Croatia Fantasy differentials end England’s World Cup dream

A trio of Croatian differentials were the Fantasy winners on Wednesday night as they emerged victorious from a World Cup semi-final with England.

None of those involved in Croatia’s goals had more than six percent ownership, while the highly-owned Three Lions options were left disappointed.

We’ve got all the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from match 62 of this World Cup.

ENGLAND 1-2 CROATIA

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS:

  • Ivan Perisic (£8.5m) – 9 points
  • Kieran Trippier (£5.5m) – 7 points
  • Mario Mandzukic (£8.9m) – 5 points
  • Sime Vrsaljko (£5.5m) – 5 points

Ivan Perisic (£8.5m) was the stand-out Fantasy star on Wednesday as he scored and assisted in Croatia’s World Cup semi-final win.

He latched onto Sime Vrsaljko’s (£5.5m) 68th minute cross to level the match, and it was him whose header was converted by Mario Mandzukic (£8.9m) in extra-time.

Kieran Trippier (£5.5m) was the only England player to register Fantasy returns after he gave the Three Lions a fifth-minute lead with an excellent free-kick.

Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Raheem Sterling (£8.9m) both had chances to kill the game off in the first-half but they couldn’t convert.

Croatia managed the match expertly in the second-half and extra-time especially, asserting control in midfield and pegging England’s wide players back.

In extra-time John Stones (£5.9m) had a 99th minute header cleared off the line by Vrsaljko and Kane’s back-post headed chance went wide.

Despite the fact that England will meet Belgium in the third/fourth place play-off on Saturday, Kane and Jesse Lingard (£7.5m) are among the most sold players for the final Gameround.

101,000+ managers have removed Kane, who still leads the race for the Golden Boot while Lingard has been moved on by 67,000+.

Croatian talisman and penalty taker Luka Modric (£9.1m) has now risen to 51.2 percent ownership, while Dejan Lovren (£5.0m) remains in 24.6 percent of teams despite the fact he has not kept a clean sheet since Gameround 2.

ENGLAND XI (3-1-4-2): Pickford; Maguire, Stones, Walker (Vardy 112’); Henderson (Dier 97’); Young (Rose 90’), Alli, Lingard, Trippier; Sterling (Rashford 74’), Kane.

CROATIA XI (4-1-4-1): Subasic; Strinic (Pivaric 95’), Vida, Lovren, Vrsaljko; Brozovic; Perisic, Rakitic, Modric (Badelj 119’), Rebic (Kramaric 101’); Mandzukic (Corluka 115’).

They really threw it away in that semi-final they had it in the bag.
Southgate just needed to do a 'big Sam' on it an shore up midfield.
Pity I think France England would have been interesting as a Neutral.
I think France will hammer Croatia now.

        Overachieved.

They switched off at the key moments.
Terrible defending for both goals conceded.
In the second half they could barely string 3 passes together.

Anyone who says fantasy football is not mostly about luck is lying.
Most of these fellas who claim to be experts are talking through thier hats!
I started off terribly in the world cup fantasy football I had none of the hatrick fellas/big scorers at the beginning.

Used my bench boost round 1 in the bad start

    https://i.imgur.com/ar01YcR.png

Had a terrible wildcard round 3 and also wasted Max Chip (had it on Suarez at the start anyway)

    https://i.imgur.com/lGhbYgs.png

I was going to give up.
Then with whole new team going into knockouts fortunately I backed Sweden meant I did not have to take any hits at all.
I got even more jammy when captaining Varane in the quarter finals.

    https://i.imgur.com/PILASWI.png

Then in the semi-finals I captained Trippier for his first England goal

    https://i.imgur.com/i6rL7iH.png

Not only that I got 9 points off Perisic who I only got after the group stages because I thought he was value/hardworking.

The game is a lot about luck and good starts.
I just hope I have not used up all mine for the fpl game.

Repeatedly finishing in high positions indicates it's not all luck.

Of course there is an element of luck and that is amplified in a short game like this.

I suppose so I would be interested to know those people who do repeatedly well do they normally start well.
Or is it they just make thier ground up later on when people lose interest?

I’ve had a few good finishes but don’t usually start well, I generally work better when there’s more information to go on. There’s definitely an element of luck involved but good judgement and forward planning also go a long way.

It's about long term probabilities, if you make mostly good decisions over 38 weeks you'll finish near the top.

I don't think it matters whether you finish strong or start strong, though personally I try to maintain a decent rank until the last few weeks and then make some last minute gains in rank.

Skill vs luck in fantasy is always up for debate because it’s a mixture of both so there’s plenty to back up whatever point of view you take. Having said that luck plays much more of a part in the WC fantasy due to only a handful of games with a dwindling number in the player pool so teams end up very similar, in this format the only way to do very well was to start strong and with almost all high ceiling players classified as forwards and there only being 3 spots that was luck, Ronaldo could have easily had the WC Lewandowski did and vice versa

Fantasy Football is similar to poker in that you won't do well long term through pure luck and all the skill and analytical ability in the world won't guarantee success. Better players making better decisions give themselves a greater chance of succeeding but there is still a large element of chance.

By definition if you repeat something it is not luck. If you consistently do well in FPL it is therefore not luck.

GW1 team is almost irrelevant - many teams finish high even after a 2.6m GW OR for e.g. -it's what you do after that, that counts. Luck plays a part for sure, just like in real sport - but cream always rises regardless.......

Keane could actually be a solid pick.. the only thing is for a measly 0.5 more you get all his points plus coleman’s Attacking returns...

I think Coleman could have a big year, just can’t for him in currently. Could be a big reason for playing a back 5 though as if he hits form he returns like an attacking mid

Jota & Cairney could be 2-2-2-2-2-2 players... with Salah will you ever Kaptain Kun?

I would move Kun down to Morata, Giroud, Arnie, King or Austin and go for a different mid over Jota, maybe Siggy, Martial, Lingard, Theo, Milivojevic, Mkhi or Ramsey.

In saying that Cairney (along with Ralls at Cardiff) could both be under the radar 5.0 options with their set pieces & nailedness... I just don’t want to be banking on them from GW1!

Beating my best rank. Aiming for top 1k. Making better decisions on which players to pick than most people.

Way to make a big rank jump... Wait until you think the community and Scoutcast-led hivemind has got something badly wrong and boldly go the opposite way. I had a SHOCKING start last season before the consensus went strongly towards ignoring the mini double game week for West Ham and Spurs. That wildcard was huge for me and my rank plummeted over the next 5 weeks.

True. Thats why i need a good start.

Two years ago i started well and finished top 4k. I was never lower than 200k all season.

Last year started 3 million. Wildcarded early. Lost 50 points on my wildcard. Got laughed at on the scoutcast. Crawled my way to 70k after being 1 million at christmas. Put in even more effort than the year before. Just took to long to recover. Blowing my wildcard was my biggest mistake

Get off to a good start.
      Dont blow my wildcard early.
Save transfers as often as possible.
      Dont take unnecessary hits.
      Trust my instincts
      Be patient
      Play my own game.
      Use 4 5 1 and not 3 4 3

Setting a formation now probably isn't the best idea, if big hitting forwards start well and you're set on 451 you will miss out.

4 5 1 is definitely risky. Your point is noted and i wouldnt advocate everyone doing it. If it goes wrong it will force me into an early wildcard. But my old school motto was "reward to the brave" so giving it a go

For some reason I just can't settle with bigger hitters in midfield so far. My long term plan is to move some of the money in the def to the middle once the best bargain/enabler and upper priced players show themselves.

I ended up doing the opposite initially. My mid was rammed and I didn't want to budge.
Rest of the team suffered though and I had to rip it up and start again.

What mids you looking to be on from day 1? I'm tempted to drop Auba down and upgrade a mid till GW3 then make a call on Aguero and whoever the upgraded mid is to bring him back in.

Eriksen tempts me but with a lack of his supporting cast due to WC I'm reluctant at that price.

              Salah, Eriksen, Walcott/Mkhi/ Deu/ Costa

Keeping an eye on how the pre-Season goes at Everton.
I may go Tosun from start. I like Arsenal GW3 onwards

Strong midfield. It's just hard this year but I think I'm going to end up having to choose between Walcott and Jota.

I'm a big fan of Arsenal from GW3 onwards. Depending on who Chelsea bring in I may drop Auba for the first couple.

I'm hoping Niasse is more Silva's type than a target man like Tosun and he becomes a very viable budget option for the opening fixtures to free up some cash!

Lot of pre-season games to be played that will ultimately change my mind.

Agreed. I think its mainly just a case of getting a template of how you want your team and switching about as pre season dictates at this stage.

how nailed are Mendy & Jones? Bit of $$$ tied up in your defence imo?

Not sure about Jones but he's a place holder for a united def once it becomes clearer in pre season. Mendy I would be happy to hold the first game week even if he doesn't play so that I have him for those other easy games. Sounds like he will be as nailed as any city player based on reports and analysis.

My long term plan is to move some of the money in the def to the middle once the best bargain/enabler and upper priced players show themselves.

WC squad players will still be questionable for the first few weeks, even thoug Mendy and Jones have played little to nothing in the WC they will still need to rest, they will probably both be out at least the first 2 weeks

They will no doubt get 2/3 weeks rest so I guess it is a risk.

Mendy I would be happy to hold the first game week or two even if he doesn't play so that I have him for those other easy games.

Jones I can easily change based on who starts in pre season with bailly/lindelof.

Walcott and Jota will sort themselves out after the first few GWs once the best options show themselves.

Fair comment. I just thought McCarthy did little wrong at the end of last season. Maybe the uncertainty is great enough to avoid to start the season.

I'm a Southampton fan and I would beg to disagree, McCarthy was our saviour securing our status in the premier league so he deserves to start. Gunn will get his opportunity, so I'd only pick a Southampton GK if you are willing to pick both.

    Morning all,

    Thoughts on this team?

    Ederson

    Coleman, Douglas, Cedric

    Salah, Sane, Mkhi, Cairney

    Auba , Tosun, Firmino

    Button, Tomkins, Hughes, Schletto

    Ederson
    Coleman Alonso Robertson Bellerin
    Silva Mane Sane Salah Jota
    Zaha

    Subs: Boruc, Cedric, Quaner, Madine

I think it looks really good, Bellerin is one I would swap out until we get a sense of how Arsenal will do this season, also if you want to get a premium striker you may need a lot of surgery to afford Kane, Auba etc

Defence and midfield is lovely, but with the obvious sacrifice of forward line being weak.

Personally I wouldn't go with a forward line that weak as it leaves you a bit stuck on how to react if some of the big guns start firing.

I'd probably at least one of downgrade silva / Mane to then allow forward upgrade of at least one.

Downground Bellerin and one of the midfielders so you can get a top heavy striker

Are the likes of Coleman and PVA worth the extra million outlay over the 4.5 'bargains' such as Tomkins, Cedric and Daniels?

Be interesting to see what people think on this as 5.5 is an intriguing price point for defenders.
