How Foster and Watford can form part of defensive rotation in 2018/19

Ben Foster could help Watford form part of an effective defensive rotation this season after his move from West Bromwich Albion.

The data would suggest he stands to bring improvements to the Hornets’ back-line, compared to previous number one Heurelho Gomes.

We’ve run the rule over Foster to see what his Fantasy Premier League prospects are this season.

THE HISTORY

Ben Foster finally called time on a six-year spell at West Bromwich Albion this summer after the Baggies were relegated from the Premier League. Having proved a fashionable asset for Fantasy football in recent years, his popularity was damaged last season by the struggles of his club, who finished bottom of the league.

However, the 123 FPL points Foster amassed in 2017/18 turned out to be the third-best score of his career. In fact, the ten clean sheets he helped keep was his second highest tally in the Premier League; only in 2014/15 did he register more shut-outs. The 101 saves he registered was also in keeping with expectations.

The main blot statistically on his final season with West Brom was the fact that he ranked bottom of the division for expected goals prevented, with -8.80.

Foster’s FPL pedigree goes back a long way, though. He first made a name for himself by making 178 saves and recording 153 Fantasy points in 2010/11 with Birmingham City.

Since then he has made over 100 saves in five of the last eight campaigns and was only below that number between 2013/14 and 2016/17 as he struggled with injury and team selection.

PROSPECTS

Foster certainly has what it takes to better Heurelho Gomes (£4.5m) in the Watford net and help the Hornets be a source of more clean sheets in 2018/19 than they were last season.

There is a decent foundation in place already at Vicarage Road as manager Javi Gracia targeted defence as an area in need of improvement after he took over from Marco Silva in January.

In the first 24 Gameweeks of 2017/18 Watford ranked 18th in the division for clean sheets and only Stoke City (50) had conceded more goals than them (44).

Between Gracia’s first match in Gameweek 25 and the end of the campaign the Hornets were ninth-best for clean sheets and 12th for goals conceded. In fact, only Man City (75) and Liverpool (97) allowed fewer shots on goal than Watford (130) over that same period.

They also ranked fifth-best for shots on target allowed (49) and seventh for big chances conceded (27).

If Watford begin 2018/19 in similar form then Foster is likely to perform better than Gomes.

The Brazilian only played one match under Gracia because of injury, but loanee Orestis Karnezis is no longer at the club and therefore unavailable for comparison.

Gomes’ spell in the team was under Silva, when Watford weren’t as assured at the back. Crucially, despite facing more shots on target per game last season, he still made fewer saves than Foster did per match.

The former West Brom man also out-performed Gomes for goals conceded per game as well as clean sheets too.

With that in mind, the hope is that Watford may be the source of more clean sheets in 2018/19 than they were last season.

The Hornets do have some tricky fixtures early on, with Tottenham and Manchester United among their first six matches.

However, Foster could be rotated with fellow £4.5m goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to give managers this run over the first six Gameweeks: Brighton (H), Bournemouth (H), Crystal Palace (H), Wolves (H), Everton (A), Fulham (A).

      Think that's genuinely tough.

Instinct it Salah after an incredible season but Kane has done it for a good few seasons now and generally in draft strikers are few and far between

Auba great PPM last year and fully rested

I'm swaying towards Auba but I'm wondering in a 10-man draft, is there a chance of auba being second round pick?!

Just gotta be happy with a Newcastle player on the bench for 4 of the first 5 gameweeks, and 4-7 of the first 7 gameweeks. You wouldn't want to wate money on the bench, but then you wouldn't want to plan to start a cheap, rubbish option in your XI, either.

      So who is worthy?

Why does everyone want to spend their full budget at the start? I'm becoming more resigned to the thought of having an extra 1-2M left in the bank. There are several good mid-priced mids and forwards that have great fixtures in the first several weeks on paper that could pan out. Siggy, Walcott, Lamela, Mhiki, Mili, a couple Wolves players, zaha, austin, Everton strikers, and so on.

I see a lot of comments along the lines of "you don't want to miss out when they go off" when teams have fewer of the 'premium' players. Well duh, but what's the difference between not picking a premium player or picking the wrong one?

I currently have 1.5 ITB with Salah and Sane as my only 'premium' attackers , one 4.5 bench fodder forward, and the rest potential value picks.

IDK, it seems more logical to me at the moment.

Usually spend my whole budget because I belieeeve in my teaeeem, and don't want to disadvantage myself for 1-2 gameweeks.

This is decent. Quite a few teams have nice sets of opening fixtures in terms of avoiding the big six teams.

        Inside the first 8 GWs...

Bournemouth only face che in GW4.
Palace only face LIV in GW2.
Southampton only face liv in GW6 & CHE in GW8.
Wolves only face MCI in GW3 & mun in GW6.

If you can rotate around these games at least you have some kind of opportunity for a clean sheet.

the teams are actually , West Ham, Brighton,Sothampton, Palace, (Daniels was in consideration too)the goalies i have are Wolves and Watford ,

but yeah the plan was to have as many teams as possible represented in the cheap defense so i can just play whoever has the easiest looking fixture and eek out clean sheets here and there with maybe an odd goal or assist thrown in too 🙂

    McCarthy | Fabianski
    Azpi | Robertson | Cedric | Daniels | Diop
    Salah | DSilva | Walcott
    Aguero | Firmino | Tosun

    Headaches include:
3 Liverpool players and no Ward & 0.5 off DSilva > Mahrez... Thoughts?

wouldn't worry about Mahrez until you know exactly where he will fit into the City line up I,e, pitch time.

Thoughts on this midfield peeps pls?

    Salah, Ramsey, D.Silva, Gudmundsson*, Cairney*

thinking I could rotate between Guddy & Cairney.

all feedback appreciated, good or bad lol.

    Cheers

Good price structure, I like starting with Ramsey. Like Cairney too.

I was big on Gudmundsson last season but not sure he'll be worth it at 6m. Not sure about Silva but whoever gets minutes for City will do well; at least he'll be a bit fresher than Sterling and KDB.

If you're looking at a Burnley mid, keep an eye on how Robbie Brady does in pre-season. He's coming of a fairly lengthy injury lay-off but prior to that he was Burnley's main creative outlet and is 0.5 cheaper than Gudmundsson.
D Silva is a bit of a rotation risk but then again they all are at City, I'm coming round to thinking he might be the best City attacker to own given that he is the cheapest which allows you a better bench player when he does miss out.

Thanks for the feedback above lads. Definitely unsure of Guddy right now but his stats from last season where pretty good so keeping him as an option so far. I'll keep an eye on how Brady goes PS and make a decision on him closer to the start of the PL. D.Silva will prob start at least the first 3 seeing KDB and Stirling are both coming off a lengthy WC spell so he or Sane' are the best options I think, maybe even Mahrez? Think Ramswey will have a good season even thoughthe gunners have 2 hard fixtures first up. Cairney is an unkown factor for me but he seems to be the best option for that price.

        Cheers

Pretty sure I'm starting Salahless but did a big rework tonight, still working out how to approach City but don't think I want to spend the money as secure as Ederson is.

    Pickford, Guaita
    Robertson, Janmaat, Tomkins, Hoedt, Boly
    Mane, Mahrez, Ramsey, Cavaleiro, Cairney
    Aubameyang, Aguero, Zaha

    0.5m in the bank

Your defence is suffering as you have gone heavy up top with 3 mid to premium Mids. Other than that a good team

Yeah. Janmaat a punt at the moment although I have the money to go Bellerin instead. Feel like between Tomkins, Hoedt, and Boly I should be sorted to play 3 or 4 at the back if I make the right calls.

When going Salahless I feel like it's worth the weak defence to have Auba and Aguero, both serious captaincy options with their fixtures and goalscoring ability.

This is true, Janmaat is a good punt, I was considering Will Hughes of watford in midfield could be a bargain at 5m if he plays to his ability

Thoughts on the team. Going without Salah.

    Pickford
    Coleman Mee Tomkins
    D.Silva Mane Sane Walcott
    Aguero Firmino Zaha

    Foster Douglas Cedric Westwood

    0 ITB

    Any suggestions welcome

Nice. Think Pickford and Coleman is a bit much, not sure Coleman will have the same attacking production. Personally I'm too fed up with Walcott but at least he's the right price now.

      Good forward line.

If i could find 0.5m from my team id upgrade to Sigurdsson

Siggy more than worth it if he can recover Swansea form. If he forms a partnership with Tosun like he did with Llorente it could happen. Walcott a decent punt at the price but I've not had a good time with him the last few seasons.

Not sure about the Eve triple up especially the defensive double up. Otherwise I like the other picks
