How Foster and Watford can form part of defensive rotation in 2018/19

Ben Foster could help Watford form part of an effective defensive rotation this season after his move from West Bromwich Albion.

The data would suggest he stands to bring improvements to the Hornets’ back-line, compared to previous number one Heurelho Gomes.

We’ve run the rule over Foster to see what his Fantasy Premier League prospects are this season.

THE HISTORY

Ben Foster finally called time on a six-year spell at West Bromwich Albion this summer after the Baggies were relegated from the Premier League. Having proved a fashionable asset for Fantasy football in recent years, his popularity was damaged last season by the struggles of his club, who finished bottom of the league.

However, the 123 FPL points Foster amassed in 2017/18 turned out to be the third-best score of his career. In fact, the ten clean sheets he helped keep was his second highest tally in the Premier League; only in 2014/15 did he register more shut-outs. The 101 saves he registered was also in keeping with expectations.

The main blot statistically on his final season with West Brom was the fact that he ranked bottom of the division for expected goals prevented, with -8.80.

Foster’s FPL pedigree goes back a long way, though. He first made a name for himself by making 178 saves and recording 153 Fantasy points in 2010/11 with Birmingham City.

Since then he has made over 100 saves in five of the last eight campaigns and was only below that number between 2013/14 and 2016/17 as he struggled with injury and team selection.

PROSPECTS

Foster certainly has what it takes to better Heurelho Gomes (£4.5m) in the Watford net and help the Hornets be a source of more clean sheets in 2018/19 than they were last season.

There is a decent foundation in place already at Vicarage Road as manager Javi Gracia targeted defence as an area in need of improvement after he took over from Marco Silva in January.

In the first 24 Gameweeks of 2017/18 Watford ranked 18th in the division for clean sheets and only Stoke City (50) had conceded more goals than them (44).

Between Gracia’s first match in Gameweek 25 and the end of the campaign the Hornets were ninth-best for clean sheets and 12th for goals conceded. In fact, only Man City (75) and Liverpool (97) allowed fewer shots on goal than Watford (130) over that same period.

They also ranked fifth-best for shots on target allowed (49) and seventh for big chances conceded (27).

If Watford begin 2018/19 in similar form then Foster is likely to perform better than Gomes.

The Brazilian only played one match under Gracia because of injury, but loanee Orestis Karnezis is no longer at the club and therefore unavailable for comparison.

Gomes’ spell in the team was under Silva, when Watford weren’t as assured at the back. Crucially, despite facing more shots on target per game last season, he still made fewer saves than Foster did per match.

The former West Brom man also out-performed Gomes for goals conceded per game as well as clean sheets too.

With that in mind, the hope is that Watford may be the source of more clean sheets in 2018/19 than they were last season.

The Hornets do have some tricky fixtures early on, with Tottenham and Manchester United among their first six matches.

However, Foster could be rotated with fellow £4.5m goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to give managers this run over the first six Gameweeks: Brighton (H), Bournemouth (H), Crystal Palace (H), Wolves (H), Everton (A), Fulham (A).

This is my team and I’m looking at

PVA + Douglas to Mendy + Cedric

    Ward
    PVA Robertson Douglas Coleman
    Mkhi Salah Jota
    Aubameyang Aguero Zaha

    Subs: Fab Kennedy Masuaku Bennet

Could also do Salah and Zaha to Sanchez and Firmino. So many options! Any feed back would be lovely guys thank you

    The Wolves Wingbacks interest me.

    5.0m Douglas (38 starts, 5 goals, 14 assists)
    4.5m Doherty (45 starts, 4 goals, 4 assists)

Doherty got an assist in their first pre-season game, Douglas blanked. It's probably just pre-season trolling us 😀

Are you buying one? And if so, which one?

Certainly would not go near a 5m

The big kicker is in the championship the team were on the front foot which is great for wing backs. In the premier league it will be backs against the wall. I would say avoid

Do you think you will continue to attack teams in the Premier League, similar to what Bournemouth did? Daniels maintained his assist rate when he jumped leagues as a result.

Definitely going for Douglas - looks like fun.

The manager has a reputation for defensive stability and he now has a 6 foot 5 forward to aim for.....

      On set-pieces too.

Douglas had crazy numbers in the championship. Unfortunately he has stiff competition in the attacking defender category...

Coleman, Baines, PVA, Robertson, VVD, Mendy, Alonso, Azpi, even Bellerin & Monreal are technically quite attacking... Bavies, Trippier, Rose, Aurier, Valencia, Young...

The list just goes on and on forever

He could definitely be a smash hit player this year... but I think it’s easier to start with one of the bigger hitters and move down to Dougghlas if it looks like he’s the real deal... it can be more difficult to go the opposite direction.

But he’s a solid, solid pick for GW1 with lots going for him, no doubt

Would you need to go the other way? You could start with Douglas, give him a couple of games, if he don't cut it he's an easy swap to TAA who should be ready to go by then.

You’re very exposed to Wolves conceding a goal and not scoring a goal... both of which are potentially likely given they’re coming up from champs.

In saying that I’m currently on Patricio in goal too as he looks good value.

I think Kun + Auba is overkill when you have Salah, but again it could work out extremely well.

For those planning to Wildcard early could Burnley assets potentially be better due to having more match sharpness because of Europa games?

Maybe they'll have a good start then as the season goes on the extra games cause more tired legs.

A positive of Sanchez atleast is that he can act as a cash store and can be easily downgraded to swap
Sanchez+cheap striker (eg Tosun) > Aguero/Auba + cheap mid (eg Jota)

No contingency, thats only 1 game.

With Salah, he has been injured, played in World Cup while not fully fit, no guarantee he will be ready to start the season.

Only Shearer, Van Persie and Kane have finished top scorers in consecutive years. He is good but not there yet. imo

They relied heavily on loan players last season, the regular centre-back (Kalas), left-back (Targett) and centre-forward (Mitrovic) in the second half of last season were all loaned in and have now gone back, plus the regular right-back (Fredericks) signed for West Ham. Prior to Mitrovic's arrival in January, Ayite, Fonte (both listed as mids) and Kamara were all used up front.

Are people overlooking Bamba as an option?

4.5m Cardiff defender, 6ft 2, threat at corners, Cardiff - good opening fixtures, well organised side who know their limitations and rely mainly on set pieces.

Cardiff are built around being solid defensively and had the joint best defence last year, they might struggle long term but potentially keep a few clean sheets early doors.

Sol Bamba is one of Warnock's key men with Warnock being quoted to say he's better than Van Dijk! 😉

With a deep compact defence, I'd be interested in their keeper. Should be faced with a lot of low %ge shots, so rack up the save points. Do you know which one is nailed? Both 4.5m.

Not sure about Bamba. Do you think he could be the Hegazi (6ft 4) of this season?

Was also considering their keeper, haven't actually researched their keepers yet.

Reckon he could be you know, its hard to tell but he's got briliant CBI stats, off the top of my head (may be wrong) he had a total of 140 CBIs compared to his partner Morrision (5.0) who got 40.

        Should be a bonus magnet.

Cardiff defenders pass completion were sub-60% in the Championship so they won't be picking up much BPS for that which means the keeper should be well placed to pick up bonus. Burnley's passing rate has been around 70% over the last two seasons and this has helped Heaton and Pope become good options, whether Cardiff can keep the clean sheets is the big problem but with save points to fall back on I'd much prefer the keeper (if we knew who was first choice) over a defender.

Bloody nice team structure. Love the 2 mid slots for Mkhi/Jota and 2 forward slots for a Arnie/Tosun.

I don’t like Jota as a pick but he can be swapped to Mili or Theo if needed. Same with Mkhi, although if you could squeeze 0.5 ITB it also allows you to move to Siggy, Rambo or Martial if thy happen to bandwagon.

Same with Arnie as a GW1 pick, I wouldn’t be getting him for GW1 but he allows you get Zaha, Austin, King, Wood if needed. Same with Tosun.

I’d prefer a little bit more Liverpool attacker than Arsenal attack for GW1 so would def I Italy look at Auba>Firmino, but Auba could easily brace v city.

Classic defence too with a 6.5 & 6.0 slot again gives you every option under the sun, and two great players for GW1 currently in them, along with he 4.5’s for backup

Don't like having both cairney and hughes but the rest of the team is looking great. I'd spend the extra 0.5 to upgrade hughes to deulofeu.

I actually downgraded from Deulofeu to Hughes to get that 0.5. Not entirely sure that Deulofeu is nailed, and coming off of the WC I want a fully nailed team for early advantage. Hence why all of these picks are very likely to start first couple of matches. Planning early WC

I am currently looking at maverick 4.5 midfielder picks. Abdelhamid Sabiri may be one to watch in pre season. Was signed last season by Huddersfield from Nurnburg as a young prospect (where he scored an impressive 5 goals in 9 games). Only played 5 games for Huddersfield last season but he was only 20. Hes now more settled and a year older, and got off to a great start at pre season yesterday where he scored in Huddersfield's 4 0 win. One to watch.

I am honestly so excited to put Mahrez in my fantasy team.

I think he’s going to be really successful at City. They play slick, intricate football and the supply line into him will be so much better than at Leicester.

I think his goal/assist tally will dramatically improve.

He is so much more clinical in front of goal than Sterling.

    Straight in my team.
