Set-piece and penalty takers for final World Cup Fantasy matches

We are left with the same four teams for the final round of World Cup Fantasy matches, with two more fixtures making up Gameround 7.

That includes the third/fourth place play-off that Belgium and England will play in on Saturday.

So, for one last time, we’ve collated all the relevant set-piece data so Fantasy Football Scout members can work out which nations are the best to focus on for their transfers.

It still looks like England are the most likely to score from set-piece situations despite their exit from the tournament, while Croatia remain susceptible to balls into the box.

READ NEXT: Our transfer tips and stats for the final round of World Cup Fantasy matches

Our research includes the penalty and corner-takers for each country, based on who has taken them either in Russia or, in some cases, in qualification. If there is no number next to a player’s name it’s because they took at least one in qualifying and/or warm-up games but are yet to take one at the World Cup itself.

We’ve also calculated which teams concede the most fouls and attempts from set-plays too to help you work out which nations are the most likely to get set-pieces in the first place.

To clarify, the ‘Attempts from set plays’ section combines those who have shot from direct free-kicks or those who have latched onto the end of a corner.

The deadline for Gameround 7 is at 15:00 BST on Sarturday July 14, so make sure you sort your team in time.

Double Everton is a no but very nice.

Kun to Auba in a few weeks and it's lovely.

I'm not going without Salah either. His ownership and therefore captain percentages are ridiculous despite the price

Glad to see all of those advocating karius over de gea have retreated into the shadows.

danny ward is now our number 1 keeper.

If he comes in at 4.5 i might finally be swayed to buy a liverpool keeper

He was player of the season for his club in 2015 and 2016.
I have had my eye on him for fantasy since mid 2015. He will play every pre season game from now on. Pay close attention and if i am right you just got ahead of the game.

Those advocating for Karius did so on the assumption that he was nailed. I'm sure 95% of them would have advocated against Karius if it transpired that he's not going to be nailed. I haven't seen many Karius advocates since the preseason blunder clips have come out anyway. People were simply being sensible rather than kneejerky. After all, he's only 5.0 instead of 5.5 because FPL would have been expecting a replacement or competition at the least (presumably). However, if he's #1, he could be better value than anyone. I wouldn't be harsh on anyone chasing value, since that's what we're all doing anyway 🙂

Why did they ever think he was nailed?

He was bought in 2016. Had a run. Made big mistakes. Lost confidence. Took a year to get back in the side. Had a good run. Made big mistakes. Confidence is shot. I said he was a no go before pre season started. He has made multiple errors in pre season in non pressure games. Liverpool have unsuccessfuly tried to replace him going as far as meeting with allissons agents at anfield during the brazil friendly. Liverpool supporters unanimously loathe the guy. I am personally over the moon at an unproven championship keeper taking his place. He conceded 7 goals in his last 2 champs leagues games. You dodged a bullet.

By assumption, I don't mean they believed him to be nailed. We all need to make assumptions in order to make decisions, because there are too many gaps in our knowledge at this time. Like I said, IF he's #1, he's good value - that's the thinking behind it.

I've made a few changes to my team - I know it won't be the last time I do this but I had some great comments, advice and discussion when I posted my previous effort at the start of the week that I wanted to go again.....

    Ederson, (Begovic)
    Robertson, Coleman, Baines, (Tomkins, Cedric)
    Salah, Mane, Silva, Sigurdsson, Mkhitaryan
    Zaha, Arnautovic (Kamara)

Keepers - Ederson is a cheap and nailed way into the city backline. He has great fixtures early on except for weeks 1,8,10 & 12. Originally he was paired with £4m fodder but i had a spare £0.5m and it turns out Begovic has CAR, wat, ful & new in the weeks I just mentioned so in addition to having cover I could actually rotate my keepers.

Defenders - I removed Alonso due to uncertainty at Chelsea annd so many World Cup players missing (especially Kante) at the start of the season. I already had Robertson and Coleman but decided that the next best defender for the opening fixtures is Baines. Everton have great opening fixtures and an Everton spot was freed up due to dropping Tosun from my side.

Midfielders - I'm going all out in midfield this year - Salah is my captain every week, Silva is my City pick, Sigurdsson and Mkhi look like excellent value and i've decided that Mane is preferable to Sane, Mahrez, Eriksen or Firminho (by shifting money to the front line).

Attackers - Zaha has some good fixtures and hit form at the end of last season. Originally I also had Tosun but with uncertainty about Niasse competing with him and also West Ham getting some good signings and the Carroll injury setback I think I want Arnautivic instead despite the poor early fixtures. This leaves Kamara languishing in third spot on my bench.

Yes I have no premium strikers but I don't think this matters at the start of the season. If I think Mane will score more than Firmino then I'd rather have him. I do expect to transfer in Auba at some point which will require shifting some value around but if I can save a transfer one week then it should be easy with a -4 'mini wildcard'.

    Any opinions appreciated 🙂

      • 10 Years

I get what you are saying RE the strikers but by saving and doing a -4 mini WC you are missing out on other potential bandwagons and are screwed on injuries, tactical changes etc.

You still need to have one premium as a placeholder IMO

Thanks, I know it's a bit risky but I just can't see any premium strikers that I want until Arsenal's fixtures get better. I don't want one just because I feel I need a placeholder.
I have cover for injuries with my two £4.5m defenders. I'll jump on a few bandwagons early on if any mid price players start over performing but overall this team looks good for the first 10 weeks - it'll be a miracle if I haven't wildcarded by then.

Cool team, I like the "no heavy hitters except Salah"-approach. It seems sensible and a good balance between getting value in many spots and having a solid captain option with a high ceiling.

I would go Zaha to Austin and Silva to Mahrez myself. Pep has said Silva will be rotated more this season and Mahrez is their record buy, in his prime and coming off a good season. He should be one of the first on the team sheet, ahead of Sterling imo. Could use the last 0.5 to buy someone like Davies who seems underappreciated on here lately.

I also like Arnie pick, hes in my team too. I dont think the WHU fixtures are that bad for attacking assets.

Yes I may be underestimating Mahrez's gametime. I will watch closely to see if he looks nailed enough to be in my team - City assets on the whole are a worry.

I'd consider moving Baines, Ederson & Begovic to Mendy, Pickford & Stekelenburg. Cédric perfect cover GW1 for Mendy even if he is fit and you can probably play him in those 'bad' GWs you mentioned because of his attacking threat.

Excellent squad and I like your reasoning. My only minor quibble is your intention to drop Ederson for 'tough' fixtures. It's not just that BOU are incapable of keeping clean sheets, but that City were very strong away last season.

I thought someone may mention that - I have history benching my premium players for my bench players due to fixture difficulty. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but I do possibly pay too much attention to fixtures rather than individual player potential. You're probably right - if I buy an expensive keeper then I should just start him every week.

Interesting team alright. I have found that early on fixtures are not as reliable to gauge the outcome of matches. It's not until the first few gw that a form starts to show and what looked like an easy run, suddenly looks a lot tougher. Because of this i dont like the Everton doubles at the back. I only really double at the back with the top few sides. I would drop Baines for another. PVA maybe, there is good choices in that bracket? I can't help but feel there will be a lot of early wildcards this year because of world cup and a lot of change in managers and players. I also seem to think that there are a lot more clean sheets at the start of the season but I would love someone to confirm or dismiss this. I like the mane shout but would be unsure about Silva, Siggy and Arne. Not sure who is replace them with though.

I've always liked a defensive double up. I did it with Southampton last year for their easy run and it went pretty well. There have been a few comments about Baines not being up to it though so could be time to reconsider. It's just tough to find nailed on defenders for decent teams who didn't spend the summer running around in Russia. I may look at changing Silva to Mahrez if he looks more nailed. Siggy is a slight gamble but I'm hoping he's going to shine now that Rooney isn't getting in his way. Arne had a great end to last season, I think he could do really well this year if he keeps his elbows to himself and Carroll stays injured (probably a given).
        Thanks for the response.

I think that your team structure is spot on.

I think arnautovic is a mistake. Too much uncertainty and you dont want a roop when you are already so light up front.
I think tosun is the better pick their. Otherwise upgrade to firmino by going 4 5 1

Thanks, I will monitor the friendlies. At the end of last season Arnie looked so dangerous, if he can carry that forward then I don't think the fixtures will matter too much. I do like the look of Tosun but Niasse could be the better option depending on who starts. I'm out of spots for Firmino as I have Robertson, Salah and Mane but I do think he's a great early pick.

Anyone think City might be slow out of the gates this year? Pep's first season (where they admittedly started very strongly) was a bit inconsistent, and with the likely rotation and players being rested at the start of this season this is somewhat a new side that will need some time to gel together.

Exactly, maybe wildcard in a 4.0 or less to boost team value elsewhere. Picking a 4.0 from GW1 offers little value and harms chances of stretching your starting budget with price increases.

Spurs at home when they'll likely rest returning WC players... good chance of a decent return.

    3 x Everton
    3 x Liverpool
    3 x Man City

    Too risky ?

Fixtures for all 3 of thoose teams look good till GW8

It makes sense, the two most attacking teams who are expected to finish 1st & 2nd + the team with the best fixtures in the opening weeks with potentially under priced players.

Not risky. I almost have the same. Can’t go wrong with good fixtures IMO.

    Ramsey - Salah - Eriksen - Walcott - Costa
    Firmino - Aguero - Kamara

Bailly and Coleman for the first two weeks. Coleman and Bellerin after that once Arsenal's fixtures clear and we have a better idea of how they line up.

Only if Newcastle sign someone who's capable of scoring a goal. Good player or not if he's playing with Joselu/Perez/Diame/Ritchie that team just won't do anything

    Salah, Sanchez, Siggy, Deulofeu, Kenedy.

Kenedy started 13 games for Newcastle and got 2 goals, 2 assists. Not saying he's a bad option but steady on now. He's more expensive now than he was last season, but nobody owned him then.
