Community Round-up: World Cup Fantasy and FPL divide attention

As was the case last week, the Fantasy Football Scout Community’s attention has been split roughly down the middle with Fantasy World Cup approaching its climax and the launch of Fantasy Premier League 2018/19 provoking debate.

Rainer and the exquisitely named Ohhh Shola Ameobi helped bridge the two games with a look at the Premier League teams most affected by the ongoing tournament and when the players involved in the 2014 World Cup returned to domestic action.

We’ve got a round-up of the week’s hot topics, and the usual array of Community tables and competitions, in our regular article below.

The Hottest Topics

This time last week, we were midway through the World Cup quarter-finals and Legomane asked whether sticking or twisting was the best option regarding Fantasy World Cup captaincy.

G-Whizz returned with his regular clean sheet odds hot topic ahead of the semi-finals, while rainy mused on the anticlimax that was the yellow card count.

Rainer, meanwhile, helpfully pointed out that Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea could be badly hit by their players returning late from international duty.

Before the semi-finals commenced, our Community discussed their transfers, captains and chips. With England and Belgium set to contest the third-place play-off later today, Siva Mohan looked at the rotation between the semi-finals and the fairly meaningless “bronze medal” match in the 2014 World Cup.

Legomane returned with a stick-or-twist semi-final special, as did G-Whizz with his last look at the clean sheet odds of this World Cup.

Ohhh Shola Ameobi examined the precedent of when the Premier League players involved in the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup returned to their respective clubs.

World Cup ongoing or not, there’s no escaping the buzz around the FFS Community regarding the FPL launch.

Maximus Bonimus Pointimus asked if other managers adopted a player-orientated or structure-based approach to their Gameweek 1 squads, while Giggs Boson looked at the merits of both goalkeeper rotation and one Charlie Daniels.

Holding Matip held court while discussing five at the back and value according to position, while HamezMace floated the idea of a very early wildcard.

Rich2086 and Prøfeßor Bear gave a rundown of the Wolves side and warned us not to write off their assets, before CloudSky looked at some of the eye-catching fixture runs in the first quarter of the season.

Eden Wizard, meanwhile, suggested that Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero could well play together at the start of the season.

Norman Conquest rounded up the latest additions to the FPL game and their respective prices.

Our “members only” hot topics concentrated on the Rate My Team launch and, using this tool, what the best team over the first six Gameweeks would be.

The Eliteserien summer break was also a source of discussion, with Dupuytrens looking ahead to the transfer window and European Under-19 Championship.

Community Tables

Our members have been hard at work this week, creating no fewer than 13 public stats tables. FPL Virgin, in particular, has been beavering away, creating nine of those tables including the best defence of last season and the talisman theory.

Wainright looked at defenders who made the most penalty box touches, while easilythebest listed the players who had the most “big chances” last season.

Hotdogs-for-tea, meanwhile, rounded up the defenders who created the most chances and were the most attacking in 2017/18.

Community Tournaments

Ahead of the third-place play-off and final, competition in the Fantasy Football Scout mini-league for the McDonald’s FIFA World Cup game is hotting up. The current top of the league reads as follows:

1. Sladuna (385 points)
2. Lincon316 (363 points)
3. Ludaslol (362 points)
4. SmokinBadger (361 points)
5=. Matt5138008 (358 points)
5=. McGettigan16 (358 points)

Our Mods and Cons league, meanwhile, shaped up like this:

1. ZidanRamos (336 points)
2. GSumner (323 points)
3. JohannesN (309 points)
4. Jackpenn (300 points)
5. Matzi11a (296 points)

The latest update for Frøgball, which uses combined Fantasy scores to represent different nations, is here.

If you are running a community tournament or are thinking about starting one, and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

3-4-3 with wc to shake-up mid/fw around gw 6-7 when all players have returened.

    Opinion would be appreciated:

    Fab, begovic;
    Sakho, coleman, diop, daniels, cedric;
    Mane, sane, ramsey, cairney, sigurdssson;
    Morata, Lacazette, Firminho.

    Thanks.

I don't think planning to WC early is a good strategy. History suggests that world cup players will miss the first game but usually back for the second and definitely back for the third. So I wouldn't worry too much about it and have to WC early. However I do like your team, especially midfield and attack.

"History" has changed it's date though. I've always 'planned' to WC as late as possible and end up doing it GW3-4 every time. This season the World Cup allows me to be more honest with myself. As I'm going to wild card around then anyway, might as well plan for it this time.

Tried including salah in early teams but I'm not comfortable with how much funds he takes from elsewhere. Kane will definitely be considered though and it's likely need 3 transfers to get him in.
Siggy is in as Everton have a very easy start to the season and is a possible differential as folk seem to be ignoring him.
Thanks for feedback though, appreciated 🙂

It's a nice, solid looking mid-price team but I don't see any consistent, reliable captaincy options in there.

Looking at starting with a 3-5-2 now, how is this looking?

    Ederson
    TAA - Bailly - Tomkins
    Salah - D.Silva - Mkhitaryan - Siggurdson - Cairney
    Aguero - Firmino

    4.0GK - Williams/4.5 Everton defender - Bednarek - Jiminez

    However will rotate around Cairney/Jiminez/Bednarek.

Solid team. Not a big fan of the TAA pick myself. He will for sure get lots of minutes but will also be rested in some games. Could be worth it if you have a good backup though.

    Got a dilemma.

15pts behind in one ML. Guy in front of me has no French defence.

4pts ahead in other ML. He has Mbappe, I have Griezmann.

Both MLs pay out roughly the same.

I have 4 France already. Get 2 defenders or get Mbappe?

I probably should just go defensive and get Mbappe.

    1. The_Adam
      • 9 Years

Can't you get a couple of French defenders + Mbappe? You can have 8 players from one country in this round.

My God, thanks so much for mentioning the 8 players thing.

Get French defence. It's unlikely for a world cup final to be very high scoring so Mbappe shouldn't (in theory!) hurt you too much. Plus Greizmann is the better pick over Mbappe anyway. Good luck and hope you win both!

Trying to plan for WC final round.

TAA has to be likely given how Trippier and Walker ended the semi? Likewise RLC and one of Vardy or Welbeck, having had the least game time up top with Kane and Sterling surely rested.

Obviously waiting for lineups but due to commitments I may be pushed for time around the deadline.

    1. Fantasy Gold
      • 9 Years
      5 years, 9 months ago

      Yeah same here.

I pray to God no Welbeck. If he starts then I’m lumping some cash on a Belgium win.

I reckon Vardy starts, he’ll be coming in for me as he’ll likely have pens if Kane is benched as expected.

Would they bench Kane who is chasing golden boot? If not injured, starting him would be a no brainier.

Either that or get Eric Dier to take out Lukaku in the first minute.

I'm considering Vardy too. Probably Lukaku to Mbappe if he's rested and Kane to Vardy.

Similar to mine so I like this very much, I have Azpi as I am a little concerned Alonso may not get that same role that has helped him score so heavily. Mkhitaryan I think will do amazing this season just the first game for me and Aubameyang is a great choice as I think he will play almost every game with out a rotation risk and obviously is always a goal threat! Salah and Sane well that speaks for its self both amazing pace and both top of their game.

I like the look of your team. Defense and mids are strong but i would be concerned about the front line. I would only go one of arnie/ touson and find a way to upgrade the other (or go 2 up front and shift more funds in the mid/defense).

A lot of Sanchez hype over at the Man United pre-season guide on reddit. I might actually get him over a Man City mid. Such an easy swap for KDB or Eriksen when they are back. Problem is Mahrez and Sane could be better picks the first few gameweeks in a way more attacking side.

    How’s this?

Gone for 4 City, 3 Liverpool, 2 Everton, 2 Bournemouth to capitalise on early fixtures.

    Ederson (4.0)

    Robertson, Coleman, Daniels, Cedric, Tomkins

Mane, Mahrez, D Silva, Walcott, Masuaku

    Aguero, Firmino, King

I will save a transfer gwk 1. Play 4 City at home to Huddersfield gwk 2 and then bring in Arsenal players and/or bandwagons going into gwk3, removing whichever City asset seems least worth keeping and anybody else who isn’t performing/playing.

Yeah, that’s why I’ve put fairly nailed on players around them and I have some decent 4.5 million defenders on the bench. So it would take a disaster not to field 11 men even without transfers. Usually I try and jump on bandwagons early, but you can pick the wrong one after just one game so I think it could actually be advantageous just to sit on the transfer and see how gwk 2 pans out.

No need for Bellerin from the beginning. Doubt you will want to play him first 2 games and too expensive to be benched. Why not trade him in after the Chelsea game?

I personally think they will be rested and slowly brought back in after the WC games dont you?

Dont get me wrong I think either will be great pics but after around GW 3 onwards!

            Same opinion here mate.

Toying with Jones (Utd) as I have 5.5mil to spend on a def or shall I just keep Daniels?

Think my def is lacking but could work for the first 2 - 3 GW's?

Tomkins, Cedric, Daniels, Ward, Peltier (fodder but starts)

Yer it's how the body works . I've heard this first hand from professional expert trainers (although not in football). You can train for 3 months and hit physical peak. 2 week off and you need another 2 or 3 month to get back that extra . This is why players take so long to hit form after injury.

Oops sorry I didn't answer your question

I've got same issue with Bailly/Jones ' it's either one of them ' Coleman or find the extra for otamendi. If I know Bailly or Jones starts then it will be one of them

I'm really not a Daniles fan. I think he's been hyped through Mark and co and people really think he's a good option but he fails year after year and he got dropped last season until injuries gave him a lifeline

I don’t fancy either tbh. They’ll miss first game because of the World Cup and then after that Trippier will be rotated at frustrating times and Maguire will conceed too often to make up for it with attacking returns.

I can't wait to see what Sarri does with Chelsea. He plays beautiful football.

When facing Sarri's Napoli, Guardiola expressed his admiration for him.

"Two teams with the same idea: high pressing, win the ball, short passes, dynamic in front. I am very pleased to face one of the coaches I admire the most."

It may take him a season to get settled, like it did Guardiola, but he is a magnificent capture for Chelsea. I'm jelous.

Plus he'll be an FPL dream. He hates rotation and likes to stick with the same Starting XI every game. With no CL distractions we can expect our Chelsea choices, once we know what they are, to be well nailed on.

          First draft...

          Ederson
          Coleman, Daniels, Robertson
          Mane, Salah, Miki, Siggy
          Tosun, Zaha, Aguero

          Subs - no good subs

Fixtures seem good for all...any good?

Emerson could be the best value defender this season if things go the way i think they will. One to watch

Thoughts on WC FFL final GW chaps?

Any five players key picks for the weekend? I appreciate it’s gonna be a random third place game but think more of the final... ?

Got Hernandez, Pavard, Friedman, Modric and Subasic for Sunday...that's it...
