Best Huddersfield players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

Huddersfield Town made a mockery of the doom-mongering pre-season predictions to avoid relegation in their debut Premier League campaign.

The Terriers, who were odds-on with the bookmakers to make an instant return to the Championship before a ball was kicked, only fell into the drop zone once in the entire season and finished four points ahead of 18th-placed Swansea City.

Town’s squad was among the cheapest in Fantasy Premier League last season, with not a single player having a starting price of more than £6.0m. The same is true for the coming campaign, with striker Steve Mounie the most expensive asset in David Wagner’s squad.

Jonas Lossl, Christopher Schindler and Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen broke the 100-point barrier in FPL last season and all three have been priced up at £4.5m again this time after their value-for-money performances in 2017/18. Midfielder Aaron Mooy, Town’s highest-scoring outfield player in FPL last season, is also a non-mover at £5.5m.

Only the sides who finished in the top seven kept more clean sheets than Huddersfield (ten) last season, though the Terriers’ concerning form in the second half of 2017/18 – in which they won just three of their final 20 matches and recorded as many shut-outs – is worth noting to Fantasy managers ahead of the coming season.

In-depth data on Huddersfield’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the salient statistics in the article below.

Would prefer a DDG and Coleman combo to a pickford and Valencia one, Alonso is one to avoid now that Conte's gone - we don't know how it will affect his output, there are better picks than Lingard, Arnie has tough fixtures. Neves is a waste of 0.5m.

I read that Chelsea's new manager prefers to play 4-4-2, so Alonso probably won't be that effective as a FPL asset.

    First draft..

    Ederson
    Coleman, Daniels, Robertson, Smalling
    Walcott, Salah, David Silva
    Firmino, Zaha, Aguero

    Subs - no good subs

Gameweek 3 use 2 free transfers to:
    Transfer out Smalling+Walcott
    Transfer in Bellerin+Miki

I don't particularly, I was asking Le Flem if he did since his comment suggested that.

It would make sense to any of us to keep the back 4 but this is Pep. The guy who seems to love changing things up. If he felt that system was his ideal system and spent all that money on Mendy for it then I don't see why he wouldn't go back. He strikes me as the type who would.

Either way pre season will show us the preferred system since even with first team players not available he'll likely set them up as he means to go on.

What do people think of this draft:

Keepers: Gunn/Foster - Watford and Southampton rotate well for a FRD of 23 for the 1st 10wks
Defenders: Robbo, Azpi - Jag/Tomkins/Daniels - Everton/Palace/Bournemouth rotation based on best fixture
Mids: Salah, Sane, Jota, Cairney, Masuaku
    FWDs: Aguero, Zaha, Tosun

1.5m ITB. Obviously the 4th midfielder needs upgrading, do I remove Jota for Mkhi/Rambo or do I move Cairney to a 6.5 like Walcott, though I dont really want to double up on Everton.

    Thanks.

He’s very high on my watchlist. Not as “good” as Auba in a footballing sense, but he’s much greedier, and took penalties from Auba last year. He just exists to score goals whereas Auba has more to his game.

If they were the same price it would be Auba, no question, but at 1.5 cheaper I think he could be gold & could actually keep pace with Auba’s Scores.

The big IF is minutes, how many will he get?

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

Not sure where this 'greedy' meme came from. The narrative for the first half of the season was that he worked too hard for the team, and lacked the desire take goal-scoring responsibility.

I watched a good few arsenal games last year as an early Ramsey owner and later as an Auba owner & have abiding memories of Laca so many times shooting when those two were better positioned, plus the penalty he took away from Auba towards end of the season. He is quite greedy, which is in his favour for any FPL owners

          1. Deulofail
            • 8 Years
            5 years, 9 months ago

Hmmm you could easilty paint it the other way around. Wenger came out in praise of Auba for letting Lacazette take the penalty, which suggests Auba was the set penalty taker. Lacazette hadn't set the league on fire since coming in, unlike Aubameyang who was relatively new, and was keen to take the next step in being a fan-favourite, being geberous. After all it's not him that needed confidence in general or for the EL. Any perceieved selfishness from Laca could have be spawned from the same idea, the whole team trying to get him to score so they could be an attacking force in Europe and have him firing in the following season. Let's not forget he was dropped outright for Auba even before Europa rotation. You can spin it either way, but I think "Laca is selfish" is a huge overstatement 🙂

Yeah there is always the danger of bias & rose tinted spectacles, but I was genuinely infuriated by him on several occasions taking on shots he shouldn’t have when Ramsey or Auba were in better positions.

It wasn’t just once or twice either it was several times, it probably wouldn’t have been as clear in my memory only I owned Ramsey at the time early in the season and later Auba for the last few games.

At the time I remember thinking, yep greedy striker, a good attribute if you were a Laca owner for FPL success

If he plays as the central striker in a 4231/433 - which are emery's preferred formations - he'll be my pick of Auba for value. That 1.5 could be the difference between a lukaku or kane,

Then use that 5-6m (!) to upgrade Quaner to one of those aforementioned 6-7 strikers, and you still have around 2.0m ITB which you can either use to upgrade Deulofeu to (Mkhi, Ramsey, Lingard, Martial, Milivojevic), or keep ITB to help with cleaning up the mess we’ll all inevitably be in after GW1 🙂

Love the Coleman & PVA picks by the way, very high on my watchlist.

I think he’s got a good chance. Mourinho can’t ignore his talent (I know he’s already done it with Salah, KDB and Kaku earlier in their careers) but Martial is a genuinely terrifying forward for defences to play against when he’s got the wind in his sails.

It's clear he isn't a fan. And when he's not a fan, it doesn't matter how good you are.

He needs to be professional youth, whether he’s a fan or not, if Martial starting makes the team better Mourinho has to play him. So it’s up to Martial to convince him. He could do that with a stinking preseason where Jose can’t not play him. Lots of ifs & buts but I do think he’s got a punchers chance of starting GW1.

And if he starts he could easily score or brace, imagine the bandwagon if he does it’ll be a monster.

This. It’s a punt with high upside & not a massive downside (if we can just get those teamsheets 5 mins earlier !! )

Exactly - very easy swap to Ramsey, Mkhi, Siggy, Theo, Milivojevic, Lingard - it’s more about the “slot” than the player.

But as I say, really hoping we can get teamsheets because I don’t want Martial in my team if he’s not starting GW1, I’d nearly hedge & go with Mili if we can’t get the teamsheets

If we lose Martial I can totally see it, otherwise I reckon Mourinho sticks to his current squad.

With Fred signing i'm expecting Mourinho to predominantly use a 4-3-3 as opposed to his 4-2-3-1 last season. As well as the starters below there is Mata, Rashford & Martial to compete in the front three and McTominay, Fellaini & Herrera for the midfield three.

            Matic;
            Fred, Pogba;
            Lingard, Lukaku, Alexis.

I reckon teams will adapt to their style. Eventually happened to Barca. Will look to Liverpool’s countering style. Won’t be so dominant I think, though will probably still win it.

I'd agree with that, certainly think we can improve on last season points wise but with Mourinho in charge it will always be difficult. He is acting like he has completely rebuilt the side when Young/Valencia are still the starting full-backs and he's given Fellaini a bumper new deal. Just stinking up the joint man, other managers would kill for the sort of talent we have.

He’s in my GW1 7.5 midfield starting slot

I think we will hopefully have Utd teamsheets just before the deadline as the game is at 20:00 Friday night, so can swap him out at the last minute if he is benched.

But Mourinho better bloody play him, he could be their secret weapon this year. Or not so secret depending on how you look at it.

Almost certainly going to take the punt. His set-piece delivery is superb and he's a genuine wing-back doing genuine attacking and Wolves are going to be a top-half team. Fiver says he scores more than Alonso by the season's end.

I think Going with all of Ramsey, Sessegnon, Jota is asking for trouble... it could obviously work out great and you should go with your gut.

But I’d be more comfortable with a KDB alongside Salah, a Firmino instead of Kun, and a 4.5 instead of either Alonso or Mendy.

Also am not keen onDDG at that price as I just can’t see him outscoring the 4.5’s by 25% to justify his 6.0 vs their 4.5’s, but again, it could work out really well for you.

Overall you have shoehorned in about 6 super players though which is good, and Zaha/Arnie to back them up so you could go really well with this

How's this as a first attempt:

    Foster - Boruc
    Robertson - Coleman - Bailly (if nailed) - Cedric - Wan-Bissaka
    Salah - Mkhi - Mahrez - Jota - Cairney
