Money for the “other Harry” but Modric remains most-owned

England and Croatia meet in Moscow this evening in the second World Cup semi-final, with France having already progressed to the final last night.

It is 20 years since Croatia last featured in a World Cup semi-final, while the wait for England has been even longer: Italia ’90 was, as the country has been continually reminded, the Three Lions’ previous appearance in the last four.

Zlatko Dalic’s side comes into this tie off the back of two gruelling knockout round matches in which they were taken all the way to penalties by Denmark and hosts Russia.

England had a relatively comfortable quarter-final win over Sweden, meanwhile, though of course were indebted to Jordan Pickford’s shootout heroics in the round of 16 victory over Colombia.

With two goals and an assist to his name in the tournament already, Luka Modric (£9.1m) is the most-owned player on show this evening and indeed in the McDonald’s FIFA game overall. Over 50% of Fantasy squads now feature the Real Madrid playmaker.

Ivan Rakitic (£8.5m), who has actually had more attempts on goal than spot-kick taker and set-piece specialist Modric this summer, features in 19.7% of Fantasy sides.

Dejan Lovren (£5.0m) is the most popular Croatian defensive option in the McDonald’s FIFA game, with just under a quarter of Fantasy managers putting their faith in the Liverpool centre-back.

Defender Sime Vrsaljko (£5.5m) and goalkeeper Danijel Subasic (£5.5m) have been passed fit to play despite picking up injuries in the win over Russia.

Harry Kane (£11.2m) remains the most popular Fantasy asset in the England squad, but it’s the Three Lions’ “other Harry” who has seen the second-biggest ownership surge since the quarter-finals. Harry Maguire (£5.0m) was bought by around 340,000 new Fantasy managers ahead of Friday evening’s deadline – only Kevin De Bruyne proved a more popular buy – and the Leicester City defender’s ownership has shot up from 5.8% to 24.6% as a result.

Maguire, who scored and kept a clean sheet in the 2-0 win over Sweden, has had more penalty box touches than any other defender at this summer’s World Cup.

John Stones (£5.9m) and Jordan Pickford (£5.5m) are still the most popular routes into the England backline, however.

Jesse Lingard (£7.5m), who has had more attempts on goal than Kane in Russia, sits in 37.8% of McDonald’s FIFA squads.

England XI (3-5-2): Pickford; Stones, Maguire, Walker; Trippier, Henderson, Alli, Lingard, Young; Sterling, Kane

Croatia XI (4-2-3-1): Subasic; Vrsaljko, Lovren, Vida, Strinic; Rakitic, Modric; Brozovic, Perisic, Rebic; Mandzukic

Walker wanted off that pitch. He looked the weak link just before the equaliser. Was getting rattled, silly booking for time wasting early and a few slack moments. I thought he was looking to get subbed off at one point when he went down

Taking nothing away from him as an athlete. He just tired mentally. He's young and doesn't have a lot of experience at cb especially in high pressure situations so I don't blame him. Just my thoughts when I saw your post.

I think it's fair to say that Croatia beat us rather than we lost to them

they were class and for people to laugh at England for losing to such a fantastic team is really unjustified

It's certainly unjustified to laugh at them, I can understand laughing at Germany not reaching the knockout stage.

England don't look like a fourth best team in the tournament, so making it this far is plenty enough to be happy about.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years

Agreed. I think the laughing here is trolling, but I don't mind it too much. I'm not sure about this couter-narrative, trying to paint everything as rosy, but of course, it's not all bad. England did well, and history will show that, but I'll still remember it as a missed opportunity, which we failed to take 🙂

It's funny how people seemed to agree with England's numbness during the game, but now it's over and we've lost, it's all about positivity. 😀

    6. Deulofail

Don't really think that's fair. I'm not just hating because that's what English media do. I watched the game, and saw a lack of the intent we were promised by Gareth, whilst he talked about ensururing they don't regret not trying their best. Sure, England proved that they weren't pants, and they have a bit of control around the pitch, but they barely looked like scoreing aside from set pieces. Yet, it's clear that in 1 minute spells that the team is perfectly capable of taking the game to the opponent, whilst also evident that they lacked sharpness from the start (especially Kane, but others constantly switching off too).

But hey, everyone wants to write their own narrative based on their perspective, and this is mine 😀

you see I would've played Vardy instead up front over Kane as Croatia probably spent hours and hours identifying how to stop Kane

then sub him on at the 80th min

Don't dislike the players or Southgate. But when you have it rammed down your throat by the media 24/7 bitter hatred is fast to grow. I actually like most the England team - Lingard is hopeless though and Sterling just runs with no end product at that level.

I get it, but I feel it's an excuse to be honest.

I'm over the I hate England because they're England thing but I agree for some people its an excuse.

I think he did. But again that's the media - England's biggest rival.

Southgate done well this tournament to mitigate it though. But it's so hard for the English players to just play. Maguire was made into some goal scoring super star with a ball magnet for a head after one goal - it's not fair on him.

A lot of praise for England in the world cup. They beat Tunisia, Panama and Sweden. Got beat by Belgium B team and Croatia. Not really much to brag about. Their midfield is weak and seriously lacking creativity. Not bad at the back for the most part but make some real blunders. Up front Kane has quality and noone else steps up when he's havin a quiet game.

In my opinion they did not exceed expectations. Should have beat Croatia.

Disagree. Argentina were very poor this world cup and were there for the taking. Croatia are a competent team but certainly not what people are making out. First real challenge for England against a side with a little quality and failed to go out and stamp authority on a game when they went 1 nil up. Poor

I do not think so but he is just not the same player without Eirksen's creativity.

Yeah but you are obliviously trolling all the England fans on here on what must be a pretty sore time for them.

Show some manners you are a shame to our nation.

If Kane had scored that sitter in the first half England would be on the way to the final.

Look on the bright side though. Complete hammering by France avoided.

Sorry i'm writing rubbish, actually quite upset, it helps lessen the pain. Couldnt see them beating France but after going 1 0 up over Croatia they should have been able to get the job done, and are unlikely to have a better chance than this tournament. Everything fell into their lap.

Back in 1990 we had a much better team, and with the opposition this lot have had to face they would have easily made the final.

Hard luck, it probably was their last chance. England were almost like Iceland in the Euros, massively overachieving.

No excuse for all the garbage you've scribbled in the last half hour. Thought you had your head on, tbh. Just another internet troll.
