      https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gerard-deulofeu/profil/spieler/129476

Always looks like a player who is capable of more.

So my whole starting 11 moves on to the semifinal.

    Kane, Lukaku, Mbappe
    Rakitic, Modric, Pogba,
    Pavard, Strinic, Trippier, Kompany
    Courtois

leaves my bench with non-players Kawashima, Sakai, Cuadrado, and Sanchez.

Who should I be looking to pick up for the next two rounds? Fellini and Stones or McGuire are likely options.

Also a concern is Firmino. Liverpool have a lot of people who can play up front. Obviously Bobby is the best option they got and will score a lot of points but surely at the start of the season there is small risk of rotation/ limited game time especially after a World Cup and Champions League Qualification games.

      Ings looks to be off.

Bobby only really played a sub role at the WC and is definitely ahead of Solanke. At the price he walks into my team.

I agree I think he's a great price but if I get him atm would mean going Mane & Bobby ahead of just Salah.

How have you worked around getting Salah & Bobby in the same team?

A cheap (5.5m) 3rd striker given Salah is essentially a forward.

Who is the best Bournemouth midfielder to get?
I have Ibe at the moment at 5.5m I can remember he was great to watch live a bundle of energy.
But Frazer is the same price as him better pick?
Arhur was injured last season only 5.0m

Stan if he can ever get himself fit.

Do like the Bournemouth fixtures but always seem to let me down, leaning towards Everton & Palace instead.

I thought the fixtures looked kinda average 50/50.
Would agree with you on the players letting you down I remember the amount of times Bouremouth threw away clean sheets last year for some reason.
        Stanislas is 6.0m bit pricey?

Whilst he's injured, yup, definitely too pricey. If he could get a run of 10-15 I think he's look like a 7m+ player returns wise.

          Massive if mind.

Their other mids seem to share the points around, so singling one out is tricky.

Know he's flavour of the weekend but no love or Maguire? At least in 0 RMTs.

117 pts last season whilst carrying Morgan. Only 9 clean sheets, Evans has come in so surely that's going up.

    v

Someone like Jones; 15 cleans sheets and 116 pts.

No goal threat? 2 and 4 assists last season v Jones 0 and 0.

12 of the first 15 fixtures look as good as anyone's.

He looks like john Terry MKII

probably Young , but i just noticed that Leicester signed Johnny Evans , i think him and Maguire will make a pretty good pairing , if Leicester keep more clean sheets then Maguire could be gold for 5.5mil

    WC fantasy football...

I’ve got eight made it through to semis (Kane Mbappe Lukaku Modric Trippier Alderweireld Lovren Courtois)

Five transfers with 35 mil to spend and 14 points to catch up. Thinking KDB, Lingard, Fellaini Young and Maguire. Not convinced there’ll be clean sheets in the first semi...

    Any thoughts, other suggestions??

Not confident of clean sheet myself for Fra-Bel, but you also have to stack up on both because of the 3rd place match on Saturday. your front line is sealed so your heavy spending is done already. You already have the hard hitters, would go for a few differentials in the 5 you pick if you want to catch up with the leader.

    Kane Lukaku Griezmann
    KDB Kante Tielemans (Lingard Modric)
    Pavard Vertonghen Trippier Hernandes (Lovren)
    Coutois (Subasic)
