Croatia Fantasy differentials end England’s World Cup dream

A trio of Croatian differentials were the Fantasy winners on Wednesday night as they emerged victorious from a World Cup semi-final with England.

None of those involved in Croatia’s goals had more than six percent ownership, while the highly-owned Three Lions options were left disappointed.

We’ve got all the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from match 62 of this World Cup.

ENGLAND 1-2 CROATIA

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS:

  • Ivan Perisic (£8.5m) – 9 points
  • Kieran Trippier (£5.5m) – 7 points
  • Mario Mandzukic (£8.9m) – 5 points
  • Sime Vrsaljko (£5.5m) – 5 points

Ivan Perisic (£8.5m) was the stand-out Fantasy star on Wednesday as he scored and assisted in Croatia’s World Cup semi-final win.

He latched onto Sime Vrsaljko’s (£5.5m) 68th minute cross to level the match, and it was him whose header was converted by Mario Mandzukic (£8.9m) in extra-time.

Kieran Trippier (£5.5m) was the only England player to register Fantasy returns after he gave the Three Lions a fifth-minute lead with an excellent free-kick.

Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Raheem Sterling (£8.9m) both had chances to kill the game off in the first-half but they couldn’t convert.

Croatia managed the match expertly in the second-half and extra-time especially, asserting control in midfield and pegging England’s wide players back.

In extra-time John Stones (£5.9m) had a 99th minute header cleared off the line by Vrsaljko and Kane’s back-post headed chance went wide.

Despite the fact that England will meet Belgium in the third/fourth place play-off on Saturday, Kane and Jesse Lingard (£7.5m) are among the most sold players for the final Gameround.

101,000+ managers have removed Kane, who still leads the race for the Golden Boot while Lingard has been moved on by 67,000+.

Croatian talisman and penalty taker Luka Modric (£9.1m) has now risen to 51.2 percent ownership, while Dejan Lovren (£5.0m) remains in 24.6 percent of teams despite the fact he has not kept a clean sheet since Gameround 2.

ENGLAND XI (3-1-4-2): Pickford; Maguire, Stones, Walker (Vardy 112’); Henderson (Dier 97’); Young (Rose 90’), Alli, Lingard, Trippier; Sterling (Rashford 74’), Kane.

CROATIA XI (4-1-4-1): Subasic; Strinic (Pivaric 95’), Vida, Lovren, Vrsaljko; Brozovic; Perisic, Rakitic, Modric (Badelj 119’), Rebic (Kramaric 101’); Mandzukic (Corluka 115’).

      Thinking:
Hernandez mistimed volley bounces over Subasic for 1-0,
Pavard concedes a penalty after tripping Rebic on the edge of the box. Modric hits the post and Perisic slots home the rebound.
Substitute Dembele scores the winner in extra time, tapping in the rebound after Mbappe is denied by Subasic following a mazy run.

I do not know but i just hope the game reflects just how good this World Cup has been.

I hope Croatia win it as it would be nice to see a nation win it that has not done so before.

    Dejan Lovren last night:

Yeah lost in translation, what he means is,

'not only am I very lucky to be considered a professional footballer, I'm also lucky enough to be on the same club team as Salah, Firmino and Mane, who carried us to be the CL final, and luckily I got to play because the first choice defenders were injured, and I'm also lucky enough to have been born in a tiny country...that same tiny country that produced Modric, and Ratikic...so I just need to play them a simple 10 yard pass and watch them work their magic...whilst getting away with countless niggly fouls, because I'm not fast, or strong, or technically very good at football.'

I've got him in my team at the min. Do you mind RMT?

        Pickford (speroni)

        PVA Robertson Cedric Monreal (4.0)

        Siggy Salah Sanchez Ramsey (cairney)

        Tosun firmino (reid)

Bit concerned I've no city but like my team overall

It's good. If you need a City presence, an extra 0.5m for Ederson would do it; otherwise you could wait to see how Pep's going to deploy his forces in the early weeks. Unless you drop Sanchez you'll need 2FT to get a midfielder or striker in.

Cheers Andy. Was considerin sane but have a feelin Sanchez is gonna offer more in the early games and probably get more points. Aguero is the player for city I fear not having. Would mean downgrading Sanchez and upgrading firmino. Not sure if I fancy doing that. It's a tough call

You might as well get Stekelenburg as your 4.0m keeper, as he will play if Pickford gets injured.

Sanchez isn't good value for a player in his position playing for United.

          1. Lucackadoodledoo

            5 years, 8 months ago

            Agree on stekelenburg.

Sanchez is a punt. I've a feeling he'll have a much better season but can change him after a couple of weeks if he doesn't perform probably to Hazard after he's rested from WC.

You, like a lot of people I see picking teams here, have that caveat of 'once they return from the WC I'll bring them in'. Out of curiosity are you planning an early wildcard for WC players, or planning to take hits?

I am considering, only him and Martial will be available for striker/attacking mid positions until the England/Belgium/France players are back (assuming no signings). He could very easily play up front for as long as until the international break. Having said that I can’t get a team I like with him in it and it still feels a bit risky at that price after last season.

I need at least 2 of these 7 to play in the third place game,
    Kane
    Lingard
    Alli
    Maguire
    Trippier
    Courtois
    Lukaku

I don't think Trippier, Alli or Lingard will, hoping Kane and Lukaku both play as chasing the golden boot.

Based on world cup results so far:

What is your world cup team of the tournament?

Who do you think will win the Golden Ball?

What do you think is the goal of the tournament so far?

Who will win the 3rd place match and the final?

Mbappe is easily the favorite to win best young player award, so no point in asking about that

    1. HamezMace

Team - probably France, solid all over the pitch.
Golden ball - could easily be Mbappe too.
      Goal - Nacho for me.
3rd place - I'm going to say England, but 50-50 game.

      Mbappe

What do you think is the goal of the tournament so far?

Who will win the 3rd place match and the final?

      Belgium

My team of the tournament so far:
      Lloris
      Trippier - Varane - Maguire - Vrsalijko
      Modric - Kante - Coutinho
      Mbappe - Kane - Hazard
(I know Vrsalijko is actually a RB, but none of the LBs particularly impressed me this tournament and he and Trippier have been the best fullbacks of the tournament imo)

      Golden ball: Modric

goal of the tournament: Pavard's goal

Belgium and France to win the 3rd place match and the final respectively

New players coming from foreign leagues always take time to settle, but I agree I like him as a player, and having no players good enough to make their world cup squads isn't really a good sign?

                Ramsey wales
                Auba gabon
                Mkhi armenia
Bellerin and lacazette, managers don't like them
Torreira and xhaka good players for their average teams
                Leno, neur
They are not weak players at all
Only one I'm raging with is ozil who is sht

Bellerin and Lacazette the managers don't like because they didn't play very well last season.
Chambers and Holding should have progressed better - they are a similar age to Stones, and Maguire, but not as good.
Xhaka I don't think has done well in the PL, not disciplined, or positional very good.
                  Squad depth isn't good enough.
United and City have Rashford, Martial, B.Silva, Mahrez coming off the bench, Arsenal has Welbeck, and....? Maitland-Niles?

I dislike the idea of them intently. Especially with your GW1 team. Early on in the game we will be reacting to prices and performances, with planned transfers you lose that ability. Unless you are happy to start taking hits in GW2/3.

I have Kola, Mkhi and Auba atm. Attacking players i think can be played in those games. Yes bench Bellers for City but Chelsea are all over the shop and will only have had a couple of weeks under the new manager. I would be happy to play all against them. Remember, this is not an Wenger Arsenal any more, they have a manger who wants better than 4th.

Much as I'm opposed to the concept of planned transfers and have never employed such a technique, I do think this time with world cup returnees is a game changer. I will have first choice picks absent from my GW1 squad and will need to take a hit or 2 to get them in without reverting to an early WC..

Planning transfers = mistake, especially at this stage.

Once the season gets started you will have other things to take care of. Each transfer is basically worth 4 points - if you like Bellerin and Lacazette just get em

Very ignorant to call Croatia an "average team"
Modric and Rakitic are key starters for RM and Barca respectively
      Mandzukic often plays for Juventus
      Kovacic often plays for RM
      Vrsalijko starts for Atletico
      Perisic starts for Inter

So... Top of my ML by a miniscule 2 points for the WC (McDonalds)

This is what I've left myself with :-

    Subasic/Pickford
    Varane/Pavard/Meunier/Lovren/Macguire
    JLings/KDB/Modric/Chadli/Gazinsky*
    Griez/Perisic/Mbappe

I have 3.5ITB with 1FT left. Gazinsky is 4.3M but struggling to see a real option in mid for 7.8
Considering dropping Chadli (who may or may not play the playoff) for Pogba/rakitic?

    Thoughts?

Indeed. Had hedged my team (incorrectly) in Brazil favour amongst other things in previous rounds so was a mess so to speak. WildCard in my sky rocket would have been nice.
So I had a few non-players already that need cleaned up.

The one teamsheet you'll have just in advance is the playoff game.
The decisions will be committed before you get the Final ones.

Teamsheets as in the teamsheets of the teams for the play off.

The teams for the final will be largely predictable.

I just don’t see the point of doing transfers before Saturday 2pm.

They are making some really good signings, but how will they all fit in? You cant change 50% of the team and expect them to gel right away. Could be an issue, but they are quality.

    3x7 FWD`s.

    Fabianski - Foster
    Robertson - Coleman - Cedric - Tomkins - Daniels
    Salah - Sanchez - Sane - Siggy - Chalobah
    Zaha - Tosun - Arnautovic

    Pickford - Stek
    TAA - Mendy - Daniels - Tomkins - Peltier
