Best Crystal Palace players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

Crystal Palace look set to be a source of effective budget options in the early part of the 2018/19 campaign.

The Eagles favourable fixtures in the first nine Gameweeks, combined with some impressive underlying numbers towards the end of last season, mean there are viable options to consider in defence, midfield and attack.

Under Roy Hodgson, Palace made improvements in more than 20 key areas last time out compared to 2016/17, and that is expected to continue into the new campaign.

That data is available to Fantasy Football Scout members to look at in the Members’ Area, and they can also read our in-depth analysis of it in the article below.

Just finished with my ticker. Here are some results:

Best short term fixtures (1-3): Liverpool, Everton, Watford, Burnley, Bournemouth, Cardiff
Worst short term fixtures: Brighton, Huddersfield, Newcastle, West Ham

Best medium term fixtures (1-8): City, Spurs, Burnley, Everton, Chelsea, Palace, United
Worst medium term fixtures: Cardiff, Newcastle, West Ham, Brighton

    Good runs:
    Arsenal: 3-10
    Bournemouth 1-10
    Burnley 1-8
    Cardiff 1-3
    Chelsea 1-8
    CPL 1-8
    Everton 1-9
    Leicester 2-9
    Liverpool 1-6
    City 2-7
    Utd 4-8
    Spurs 6-9
    Watford 1-3

    - Arsenal from GW3 looks a good choice. Also gives us 2 weeks to assess the team and its players under Emery
    - Bournemouth players are nice fillers. Dont have much confidence in them regardless of fixtures though.
    - Burnleys fixtures are amazing and could represent the same value as last year even at 5.0. The problem is EL and a thin squad. Ill probably stay clear as I find more value in 4.5 bracket.
    - Cardiff starts up nicely then goes on a horrendous run from GW4-8. Staying clear of anyone not named Peltier (if he plays).
    - Chelsea fixtures are good. hud, new, BOU, CDF, whu, sou all have potential for CS and attacking returns. Picks for those that plan on an IB2 WC. Massive uncertainty in the team with Conte still there.
    - Palace and Everton have amazing fixtures up to 2nd IB. Double ups are not out of questions, especially in defense. Some proper attacking talent in those defense lines too, not to mention some value picks in midfield and forward lines.
    - Fulham has average fixtures. Sessegnon probably overpriced. Jury out on Cairney. Could be some decent picks in here.
    - Dont like Leicester fixtures but with Mahrez gone, Gray and Madison are straight on my watchlist. No to their defense from me.
    - Liverpool starts out the strongest. Triple up almost certain for me. The one that doesnt work probably becomes Arsenal.
    - City have the best fixtures out of everyone up to 2nd IB. The problem is the same as always. Pep and rotations. Would quadruple up even if Id have some certainty in playing time but will make decision after seeing how they lineup in preseason.
    - United: willing to start off without even with their defence ownership being as big as it is already. Will look to get someone in in GW4 when the dust settles and we have more prove of how they will lineup. Reckon Bailly at 5.5 could be a steal.
    - Southamptons fixtures are IMO worse than everyone thinks they are. There is a decent possibility they could go without a CS up to Brighton in GW5.Still, they play for Hughes and at 4.5, Cedric is probably one of the best value picks in the game.
    - Spurs on the other hand have better fixtures than people think. Other than the away games at Newcastle and United and the home game against Pool, every off the other 5 games up to IB2 could become a mauling. Massive uncertainty regarding their team though, with half the team still being in WC, Son in Asian games, the ever rotating wingbacks ets. Some short term punts for early WCs in Lamela, Moura and Davies could bring some points.Their GW6-9 run is probably one of the best possible.
    - Like the look off the first 3 fixtures. Might punt on the likes of Deulofeu then switch them out if it doesnt work for some early bandwagons.
    - West Ham got some really bad fixtures. Fab might still get you points though and is probably the most value gk at 4.5. One for the life after WC probably.
    - Wolves are unknown. Fixtures are average, everyone expects big things out of this team. Preseason watch will be ever important.

Just which GWs Id personally say that team goes on a good run of fixtured (ex. Arsenal GW3-10, etc).

Off note, I did my ticker for the first 10 GWs only as from my experience, there is no way I can hold on to the wildcard any longer.

      A) Do the teams not mentioned all have bad fixtures to start?
      B) Are they in any particular order?

When you say a team has better fixtures than people think, what does that mean exactly? You too are a person after all

Good analysis, cheers. Have to disagree on Spurs though - only 3 home games in the first 9 games, and one of those is Liverpool. Not ideal. Wouldn't look at them until GW6.

Its remarkable how many of their team is still at the world cup: Lloris, Trippier, Rose, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Dembele, Dier, Alli, Kane. Thats 6 of their first choice 11. Sanchez and Eriksen didn't finish long ago either, and Son is out for the season start.

      Potential GW1 side of:

      Vorm
      Aurier Sanchez Foyth Davies
      Sissoko Wanyama
      Moura Eriksen Lamela
      Llorente

Not sure I'd back that to get much out of new, FUL, mnu, would you?

    Me vs mate in ML.
I have 4 point lead after substitutions and he has swapped his captain from Hazard to Kane.
Only players we have different is Trippier (me) vs Lovren (him) all other 5 tonight are the same.

Subasic, Maguire, Lingard, Modric & Kane.
Should I stick with Griezmann and take a 4 point lead or match him with Kane or maybe one of the others we have the same and he will take a 1 point lead into tonight's game?

Kane could get two and you'd be stuffed. Odds are trippier keeps a clean sheet and Loren should get two points so if you captain Kane you'd be eight points in front -

No way Pog plays gw1, Spurs are no go due to WC players, awkward fixtures and stadium. Bailly not nailed (might get away with gw1) and wouldn't go double Everton yet (preseason might clear that up though). Need to see how Emery sets up team for Mkhi as Ozil will get a preseason

Putting together the McD's WC 11 dream team this is where I'm at thus far:

    LLoris
    Granqvist | Mina | Varane | Maguire
    Modric | Cheryshev | Coutinho | Inui
    Kane | Griezman

Obviously barring what happens in tomorrow's semi.
Any obvious overlooks? Can't seem to find any good full backs surprisingly all CBs

  7. When World Cup semifinal players returned to Premier League in 2014
    Ohhh Shola Ameobi

    5 years, 9 months ago

I got thinking yesterday about how much the World Cup can have an effect on line ups in Gameweek 1. I did a bit of digging, and focused mainly on the Premier League players involved in the last two games of the 2014 World Cup.

    Argentina:
    - Zabaleta – Started every game at the World Cup. Unused substitute GW1, started GW2.
    - Aguero – Started all 3 group games, 82nd minute substitute in the semi, and 45th minute substitute in the final. (Injured in third group game, and so missed Round of 16 and QF through injury) Substitute appearances vs Newcastle and Liverpool in GW1/2, scoring in both. Started GW3.
    - Rojo – Started all games bar QF. Didn’t play for Manchester United until a work permit was granted in September. Debut on 14th September, played full 90.
    - Demichelis – Started all games QF onwards. Started GW1, and played full 90.

    Germany:
    - Ozil – Started every game at the World Cup, earliest he was substituted off was the 63rd minute in the first group game. Started GW2, played full 90.
    - Schurrle – Made a few substitute appearances, including coming on in the 31st minute in the final. Started GW1 and scored, removed on 78 minutes.
    - Mertesacker – Started first 4 games, didn’t feature again until the 46th minute of the 7-1 against Brazil. 120th minute substitute in the final. Started GW2, and played the full 90.
    - Podolski – Played around 55 minutes in total at the tournament, in the first and last group games. Didn’t even make the bench for GW2, when Ozil and Mertesacker were both starting.

    Brazil:
    - Cesar – QPR terminated his contract 3 days after the start of the season, didn’t play for Benfica until September.
    - Oscar – Started all games for Brazil. Started GW1 for Chelsea, and played 82 minutes.
    - Fernandinho – Started in the Round of 16, QF and SF. Hauled off at HT in the semi, came on at half time in the final match. 73rd minute substitute in GW1.
    - Willian – Only started the 3rd placed play off, otherwise only used as a late substitute. 78th minute substitute in GW1, 70th minute GW2, started GW3.

    Netherlands:
    - RVP – Started all games bar the final group match. Started GW2, although was subbed off after 63 minutes. Scored his first goal in September, in *that* 5-3 defeat to Leicester.
    - Janmaat – Featured in a few substitute appearances. Played full 90 GW1.
    - Vlaar – Started every game at the World Cup. Started, and played full 90, GW1 for Villa.

As you can see, the vast majority of players who you’d consider important to their teams were starting by GW2. Majority were able to feature in GW1. Oscar and Vlaar were clearly on a diet of only Lucozade for the four weeks between the final games and GW1.

Hopefully this is of some use. Apologies if I missed anyone off, it’s late! Focussing on the last four games looks at those with the least rest, so the idea was that this should be ‘worst case’. I had a quick look at the Belgian stars who were knocked out in the QF, Hazard, Courtois, Kompany all started GW1.

By my calculation, there were an extra 4 days between the final (13/07/2014) and the opening day of the Premier League (16/08/2014) compared to this year. Just for comparison's sake 🙂

8 days certainly is significant, I misread dates when I calculated it the first time (yet another reason why its a bad idea to do this stuff when shattered), so that moves QF dates into what were the final slots.

One other thing to note - how likely is it that KDB, Hazard, Lukaku etc get rested in that third place game now? Or at least hauled off early...

It's not about the rest, I don't think. It's about the break they will take after the world cup. The break means they won't join the team for training until a week before the first game at best, so they won't be "up to speed" with the team, tactics, and peak fitness until maybe GW2 or 3.

Luckily Twitter feeds are usually pretty good at letting us know when they're back. I wonder if whether, after what would have been a disappointing end, some of the Belgians take a reduced break?

Don't see why. They are permitted a holiday like the rest of us, and it might even be enforced by the club.

I know a few players sometimes come back before pre-season begins to do extra work. Just a thought that if those players wanted to put a disappointing tournament behind them, they might return as soon as possible? (Which could be after an enforced holiday, don't know how these things work)

No worries. Pre-season team sheets will still form my main thoughts with regard to my GW1 squad, especially the last friendly/Community Shield, however I think this is helpful with regards to the overall picture of fitness, and how many minutes you can expect over the first couple of weeks.

Yes, inked in for me. I think City are getting stronger all the time and can expect more clean sheets this season. Furthermore, with more and more world class midfielder bulging their squad, it's harder to find those stable first-team choices, so I'm looking at Ederson and Mendy as long-term picks despite expecting City to score tons of goals.

  9. Yankee Toffee

Any differing opinions on how City will lineup now? Pep has some decisions ahead. I think he'll go this way:

    Ederson
    Walker, Stones, Kompany, Mendy
    KDB, Jorginho/Fernandinho, Silva
    Mahrez, Aguero, Sterling

Obv some players to be rested in August. In a 4-3-3 Silva and KDB may not be the best fantasy options. Should we be looking at Mahrez immediately, or wait and see?

    Thoughts on the lot?

Agree, I see Mahrez in a lot of teams but while im no expert everything I have heard about Peps coaching and management style is it is extremely precise and particular in regards to where a player is supposed to be and what they are supposed to do in every tiny section of the pitch e has divided up. I think Mahrez will need some time to learn all this and practise/train a bit before starting games.

Re-read my book yesterday, mainly with a view to reminding myself not to fall into the usual traps. I wrote the following (2016) on pre season form. What do you guys look for pre-season? Are your heads easily turned or are you just more concerned with a coaches tactics (these too can be misleading)

    Pre season form
Notoriously unreliable, pre season form is a potential trap which is a very easy one to fall into. Every season there are previously unheralded players that make a big impression during pre season. Very rarely does this form actually carry over into the real season.

The allure of these players is very difficult to resist, they are normally budget friendly and make very tempting targets. Scott Sinclair from Villa was an example from the last pre season. A Hat-trick or two in pre season, before fading into obscurity once the season actually started.

The best thing to do with pre season form is probably to ignore it. However the reality is that it is very difficult to totally block it out. The hype normally gathers its own momentum and the players concerned are hyped on the forums, until they becomealmost impossible to resist.

    1. Yankee Toffee
      • 9 Years
      5 years, 9 months ago

I agree except to ignore it. Form maybe but not formations. Preseason is a great time to see how managers lineup and who might be nailed on, especially in the case of new managers such Arsenal this year. After so long with Wenger, no one knows what might happen there. Ignore the hat tricks and look for oop players and formations, recognizing who might be nailed.

Thanks for the info as usual. Do you have a link to your book?

The book can still be bought from amazon, but I would not recommend it as much of the content was specific to 2016.

Formations can be tricky too. Many managers use pre season to try out new formations, they may have no intention of actually regularly using them, they just trial them in friendly games to check if they have a plan B

Cheers. Just hoping to find the bargains and oop players in preseason. True on formations. FPL managers chomping at the bit in preseason and often make poor decisions. I feel like the first IB will be a big WC time.

One that did suck me in was Depay at Man U . Looked great in pre season, andI and many others fell for the hype rather than stick with someone who had already done it in the premier league.

Little did we know he was one of those players who only really performed when there was no pressure. The new guys probably try much harder in pre season too which possibly makes them look better than they really are

For me pre-season is for scrutinising signs of new tactics and formations, or consolidating old tactics and formations. This is particularly vital for new managers and newly acquired players.

But as you say, you have to be able to identify experimental tactics that are likely to be a 'plan C' in the PL. As for budget players - they are all-to-often place-holders for more senior players; this is especially a factor now with world cup players getting their rests.

What pre season can tell you is how fit a player is, rather like judging a racehorse in the paddock. Has he put on weight, look sluggish, or nice and sharp.

Walcott , (he should do well under Silva)
Arni (if he stays as a forward)

Salah is such a headache. Really can make such a good side without him.

Also thought on Bernardo Silva? Too big of a risk now that Mahrez has signed?

Initially was leaning towards not including Salah from the off, but there are a few factors in his favour.

      1) GW1 captaincy, many of the usual suspects will have a W/C hangover, having gone much further than Egypt. The fixture means he looks by far and away the best (most popular) captain.

      2) A plethora of decent looking cheap defenders and midfielders means he is actually affordable, especially when there is no urgent rush to buy the likes of Kane.

So now thinking best to start with him until the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea sort themselves out and Kane returns, then on first wildcard may be a better time to not have him, depending on how it all looking.

13 is just too much for my taste. I don’t see him outscoring mids by 100 pts and I’m not paying 2M extra for that. What do you expect him to do in 18/19 from a points perspective in comparison to his peers.

I also expect plenty of sides to put that shoulder to the test in the early going. They don’t necessarily need to hurt him to slow him down or make him less effective.

    This is my Salah-less team so far. Draft no.7 ;

    Foster - Fabianski
    Robertson - Cedric - Daniels - Coleman - Tomkins
    Mili - Mane - Ramsey - D.Silva - Jota
    Aguero - Firmino - Zaha

Depending on pre-season will probably end up doing Mane & Firmino to Salah & Wilson but I like the flexibility of this team.

Heavy defence is a neglected virtue. Looks excellent to me.

      Actually, compare my current draft:

      Ederson, Steklenburg
Robertson, Laporte (>Mendy), Bailly, Douglas, Bednerak
Salah (c), Sane (>DeBruyne), Jota, Cairney, Deulofeu
      Firmino, Zaha, Tosun

1.5itb. Will upgrade 2nd fwd and downgrade 3rd to fodder once form is established; cheaper 3 mids are fluid.

I still think he is worth it, pity the fixtures look tough on paper early on. He is much better value than Mikhi.

I like Gross over all of them, ive got him at the moment even with the tough fixtures.

Mili is defensive mid and no way they are getting the same amount of pens as last year, wally is a big punt - there is no advantage to getting him in before you know if he will come good again finally (this isnt a draft, just look and see and get him if hes good), Other two are both promoted and while I have Jota (as well as Gross) I would definitely start with the proven prem scorer over them.
