Pre-Season

Zaha plays out wide as Southampton persist with back-three

Wilfried Zaha was deployed as a wide-forward in Crystal Palace’s first pre-season friendly, after playing as a striker last season.

Fantasy managers will be hoping that changes after his change of classification in Fantasy Premier League for 2018/19.

Elsewhere Southampton’s experimentation with a back-three continues to leak goals against lesser opposition although Nathan Redmond continued his impressive pre-season form.

Liverpool continue to largely use youth players with plenty of their key individuals still on holiday from the World Cup, while Wolves and Huddersfield got their summers off to a positive start.

In this edition of Scout Notes we’ve got all the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from latest pre-season friendlies ahead of the 2018/19 FPL campaign.

FC HELSINGØR 2-2 CRYSTAL PALACE

Goals: Alexander Sørloth (£5.0m), Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m)

Assists: Sullay Kakikai, James McArthur (£5.0m)

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) made a second-half appearance on the left side of a front three as Crystal Palace drew with Danish side FC Helsingør. That is slightly wider than Fantasy managers were expecting after his striker’s role last season caused him to be reclassified as a forward in FPL.

Alexander Sørloth (£5.0m) scored the first goal for the Eagles after they had fallen behind to a Douglas header in the third minute.

Sullay Kaikai’s good feet allowed him the space to play a ball across to Sørloth to convert easily, making it 1-1 at the break.

Defender Jairo Riedewald (£4.5m) was deployed in midfield but had a poor game.

Julian Speroni (£4.0m) replaced goalkeeper Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) at half-time, with Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) not involved in the match.

Also coming on for second-half displays were centre-back pairing James Tomkins (£4.5m) and Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m), as well winger Andros Townsend (£6.0m). All three of them played important parts in the match’s subsequent goals.

Sakho, who dictated play from the centre-back position, was the one to find the net for Palace, with just his second touch. Townsend’s corner was met by Christian Benteke (£6.5m) whose effort was flicked on by James McArthur (£5.0m) for Sakho to bundle the ball into the net.

Palace could have extended their lead soon after, but substitute Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m) hit the side-netting when put through by Zaha.

Tomkins was unfortunate to score an own-goal in the 83rd minute, directing the ball past Speroni when trying to clear his lines.

CRYSTAL PALACE XI (4-4-2): Guaita (Speroni 45’); Souaré (van Aanholt 58’), Jach (Sakho 58’), Kelly (Tomkins 58’), Wan-Bissaka (Ward 58’); Schlupp (Lokilo 45’), Kirby, Riedewald (McArthur 58’), Puncheon (Townsend 58’); Kaikai (Zaha 58’), Sørloth (Benteke 58’).

Jiangsu Suning 2-3 Southampton

Goals: Manolo Gabbiani (£6.0m), Nathan Redmond (£5.5m), Sam Gallagher

Assists: Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m), Steven Davis (£5.0m)

Nathan Redmond (£5.5m) scored his second pre-season goal as Southampton beat Jiangsu Suning in China. The former Norwich City man continued to get forward as often as possible and was a constant threat, while manager Mark Hughes experimented with a back three again.

Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.0m) was given the nod to start ahead of Charlie Austin (£6.0m) and even netted in the 26th minute. New signing Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m) crossed the ball in from the right-wing for Gabbiadini to head back across goal to score.

Left-back Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) was deployed at centre-back alongside Jack Stephens (£4.5m) and Wesley Hoedt (£4.5m) again. One of them is expected to drop out in light of Jannick Vestergaard signing from Borussia Mönchengladbach. Matty Targett took up the left wing-back role.

The hosts took advantage of the back-three in the 29th minute, a through-ball from Gao Tianyi opened them up for Zhang Lingfeng to score. Richmond Boakye picked up the scraps from a poorly cleared corner five minutes later to give Suning the lead.

Redmond’s 43rd minute effort from range, in the aftermath of a corner, put the Saints back on level terms just before half-time.

Substitute Sam Gallagher won it for Southampton in the second-half after a smart pass from Steven Davis (£5.0m).

Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) started in goal again, with Fraser Forster (£4.5m) coming on at half-time. New arrival Angus Gunn (£4.5m) is yet to form part of a match-day squad for the Saints.

SOUTHAMPTON XI (3-5-1-1): McCarthy (Forster 45’); Bertrand (Reed 63’), Hoedt, Stephens; Targett (McQueen 45’), Lemina (Clasie 63’), Ward-Prowse (Davis 63’), Romeu (Hojbjerg 45’), Redmond (Sims 63’); Armstrong (Gallagher 63’); Gabbiadini (Austin 45’).

TRANMERE ROVERS 2-3 LIVERPOOL

Goals: Rafael Camacho, Sheyi Ojo, Adam Lallana (£7.0m)

Assists: Sheyi Ojo, Naby Keita (£7.5m), Ryan Kent

New signing Naby Keita (£7.5m) made it two assists in two matches for Liverpool as they beat Tranmere Rovers 3-2 at Prenton Park.

The Guinean international lined up alongside fellow new arrival Fabinho (£6.0m) for the first time as they anchored a 4-2-3-1 formation in the first-half.

It was in the opening 45 minutes that Liverpool looked stronger with Rafael Camacho, Sheyi Ojo and Adam Lallana (£7.0m), playing in a number 10 role, scoring the goals.

Keita got the assist for Ojo, who had provided the pass for Camacho to break the deadlock. Ryan Kent, who scored against Chester, set up Lallana for his first goal of pre-season.

Tranmere were able to come back into the game in the second-half, after Jurgen Klopp had made 11 changes.

Ollie Norburn’s free-kick was spilled by Loris Karius (£5.0m) in the 72nd minute allowing Johnny Smith to easily find the net. Such a mistake from the goalkeeper, especially after his Champions League final display, will not give Fantasy managers confidence in the Liverpool defence. Klopp has been trying to find a replacement for Karius over the summer but opted to give Danny Ward a chance in the first-half, with Simon Mignolet (£5.0m) still at the World Cup with Belgium.

James Milner’s (£5.5m) slip in the 82nd minute allowed Amadou Soukouna to get a second for Tranmere, but Liverpool were able to hold on for the win.

LIVERPOOL FIRST-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Ward; Robertson, Klavan, Phillips, Camacho; Fabinho, Keita; Kent, Lallana, Ojo; Solanke.

LIVERPOOL SECOND-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Karius; Moreno, Chirivella, Gomez, Clyne; Woodburn, Milner; C Jones, Sturridge, Wilson; Origi.

BASEL 1-2 WOLVES

Goals: Rafa Mir (£4.5m), Diogo Jota (£6.5m)

Assists: Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.5m), Matt Doherty (£4.5m)

Wolves’s budget options were involved in the goals as the newly-promoted side beat FC Basel 2-1 this week.

Former Norwich City striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel opened the scoring with a header but Nuno’s side were soon level.

It was Rafa Mir (£4.5m), starting the game up front, who got the goal, side-footing into the roof of the net following an Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.5m) corner.

A full change of personnel at half-time saw another 11 players line up in a 3-4-3 formation after the break. Notably, defenders Barry Douglas (£5.0m) and Matt Doherty (£4.5m) were deployed in the midfield four.

Not surprisingly, Doherty soon provided an assist, setting up Diogo Jota (£6.5m), operating on the left-flank of the front three, to score the winner.

WOLVES FIRST-HALF XI (3-4-3): Ruddy; Hause, Batth, John; Giles, Goncalves, Watt, Buur; Ashley-Seal, Mir, Cavaleiro.

WOLVES SECOND-HALF XI (3-4-3): Norris; Boly, Coady, Bennett; Douglas, Gibbs-White, Neves, Doherty; Jota, Bonatini, Costa.

BURY 0-4 HUDDERSFIELD

Goals: Alex Pritchard (£5.0m), Rajiv van la Parra (£5.0m), Abdelhamid Sabiri (£4.5m), Matty Daly

Assists: Phillip Billing (£4.5m), Chris Lowë x2 (£4.5m), Collin Quaner (£4.5m)

Left-back Chris Lowë (£4.5m) put up two assists as Huddersfield Town recorded a routine pre-season win over League Two side Bury.

Alex Pritchard (£5.0m) gave the Terriers the lead in the first-half when Phillip Billing (£4.5m) pounced on a loose-ball and fed the former Norwich City man with an incisive pass.

It was the players brought on for the second-half who put the game out of reach for the hosts, though. Lowë’s cross was volleyed into the net by Rajiv van la Parra (£5.0m) shortly after the restart.

12 minutes later Lowë was the provider again, his cross this time headed into the net by midfielder Abdelhamid Sabiri (£4.5m).

Youngster Matty Daly scored the fourth and final goal, unmarked on the back-post after a cross from Collin Quaner (£4.5m).

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN FIRST-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Hamer; Williams, Kongolo, Schindler, Hadergjonaj; Billing, Bacuna; Ince, Pritchard, Scannell; Mounié.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN SECOND-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Coleman; Lowë, Hefele, Stankovic, Smith; Hogg, Sabiri; Quaner, Daly, van la Parra; Depoitre.

I assume it's been mentioned but Kenedy @ 5.0 looks tempting especially as he was on the wing last year.

    Cheapie option or no?

Right now I believe Cairney, Ralls, Wilshere and even Masuaku provide better value. But I could be wrong.

I had him since GW 31 last season. Gave me one assist I think. Nothing in the DGWs either.

I guess i'm thinking with a pre season he may be more of a part of the team. For 5m i'm not looking at huge returns but that was weak. As Andy said below with the fixtures a watchlist option may be the best idea to start with.

As noted earlier, I totally agree with everything, except Masuaku, who I'm not sure has a place in the team with Yarnmoleko, Anderson, Arnie, Wilshere, and Antonio

Pellegrini likes a 4,4,2, well actually it’s more like a 4,2,2,2 meaning no wing backs which would mean Creswell would play for us LB and not Masuaku.

            This is just my opinion.

Possibly a touch heavy in defence. You certainly need Mendy to be nailed for this & not sure that will be the case immediately with him being with France all the way in WC (which is why I moved him out of my drafts).

Perhaps the 1itb could go on the 4.5 midfield sub as someone who rotates well with Deu/Cairney, assuming you're going 4-3-3.

City midfield is such a minefield it's tough to say really....I'd say that Sane has the best shot at high number of minutes early on simply because:

          - Whole summer off (unlike everyone else at MCI except Mahrez)
          - Doesn't have to get up-to-speed with City style (like Mahrez)
          - Pep comments last year RE width on left without Mendy (don't think Mendy starts the season due to going all way w/France).

So I think Sane starts more....but does that mean more points? Not 100% sure. City players could come off the bench this season and deliver madness! So if your gut is telling you Mahrez, perhaps stick with it?

      Like a lot it!
      Personal meanings:

Downgrade either Cairney or Hughes, not planning on playing both anyway? Zaha over King, main man and a better player , probably better team to imo. PVA to expensive for my taste, but like it! Sure about Mahrez? Considering the same LFC trio.

    PVA, Coleman, Ward (Daniels, 4.0)
    Eriksen, Alexis, Mane, Walcott (Wilshere)
    Aguero, Arnautovic, Zaha

    Feedback appreciated...thanks!

Imo: Eriksen might not start GW1-2 for a "week" Spurs team (I expect Kane / Trip / Alli / Alder at least to be out)
Chose Sigurdsson over Walcott but tempting too.
Arnau will suffer from first fixtures in the first 6-8GW (it was along with Zaha / Kun in my first team)

Eriksen definitely will start considering many key players rested from WC. Hes had enough rest

Eriksen will definitely start mate.... just don't think Spurs have too much potential for heavy scores while they're reassembling their side post-WC.

Not sure going without Salah is worth the risk - even though it does make your midfield look like rock star status.

    Your thoughts Gentlemen....

    Pickford
    Robertson / Alonso / Daniels / Davies
    Mooy / Salah / Silva
    Aguero / Firminho / Zaha

    Subs- Fabianski/Masuaku/Stephens/Peltier

I worry that Silva has more midfield competition this year and may rotate - and Davies always seemed to sit the bench when I got him in last season - my bad luck on timing. Rest looks good.

Thanks mate, I'll probably go with this and see how the team news looks like for the first few weeks.

I'm starting with Davies because of Trippier and Rose at the WC. That might change with time...

Almost perfect imo. Pep hinted Silva might get fewer minutes this season. Would also replace Mooy, even though I like, heavy fixtures to begin with.

Hi guys, worked on my team, could you please give me some feedback, any suggestion appreciated 😉

    Pickford
    Robertson - Coleman - PVA
    Mahrez - Sané - Milivo - Deulofeu
    Kun - Firmi - Tosun

Subs: Bego - Douglas - Kola - Redmond

    Why?

Pickford: strong fixture, not convinced by ManU and decided to go with 3 MCI upfront
Defense: Fixture, offensive returns, same for ManU and no visibility on Che / Ars
Mid: 2 potential big hitters (limited rotation risk for the first 2/3GW imo), bid on the end of the Salah storm - budget midfielder with potential
Fwd: Kun prefered to Aubam (move GW3 ;)) and Kane wont start imo - best midpriced / budget fwd based on fixtures

    Thoughts?

Anyone else with a front line of Aguero - Auba - Tosun?
Their fixtures are generally too good to turn down.
All three could potentially be on pens, and I can't see Jesus being much of a threat to Aguero's place in the first few GWs at least.

Hadn't thought of that. If that's the case then the appeal of the 7m strikers is really being lowered - Zaha playing on the wing for Palace in a friendly and not knowing whether Arnie will start up front.

I'm fairly sure Tosun will be getting the nod early on but there's still that bench threat if it doesn't come off for him.

Lower than 7m looks a bit dreary... Wood / Josh King best options? Guh.

I'm staying away from Burnley players because I don't know how the EL will affect them.
Josh King isn't a convincing option since he barely played up front last season.
There's always Austin but he's so injury prone that it's just a transfer out waiting to happen.

As you said there's pretty much nobody safe under 7m

6 Gravless RMTs in a row.

To answer you all in one go,

You're generic template teams are basically a combination of 15 players from a range of about 25 'acceptable' FPL players. They are all fine, just fine.

Side note, these teams will all look drastically different in four weeks time, once big name transfers happen, and you rip your team apart to get in, Bale or Dybala or whoever. See example of the RMTs which followed Kenedy being added at £5m earlier today...and multiple it by 1000.

I'm all for debating the merits of player x over player y, best formation to use, wild card planning, fixture quality etc.

But the RMTs, and I know it's the same every year, well there is just no point with so many weeks until the season starts, and so much still to happen with transfers, pre-season games etc, in debating a team of 15.

I agree and in almost every case one posts an RMT and gets an answer, the answer is just to get the players the person writing the answer have but miss in the RMT...

Nobody even tries to look at the reasons why a team looks like it does

Nearer the start of the season when we have settled squads, and pre-season information, know more about returning world cup players etc, then RMTs become more relevant

Not aimed at you at all my friend, aimed at everyone posting a RMT at this stage of the season.

Glavless means you don't have a picture, it's just an indication that you've just signed up to the site quickly to get people to rate your team, and then disappear, and not contribute anything yourself.

As noted above in my reply to Cap'Crunch this site is all about discussing FPL issues, but at this stage of the season RMTs are pointless as they will change considerably over the next few weeks as noted in my original post.

and yes, it is your, it's a fair cop, correct grammar was all I had, you didn't need to take it there, or is it their?

No worries, I know how that stuff goes!

As I say the post wasn’t aimed at you, and if it helps, Fabianski has awful opening fixtures so you at least need a keeper you can rotate him with, masuaku might not play, check in preseason, Sessegnon is a defender classed as a midfielder, not good value...well a defender in the sense the Alonso is a defender.

Cheers, I'm a West Ham fan and I'd be surprised if Masuaku doesn't start, but I'll keep on top of it. Fabianski has always got good save points as well so I'll stick with him I think. I do kind of agree on Sessegnon though, think I'm gonna have to rethink there.

Course it is. It's all a bit of fun. There's no compunction to read or respond to RMTs.

Id say do not take it personally,it was more of broader view of RMTs in general.

There is a lot more to the community that RMTs.Sometimes some great debate and analysis on fpl and football teams and players breaks out.

                Robertson Cedric Daniels
                Salah Mane Sane Deulofeu

                First draft...

                Ederson
                Coleman, Bellerin, Robertson, Smalling
                Mane, Miki, Walcott
                Firmino, Aubameyang , Aguero

                Subs - no good subs

Is this good enough without Salah?

Think Dilva will start most games? City are just too stacked in midfield.
May be worth finding the extre 1mil for Sane?

No guarantees there either... rather have Silva and a better sub to cover the inevitable rotation of city mids...

                Here we go again!

Thoughts on the below? I'm fairly happy but feel that I may be missing something

                Ederson (Fabianski)
Stones / Cedric / Tomkins (Daniels / Boly)
Salah / Mili / Sane / Cairney (Neves)
                Lukaku / Firmino / Zaha

                Thanks in advance

I think your defense is weak.
Also wouldn't choose Mili or Lukaku.

                  1) fabianski to 4.0
                  2) then go for daniels to arnold

                Which looks better?

                a. Ederson + Coleman
                b. Pickford + Mendy

                Coleman, Wally, and Tosun overkill?
Fixtures are just so great, and Everton likely to be very attacking

Don't think you need two attackers. Coleman +1 is enough. Attacking doesn't mean returns.

Why though? Everton have better fixtures than all of them and are a better team than Wolves and Watford.

For me Tosun and Coleman would be enough .... normally only triple up on absolutely lethal teams that are in incredible form ....

Hey guys, any comments on the team below? One of the City attackers will become an Arsenal one in GW3.

                Patricio Betenelli
                Robertson Coleman Bailly Cedric 4.0
                Salah Sane Dilva Jota Deulofeu
                Aguero Tosun Kamara

I think Martial is a fantastic pick for the first two/three weeks. Then once Arsenals fixtures open up straight swap to Mkhitaryan. Nice team mate

Cheers for the feedback... Martial is for the first 2 fixtures then will probly switch to Mkitaryan ....

Austin if he looks good in pre-season is great Value IMO. On pens too... usually refs throw them around at the start of the season... Nice fixtures too... Iv Walcott on the bench too so can rotate him for good fixtures ...
