Pre-Season

Zaha plays out wide as Southampton persist with back-three

Wilfried Zaha was deployed as a wide-forward in Crystal Palace’s first pre-season friendly, after playing as a striker last season.

Fantasy managers will be hoping that changes after his change of classification in Fantasy Premier League for 2018/19.

Elsewhere Southampton’s experimentation with a back-three continues to leak goals against lesser opposition although Nathan Redmond continued his impressive pre-season form.

Liverpool continue to largely use youth players with plenty of their key individuals still on holiday from the World Cup, while Wolves and Huddersfield got their summers off to a positive start.

In this edition of Scout Notes we’ve got all the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from latest pre-season friendlies ahead of the 2018/19 FPL campaign.

FC HELSINGØR 2-2 CRYSTAL PALACE

Goals: Alexander Sørloth (£5.0m), Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m)

Assists: Sullay Kakikai, James McArthur (£5.0m)

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) made a second-half appearance on the left side of a front three as Crystal Palace drew with Danish side FC Helsingør. That is slightly wider than Fantasy managers were expecting after his striker’s role last season caused him to be reclassified as a forward in FPL.

Alexander Sørloth (£5.0m) scored the first goal for the Eagles after they had fallen behind to a Douglas header in the third minute.

Sullay Kaikai’s good feet allowed him the space to play a ball across to Sørloth to convert easily, making it 1-1 at the break.

Defender Jairo Riedewald (£4.5m) was deployed in midfield but had a poor game.

Julian Speroni (£4.0m) replaced goalkeeper Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) at half-time, with Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) not involved in the match.

Also coming on for second-half displays were centre-back pairing James Tomkins (£4.5m) and Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m), as well winger Andros Townsend (£6.0m). All three of them played important parts in the match’s subsequent goals.

Sakho, who dictated play from the centre-back position, was the one to find the net for Palace, with just his second touch. Townsend’s corner was met by Christian Benteke (£6.5m) whose effort was flicked on by James McArthur (£5.0m) for Sakho to bundle the ball into the net.

Palace could have extended their lead soon after, but substitute Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m) hit the side-netting when put through by Zaha.

Tomkins was unfortunate to score an own-goal in the 83rd minute, directing the ball past Speroni when trying to clear his lines.

CRYSTAL PALACE XI (4-4-2): Guaita (Speroni 45’); Souaré (van Aanholt 58’), Jach (Sakho 58’), Kelly (Tomkins 58’), Wan-Bissaka (Ward 58’); Schlupp (Lokilo 45’), Kirby, Riedewald (McArthur 58’), Puncheon (Townsend 58’); Kaikai (Zaha 58’), Sørloth (Benteke 58’).

Jiangsu Suning 2-3 Southampton

Goals: Manolo Gabbiani (£6.0m), Nathan Redmond (£5.5m), Sam Gallagher

Assists: Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m), Steven Davis (£5.0m)

Nathan Redmond (£5.5m) scored his second pre-season goal as Southampton beat Jiangsu Suning in China. The former Norwich City man continued to get forward as often as possible and was a constant threat, while manager Mark Hughes experimented with a back three again.

Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.0m) was given the nod to start ahead of Charlie Austin (£6.0m) and even netted in the 26th minute. New signing Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m) crossed the ball in from the right-wing for Gabbiadini to head back across goal to score.

Left-back Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) was deployed at centre-back alongside Jack Stephens (£4.5m) and Wesley Hoedt (£4.5m) again. One of them is expected to drop out in light of Jannick Vestergaard signing from Borussia Mönchengladbach. Matty Targett took up the left wing-back role.

The hosts took advantage of the back-three in the 29th minute, a through-ball from Gao Tianyi opened them up for Zhang Lingfeng to score. Richmond Boakye picked up the scraps from a poorly cleared corner five minutes later to give Suning the lead.

Redmond’s 43rd minute effort from range, in the aftermath of a corner, put the Saints back on level terms just before half-time.

Substitute Sam Gallagher won it for Southampton in the second-half after a smart pass from Steven Davis (£5.0m).

Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) started in goal again, with Fraser Forster (£4.5m) coming on at half-time. New arrival Angus Gunn (£4.5m) is yet to form part of a match-day squad for the Saints.

SOUTHAMPTON XI (3-5-1-1): McCarthy (Forster 45’); Bertrand (Reed 63’), Hoedt, Stephens; Targett (McQueen 45’), Lemina (Clasie 63’), Ward-Prowse (Davis 63’), Romeu (Hojbjerg 45’), Redmond (Sims 63’); Armstrong (Gallagher 63’); Gabbiadini (Austin 45’).

TRANMERE ROVERS 2-3 LIVERPOOL

Goals: Rafael Camacho, Sheyi Ojo, Adam Lallana (£7.0m)

Assists: Sheyi Ojo, Naby Keita (£7.5m), Ryan Kent

New signing Naby Keita (£7.5m) made it two assists in two matches for Liverpool as they beat Tranmere Rovers 3-2 at Prenton Park.

The Guinean international lined up alongside fellow new arrival Fabinho (£6.0m) for the first time as they anchored a 4-2-3-1 formation in the first-half.

It was in the opening 45 minutes that Liverpool looked stronger with Rafael Camacho, Sheyi Ojo and Adam Lallana (£7.0m), playing in a number 10 role, scoring the goals.

Keita got the assist for Ojo, who had provided the pass for Camacho to break the deadlock. Ryan Kent, who scored against Chester, set up Lallana for his first goal of pre-season.

Tranmere were able to come back into the game in the second-half, after Jurgen Klopp had made 11 changes.

Ollie Norburn’s free-kick was spilled by Loris Karius (£5.0m) in the 72nd minute allowing Johnny Smith to easily find the net. Such a mistake from the goalkeeper, especially after his Champions League final display, will not give Fantasy managers confidence in the Liverpool defence. Klopp has been trying to find a replacement for Karius over the summer but opted to give Danny Ward a chance in the first-half, with Simon Mignolet (£5.0m) still at the World Cup with Belgium.

James Milner’s (£5.5m) slip in the 82nd minute allowed Amadou Soukouna to get a second for Tranmere, but Liverpool were able to hold on for the win.

LIVERPOOL FIRST-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Ward; Robertson, Klavan, Phillips, Camacho; Fabinho, Keita; Kent, Lallana, Ojo; Solanke.

LIVERPOOL SECOND-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Karius; Moreno, Chirivella, Gomez, Clyne; Woodburn, Milner; C Jones, Sturridge, Wilson; Origi.

BASEL 1-2 WOLVES

Goals: Rafa Mir (£4.5m), Diogo Jota (£6.5m)

Assists: Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.5m), Matt Doherty (£4.5m)

Wolves’s budget options were involved in the goals as the newly-promoted side beat FC Basel 2-1 this week.

Former Norwich City striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel opened the scoring with a header but Nuno’s side were soon level.

It was Rafa Mir (£4.5m), starting the game up front, who got the goal, side-footing into the roof of the net following an Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.5m) corner.

A full change of personnel at half-time saw another 11 players line up in a 3-4-3 formation after the break. Notably, defenders Barry Douglas (£5.0m) and Matt Doherty (£4.5m) were deployed in the midfield four.

Not surprisingly, Doherty soon provided an assist, setting up Diogo Jota (£6.5m), operating on the left-flank of the front three, to score the winner.

WOLVES FIRST-HALF XI (3-4-3): Ruddy; Hause, Batth, John; Giles, Goncalves, Watt, Buur; Ashley-Seal, Mir, Cavaleiro.

WOLVES SECOND-HALF XI (3-4-3): Norris; Boly, Coady, Bennett; Douglas, Gibbs-White, Neves, Doherty; Jota, Bonatini, Costa.

BURY 0-4 HUDDERSFIELD

Goals: Alex Pritchard (£5.0m), Rajiv van la Parra (£5.0m), Abdelhamid Sabiri (£4.5m), Matty Daly

Assists: Phillip Billing (£4.5m), Chris Lowë x2 (£4.5m), Collin Quaner (£4.5m)

Left-back Chris Lowë (£4.5m) put up two assists as Huddersfield Town recorded a routine pre-season win over League Two side Bury.

Alex Pritchard (£5.0m) gave the Terriers the lead in the first-half when Phillip Billing (£4.5m) pounced on a loose-ball and fed the former Norwich City man with an incisive pass.

It was the players brought on for the second-half who put the game out of reach for the hosts, though. Lowë’s cross was volleyed into the net by Rajiv van la Parra (£5.0m) shortly after the restart.

12 minutes later Lowë was the provider again, his cross this time headed into the net by midfielder Abdelhamid Sabiri (£4.5m).

Youngster Matty Daly scored the fourth and final goal, unmarked on the back-post after a cross from Collin Quaner (£4.5m).

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN FIRST-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Hamer; Williams, Kongolo, Schindler, Hadergjonaj; Billing, Bacuna; Ince, Pritchard, Scannell; Mounié.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN SECOND-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Coleman; Lowë, Hefele, Stankovic, Smith; Hogg, Sabiri; Quaner, Daly, van la Parra; Depoitre.

    Zaha or Benteke?

Or even Sorloth? Was he brought in to back up Benteke or replace him? If Benteke's poor form continues, maybe Sorloth will be 1st choice up front with Zaha continuing out wide.

If Benteke can put his horrendous season behind him he would be great value at £6.5m

I agree, and always have thought so.

Zaha, like Arnie, were great options last year because they were playing as strikers despite being listed as midfielders, this year they are listed as strikers, who will sometimes be played as midfielders.
Less points for goal scored, means they are not good value anymore.

Ive come to the conclusion that Salah is the only good captain option for the first gameweeks so Ive redone my team to get him in.

My general strategy is based on having good value players in every position, and especially in defense. Every time someone analyze statistically where the best value is to be had, its in the more expensive defenders. However you also need a good, more or less fixture proof captain. That is going to be Salah. I also want to be as resilient as possible against hits at the start of the season, thats why Im "wasting" a million extra or so on the bench. I believe this million is better spent here than trying to squeeze in an 1m upgrade somewhere else.

    Ederson/4.0
    Davies - Azpi - Robertson - PVA - Douglas
    Salah (C) - Mahrez - Ramsey - Lennon - Stephens
    Firmino - Arnie - Austin

GK: Nailed City asset, Im afraid of rotation so Im going the safest route. Pep teams have historically been more and more solid defensively over time, Im thinking this wll continue and that City will top the CS table this season.

Defenders: I think this is where we should be looking for value. Ive picked Davies, Azpi and Robertson as premiums, and PVA and Douglas as slightly cheaper options. Davies could be Mendy depending on pre-season/Community Shield. I know I will get some comments saying Im wasting money on the bench but I think with uncertainty of lineups and rotation fear its not so bad to spend 1.0m more on Douglas over a 4.0. I dont like any of the 4.5 options.

Midfield: Gone for Mahrez as I think everything points to him being a top pick this season. Better player than Sterling, less rotation risk than D.Silva He should be amazing value. Ramsey should be nailed as Emery has claimed he will give him a central role. Lennon seems good value for 0.5 over the cheapies. Stephens as pure bench fodder who should be 2p if he needs to come on.

Forwards: Not much to say, gone for 3 picks I think will do well. I dont think WHU fixtures are that bad for attacking players.

    Thoughts and comments appreciated 🙂

Team looks good and you've clearly thought through the structure and your picks.

My only question would be what you plan to do if Auba/Laca/Kun/Kane or another premium striker become essential. It's not unlikely that 2 of these or a new Chelsea striker could hit form together.

Cant have them all. I made too many hits last season chasing whoever had 2 good gameweeks and then the player I removed went on a run instead.

I dont really want Salah, I just have him because hes the best captain option. If someone else materializes as a great, consistent captain option I will probably remove Salah to fund it.

I think its best to completely avoid Spurs at the beginning of the season. Lots of players back late, lots of rotation for wingbacks and a new stadium.

      Arnie has crap fixtures.

Looks very good overall, I agree that you need Salah as captain in the opening weeks.
i'm not sure about Davies from the start, Spurs are missing so many assets and he is a potential transfer waiting to happen once Rose is back. I'd downgrade him to monreal - especially as you have the players to bench Monreal in the first two tricky fixtures. Then you'd have him in place ready for their decent run.
With the £0.5m saved I would upgrade Austin as he is not nailed and will share time with Gabbi. you could get a Burnley striker or even Benteke if he shows any preseason ability to actually score (believe it or not he was good once upon a time).

100% agree with your thinking. After last season, I don't think carrying pure fodder is viable unless you plan to Wildcard early, which I don't.

Awesome defence, it's the way to go. Every week your team will look so much better with that strong defence and you can even afford to rotate them based on fixtures if you want to.

Lennon not a bad pick though I reckon. Agree on Mahrez, my only concern does he start first few or does Pep give him more time to settle into his role.

Personally I've gone for a first bench spot rotation of Cairney (5.0) & Pritchard (5.0) because they rotate extremely well from GW3 onwards and I think between them they could actually score well compared to having Stephens who will only ever score 2-3 points. If I have injuries they could both play, but more realistically neither will play or 1 with the good/home fixture will play.

Nice balance - albeit pretty weak bench.

Not a fan of Bournemouth defence - as you'll be playing Ederson each week, you might want to consider going with a 4.0 reserve keep and upgrading Daniels or your bench?

        Maybe Stephens/Masuaku to a decent 5.0 option like Kenedy/Cairney?

Think there are better 4.5 options than Daniels - Duffy, Dunk, LeJeune, Doherty (Wolves) or Douglas at 5.0 if you can stretch to it.

Thanks. Funny thing is I planned on playing Begovic for just gw1 and then benching him permanently till gw8 or so with ederson as my no. 1. Now may just get bench fodder and play him throughout. Never been one for a strong bench. Will roll the dice. Am I the only one hyped up on Everton?

I've generally gone for a weak bench too - but with rotation becoming more and more common, IMO it probably pays to invest in a bit more depth this year.

Think Everton are worth investing in. Currently just on Coleman, but would happily squeeze Tosun in if I can (and he seems first choice). Punting on Jota over Walcott, but could be persuaded otherwise depending on pre-season.....

Pretty well rounded team. Was wondering how you got 100m to fit all these. Would swap Smalling for VVD or Robbo if you can pull strings. More nailed on options. Bench maybe too weak. Would downgrade one of Auba or aguero to a mid level striker like zaha or tosun and then get a better bench and maybe a better option in midfield

Bench could be too weak, not sure any of those three will be starting players.
Don't need Foster if you have Ederson, just get a 4.0m keeper.

Yedlin. Poor fixtures. Don't expect much from Daniels in terms of clean sheets even with good looking games. No cs for Bellerin first 2 but attacking potential there. Maybe swap to Pool defender would be better. Son going for Asian games. Fabregas has too many question marks. Would sarri even play him? Morata to Firmino

Fabregas and Morata to be sold within next 2 weeks.
Would maybe add 1 premium defender.

    McCarthy (Fabianski)
Robertson Coleman Daniel - (Cedric Peltier)
    Salah Sanchez Sane Walcott Kennedy
    Aguero Austin - (Kamara)

      Really nice!
Just not sure Austin is nailed and I think there are better options than Walcott and Kenedy at their price points

Which pairing would you prefer to fill the gaps or is 'C' the better option? Thanks.

    Rui Patricio / Foster
Robertson / Van Aanholt / Ward / Cedric / Peltier
    Salah / xxxx / xxxx / Hughes / Cairney
    Firmino / Aguero / Zaha

    A - Mahrez & Jota?
    B - Sanchez & Costa?
C - Just go Sane & Jota and downgrade Ward > Daniels?

    Lost on the last article...

Someone explain the Kenedy love please?
He played what 14/15 games for Newcastle last year, and scored twice against Southampton (I think)...other than that just a 2/3pt player?

Genuine question by the way, looking for serious replies

name a better option at 5.0 who will offer the consistent threat of Kenedy?

Well I don't really consider £5m a useful price bracket. You either want a £4.5m option you'd be happy to leave on the bench, in a 3-4-3. Or someone playing who will do better than a goal every 15 games. Xhaka will do that.

Personally I think Wilshere, and Cairney especially, would be better options.

Don't know enough about the Cairney chappie yet but Wilshere has minimal attacking threat in centre mid other than a few assists. WIll all Pellegrini's attacking options it's be nice to think Wilshere will be played further forward but why rob Peter to play Paul?

Wilshere could be playing in the No.10 role with Lanzini out.
Cairney is on penalties for Fulham.

Disagreed. Absolutely best value in the 5.0m price bracket. I'm going with two players from it.

Prob none but threat doesn't mean points and debateable how consistent any Newcastle player's threat is, especially early season. If he's your fifth mid I think get a 4.5m player to bench rather than a 5.0m.

He is an attacking midfielder at £5m and he definitely passed the eye test when he did play, he was unlucky not to score more if I remember correctly.

Question on the article: It states the Palace formation as 4-4-2, but also states Zaha was deployed as a wide forward.....this needs some clarity. Did palace start in a 4-4-2 then switched to 4-3-3 with the subs they made on 58 minutes?

The article says Zaha made a second half appearance on the left side of a front three. So yes I assume they played 4-3-3 when he came on.

This is why Zaha being reclassified makes no sense.

He played up front because of injuries. Sanchez spent far longer as a centre forward without being moved.

Arnie, there was more case for, but even there I thought the decision premature.

Either make all the Sanchez, Haz, Salah types into forwards or none of them.

The Arnie, Zaha switches just seem arbitrary.

I guess FPL Towers are assuming Hodgson would keep him up top and abandon Tekkers.

What injuries? Hodgson came in and switched to 4-4-2. Even when Benteke was fit and starting Zaha was playing upfront with them.

      This is nonsense though.

Sanchez started as a striker because Giroud went to the final of the Euros. Then Giroud struggled with injuries, and Sanchez played at a too high level to change things around. By the half way point of the season Sanchez barely played as a striker again, and Arsenal signed Lacazette before the next season's FPL got released. Sanchez was never going to play as a striker last season, and it was a correct decision to put him as a forward.

Last season Zaha returned from injury and got immediately placed as a forward alongside Benteke. Townsend and RLC occupied the wing positions in Hodgson's classic 4-4-2. In December RLC got injured, and Palace went more towards 4-3-3. That's the only point where Zaha didn't play as a forward, when Palace had Schlupp, Cabaye and RLC constantly injured. At that point Sørloth got signed and Zaha very soon got injured.

Upon Zaha's return from injury for the second time, he got substituted on for Benteke against Chelsea. Sørloth then got injured, but Benteke was always available from the bench in the following games where Zaha started up front with Townsend. That happened because RLC got back from injury and McArthur had proven himself in the meantime.

Roberto Firmino will look to re-join his Liverpool team-mates when the squad travels to France to train later this month: “Bobby will be in for the second camp,” revealed Jurgen Klopp: "Then the English guys [+ Mignolet and Lovren] who will come a week later." #LFC

    Bobby nailed on for GW1.

I had roughly the same template with a salah-less draft.

I caved though as I didn't have the b@lls to play it come GW1

      I personally like it though.
