Community Round-up: World Cup Fantasy and FPL divide attention

As was the case last week, the Fantasy Football Scout Community’s attention has been split roughly down the middle with Fantasy World Cup approaching its climax and the launch of Fantasy Premier League 2018/19 provoking debate.

Rainer and the exquisitely named Ohhh Shola Ameobi helped bridge the two games with a look at the Premier League teams most affected by the ongoing tournament and when the players involved in the 2014 World Cup returned to domestic action.

We’ve got a round-up of the week’s hot topics, and the usual array of Community tables and competitions, in our regular article below.

The Hottest Topics

This time last week, we were midway through the World Cup quarter-finals and Legomane asked whether sticking or twisting was the best option regarding Fantasy World Cup captaincy.

G-Whizz returned with his regular clean sheet odds hot topic ahead of the semi-finals, while rainy mused on the anticlimax that was the yellow card count.

Rainer, meanwhile, helpfully pointed out that Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea could be badly hit by their players returning late from international duty.

Before the semi-finals commenced, our Community discussed their transfers, captains and chips. With England and Belgium set to contest the third-place play-off later today, Siva Mohan looked at the rotation between the semi-finals and the fairly meaningless “bronze medal” match in the 2014 World Cup.

Legomane returned with a stick-or-twist semi-final special, as did G-Whizz with his last look at the clean sheet odds of this World Cup.

Ohhh Shola Ameobi examined the precedent of when the Premier League players involved in the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup returned to their respective clubs.

World Cup ongoing or not, there’s no escaping the buzz around the FFS Community regarding the FPL launch.

Maximus Bonimus Pointimus asked if other managers adopted a player-orientated or structure-based approach to their Gameweek 1 squads, while Giggs Boson looked at the merits of both goalkeeper rotation and one Charlie Daniels.

Holding Matip held court while discussing five at the back and value according to position, while HamezMace floated the idea of a very early wildcard.

Rich2086 and Prøfeßor Bear gave a rundown of the Wolves side and warned us not to write off their assets, before CloudSky looked at some of the eye-catching fixture runs in the first quarter of the season.

Eden Wizard, meanwhile, suggested that Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero could well play together at the start of the season.

Norman Conquest rounded up the latest additions to the FPL game and their respective prices.

Our “members only” hot topics concentrated on the Rate My Team launch and, using this tool, what the best team over the first six Gameweeks would be.

The Eliteserien summer break was also a source of discussion, with Dupuytrens looking ahead to the transfer window and European Under-19 Championship.

Community Tables

Our members have been hard at work this week, creating no fewer than 13 public stats tables. FPL Virgin, in particular, has been beavering away, creating nine of those tables including the best defence of last season and the talisman theory.

Wainright looked at defenders who made the most penalty box touches, while easilythebest listed the players who had the most “big chances” last season.

Hotdogs-for-tea, meanwhile, rounded up the defenders who created the most chances and were the most attacking in 2017/18.

Community Tournaments

Ahead of the third-place play-off and final, competition in the Fantasy Football Scout mini-league for the McDonald’s FIFA World Cup game is hotting up. The current top of the league reads as follows:

1. Sladuna (385 points)
2. Lincon316 (363 points)
3. Ludaslol (362 points)
4. SmokinBadger (361 points)
5=. Matt5138008 (358 points)
5=. McGettigan16 (358 points)

Our Mods and Cons league, meanwhile, shaped up like this:

1. ZidanRamos (336 points)
2. GSumner (323 points)
3. JohannesN (309 points)
4. Jackpenn (300 points)
5. Matzi11a (296 points)

The latest update for Frøgball, which uses combined Fantasy scores to represent different nations, is here.

If you are running a community tournament or are thinking about starting one, and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

If Liverpool don't buy a keeper..

    Ward - 4.0
    Mendy - Coleman - Douglas - Tomkins - Peltier
    Salah - Eriksen - Ramsey - Walcott - Kenedy
    Aguero - Firmino - Kamara

Do we think wc players with high ownership will drop in price when/if they don't play first 1 or 2 weeks?

If you are buying a player at 10m or more then they have to be scoring at least 200pts over the season and be a viable captaincy option.

Just looking at the TSB% list. If it represents our casual rivals' squads, we'll get off to a helluva start. Just look at the starting XI:

    GK DDG, (okay, good)
DEF Trippier, TAA, Maguire (oh dear)
MID Salah (c) , De Bruyne, Mkhi, Lingard
    FWD Firmino, Kane, Zaha

Over half the line up will be awol GW1. Wahay!

    Thoughts on Sanchez at 10.5m?

Finding it hard to believe he will justify that price tag. Even in first few GWs when he will most likely play as the striker.

He played up top quite a few times last season and he was ineffective.

Just not the same threat at United as he was at Arsenal imo.

Plenty of RMT's with Aguero in no doubt to very kind run of fixtures at tge beginning of the season for City but is his future at Etihad certain ?

That's the thing, Pep is a bit crazy(in a positive way) and with all the offensive mids he have in his squad I wouldnt put it past him set up a team without recognized striker.

Just realised Aguero + 5m (currently Kenedy) is the same price as Mahrez + 7m.

      • 7 Years

If Zaha stays fit he will play 38 PL games a season and score a lot of points - probably 160pts+ which is good for a 7.0m fwd.

The question mark is over Mahrez and Aguero and their playing time. If Mahrez became nailed he would be gold IMO.

Could work out opposite to what you think. With other teams starting the season unsteadily, Burnley will have a full squad bar Pope and will be battle-hardened yet still fresh enough for 2 games a week early door. Mee and Tarks at CB in particular ought to manage to workload.

What are our thoughts on the following?

Sigurdsson: Failed to impress last season. People seem to be placing faith for this one. What's changed?

Jota: Can he make the step up to the prem?

    TAA: Nailed?

Morata: If he stays he has a good run of fixtures and Giroud should be rested. Worth a punt?

      A. Can see vast improvement under Silva, worth the punt with EVEs good run of fix!

      C. Not from the start.

Wouldn't touch any apart from TAA if looks to be nailed.

Walcott is 6.5 if you want Everton/a 6.5 player.

Think Morata and Hazard might be on the way out- so I'd steer clear from them apart from maybe Azp...and even then Courtois looks to be going as well.

Siggy has potential, but happy to start with just a Coleman and monitor situation.

Currently punting on Jota. But recognise it is a "fun" punt.

Wouldn't think so - World Cup hangover, competion for places and his age mean he'll probably be rotated. much prefer Robertson.

Morata has potential - but want to see what happens in pre-season. No idea where he fits into his new manager's plans.

Think Sigurdsson can do big things this year. On free kicks and should play as the ‘diamond’ behind the striker. If on pens, a godsend.

Wait and see. See Wolves surviving though, so will probably be good.

Not in the first few weeks.

Could be a bargain. See how preseason goes.

      I would definitely downgrade Alonso.

New manager is likely to play 4 at the back, which does not play to Alonso's strength in both real world and FPL. Indeed, might actually suit Emerson better.

I don't think there currently is at 5.5 - but I do suspect Cairney is a little over-hyped.

Will Hughes of Watford could be interesting at 5.0. Kenedy decent once his fixtures clear. Costa of Wolves worth monitoring.

Ignoring chips you need to score around 2,300pts to do well in FPL. Now that includes around 250pts for captains so a raw score of 2,050pts.

You will have 4 players on the bench who won't score points. Assume around £19m of your budget is used on the bench. That leaves £81m for your 11 starters.

So that means you need your players to score 2,050 / 81 = 25pts per £1m.

    Price points are therefore

    £5.0m = 125pts a season = 3.3pts per game played for your team
    £7.5m = 188pts a season = 5.0 pts per game played for your team
    £10.0m = 250pts a season = 6.6pts per game played for your team
    £12.5m = 313pts a season = 8.2pts per game played for your team

That isn't really the point. If you have Salah for a run of say 10 games - will he score you the pts (around 85pts) in those 10 games to justify the outlay of £13m

Is there a country better at winding up opponents than England ?

    Australia could be close.

The it’s coming home memes have rattled seasoned veterans like Modric and losers like Corluka and Lovren.

It’s an advanced sense of humour and bond that is rarely seen elsewhere.

Like I said maybe Australia is close.
